I think Tim is an EPIC cyclist who because of his role never gets the recognition he deserves. Thanks both of you.

Thank you for the nice feedback Dylan. Tim made my job easy and I hope I can convince some other athletes to share their wisdom as he did.

One of my favorite pro bike riders and my favorite sports scientist doing an interview; what a treat for a Friday evening! This is the most interesting interview with a pro athlete I've come across in a long time. Thanks!

Wow, thanks! I am not used to being "on the other side of the microphone", but I think it is hugely instructive for both scientists and non-elite athletes to hear how professional/elite athletes make the training process work in the real world

Anton Palzer is a former world champion from skimo and like much of them did mountain running in the summer. He's 29 now and in his 2nd year as a pro with Bora. Would be interesting to hear his perspective on switching sports professionally so late into his career.

Good to hear that Tim should make a full recovery and that he'll be back pulling the peloton along soon. Was a shame to see Stannard and Kiryenka have to retire early with health issues, was hoping the same didn't happen to Tim....

Hey Stephen! Thanks for this great video, it was very informative and entertaining. It's great to get a few insights into the training schedule of a pro athlete.
I was wondering whether you could share more information about these 3-days-microcycles Tim was mentioning - they seem very appealing to me, because of the gained flexibility by not having a fixed weekly timeplan.
I would like to do something similiar with my trail running training, maybe not only consisting of repeated 3 day cycles but also thrown in some 4 or maybe in case of back-to-back long runs only 2 days.... Does anyone have experience with a similiar approach to training? My idea is to make every small block specific to some kind of stimulus, for example:
    --> A 3 or 4 day "easy" block consisting of 3/4 easy/medium runs in Z1
--> Another 3 day "intensity" block consisting of an intensity session, sandwiched between an easy day before and a cross-training session (e.g. cycling or Skimo) the day after
--> A 2 day "long run" block with 2 back-to-back long runs, maybe the second one a bit shorter than the first
I would love to hear your opinion on that!
Maybe someone else with a bit of training knowledge could say something to this as well?
The things I am still thinking about how to implement, are how and when to schedule each block in terms of frequency, etc. and how to make a broader spectrum of periodization with base, specificity and taper phases...
    Greetings from Austria! :)

My question is everybody talks about z2 and z4 but they skip z3 which is medium intensity especially if your in that zone over a hr

Recently discovered this channel. Excellent content. Had a question.
Train cycling, polarized training with 2 hard sessions per week and the others being long duration easy. Recently tried scheduling in a rest day on Tuesday followed by placing the two hard sessions on Wednesday and Thursday.
Would doing them on back to back days lessen the fitness building benefit they provide? Provided of course I can push just as hard as if I had them a couple days apart.
I didn't feel like I was handicapped on Thursday. The rest day on Tuesday felt enough to give me energy for both days being hard.

42:10 Some episode of the Scientific Triathlon podcast talked about research studying this and slow twitch fibers do seem to help with recovery. Both within session in also outside session. Fast twitch guys just can't train as much and as often of high intensity.
Thou at this stage of fiber type science it's hard to say what is type I fiber and which is type II anymore with all these pesky hybrid fibers and plasticity of fibers to training. Also classification of fiber type seems to be arbitrary at times.
