    Amazing - Watch it in high quality
    (I apologise for the blurry beginning. I tried with every single one of the codecs suggested by youtube, and this was the most decent)

    I don't get how this band isn't more popular. They're simply amazing.

    This is how to pull off "complicated" with real class - the spirit of the mighty Gentle Giant given a new lease of life. Perfect.

    This is from the first SB album I ever bought and it's the best song from it too. Sounds great live.

    Yes, but even more diffficult, those guys can play their instruments while they sing sincopatedly, Gentle Giant usually stopped playing when they sung

    Reading all these comments about being gods or not isn't I think the issue. I have loved bands like Yes, Rush, Asia,Pink Floyd and for many years Spocks Beard! Gods or not? Mmmmmmmm!
    I would allow for more gods then before!

    I do not doubt that you have written more complex things, but if you do not know how effective repetition can be, I doubt it is more interesting. Gibberish uses repetition as an effect - it sounds more like gibberish because the part is played over and over. Not their best song, mind.
    I also do not see how you can say worship stylings is not a genre... and then claim AOR is one. AOR is a format. And Spock's Beard is not blues by any means - rock: yes, prog: definitely, pop: quite, choral: yes.

  • @kingcrimson234
    @kingcrimson234 Před 13 lety +1

    @21stCenturyRushMan i wouldn't call nick a drum god exactly, but he's really really good for sure.

  • @teaflax
    @teaflax Před 14 lety +1

    Gentle Giant would never sing the same line with the same melody over and over and over. They were actually prog, where vocal melodies were just as important as the rest of the song.

  • @Necrovamp101
    @Necrovamp101 Před 12 lety +9

    Prog fans are some of the most closed minded fans ive come across. If you sound too much like the old bands you are copying them, if you try and make your own sound your 'not prog' and are actually some rubbish AOR band. (Assuming AOR is rubbish too)
    Do genres really matter? it's just music after all, and Spocks Beard happen to be brilliant music.

    • @fabiomichelini6286
      @fabiomichelini6286 Před 5 lety +2

      I'm huge fan of prog music and don't think like that. But there are some elements that really matters when you creating a harmony and melody and trying to fix the sound with your personal style. I think that is very normal to be influenced by old bands, but always adding your own expression. That's the key and I think that's the most difficult thing in music! I don't think genres matter but is normal to create some comparation level in all kinds of music. Spock's is amazing for itself but OF COURSE you can dig and find LOTS of inspiration and copied ideas! Gentle Giant, Wakeman, Jethro, ELP and many others. At least it's good inspiration. For me that's the case of Gretta Van Fleet. It's a young band that really sounds like Led but at least is a good inspiration and they are starting to add some own characteristics into their sound! But I can understand your complaining 'bout prog fans cause I know some VERY ANNOYING people that thinks they are SUPER EVOLVED because they like prog music and EVERYTHING is a reason to disagree. But trust me, it's just feel. The most of prog fans that I know are very open minded and capable to analyse and enjoy any kind of music!

    @teaflax If you don't call The Beatles pop at all I guess you would be right???

  • @teaflax
    @teaflax Před 14 lety +1

    @GentleGiantComp No, it isn't. Not even close. Knots has more than one melody line from the very beginning in the different parts, and about 15 seconds in, you have "You may know what I don't know", which is yet another one. On repetition, the last bit is also significantly changed.
    The canon section here is just the same thing over and over with some key changes that don't enliven it much. And the AOR bit in the middle sure doesn't help. This is Prog for people who like Journey and Foreigner.

  • @teaflax
    @teaflax Před 14 lety

    @metatonicmusic "Worship stylings" is not a genre of music. Also, SB has almost no Pop qualities whatsoever, seeing as they lean heavily towards the Rock/Blues idiom. They are, however, heavily AOR.
    Also, I actually I've written things more complex (and interesting) than this. I just did earlier this afternoon, in fact. Not that it matters, since "Why don't you do better yourself?" is a fool's argument.
