    I do think you guys are missing what a huge Beatles-fan MJ was, here? I'm sure MJ knew these lyrics way before recording it and the story goes like this: "I was coming home from church and my engineer was fooling around with that song, which I hadn't asked him to do, but when I heard it I said 'WOW! This is my favourite Beatles song.' So I just went in and in one take started singing it. We kept it kind of raw and funky. It was just spontaneous, but I knew I wanted to do something with it." Interview with MJ in Adrian Grant's Making HIStory.
    The line about shooting Coca-Cola still baffles me that BBC actually saw as an endorsement of the soda, when it's an obvious reference to doing cocain. And if anything, a jab at Coca-Cola who I'm guessing worked quite as hard in 1969 as today, to keep their brand far away from their origins..! Pepsi does not seem to have missed it though, since they didn't seem to mind it! Or maybe, as you say, MJ could do whatever the King wanted back then - being way bigger then Pepsi.
    To me, MJ's version, together with Ike and Tina Turner's version, are the blackest sounding one's, of the one's out there. I interpret that as a nod to Chuck Berry's You Can't Catch Me, which it basically is a slowed down rip-off of. I guess some would call it heavily inspired by Chuck Berry, but the case was settled out of court to Mo Levy's benifit, the owner of You Can't Catch Me. Levy in turn ripped off many of their signed acts, especially black artists, so the settlement did not benefit Chuck Berry in any way. MJ was very knowledgable about the genealogy of music and I'm sure they were aware. It could also be a reason for it ending up on HIStory, which had many contending songs for that spot and still MJ chose this one - with a definitely different sound - for that record. It was also a b-side to the single Remember the Time, which of course is also pushing black cultural esthetics and discourse. (MJ did not divide music in genres because of the conotation to race - was always bigger then genre, more than a race - but never forgot or stopped saluting their heritage. Musically or otherwise.)
    And I'd also say MJ's version, is by far the best version of the song.
    And the performance...I mean, yeah. MJ is smokin sexy as fuck. Sex on legs, as some say. Love it!
    Thanks for reacting! More MJ!! 🤩🙌😍

    I don't know if it's gibberish. I have always thought that the song was written in code language. And I'm quite sure MJ knew this song when it came out and was aware of the lyrics back then. He didn't do anything by accident. He knew the song and probably loved it like most of it did when it first came out.

      That's a fair point. To be clear, we love Michael Jackson on our channel. So we didn't mean to imply anything bad toward him with our guesses on the lyrics, etc.

    I enjoyed this. I lean towards John Lennon and Paul McCartney must have been on something strong when they wrote this. But they did a lot of music that had deeper meaning. And watching this video gives me the idea that Michael was plugged into their meaning. He did this song then ran into D.S. at the live Auckland concert. There maybe something in that arrangement.

    Hi guys. I just watched your reaction to Michael Jackson’s come together cover and I would like to know how is it? Lauren didn’t think that that was one of the most sexiest things he’s done.? I realize I’m a lot older than her. I’m the same age as Michael would’ve been but I found that to be very sexy. Also just FYI Michael did not do Paul McCartney wrong by buying the catalog you can blame Yoko for what happened. I am not absolutely sure, of course but I did read this year several books about his life so that’s what he said. OK have a great day.!

      Lauren has had those type of reactions to Michael in some videos. If I remmeber right, she thought he was very good looking in the Human Nature live reaction we did.
      And yes, Michael didn't do anything wrong to Paul McCartney. It's ridiculous that Paul claims otherwise.

    People acting like all he sang was pop music, that's so inaccurate, he sang pretty much every genre, they sang pop mostly in the Jackson 5, but in his solo career he barely sang any pop.

    • @InfectiousGroovePodcast
      @InfectiousGroovePodcast  Před 3 měsíci +1

      One of my favorites of his solo career is "Much Too Soon" which doesn't sound like pop music at all.

    • @roxanafleschin424
      @roxanafleschin424 Před 3 měsíci

      yeah that song was great, and now that he is gone it applies to him. I don't recall him really putting out any pop during his solo career, he did disco, funk, soul, rock, jack swing, r&b, even gospel. He was literally all over the genre spectrum.

      @roxanafleschin424 I agree that he put out tons of different types of music. Perosanlly, I don't have any problem with referring to a lot of it as pop music though. It's not a disparaging term, IMO.
