My jaw dropped when I watched the closing scene of the last episode. Everything that had happened over 4 years & 5 series, from 2 different television programmes, was leading up to those last few seconds. I couldn't quite get over how utterly final it was. The sadness & hopelessness, that they were all just dead & in their own personal purgatory & that nothing could be done for them or their families & that Sam had gone the same way, was quite palpable. It left an indelible impression on me. :(
To realise that it was a station for dead coppers was upsetting. To watch our favourite characters not know how or when they died was disturbing. They all had to walk into the light and leave Gene behind😢he is like the Archangel Michael, there to wait for passed coppers to guide them through purgatory until it's time to go into the Railway Pub.
@@lartensgrill6106 I think if you had watched all the episodes and didn't then you have no heart, I found it incredibly moving it really reminded me of the ending of Lost.
I don't see why they don't all stay in purgatory and pretend it's a normal life with the guv, because what I wanna know is are they still all together in heaven Chris and shaz for example and Ray and Chris because Alex will surely miss the guv and vice versa
best thing ever on British TV and the finale was so moving!!! . . .it will stay with me forever and will always be the benchmark by which I judge all new TV series!!! thankyou BBC!!!
I'd like to be in the 80s permanently with all the rock and pop stars of that decade. The fashion and music too. If I could live the 80s seen through the eyes of the child I was back then but as an adult then I know if be happy. Someone please invent a time machine so we can experience this before we get taken by the Archangel Gene Jeanie
Totally addicted. Philip Glenister is just so sexy in his acting. A very handsome man. Lovely eyes...gosh really lovely eyes...and pouty kissable lips. 😁
I’ve just binged it again. Check both shows out in their entirety on bbc iplayer. Keeley Hawes gets hotter & hotter with every scene. Those legs, omg, and her torso is devine. Cor.
Wow I never thought a I could love a TV series more then doctor who, and while I still prefer DW, Life on Mars and Ashes to Ashes comes at a close second. I don't think I have ever seen this good of an ending to any TV series.
Here we are in 2021 and I've just watched Life on Mars and Ashes to Ashes back to back. What brilliant TV it is. Especially the ending which is one of the saddest endings I have ever seen, and gets to me every time I see it. The music and the acting are excellent. I didn't want it to end
It made me sad that Sam Tyler chose to return as it felt more 'real' than reality, yet Alex was destined to never see Molly again. Was it a deliberate treatise on the inherent unfairness of fate?
Sam came out of his coma but found he couldn't live in the real world any longer so he jumped off the top of the police station, committing suicide. His 'leap of faith' took him back to 1973 but after 8 years, he KNEW he couldn't stay. He didn't return to the real world though. As he knew the secret, he faked his own death and took Annie with him into the Railway Arms (which was the place they went to carry onto heaven).
Well no, Sam must have died already for him to be in the 1973 world to begin with. The return to 2006 must have been a dream in itself - he was already dead
michaelleacy the return to real world was real because at the start of ashes to ashes Alex knows all about gene and the imaginary world in his head and the only way that is possible is if Sam actually woke up and wrote reports on what happened
E 30 so how do you explain when Sam wakes up and he is in that meeting and he cuts his finger on a knife or a pen without realising he says he “can’t feel it” I always took that to mean he wasn’t really back in modern day, or he was going mad. Therefore Alex must have been experiencing the same thing?
@ben happe Same as you, I thought he didn’t go back, but Ashes explained that Sam did in fact go back, so that must be true. (Spoilers for both shows btw...) However I now interpret it like this: Sam has already “died” once, and so going into limbo in Gene Hunt’s world was the next step and then eventually heaven. He doesn’t wanna go back to standard 2007 life, as he’s already had the joy of Gene Hunt’s World. Sam died in frustration of Maya being taken, meaning he had to come to grips with himself in the 70s. Once he was back, Sam had nothing left in 2007, but had a duty to fulfil in 1973 and also had Annie, so went back to live a better life.
Just finished re-watching Season 3 of Ashes to Ashes on iPlayer over the last couple of days - they're all on there, and Life on Mars - didn't realise, been catching up with them all recently on Yesterday (for the first time since they were originally on, 2007-2010 - although I do have all the DvDs, somewhere...) - this final season (of all of it) much much darker and so very very deep - and mind-blowingly wonderful!! Quite possibly the two most brilliant series ever. And I absolutely adore Gene Hunt! *Fire Up The Quattro*!! I know the best shows always like to go out at the top, but I personally think they cut it short; there was endless mileage for at least one further season/another moment in time......
Yeh I've been watching it too on Saturday nights on Drama and continued to watch on iPlayer. It's so addictive. Can't get enough of Philip Glenister,he has the most amazing eyes and pouty lips. I'm infatuated ❤️my Gene Jeanie crush. Oh how I'd love to be Bolly keks in the final scene saying goodbye guv😘😘😘😘
This series is the absolute pinnacle of a TV show. Every episode absolutely fantastic. Never ever has any series been so well written, all falling into place during the totally unexpected final episode. This final episode is so moving it hurts. All the characters were absolutely perfect for the roles they carried out.
Once you know that the police officers are actually in purgatory you can never watch an episode of ashes to ashes or life on mars the same way again. None of the people they meet are actually real. It's similar to some one waking up and finding out that the whole thing is a dream
Yeh it's mind-blowing to think of all the "tarts and scumbags" they nick are dead too! The crimes they solve and tie up,the whole of the people are dead😮like Skip on the desk, good ol' Viv. Although you never know this when you first start watching it as it was on TV back in 2008/9/10. Gosh! Is it really 10 years since it finished 😭😭😭
@@sytran666 Because if you saw it on the BBC, you know it's brainwashing depressing crap produced to make people feel miserable and also all lies. They serve their father you know. Also, purgatory is totally fictional too, invented by a Pope, again, to mislead.
That last scene walking to the pub is the TV series version of that iconic Resovoir Dogs poster film scene. This TV series spoke to your heart as much as music can in my humble opinion. TVTASTIC!
I don't understand the last episode in the series. Are all the characters in this series dead except for Alex? If so, is this place a world between life and death? If this is a world between life and death, I would rather be there than die completely, and I don't want to remember my death, but just lead a life.
Sam and alex knew they weren't supposed to be there and they were from different years, but why didn't chris or ray or shaz remember getting killed and travelling to gene hunts world ? Never understood that
Joe Hill They’d been there for much longer. Both Sam and Alex begin to forget things the longer they stay in Limbo. Alex had been there two years and nearly forgot her daughter. If Ray/Chris/Shaz had been there for 9-10 years, they’d have completely forgotten their past.
Could be that, also could be the fact Sam and Alex were in a coma and fighting to get back..i think Gene, Ray, Chris and Shaz all died at the scene in their real world and weren't at that stage of in a Coma so i think they just lost memory of the entire of there previous lifes. I think when they see the videos and when Gene sees his ID in the grave that all the memories of the previous life come back and they now know they are dead and they accept this hence why they are able to go to heaven.
i hear you in 2017 , BBC pulled plug or didn't even try to keep it going , the writers and the cast would have been up for it, as long as we have reality shows and cooking shows and flog it on bbc they happy
Chickenbeef Man you are absolutely right. A third and final series is in the works. Not ashes to ashes, my bad! But you never know....maybe there will be overlaps?
UNBELIEVABLE now FIRE UP THE QUATRO ,I feel another season coming back ,but unfortunately it will be FIRE UP THE Prius lol transformer hunt it will never work just like the names BOND JANE BOND lol good luck we that x
series 3 was completley ridiculous and repeate some plots from previous seasons... and the end was.. yeah... it was an end. an end with no sense at all. i hope they won't bring another Show/series... it would ruin anythin more
Let's be honest, the last episode was awful. The writer ran out of ideas. Worse ending even than The Prisoner in the 60's. Ambiguity's great if it's done intelligently. It was like a 10 year old wrote it. Very disappointing..
The shot of Gene standing alone outside the pub after letting everyone go gets me every time.

Except Nelson took them to Saloon Bar

The best last episode to a series ever.. I thought the last episode of series 1 was good, but this was a knockout. Fantastic
Breaking bad is but it’s up there
"I'm the one that was in the SAS, you're the one with the girls hair..now get yer knickers on, we're leaving".... priceless.
I hope when my time comes I can go back in time and live wild and kick ass

An amazing piece of TV. Likewise comments below, I cannot stop watching Life on Mars/Ashes to Ashes. Brilliant, Brilliant, Brilliant.

@Aspie Mt69 of course!!!! Never occurred to me

ThatBowiefan same
Same omg
Exactly the same
Watch the very last episode of Lost.
I finished watching Ashes to Ashes last night and as a Doctor Who fan I thought the exact same thing.

The best series in the UK Created. Breaking Bad in the US 1st and Life On Mars/Ashes To Ashes 2nd.

So Winston was St Peter and the pub was the pearly gates.
I’m late to this series but a great ending to tie everything up.
Who'd had thought gene was an angel.
Best ending to a series EVER!!
Pity they never showed chris and shaz getting married at the end I would have liked to see that
No point gettin married when youre dead
It's called, "Get me Home" by Edmund butt :)
Ashes to ashes is by far the best out of the 2, love it. ❤❤❤❤
No it‘s not lmao
Its my opinion, you have yours, I have mine.
Both are part of the same story
I just finished the series!
Nelson, yay!
how much do you pay for service in Britain? i live in America and the series finale was on last week.
Yeah, although the name is Nelson :)
WHAT WAS THAT? Brilliant.
Can someone PLEASE tell me what song is playing, it hits so hard at 1:35
Beautiful what was the track? xx

Is this where all old coppers go
So how did Annie get there??
Also was everyone else in this world dead from another time
I think they will be bringin gthis back when they write a good enough storyline for the 90's version.
bam bam lol mate it’s 2020
No a 90's version would be crap
Gene was the ferryman,
But we don:t die though.
Sam and alex knew they weren't supposed to be there and they were from different years, but why didn't chris or ray or shaz remember getting killed and travelling to gene hunts world ? Never understood that

Ray, Chris, Shaz all died straight away. Alex & Sam were still fighting for their life’s in coma so they had a connection to the real world.
What's the song at the end where everyone is at the pub and Ray reconfirms Gene as the Gov? The music is not in this video but the scene is.
Life on Mars, the recurring song throughout both shows?
Heroes david Bowie or Ashes to ashes david bowie
the bullet killed them just like the car killed sam
Sam was in a coma. He woke up but jumped from the top of the police station afterwards.
Also, Alex woke up but later died from complications arising from the bullet wound.
Whhops! My bad. lol
I bought my TV LICENCE so why doesent the BBC put this on again. why am i paying for a licence to watch the crap they put on now !!!!!!!!!!!!!!
i hear you in 2017 , BBC pulled plug or didn't even try to keep it going , the writers and the cast would have been up for it, as long as we have reality shows and cooking shows and flog it on bbc they happy
iPlayer- all of it every episode of both series 👍
there won't be ever an 4th series
GLBizzie why don’t you google that question right now? You may be surprised......
James Chapman bruh that was 6 years ago lol
I know!!!! :D
James Chapman isn’t it a third series of life on Mars, rather than a fourth series of ashes?
Chickenbeef Man you are absolutely right. A third and final series is in the works. Not ashes to ashes, my bad! But you never know....maybe there will be overlaps?

sirpizo555 Did you write it?....
I'd love to! You didn't write it did you Snoopy? That last episode really was a stinker..
I agree this ending was pretentious as fuck.
Cool. Respect. You're obviously easily pleased...
