At that time, Ma Long used Boll ALC. This blade is too responsive, making ML's serve and touch play have lower quality.

He needed that responsiveness to make up for his lack of power.See how he played against Boll at the WTTC his hand almost fell off from overswinging.If he played with Ma Lin's blade his backhand and mid-distance game would have been even more atrocious.
Ma Lin could afford using a slow blade because his close to the table footwork was so much smoother that he rarelly had to play from mid distance plus he could get more spin on the ball.
