RUNWAY 29 OPERATIONS AT NEWARK!
Back in April 2014, one of the main runways at Newark (22R/4L) was closed for construction, so the main landing runway was to be used for the departures, leaving runway 11/29, the crosswind runway, as the arrival runway - many large jets such as the Boeing 747, Airbus A340, Airbus A330 and more had to land on runway 29 - which is only 6800 feet / 2000m long!

Due to noise restrictions, there are airports around the country which have longer runways, yet the landing threshold is relatively far from the end point of those runways....meaning that a 11,000 foot runway is reduced to 2/3 or less of that distance.

Runway 27 here at Boston is 7001 feet, and 747s and 777s land on there all the time.
Yes, EWR's 29 is 6726 feet long. Quite a challenge still, probably autobrake 3!
Yeah, one time I was planespotting, and a LH 744 landed of 27, and it slowed down with using only like 1/2 of the runway. Maybe even less.
Newark 29 is a good bit more challenging than Boston 27. On EWR 29 you can't come straight in, you have to circle to land. On BOS 27 you come straight in, ILS if you like. On EWR 29 you must also be mindful of numerous obstructions, especially all the cranes at Port Newark.

Cool how do 777 A330 747 land on 2000m runway. Seems really short for those large wide bodies!
+Groyd If a wide-body like the 747, A330/340, or the 777 is using that runway to land, it is because there is a strong westerly headwind somewhere between 270 and 300 degrees. The headwind will slow down the plane very much on a 6,800-foot runway. Normally, 4R/22L is used for landings and 4L/22R for takeoffs.

I fly out of this airport fairly frequently. That short runway is 11-29. Very seldom used as nearly all inbound and outbound traffic (even the small commuter aircraft like United Express, American Eagle, etc.) use the parallel Runways 4L-22R or 4R-22L which are 11,000 feet and 10,000 feet respectively.
Yes - during the time of this video, 4L/22R was closed for construction so Newark was landing aircraft on 11/29 that summer.

Alicia Kasper Tilting up or raising the nose reduces the descent rate so that you don't hit the ground hard.
An airliner on approach to land is flying at 2.5 miles per minute, descending at a rate of 700 feet per minute.
Raising the nose increases the wing's "angle of attack", which makes it create more lift, reducing the descent rate.
This is also why an airplane takes off when they raise the nose - it increases the angle of attack of the wing so that it makes more lift.
StratMatt777 Ah okay, thank you. I had always wondered that. I noticed it when I did my first spotting just a couple days ago at Newark Liberty Airport. I want to do it again maybe at JFK. Do you have a favorite airport you've spotted at?
Alicia Kasper I used to go to Seattle International Airport years ago before they removed the spotting park when they put the third runway in. I do all my spotting now from Cessna 172s and Diamond DA40 and DA42s out of Boeing Field as a flight instructor. ;) (I've got a couple videos on here)

I just had that landing in a 747-400. Winds were howling out of the west. Quite a downshift on touchdown! I uploaded it on CZcams.

In 2006 a 757 mistakenly Landed on the Taxiway that runs parralel to runway 29

I just looked at a DCA Airport diagram, and it lists 1-19 as 6,869 feet long.

Nice video, but to be honest, a 6800ft runway is nothing to be worried about, plenty of space to stop with minimal extra effort
+james goez (LearjetGuy) In this case, the only reason for using this runway (Runway 29) is if winds are so strong that the crosswind limits for Runway 22L are too strong, or if there is too much backlog for Runway 22L.

Inspired by this video, I took my Canon SX-60 HS (65x optical zoom) to the same garage roof-top you apparently went to when you filmed the above video. I was able to film for about 30 minutes before the Port Authority Police (politely) asked me to leave...citing "security."
