Man all those artists/musicians from the Woodstock culture/time, they develop such an approach to life - a light that kept with them, it's crazy. Nobody nowadays to THIS extent live, approach or think like them or a really small percentage & that's a f*cking shame
As opposed to other types of music, in Puerto Rican Bomba -type of folkloric dance rooted in Africa- the drummer follows the dancer. Through some particular steps or movements that the dancer makes, the drummer needs to be really alert in order to hit at a particular time, dictated by the dancer when the drummer least expects it. So basically it's a call and response in which the dancer tells the drummer what to do. It’s somewhat difficult for me, with no formal musical training to explain in words so I’d suggest those interested to search on YT “Bomba dancing/dancers” from Puerto Rico. Just pay attention to what the dancer does with her/his body and listen to what the drummer answers at particular instances. Love Santana since I was a 12 yr old growing up in Puerto Rico back in 1970 and every time I listen to anything he says I learn something new.
