Kanchipuram Athi Varadar Raising history

The city of Kanchipuram is seeped in traditions and spirituality. Kanchi Varadaraja Perumal Temple is iconic, and the original idol of this temple - Athi Varadar, emerged from the auspicious flames when Lord Brahma did Ashwamedayagam. Brahma did poojas and punaskarams for the idol, and this moorthy was the main deity in the Garbagraha until early 16th century. One day, he appeared in the dreams of a devotee and expressed his wish to be immersed in the Pushkaranai pond inside the temple premises, and that he can be brought out to bestow blessings every 40 years. The idol is kept immersed till this date, and raised every 40 years to give devotees the opportunity to see the vigraham worshipped by great saints erstwhile. Athi Varadar was last raised in 1979, and is going to be raised on 1st July 2019. The spiritual idol will be kept in the Vasantha Mandapam within the temple premises, till August 17, 2019.
