- I wanted to give everyone a good video on how I build my cattle panel trellises using 2 8ft panels as opposed to the single 16ft panel. I also wanted to give you the visual of what they look like loaded in the back of my SUV. Are 2 8ft panels better to use? I introduce one of my thoughts as to why I think so.

For the 16' I put an aluminum extension ladder on my minivan luggage rack and then load them on top. Works great. The ladder supports them so they don't flop around.

I was thinking the same thing! I tried to pick some up today, but the folks at the store wouldn't load them on my van. Jerks... I'm going to take someone with me next time.

Bring a bolt cutter with you and you can cut 16 ft panels down before you load them. Also, if you often find yourself needing more hauling capacity, consider buying a light utility trailer. It's nearly as useful as a pickup, way cheaper and you can pull them with almost anything.
In 2019 I bought 16 ft. Cattle Panels from Lowes for $17....Now post-pandemic they're double the price, at $34 ea.

What I did was buy the 16 foot panels from Lowes. They are the Tarter brand, about $27 each. They can do truck delivery for $65. To justify the delivery cost, I made sure I ordered all the lumber and all oversized items that would not fit into a car. I waited a year until I slowly put my list together from 10 foot conduit tubes to heavy sand bags for starting my hardwood cuttings. I was in no rush and the cost of delivery was worth it.

They are selling the 16 footers for $67 each at our local Bomgaars. Our HD doesn't carry them. Highway robbery!
$87 per 16' at my local hardware store. Last time I bought them they were around $40 ea. Ouch.
Uhaul rents trucks for just $20 a day.
The very reason I dont have cattle panel in my garden right this second is because I dont have a truck and you just solved that problem:) My poor hubby....lol

My SUV has light weight roof racks. I get 2 12’ 2x4’s and tie them & the Cattle panels to the roof racks leaving 2’ overhang on each end
The only reason I don't have cattle panel trellises in my yard is because they don't seem to be available where I live. Not a single hardware store carries them and I can't find any suppliers online.

I have been using cattle panel trellises for 5 years. I love them. I even have a cattle panel greenhouse.
Awesome! We have a cattle panel greenhouse also, except I had my brother help me get the 16 foot panels for that project, easier to lay plastic on a smooth panel
How did you build your greenhouse? I feel like the $30 delivery fee from my favorite farm & garden store is reasonable if I buy lots at once (like 8 16 foot cattle panels at once-and this time, my next door neighbor and I are sharing that cost).

I did mine off the Texas Prepper design. I made the ends a solid wall because I plan on added shelves to the inside and making the wall a chalkboard so I can keep notes from the garden. @@debraschwicht9741 I encourage you to ask a neighbor or friend to use their trailer if you know someone who has one. I have a nice trailer 6x10 or 12 and I loan it to everyone ! I think other people use it more than I do 😊 I don’t mind at all !!!
We've been using ranch panels we've been using those forever in our garden and around our ranch....and finally people are listening and using them. Of course that's making the price go up but it is what it is and hopefully you guys will farm and feed your families which is very important!

Just bought two 16’ers, bought beefy bolt cutters at Harbor Freight & cut the panels in half, loaded them in my suv/truck. Saved about $45 minus the bolt cutters. Thanks for the video!

Plus the high tunnel idea is amazing. Not to mention attaching them with the barbed hooks!. I got a lot out of this video thank you. I’ll be doing it your way this year.
I am a sixty seven year old woman with a walker. I used the 16 x 4 panel, laid it on the ground, put bamboo poles on all four ends..with about 18 inches hanging below the fence. You have to think about it. Realize you are going to flip one side over to make a half, so the legs have to go out on both short sides. I Tie wrapped the bamboo poles all over to the poles, lifted the one set of legs to match the others. Tied them together to I could stand them up. Caution!!!! When you get them in place you need at least two, but should have four people. When you untie the rope, the fence will spring open. I like his 8 x 4 because the arches are tall enough I have to get a ladder to pick cherry tomatoes!

This is really helpful , to see how you get them home. It solves a huge problem for me! After watching this I think I can get two into the trunk of my Hyundai Sonata with the seats folded down. I’m glad you used my idea to unhook them and make low tunnels 😁😁😁😁 I am going to make my high arches slightly different and am going to make some videos soon on how this middle aged handicapped lady will do it on her own 👍

I like the versatility idea, particularly with regards to the low tunnel option. It'd be nice to mod with a modest framework + hinges. Cheap carabiners might be a viable option for connection points...and more durable than plastic in all seasons.

I haven't been able to do a big garden this year and now I'm happy because this is the best idea I have seen with these panels. I saw your other video but taking them apart and making them into little green houses or tunnels is just genius!
Our garden isn't that big but the vertical space these give you makes it easier to grow a lot more

Great idea! I really like the low tunnel idea. I have an odyssey and brought home 2 16' panels on top on the rack. They hung off the back but I just took it slow and put a flag on it.

That was nice to watch how to handle 8 ft panels!!! We have a bunch of them and want to do that. Idk if the 2 of us are strong like you though as were older now! You made it look easy. It was so nice to see examples of how to handle them! I also thought of just tipping them toward each other in a point and tie them up.

Very helpful! As a single senior I found cattle panels to be so useful to extend what I can produce in my backyard garden. I want to put up more trellises this year and did not know about 8 ft panels. I use rebar pieces to hold panels against my wooden garden beds. Again easy for me to use and I can move them if necessary.
I'll let you know if you haven't read some other comments but the prices are different nowadays for them, the 16' panels are a lot cheaper and if you take bolt cutters you can cut a 16' in hapf and save some money

Someone suggested you could also get a 16 foot panel and use bolt cutters to cut it in half

2-8 foot panels makes a lot of sense versus a 16 footer because it will support a lot more fruit when they’re overlapped on the top! Thanks for sharing this I was just about to pick up some 16 foot panels today!
Clever! Easier for transporting was reason enough but I love the idea of being able to convert the arch into two little greenhouses. Very cool.
It's nice to try and get the most use out of them as you can.
@@Citystead Great idea for us folks with smaller cars and no trucks or trailers. One could widen out the base to make it a bit shorter, yet cover more space! Great idea!

Great info video! We use the 16 foot and fold them in half, strap them on top of my Jeep! We have an archway up our ramp for the passion fruit vines to grow on and give us shade against the house!

Don't know if anyone mentioned it yet but if you turn the 16' panels on their edge and bow them in, (Bowed middle up against the back of your bed and the open ends towards the tailgate) they will fit inside a standard bed truck with the tailgate closed (Just). Just put a strap on them from corner to corner.
Great point about fitting the eight footers. Cool duel use as far as low tunnel or high.

Great video!! We were going to use the 16 ft but when I went to see them in person and also having an 'urban' garden/space - time for Plan B. And the 8ft panels are going to have to work. Seeing how you work with them 'year round'' makes more sense especially for the 'urban gardener'. Maximizing space is a huge factor.

Wonderful! I was thinking of using my panels for a “greenhouse” effect over my beds.
We have a cattle panel greenhouse also and it works great, get warm enough for seed starting in the early spring and we over wintered some greens in it this past winter
I think I like the 8 foot version too. Cool that they are over your walkway. I'm a big fan of the U nails.

Thanks for your video, this helped me decide my approach on doing cattle panels. I am in Marietta, Georgia... I want to plant Melons this year, and I am off to Tractor Supply this weekend. I have a truck and trailer, so will probably use that.

Might be easier to lay panels flat and attach the top together then use your ratchet straps to bend the panels to desired width and put in place to attach at the bottom. 👍 Thanks for the SUV tip. I'm going to try it 😊
I just toted 16 ft panel in my SUV about a mile from Tractor Supply to home... sometimes even if there's a will you really shouldn't make a way. I did not put a single scratch on my Dash😃 but I cracked the windshield and tore the fabric on the the frame around the window😖 on a more exciting note, I finally have a cattle panel arch in my backyard like I've wanted🤣
First off... LOVE your shirt =) Second.. Thank you for this video. You've solved quite a few issues for me. I wanted a trellis to go over the walkways between my raised beds but I also wanted to make a sort of hoop house run for my chickens that would be on one raised bed I wouldn't use (alternately each year) but couldn't figure out how to have both the trellis and the hoop run. With your idea of using 8ft panels that will give me the flexibility to have the trellis and also rotate which will be the hoop run. The added bonus of having greenhouses for colder weather for growing is great too! Thanks again!

This should work out really well as it will give me some time to clear out a couple of my veg beds and make ready for some interesting vining plants next season

This makes way more sense to me to do it this way. I was watching MIgardeners video where he put a 16 foot panel across the top of his sedan and drove it home with his hazard lights on and I was like there’s no way I’m doing that plus tractor supply is like 20 minutes away from my house.
Exactly my problem, exactly the same distance to TS, and watched MIGardeners vid too! The 8ft x2 is the perfect solution

Cattle panels are not only “especially good for the North.” I’m in SW Oklahoma where the sun and 100 degree temperatures are relentless in the summer, so these are good for supporting shade cloth. Since we also have destructive hail and wind storms, I prefer the strong cattle panels, which can be anchored securely, to help support the cloth or plastic to protect plants from total destruction. Smaller, wimpier wire structures blow over, get shape shifted, etc.

Video is so good Josh! I definitely agree that if it panels are the way to go and that it’s a ways they’re way more versatile. Plus, usually they’re easier to transport. Eggs are looking really good over there!

I plan on erecting my first cattle panel for my upcoming spring garden.
I am going to sink wooden fence posts for support instead of using
T-posts.
The fence posts are easier to remove if necessary & I can also add hardware to the wooden posts for hanging tools/ hoses and growing potted plants.

Brilliant! I have a pick up truck but I’m thinking that these 8 foot panels are more versatile as you showed changing from a tunnel to a trellis. I’m 60-year-old female and the 8 foot panels would be a lot easier for me to handle. Thanks much!
One of the biggest pluses to me is just being able to handle them a little easier and safely
I am about your age too and husband doesnt help with anything so I fins the 8' panels easier for myself to bring home and install. I have just put up 2 straight across. Once I get more raised garden beds I will be doing this.
Spray the ends with some plastic dip to prevent cuts and scrapes on yourself as well as your vehicle as long as you don't go over oard will still be easily placed into the ground if needed.

i fit 3x 16ft panels in my 5' bed no problem. the folks at tractor supply helped me bend them into a U shape with the open end facing the tailgate, the bend towards the cab

Thank you for the idea of using the 8 ft panels. I was struggling with thought of having to transport the 16ft. I have a Durango and this could possibly work for me.
You could also buy a 16ft panel and use bolt cutters to cut it in half. They are a little cheaper, I just have limited time and getting two 8ft panels was just quicker amd easier

Very clever! I subscribed. :) I think Deer Stakes would be a great way to anchor your cattle panels. That's what I want to do to build my cattle panel greenhouse this year. So I don't have to buy wood, and make a frame at the bottom.
