So hopefully this will explain why I will never be going to a dog park again.
because in today's video it is a story time about an incident that took place over the last few months. Although I'm fortunate that Tory is okay, I think this was a great learning experience to share with dog owners, especially new ones. I know that not every visit to a dog park will result in an altercation, but I do believe that dog parks have very high chances of resulting in an injury for your dog and or contracting a disease or infection.

I believe the dog does have a record now. The other dog that it attacked, owners went through a court battle with them and they barely got off with custody of their dog still, so they're on thin ice. It was a hard decision for me to have to be the final straw that gets their dog taken away. I just pray their personal trainer can really make a difference and they do a better job as owners.

Hey Cody, I am just watching this a year later. So sorry for Tory and the encounter with the dog park and the attack. I am the owner of a black Shiba and he was attacked 9 weeks ago while we were on a walk in our apartment community and a neighbor’s off leash Australian Shepard mix ran through the parking lot in an ambush. The attacking dog got my Shiba by the neck and lifted him up and tried to death shake him. He then tried to drag my dog away continuing to shake him by the neck. I held on to my dog’s harness to add weight so the Sheppard could not drag my dog away. My 11 year old Shiba was screaming. The owner caught up and couldn’t get her dog to let go. I pepper geled the dog in the eyes and hit it on the head to get it to let go. It took minutes before we could get them separated. The trauma and damage was significant. The owner cooperated and said she would pay for everything. After spending 5 hours at the emergency vet and seeing the damage, I filed a police report for the attack and bite the next morning. I respect how others want to deal with attacks, and I also don’t want anyone else to have to go through this. I chose the court route to emphasize the seriousness to this owner of keeping a dangerous dog, allowing it off leash, and having no control over it. Every time we see this same dog, it looks at my dog like it can’t wait to attack again. Thank you so much for sharing your story!

Yoshi cried and screamed and I took him in my arms to comfort him. Then we were both attacked by a big dog there. Yoshi jumped out of my arm and the dog continued to attack me. @@cody.taurus I know this is old, but I had a small Italian greyhound. We went to puppy class at the local humane society. All dogs there have to be temperament tested before going to the dog park. We had good experiences. Another thing I did was to put him in a reputable doggy day camp, that put similar size dogs together, and they temperament tested. Not all places do that, so I would suggest finding places that do that.

I own a male Shiba. He's about 40 lbs and built kinda stocky athletic.
Even in my own neighborhood we have to be careful. Too many irresponsible dog owners. Multiple times dogs from 6 houses down off leash will come towards us while the owner is yelling at their dogs to come back. It's like people intentionally try to be stereotypes.
My shiba does not like strange dogs approaching, EVER. His immediate reaction is to fight due to how often people's off leash dogs come charging at us from across the street. Had to start bluff charging them while waving my walking stick to make them back off.
Often see these dogs go into other people's yards and poop in them too. 🙄

So glad you and Tory are ok from that attack! I have two shibas that are still quite young as well (6 months & 1 y ear 11 months), and unfortunately this is exactly the reason why I don't go to dog parks.
A neighbor that lives up the same street we live on, has a bigger and older dog who is extremely friendly towards humans, but is aggressive towards other dogs. Whenever any other dog passes by, the owner always has to stop walking or whatever she's doing, and hold her dog back with both hands. There were several times where that dog and owner has walked passed and has stopped and told other people with their dogs out to hold onto their dogs or tell them to make their dogs go inside (so her dog can walk past without being aggressive).
Whenever I've walking my dogs past that dog, I always just try to speed-walk past them. However, after watching your video and warning, it has me on high alert. I can't imagine what I'd do if that dog, or any other dog, attacks my shibas - I'm not above hurting another animal if they're hurting mine.

Took my dog to the dog park a few times. He was a big boy and was very sweet . He got "bullied" by this one dog to which he usually just ignores. This time though, a button was pushed and I watched my dog grab this dog by the neck scruff and LITERALLY TOSS IT IN A PERFECT END ON END CARTWHEEL THROUGH THE AIR. The frightened older owner scooped up his screaming dog and then I got to watch my dog football tackle him and the dog-only to fling it again.

I understand what it’s like, and it’s very scary! My Shiba Cosmo has been attacked or almost been attacked many times. For example at a dog park once there was a Jack Russell and Cosmo was only young and wanted to play and then the dog snapped and bit him on the neck, he was bleeding and screaming because of that, and another time was when I was casually walking him at the park and a man had his dog off the leash and the dog was freely walking around and was not too close to the owner, the owner has earphones in and then as soon as the dog saw Cosmo it ran up to him and knowing that it wouldn’t end well I tried to walk away from it before it sees him, which was too late and Then it growled and then Cosmo did too, and then it started attacking Cosmo and I was so scared my heart was pounding and I tried pulling the dog away from Cosmo desperately and the owner 2 minutes later suddenly realized and ran over to grab his dog. I was still trying so hard to pull the dog away but I couldn’t that well and Cosmo was screaming and trying defend him self, i even tried to pick him up but the dog wouldn’t stop. Then when the owner came, he came just before the dog ripped cosmo’s ear. After the man grabbed his dog he smacked and hit his dog telling the dog off. The guy said “sorry my dog is usually friendly” and then he quickly ran off leaving my dog and I scared. Cosmo and I were really fortunate that the dog didn’t do too much harm and left to go home with a few scratches and teeth marks on his neck and on my arm. I can’t believe that people let their dogs do that and then violently tell them off thinking that it would help the dog and stop it from being agressive, and dogs like that shouldn’t even be out in public especially off leash! It’s so scary and terrible!
Btw sorry it’s so long 😂
also I am glad your cute Shiba has recovered after a scary attack, hopefully that dog won’t ever attack anyone ever again

This is such a helpful video! I too had a dog attacked by a neighbor that wasn’t taking their dog’s aggression seriously. My daughter was 12 and walking our dog and the other owner blamed her despite having been told to not allow his dog around ours. Of course I went mama bear over my babies and told him he should be ashamed of himself for blaming a child! My dog would have died had the bite been 2 inches further down her body because it would have punctured her lung.😭😭😭 I also didn’t call the police because they took it very seriously after that and I was afraid they would put the dog down. Flash forward 12 years - I now have a Shiba and another neighbor with a dog that shows aggression towards Sasha Fierce. He doesn’t speak English well but I keep telling him not to allow his dog near her because I have seen what happens. He’s a very nice man but I don’t think he fully understands what I am saying and this is his first dog so he isn’t aware. So, this video is helpful to people because we have to follow our gut and when it seems off be cautious and say no.
PS I found you because I am a first time Shiba mom and they are a unique breed so I wanted to learn all I can. Now I’m obsessed with Tory! I did not see the pitbull boxer that was behind the display and he lunged out to my dog and grabbed him by the neck And I’m screaming and trying to pull my dog and everyone in the store was trying to get the dog to open its mouth by hitting him. The owner was hitting his dog in the face and my trainer came running and put her finger in the dogs butt to get the pitbull to let go. once the dog let go he went straight for the owners hand was hitting him in the face. I was holding my dog for deal life. I didn’t see bleeding until we went to the vet, it was just a small gash thank goodness but now my dog is afraid of big dogs. I’m terrified by them too. We will go to the dog park only if it’s empty, I’ll be OK with the small dog or two but once I start seeing big dogs come by even if it’s going to be on the other side of the fence we leave. I feel like we have only gotten away with so many because their related to one another. I'm so glad your shib is ok, great choice about not returning! Dog attacks can always happen, sadly. Just random without a visible trigger. I have a pug and she's really friendly and always wants to greet every dog and is very submissive and stuff and we met this big fluffy chowchow mix that "gets along with females just fine" ... didn't take more than two sniffs and he tried to attack my little pug girl who was thankfully parked between my legs so when i heard the first growling sounds I clamped my legs together in reaction xD and when I looked down there was the other dogs head between my legs. Just be prepared at all times. It happened behind my back and I was talking to a friend. I'm glad my dog felt something was off and went to seek shelter underneath me because if that happened a few meters off it could've ended badly. But it taught me that I am fully prepared to actually body another dog when they attack mine. I don't care about being bitten and I certainly would show no mercy for any dog attacking mine. I got a heavy leash with a heavy metal clasp at the end and I always keep it at hand to use it as a weapon to fend off another dog as well as kick them full force. There is no "picking up my dog" or "pulling her away" .. there's only standing my ground and fending that dog off to give my own dog the knowledge that if anything is off.. I am the safest spot and she will stick close to me. Everything else will just mark her as prey. ... funny enough the Chowchow and her are totally fine with each other now. Met a few times since on and off leash and they were both super relaxed. I'm still wary and will always be though.

All of a sudden 2 siberian huskies cane at us and immediately went after the biggest male. Shibas don't back down so he met them head on. Thankfully the shibas owner was super quick to scoop his dog up. The husky owners half assed tried to pull their dogs away. One of them grabbed the shibas hinds but didn't do any damage. Dog parks are dangerous. Not just because of different dogs and dog breeds, but because some owners shouldn't have dogs which can get a lot of injured dogs and even people.

I’m so sorry about Tory. Personally, we don’t take Luna to a dog park for the reasons you mentioned. (Diseases, other dog aggression.) when the weather is cooler, we’ll take her to a regular city park that we know doesn’t have dogs. If we feel Luna needs to be dog socialized, we’ll take her to PetCo or PetSmart. Lola did have an incident, once. It was when she was going to her puppy training class. We were in the 3rd class, Luna had her first cycle, (she worse one of those female panties) and there was a male puppy who decided he wanted to investigate Luna. Luna was having none of this. She turned around snapped at him and then sat down immediately. (Yes, both were on leash) Ever since then, Luna has no desire to associate with other dogs. In fact, when she see another dog, she’ll turn her nose up, and keep walking. In Luna’s mind, they don’t exist. 🤣. Glad to see Tory is healing nicely. ✌🏻🦊🥩

So although I have had many dogs in my life and never went...I do have a new Shiba myself 😍 he is the cutest and best and I thought how fun let's look up the closest dog park and go. After watching this I think I will retract that thought. Better safe than sorry...so I'm glad I watched this as a reminder. I'd rather find a puppy play at a local pet store or with trainers or friends to have him play with other pupps.

I have two chihuahuas and avoid dog parks too. The small dog sections are usually empty and even if they aren’t, mine are consistently the smallest and most vulnerable there. The large section is too rambunctious and too many owners swear their dogs are friendly but seem oblivious to the signs of dog aggression they display as their check their phones or socialize. Not worth the risk.

You have a big heart man. I would honestly still report only because the attack happened 3x. Why didn't they take precautions after the first time? I know some owners will put a muzzle just to keep the dog from biting another dog, pet, human. It is considered fine and more safe than not. I wouldn't report them in hopes of something bigger. It would just be helpful to have some kind of record if the dog hurts another person or animal. I believe you that the owner seems nice but being nice doesn't make them a good dog owner. Ya know? Socializing can be done in a controlled environment, such as a doggy day camp, where dogs are grouped based on size.

I think dog parks are ok for older dogs that are already socialized and proven friendly. But my shiba does not do well at dog parks, other dogs cowed him a bit when they came rushing over, barking. When he feels insecure he won't back down but immediately goes into Jaws mode. I've seen him clear out a huge dog park in seconds. I had better luck socializing him by taking him to art street fairs and places with crowds where we kept on walking, through distractions and past other dogs and kids. I sat with him at a dog friendly outdoor cafe (alone) and ordered food, he chilled out and enjoyed the bowl of clean water they brought him. I'm sure they get much better tips when they're so nice to the cute dog! He never plays, neither with toys nor with other dogs. But since I adopted him as an older dog, it is what it is, I accept it and we walk by ourselves, which is his happy time. It's the best time for me, too! I am glad if your dog is not having lasting damage from those nasty experiences, that other dog is a lawsuit waiting to happen. PS, if I were you I would not train Cody to 'speak' for a treat, my dog has the most piercing bark and when he wants something he WANTS IT NOW. Unfortunately many times he thinks barking will get him what he wants, don't know how that happened... tried to train him the 'down' command, that worked out a little better.

My dog made friends with a group of dogs, everything was good. This husky in particular was very cool with him, and then they went under a picnic table and the husky attacked mine. I quickly separated them. The husky tore my dogs face up but was okay. But I think what hurt the most was that the other owner put no effort into separating them. Like wth

Dog parcs are only safe if there is a dog trainer present to intervene directly if something happens, and if the dog owner keep a close eye on their dogs . Finally, a responsible dog parc will only get dogs of same size together. If it is an opened place, with no trainer amd any size dog there, don’t go. If your shiba gets attack by another dog, he will remember only that other dogs are agressieve. Of all things, this can impede his socialisation…. And have the exact opposite effect of what you are trying to achieve by exposing him to other dogs in the first place! This is specially true for shiba.

I had a Shiba mix and whenever we would go for walks, if someone with a dog wanted to bring their dog to meet my dog, I would try to discourage it, since my dog was highly aggressive towards other dogs. Most people would still try to bring their dog over and I would have a hard time holding my dog back from attacking their dog. Sometimes the other dog's person still wouldn't get it. I hope people will be smart about keeping their dogs apart from other dogs until there are clear signs the dogs are BOTH friendly. We did, however, meet some people in that same park who encouraged us to walk with them and my dog was fine when we were all walking. It was like we were a pack and this is what you do when you're a dog in a pack.

There are soooo many irresponsible dog owners. My French bulldog is now reactive to strange dogs running up on him. I was walking him before and when I rounded a corner some people in the neighborhood had their dog just loose in the front yard. As soon as it saw my frenchie made a beeline straight towards him and starting attacking him. When I scooped him up I got bit. The owner's were like "we're sorry, he's protective of our daughter ". First off, the dog should not have been off leash. It was a nightmare trying to walk him in my old neighborhood in Round Rock. So many loose dogs. A lot of smaller dogs like chihuahuas trying to run up on him barking. I had to worry about him hurting a dog smaller than him because he is not okay with dogs he doesn't know charging at him. He's once he gets familiar with dogs in a controlled setting. Strange dogs running up on him is a no.

Tragically that dog has killer instincts. I know a similar situation where such a dog knocked down an elderly woman and a judge ordered it to be put down. I blame these people more than the dog. Some shelter dogs are on long paths to recovery and socialisation. Had I been you or anyone in this scenario I would have informed the police. This dog was on the 4th attack you know of and not to sound too paranoid but that dog had attacked others, irresponsible owners are slow to change and that owners sounded like they did not care the physical and emotional trauma that their dog inflicted on others.

NOPE! NO. absolutely not, no. as a disability advocate for over 25yrs, that dog was not in training to be a service dog. that type of behavior immediately disqualifies a dog to be a service animal + often even a documented emotional support animal. period
could they have been self-training (disabled ppl training their own service animals as opposed to getting one from an organization that breeds, trains, + provides service dogs)? sure. and as valid as self-training is, continuing to train, for service-work, a dog that has harmed _multiple_ beings _after_ training has commenced, is wildly unethical.
not all dogs can be working dogs. i’m not a gambling person but i’d bet my Nintendo Switch on that dog not being a legit service dog. shame on that owner + any owner who has _ever_ abused + exploited those laws. even once. b|c each + every time someone does, it has a direct or indirect impact on those who actually need these legal protections to safely live an independent life.
if you don’t believe me or think this is hyperbole, i encourage you to follow one of the many content creators//advocates whose life of independence, heavily relies on their service animal. Molly Burke, Matthew and Paul, Jake The Service Dog, + many more.

Some dogs are just not meant to be with any other animal. Mother had shepherd like that. When Gerry got loose the uncles would grab baseball bats and take off. Bats were not for other dogs but for Gerry. Finally they had to tie as well as pen him for the sake of every animal in the neighborhood. If he hadn't been extremely affectionate and gentle towards all humans he would have been put down. Priblem is some owners are like some parents who just can't admit they have a problem child.

Getting a Shiba to dog parks is a good thing, best way to activate them which takes away some of their goofiness and stubbornness, letting bad experiences ruin it, will only make the Shiba more incapable with other dogs. Shiba's is really good at understanding dog body language, and much worse at understanding human language, so they thrive better with dogs than humans, but some dogs can have a hard time with the Shiba due to it's wierd tail, which can lead to some bad experiences which can make the Shiba bad with other dogs depending on how you tackle it.
I really think you should have reported that dog, mostly because he absolutely knew he had a dog with aggresiveness towards other dogs, yet he don't grab the leash properly in order to not drop it when there's other dogs around, such person should not have a dog.

I'm sorry that this happened to Tory. I know the feeling of seeing your dog being attacked by another dog, it's really sad and heartbreaking. My Shiba inu had an accident about a month ago, we brought him to the dog park to socialize with another dog, and we take him to the dog park where they separate dogs by size. We were at the small size dog and it was our 3rd time there and my Shiba inu was having so much fun playing with other dogs until two women came with like 7 Australian shepherds medium size. In the beginning they were doing good until one of them bit my Shiba inu :(. Me and my boyfriend always keep our eyes on our Shiba inu whenever we are at the dog park and he is off-leash, we drank our water real quick, and then we saw our Shiba screaming while running and being chased by all of the Australian Shepherd. I got panicked because he was bleeding so we took him to the animal emergency hospital right away. I didn't get a chance to talk to the owner because I was so worried about my Shiba Inu. He had to wear the cone for 2 weeks, and I felt really bad because he wasn't comfortable with his cone. We tried taking him for a walk a week after he got his cone removed, and every time a dog approaches him and sniffs him, he would step back, which makes me really sad because he's probably traumatized from what happened month ago. I'm glad Tory is feeling better now. Sending positive vibes to both of you! from Abel (name of my Shiba inu).
