Hi there, I think that you can probably make it work. I would look at getting a dog walker for in the middle of the day, especially until you know what the dog/puppy can handle. I would look into how to tire a dog out mentally and physically, there are many games and training that can be done inside. The dog trainers at McCann Dogs could really help, they have a CZcams channel and a full online training program on their website, www.mccanndogs.com/ with many additional resources. I have taken their workshops and they are so helpful and amazing.
German Shepherds are wonderful dogs, my family rescued one and she was just fabulous. Having a puppy could be tricky in your circumstance, and since you like show dog lines, one thing that you can do is go to gooddog.com and find a breeder that may have a retirement dog. You will have the assurance of knowing that dog's history, temperament, health, and what they have been trained to know.
Hope this helps!
