  • This gameplay tutorial for Mechwarrior Online shows you how to utilize your Mech to it's best extent. I'll give you a rundown of the build and what it is made for and show you the actual combat role in two games on the battlefield.
    Mechwarrior Online is a competitive first person shooter where you build and pilot massive Mechs and prove yourself on the battlefield. The game is based on the Battletech franchise, which originally was a science fiction tabletop game in the 80s. Big part of the game is configuring your loadout and find the best match of missile, ballistic and energy weapons for your playstyle. The weapon variety ranges from devastating autocannons over particle projectors to deadly arrays of laser beams. On the battlefield your team of 12 Mechwarriors fight the enemies on rather small arena-type maps. Teamwork is crucial here because a single Mech does not survive long if it steps in front a full firing line. Communication and teamwork is key on your journey to glory and victory.

    Wow up 8-2 and it's a loss. Did not see the one coming. Great game to illustrate the mech and gameplay.

    One of my favorite builds. I had almost no issues with side torso destruction so I run it with XL, and I added a couple ERMLs for a little extra damage since the heat capacity to do it is there. Hmm, I wonder if a Light PPC might be better for the future and could probably make it fit; better range and hence better damage for hitting those long range targets.

      I can confirm you can fit the LPPC with the XL engine. Works a treat. You lose ammo relative to this build, but you get the higher instant damage, make better use of your otherwise unused sinks, you remove ECM, you still have *something* if your gun arm goes, and you don't have ammo in your CT breadbasket to go crit to some rando machine guns from behind :D

    I use the same mech as my current main. except I use two LB-2x and a snub ppc. the fire rate means I essentially have a RAC without heat. If you set to chain fire and tap your fire button the ROF is absurd

    • @ThorsDecree
      @ThorsDecree Před 21 dnem +1

      For real. They had zero coordination. Enemy team was working pretty well together, though.
      Infantry... _shudders_ ... Infantry is underutilized in MechWarrior games. There's been Battle Armor ever since MW2, but it's not the same.
      Skilled infantry can canonically wreck a 'mech, especially if they have the right gear and good tactics. There's a cool scene in the book _Decision at Thunder Rift_ where the protagonist (Gray Death Carlisle, founder of the Gray Death Legion) fights a MechWarrior and her Flea (or was it a Raven?) by coordinating hovercraft and infantry to get the 'mech running hot and then has a standoff in the street aiming a basically-napalm launcher at the cockpit. There's all kinds of fun infantry toys in the BattleTech universe. This is one of the few MW games where buildings are indestructible... imagine if they were filled with infantry :p
      MechWarrior: Living Legends is a total conversion mod of Crysis Wars that has battle armor, hovercraft, tanks, VTOLs, and aerospace fighters in addition to 'mechs. Nothing quite as pesky as a skilled player in battle armor with a man-portable PPC. There's not a lot of players, but it's hella fun to zoom around as BA and just be annoying. If you wanna see what infantry does to 'mechs, there's some cool gameplay on YT of some dudes being general menaces in BA fighting 'mechs. My favorite thing to do other than BA + ManpacPPC is to spawn a VTOL with a light Gauss and thermal imager and snipe 'mechs from 1.5km up. The SRM brawlers and LRM-lords alike start dancing, at least until the measly 36 Gauss slugs the VTOL can carry are spent.
      Mechs without anything else just feels empty to me. It's missing the humanity, I guess.

      @@ThorsDecreeHe fights a wasp and kills the pilot, then goes on to fight a Stinger that he forces to run away and ask help from a locust, the locust is successful in covering the stinger but it gets captures when it overheats and is forces by Carlyle to surrender when he aims a handheld inferno launcher. If you ask me it's plot armor. The entirety of GDL trilogy is plot armor winning and Gray just riding the wave. They are good books, but they are not great representation of the mech-vehicle-infantry power level in proportion to eachother.

    • @ThorsDecree
      @ThorsDecree Před 20 dny +1

      @@HalIOfFamer Locust, that's what it was! Thanks for the synopsis, your memory is far better than mine. I could've sworn they were up against a whole lance, my jumbled recollection makes sense to me now. It's been a while since I read it, idk why I didn't expect an even bigger nerd to come along :p
      "Inferno," that's the word that's been on the tip of my tongue all day! You alleviated actual anxiety there, thanks lol.
      I agree there's a lot of plot armor in that trilogy, I like to think of it as luck to keep the immersion. At the risk of mixing realism with science fiction, even the writings in-game in the MW2 library refer to protracted battles where heat builds up gradually over time, sometimes hours, where the victor cools off by plunging their 'mech into rivers or under waterfalls. I always figured for gameplay purposes the heat scale in Battletech is a lot lower than it would be realistically, and most of the books seem to take that approach. Just treating it as a blackbody curve (and if you use the core temp in K shown on the old games and engine weight as a reference) the thermodynamics doesn't make sense at all. Those heat sinks, even the IS singles, just wouldn't be able to physically dump that much heat that fast . Exothermic chemical weapons applied directly to a cockpit would probably be terrifying in a 'mech already failing to keep the cockpit a livable temperature. Solids are about 1000x as dense as the air the heat sinks rely on. Unless the 'mech is able to somehow instantaneously heat the surrounding air to a plasma, the math just doesn't math, which is why I give inferno rockets a pass.
      Inferno weapons exist in Battletech games but are generally pretty meh stats-wise. But against an already hot locust... Idk, I could maybe see it working. The cooling systems aren't exactly meant to mainly wick heat from the cockpit but rather the engine and the weapons systems. A heat spike on the head only has to be hot enough long enough to cook the pilot even if the 'mech is physically fine.
      All that aside, Gray should've taken about 50 bullets and 100 lasers in that book, not to mention be trampled and cooked. But then the historians wouldn't have written about his exploits.
      GDL is my favorite faction in MW4:Mercs. Something about those 80s underdog hero tropes....

      @@ThorsDecree Also, infernos on their own are very weak, but their purpouse is different than what it is in books. If you run a any mech that requires 2 tons of srm ammo that you can activate late in the firing initiative, you can wait for a flanked enemy to fire, if he fires all weapons and rides the heat(lets say a marauder walked and fired both ppc+ac5) you put 2 salvos of inferno and if you hit he is at least 10 heat, meanig he is slow as hell and +1 to hit mods. if you hit more missiles you might force a shutdown or an explosion of ac5 ammo.
      and if he realizes what you are planning and only fires 1 ppc, you fire regular missiles and get the damage in while he wasted 6 tons of heat sinks and 3 harmless heat gauge doing only 10 dmg this turn. That is the power of inferno.

    How do the buffs stack in MWO? If you have, say, 4 buffs of -10 percent on cooldown, does that equal a full 40% reduction? Or is it calculated in 10 percent increments like this? 100% minus 10% = 90% minus 10% = 81% minus 10% = 73% minus 10% = 66% total reduction?
