The Worst Tractor I've Ever Seen

  • I got a call from a good friend of mine this morning. His son is moving to a nice place in the country near here and will need some equipment to maintain it. Dad was on Craigslist shopping and trying to help him. He found a bargain on a tractor and wanted to know my opinion. I let the air out of the ballon really quickly.
    What he was looking at was basically a three-wheeler that had been modified with a PTO and a three point. Three-wheelers were a bad idea in the first place because they tended to roll over. Couple them with some weight on the back and, especially in the Ozarks where I live, you have a recipe for disaster. If you were headed down a hill with a weigh behind you and you tried to turn, you could end up in a deadly roll.
    I also don't know how the machine picked up anything. The motor was in the back, and the rider sat right over the top of it, so, if you did pick up something on the back there'd be a good chance the front wheel would be off the ground, which would make steering a little difficult at best. It was the worst idea for a tractor I've ever seen. I'm pretty sure the company that made it (or at least sold it) is out of business. I would hope the engineer that designed it has been excommunicated from whatever engineering association he was accredited with, if there is such a thing.
    Having made light of the product, the situation is one that is really common. A lot of people really want to move out to the country and invest most of their money in the house and property and don't realize they'll need equipment to maintain it. When they do, and the shopping process starts, there's a lot of sticker shock because of how expensive tractors and implements are. The tendency is to look for bargains and the last thing you want is to latch on to a three-wheeled tractor that puts you in great danger.
    There may be other options that work. Sometimes the long zero percent programs can help get you into a new tractor, but, be careful taking on too much debt, especially with a young family. I can tell you, those kids cost more the older they get. Another option might be to look for a lesser-known brand of tractor, if you can still find parts for them and know someone who can service them, you may have to go with an older gas tractor, some of them are bargains. Just make sure you have a mechanic look it over before you buy, some of those old tractors can be hard to get parts for. The last option, and this may be the only one, is to hire any needed grooming done and save your money. Just remember, it takes money to live that special rural lifestyle that you want and cutting corners on equipment may put you in worse shape than you started. You need to pass on the Craigslist three-wheeler tractor!

    This 3WD machine is purpose built for raking sand traps and baseball fields - its not really a tractor per se. I used one for four years on a golf course and it was pretty good in the traps

      @bobjones1131 Před 7 lety +2

      Yep, if you need to rake out sand traps within a tight turning radius or run an aerator on a golf course without leaving tire ruts, this is the device.
      As a "tractor", (utility or otherwise) this wouldn't be the one to get.

    Very good information as always but I have a different opinion on older gas engine tractors. The implication of a gas tractor to “get you by until,you can afford a newer (Diesel)” is an injustice to some of the 50’s, 60’s and even later gas tractors that kept our rural farms producing then, and in many cases are still, running perfectly even now. Many had the Continental 4 cylinder engine, producing 30 to 50 hp depending on the version, and they started in the coldest weather and ran forever if well cared for. I can vouch for this - I own a 1961 Massey Ferguson 50 - and it still runs great and works perfectly. Just for fun this past winter I went out on a -35F morning to see if it would start. It fired and ran in no more than two seconds of rolling the starter. Try that with even some of the new diesels and see what happens. Don’t get me wrong - I own a new compact diesel tractor as well, but that Continental gas Massey will likely still be running long after I’m not!

    I bought a 1958 IH 350 Utility with 1640 hrs., on it for $2000.00, with working end loader, new set of tire chains, and manual blade. Still love to hear that purr of the engine. I have to repair/replace the front driven hyd. pump for the end loader, (bolt on aftermarket) that took a dump.
    While my Uncle had all IH, he only had one the had the TA on it like this one does. I use it more for starting plowing snow, then take off the TA for the speed.
    While the old Girl say for a good while, (you should have seen the rust in the gas tank), it runs perfect.
    Bargains are out there if you are in no hurry. (Edit) It has a wide front end too. Better suited for what I do with it.
    Smiles!

    I suppose I should not laugh it this but really someone built this. As you know Mike my first Tractor was a 1967 JD 2020. To your point there are some older gas tractors that are a good deal if you watch they may need a little cleaning up but they work. I still use mine event though I jumped into a bigger tractor later that little tractor can be really useful.

It had a grass cutting deck that mounted on the front and a collector/sweeper that mounted on the rear. Had an amazing turning circle and never ever gave me any cause for concern. Like almost anything,there is a product design limit and as long as you don't exceed that then it's all good. Operate outside those limits and you will soon find out why they were set in the first place!

    Mike, I can remember the old Honda trikes that look similar to that and they were bloody dangerous. If you go around a tight corner there was a good chance it would lift one wheel and in a worse case it would roll over. If your friend can get away without a loader then i would go for a grey fergie or a MF35.
    Mike if you get time can you please do a video on the tractor top link where it attaches to the tractor, I have noticed a few tractors with 3 holes in which to place the top link. Can you do a video on which is the best hole to place the top link in for a specific task and why. Thanks Allen

      Yeah, I'm sort or embarrassed about it because here in southern Missouri, where I live, we haven't had much measurable snow in recent memory. Here's the best I can give you: czcams.com/video/tAI6-7QoQxM/video.html. I've had some folks in the north comment something like "You call that a snow?" and I get that. There are lot's of areas where you'd probably want a front blade for your loader bucket or a snow blower. Where I am, at least until weather patterns change, that rear blade is more than enough.

  • @ih1206
    @ih1206 Před 7 lety

    Hey Mike, I used to work at a golf course when I was in high school and they had a rig just like this. That appears to be the power unit to a sand trap rake. I don't know about that pto unit, but the one I ran had that "3 pt" hitch that raise and lower the rear mounted rake. They had modified it to have a mid mounted cultivator on it to bust up really packed sand, kinda like farmers did in the old days with corn cultivators. It was made by Jacobsen I believe, all wheel drive, hydrostatic transmission, with a Briggs engine to drive the hydraulic pump. It worked great for what it was built for. We always "swirled" the sand when we raked, literally driving in circles, overlapping as we worked from one end to the other. You could pretty much turn on a dime, and was pretty stable on slopes, for a three wheeled machine. Again, it was purpose built.
    Also, growing up farming and still farming and spinning wrenches, I see no real reason to avoid gas tractors. Yeah diesels have more power and are better in fuel, but if you know what you're doing, a gas tractor will serve you just as well as a new compact diesel tractor. You'll probably end up with a better built tractor just because they were built heavier back in the day when gas engines were still popular in small tractors. These new tractors are great for homeowners, but are far from being a tried and true farm work horse.

    As to 0% financing, we did a 5 year 0% deal on a John Deere 3032e and made a brand new tractor affordable for us. The dealer included a front end loader, 5 foot rear cutter, and 18' trailer for just over $20K with monthly payments about 330. I never thought I could own a new John Deere for that price. I'll second your suggestion.

  • @Karl427
    @Karl427 Před 7 lety +2

  • @tcmits3699
    @tcmits3699 Před rokem

    I drive a gasoline truck and gas and Diesel tractors, for the average home owner gas power is good, propane would be a better fuel ie forklifts and small engine floor buffers. These new brands should be getting off diesel power. I would love to be able to shop for a tractor with spark-ignition, considering the cost of diesel fuel. As far as the three wheeler it could be very practical for the right person. I wouldn't recommend putting a 3pt conversion kit on it, but drag-behind implements it might be ideal especially if the price is low enough. Maybe we'll start seeing some modern non - diesel compact tractors in the future.

  • @williamdavidson9009
    @williamdavidson9009 Před 7 lety

    I agree that this unit is not suited for much other than golf course work. Although you don't favor gas tractors, there are many like the Ford N series that are reasonably priced, very reliable, easy to work on and capable of doing lots of work. If he is looking for a machine similar size to the 3 wheeler, a large garden tractor might do the job.

    hello, I just came across your channel, looks pretty neat. I am one of those home owners that you were talking about. we just got our place and don't have a lot of reserve funds. what are your thoughts on a 4x4 atv Vs a small tractor. I need to cut tall grass 2 acres maybe once or twice a year, cut and drag dead trees and snow plow. I was thinking of getting a pull behind mower and rototiller with pony motors on them. is this asking to much of a atv? they are quite a bit cheaper than a tractor. your opinion would be appreciated. thanks

    • @TractorMike
      @TractorMike  Před 7 lety

      Jerry, honestly, I've never tried using an ATV in that way, so I'm by no means an expert. Personal opinion is that it is going to be asking a lot of an ATV, and that eventually you'll want to move up to a tractor. I'm not usually a fan of a sub compact, because they're too small for a lot of people, but for the small area you're looking at and what you're wanting to do, a sub compact might be the perfect tool. It;'s going to be more $ than an ATV, but watch Craigslist and your local dealer's lot and you might find a low-houred small tractor at a bargain. You might also consider rental. Rental rates look high, but compared to year-round payments they're really not. Also, sometimes there are people around who own tractors that you can hire to do that stuff about as cheap as a rental. The people who owned our place before us hired someone to brush hog it and that was much cheaper than owning a tractor. Good luck!

    One alternative for someone on a budget is a gray Japanese tractor. Many models have good parts availability and sell for low prices. I purchased a Yanmar 1500D with a Koyker loader for $4,000. That model doesn't have a water pump and needed a radiator so I added one and a new radiator for less than $1,000. It has only 15 pto horsepower but with 4wd it gets a lot of work done. And, realistically, what are you going to buy for $5,000 with a loader? jmho/ymmv

    You're too right Tractor Mike, this thing looks "cute" to people from a city and it probably is fun to mess around with it but it's dangerous. I grew up in western Nebraska, two kids I went to school with were killed on tractors with narrow front ends, one was in a flat farm yard. We were kids then, he was a kid and goofing around in top gear and it went over. The other guy was a friend, this happened years later, he was a town guy and was generally unfamiliar with working with heavy machinery or any farm machinery. He was driving a tractor at a honey bee operation out of state and got one real wheel off into a ditch, not even a deep ditch. Rollovers are nothing to trifle with. What a waste of these guys. Best thing about this 3 wheeler is that it has some nice parts. The frame needs a cutting torch, "the blue wrench". Maybe a true friend of his will cut the thing up one day. I'm 64 now but these are things you never forget.

      Jeff, that's a tough one. Joysticks can be mounted to the tractor or the loader. If it's a tractor mounted joystick, it's probably built into the fender and would be difficult to relocate. If it's a loader mounted joystick, it might be possible to move it to the other side fairly easily with longer hoses. It's going to take some blacksmith work. I'd also consider finding a low-houred tractor with no loader and putting an aftermarket loader on (Bush Hog, Westendorf, Koyker, etc.) and mounting the joystick on the left side versus having to remove one and relocate it. You might give a call to Westendorf at (877) 969-1190 and see if they have any ideas since loaders are their specialty. If I come up with any other ideas I'll let you know. Good luck!

      Plenty of older tractors around in the 40 - 80 hp range. They will not be too flash or sophisticated, but in reality that is to their advantage. They tend to be simple and heavy duty built, ideal for jobs where you just need it to work when you jump on. I am thinking of John Deere, Ford, Massey Ferguson or my own International McCormack, which incidentally must not be confused with modern McCormacks as they have nothing in common except name. These older tractors are fixable by your local mechanic, if not yourself, whereas anything new will be needing servicing by the dealer. Avoid anything with modern electronics on board as they are at least 50% responsible for downtime.

    I wouldn't necessarily call that a tractor. We have one on the golf course that we use for taking and repairing bunkers. They are also used on baseball fields for making the dirt look all pretty. These are NOT intended for anything more. these things are sketchy being on three wheels and all.

  • @eiserntorsphantomoftheoper2154

    Dude, you seem like a knowledgeable fellow and a likeable guy, but how do you not see this is a FACTORY built specialty vehicle for golf courses and ball parks? You undoubtedly saw the hydrostatic pumps. They have spin on filters. That means commercial grade. This is not a "FARM" tractor, and to proclaim it as the "Worst" tractor is ridiculous. That's like saying a canoe is the worst boat because it can't pull a skier. . Its not even really a "tractor" in the common sense of the word, so much as its more akin to a "tug" as used at airports for pulling cargo trailers. This vehicle is only designed for level terrain. The implements it pulls have their own castors , so they are not lifted off the ground, but actuated up on their chassis, such as reel mowers , dethatchers, fertilizer spreaders, vacuums, rollers, etc. So there is no weight transfer to the rear. This is a well thought out , nicely engineered piece of equipment, if used as intended. I think this whole video was spun to get views. Good luck to you. Now I'm going to fire up my David Bradley. There is a Giant Sequoia in Oregon that needs moved.

      He was clearly giving advice to a guy that was going to use it as a "tractor". Look up "tractor" on your local Craigslist,etc. and you will find "garden tractors", "lawn tractors", "walk behind tractors",etc. all listed. Even a Gravely walk behind tractor can be legitimately called a "tractor", regardless of the fact that it is 95% of the time, just another fancy lawn mower that "could" be used differently.

    • @eiserntorsphantomoftheoper2154
      @eiserntorsphantomoftheoper2154 Před 7 lety +1

      Bob Jones I watched the video, ergo I realize he was helping a person to purchase a tractor. This does not in any way change the fact that he obviously knew this was a specialty vehicle rather than a universal vehicle. He seized upon a chance to characterise something as the "worst" without any acknowledgement to its intended purpose which insults every engineer who ever designed any speciality product. "Hey look at that Gleaner, that's the worst "tractor" Allis Chalmers ever made. What were they thinking? Hell, the lugged tires and hydraulics are in the front! You'd have to drive it backward to do any plowing".
      The title and content of this video was designed to purposely mislead in an attempt to get viewers. Its a Bullshit, Douchebag move. It's a shame. The guy probably has some good videos.

    no it's not a bad idea, it's golf course equipment not a tractor. golf courses all over the U.S. use similar equipment. I was a manager for a sod farm for 8yrs in the south and these were necessary to work around tee boxes, bunkers, etc.

  • @42lookc

    This isn't a "tractor". It's a sand trap maintainer for golf courses. To compare it to farm or utility tractors isn't even comparing apples to oranges. Also, any machine is only as dangerous as the operator. We used lots of narrow front Farmall H's and M's on sidehills here in Eastern Ontario, with really no more rollover accidents than any other tractors.

    I can't believe they had the nerve to call this thing a tractor. It isn't even a half decent lawnmower. On a farm or even an acreage, a tractor is NOT a luxury. It is essential, especially if you get any amount of snow in the winter. Borrow money or sell your car but you need at least a 25 hp tractor just to get work done around the property and keep the roads in decent shape. That three wheeled monstrosity should be pushed off a cliff.

    Just get an old Ford 8n and 4 ft implements if under 10 acres, or a 1960's model Ford diesel if larger acreage that can handle 5 and 6 ft implements. Can find the first one under $3,000 and the 2nd for less than $6,000. Good ways to go on a budget and Ford parts are everywhere, but do some research first on what to stay away from.

    brother I have to say I have priced tractors and I have a small tractor I mean a very small tractor. It is a wheel horse about the size of a riding mower. we only have 4.5 acres but this little tractor I think is pretty sweet for tilling and plowing. it don't have a front end loader on it or anything like that. But you can buy a subcompact wheel horse c145 for about 500 and anther 200 for the tiller and anther 150 for a plow. I think these tractors still have a place. I can even order plans to build a front end loader if I wanted to and build it for about 1200. But it is not going to pick up a 600 pound round bail. not having a extra bill to pay is nice and my little tractor cuts way down on labor that was the reason for buying it. it is small so storage is not really that big of a issue either. it just has a single cylinder 14hp kohler engine on it so it get great gas mileage also. if the engine blows up and is junk I can buy a brand new one for about 600. can't bet that with a stick. it is small tho and can't do what the bigger tractors can do. But for the price and simplicity of it. (I got mine for 300) I got my money's worth almost in just tilling the garden and a good tiller these days new cost around 1200 dollars new. Just an idea for the penny pitchers out their.
