    Just bought the same set up. But mine is a 2016 5.3 with 3.42 gears. Coming from the diesel world for so many years I was worried about pulling a 27 ft but this video put my mind at ease. The last time I had a gas truck I was 20 and that thing could barely pull my boat hahaha man the new gas motors have come a long way

      dcjlove you'll be fine. I do however recommend the Equalizer Weight Distribution hitch with 4 point sway control. It's by far the best I have used. These trucks are meant to tow. Just remember to slow down and keep it around 55 to 60 mph. You're on vacation after all. Relax and take in the scenery. Don't get nervous about people behind you. They can go around you if they like. Make sure you load your travel trailer properly with about 10 to 15 % tongue weight. That male a huge difference and helps reduce sway. Good luck this camping season and Happy Camping!

      Kalocals no problem. Glad my video could assist you with any questions or doubts you may had. We don't travel too far with our TT but this truck does the job. With all gear loaded up, gas passengers, batteries, LP tanks, and hitch weight itself, I am still within or below that 80% threshold. Saying that I have more than 20% cushion as far as weight.

    Nice video! I have a 2012 Silverado w/ the 3.42 gears (Max Trailering Package) and I tow my 26ft Keystone Cougar (5900lbs dry-6500ish lbs loaded) TT pretty well. I can honestly say the HD cooler that comes stock with the Silverado sucks! I installed a 40K TruCool trans cooler and I do not go over 170 degrees trans temp. When I towed it with the stock trans cooler on a 50 degree day back in March, my trans temp was almost 220 degrees! I have taken it out about 10 times this year and the Silverado does really good. Steep inclines obviously your speed will drop. On my way to the Oregon beach there is a steep incline for roughly 5-7 miles and my speed drops to about 45mph if I run it any harder my RPM will sky rocket and yea. I normally get between 9-11 MPG and never drive over 65mph when towing (Stopping distance-You will find out!) This the probably the max weight I would tow comfortably, I think anything more than 7,000lbs would be a lot for a 1/2 ton. My Silverado is rated at towing 9,600lbs but maybe that's in a farm field towing. I can definitely feel the weight and trailer behind me that's for sure. Next truck will be the 3500 Duramax 6.6 long bed diesel!

  • @garyseeseverything8615

    Cool video thank you! That towing is impressive for a small block 5.3 the plus side is it fuel efficient, but it’s got muscle. You can add a supercharger for serious power, but the truck pull fine completely stock. Trans cooler and brakes is a plus.

      Yeah not a lot of 1/2 ton videos out there. Your suburban will do just fine towing that amount of weight. Just make sure you're loaded up correct with 10 to 15 % tongue weight (that includes passengers too) and that Equalizer Weight Distribution hitch with 4 point sway control is night and day compared to your normal WDH with friction. Sway bar. Wish you the best of luck this camping season. Happy Camping!

    • @victorurbina2944
      @victorurbina2944  Před 6 lety +1

      Andy Cook yes look on eBay and there is a company called CIPA. Those are by far the best tow mirrors that look as though they belong on the vehicle. 45.00 to 60.00 bucks depending on seller. I called my GM dealer and they want about 900 bucks to install and wire factory tow mirrors. I'll just stick with the CIPA mirrors as I tow about 6 times a season. You tube the mirrors and let me know what you think. Also, I just installed a Derale transmission oil cooler as well and added a leaf spring and Timbrens SES since this video. All I have left to so is change out the China bomb trailer tires and going with Goodyear Endurance Trailer Tires. Research those as well. Made in USA and great reviews.

  • @heretodaygone2morrowrving231

    Although the specs on the Chevy 1500 are probably capable of towing that TT I would refrain from that due to adding passengers, gear. Climbing mountainous areas would be really tolling on that small 5.3. I tried that with my ram 1500 and it was not up to my comfort just capable over kill is always a safer bet

    • @victorurbina2944
      @victorurbina2944  Před 6 lety +1

      Rocky Cadieux drilled rotors tend to crack but slotted are an improvement on the drilled rotors. I ended up just going with the regular style premium rotors and premium NAPA pads. Trans temp is 190ish regular driving but can get up to 210 to 220 when towing depending on grade of the road and outside ambient temperature. According to GM that's normal but I rather have an external trans cooler to keep temps down just a bit for comfort reasons.

    • @rockycadieux4642
      @rockycadieux4642 Před 6 lety +1

      I'm wondering about the temp. I'd think GM has it that high for a reason, but everyone I talk to says cooler is better. My friends with fords like their temps at 175. I've got a 2016 Silverado Lt with 5.3 3.42 with six speed, tow package. Looking at a 26 ft trailer with a GVWR of 7600. All the specs show I'm good on weight, and your video helped me confirm that. Thanks.

      @victorurbina2944  Před 6 lety +2

      You'll be fine. These truck are rated to tow. I read an article somewhere that really eased my mind. It said that today's 1/2 ton trucks are the 3/4 ton trucks of yesteryear. Truck manufacturers know to leave room for margin of error. I myself pack what I need such as clothes, and camping gear and your basic essentials. I don't fill my tanks at all and as far as food, we do our shopping at Walmart once we set up camp. Once we leave, everything that was not used gets tossed. Most of it is perishable anyway. Get better rated tires for your TT as well. Ditch the China Bombs and go with Goodyear Endurance Trailer Tires if it's in your budget. Get them from Discount Tire or a national dealer with replacement plan. You're buying peice of mind of having a large network to replace that tire in case of a blowout or flat . I kept my old tires and bought 2 new Jayco rims and mounted 2 for spares.

    • @victorurbina2944
      @victorurbina2944  Před 5 lety +1

      Yes. After this video we took a long trip down from Illinois to Texas. We had to go through the Ozark Mountains in Missouri and the truck handled fine and was just enough truck for that trip. The payload on this particular truck is right around 1,600 lbs. It was only me my wife and 8 year old son and loaded down light with no water in holding tanks. Basically in a nut shell it will do the job if you are traveling light on flat land but once you are loaded heavy and into the Mountains you're asking for problems. Equalizer WDH did a great job until we got to Corpus Christi where is it always windy (20 to 30 mph) and the tail was wagging the dog in a manner where we had to pull over. Needless to say it was a learning experience and I have since traded my 2014 Silverado for a 2015 Ford F250 Platinum 6.2 gasser. A lot (double) the payload and truck is heavier than the travel trailer F250 is about 2,000 lbs heavier than the Silverado1500. I think this was the set up I should have went with in the first place. But as always, travel trailering is a learning curve and you have to figure things out as you go. Good luck and safe travels!

    I wanted to ask you how it was towing I just got a camper about the same weight and it pulls ok sway and ride are great but I’m running 2500-2700 rpms at 65 and getting about 6.5 mpg any suggestions. I was using tow haul mode and I believe I have a 3.73 rear gear 07 Suburban 5.3

    • @victorurbina2944
      @victorurbina2944  Před 6 lety

      How old is your vehicle? I just took a long trip from Illinois to Texas with no issues. A gas engine towing 7k lbs will stay around 2300 to 2700 RPM while cruising at 65mph. That's normal. If you have an older suburban then the engine may be struggling a bit an running at higher RPM. Grade of land and payload also factor in the trucks performance. Be safe and run all your numbers. Get to a CAT scale and weigh the truck with entire family and full tank of gas. Then go back with camper and re-weigh and deduct the truck weight from the hitched up weight and you'll get an exact weight of what you are pulling. Also, check your tongue weight as that weight goes toward payload as well. But I wouldn't worry about the RPM. If you feel its revving too high then bring it down to 60 MPH and get close to that 2200 rpm area. Towing with a gasser you're not gonna see anything below 2,000 rpm unless it's a Ford EcoBoost which revs around 17 to 1,800 RPM. Almost in the same realm of a diesel truck.

    • @victorurbina2944
      @victorurbina2944  Před 6 lety +1

      But to answer your question my truck did great. Loaded down we were at 7,400 lbs on the travel trailer with 900 lbs of tongue weight. No sway at all with Equalizer WDH. Nice smooth 65 MPH ride through the Ozark mountains of Missouri.

      Just and update. I just recently traded in the Chevy Silverado 1500 for a Ford F250 Platinum gasser with the 6.2. The Silverado did just fine but I was pushing the limits of the truck when it came down to payload. I loved the truck and did well but that was just me the wife and one 9 year old son. I think we had 200 lbs to spare on payload just with us and couldn't imagine if we had a truck full of adults, items in bed of truck and needed to fill our fresh water tank to use the bathroom. I made this decision as the the F250 had way more payload and don't have to crunch numbers and is much more stable on the road while towing. It truly is a night and day difference. Video to come very soon.

      Joshua Sullinger the Equalizer WDH with 4 point sway control is the best I have used. Its worth the 900 bucks for the added security. There is that Hensley Arrow hitch but I can't justify paying over 2 grand when my set up works just fine.

      victor urbina after driving it around i had to get a sway control wdh hitch so i paid about 600 bucks and got a blue ox and i tell you it was great driving with it.

      Joshua Sullinger I'm telling you. No matter which sway control you go with, it's best to have one than not. I bet you feel more stable with less sway. When you're towing anything over 5,000 lbs I feel a WDH and sway control are a must. Glad you found a set up that works for you.
