Maybe this is the best recording of Desh ever recorded. The best on CZcams I'm sure. Beautiful taans and gamakas. Splendid! He was THE BEST. This is Yoga, a special connection between him, his guru and God. All aligned through nature and the geometry of sound. RIP.

i do not have the audacity to try and compare legends such as Pt Ravi Shankarji, Ustad Vilayat Khansaab and Pt Nikhil Banerjee
all three of them are great masters, in their own rights, yet, out of the three Nikhil Banerjee's playing has a soothing quality about it
while both Vilayat Khansaab and Ravi Shankarji have always been more outgoing, more worldlywise and 'pushy' than Pt Banerjee
the more serene Pt Banerjee has been in a class by himself, in my humble opinion

Pt. Nikhil Banerjee is unparalleled for the soothing sound of the Sitar, peerless. While Pt. Ravi Shankar was unparalleled for the Dhrupad ang and Ud. Vilayat Khan was for the gayaki style. Sound quality, the impact of the sound goes to Nikhil Banerjee.

He was so much better than the more successful and popular ravi shankar who simply did not have the technique for sapat taankari. it is surprising that they both learnt with allaudin khan, and yet of the two it was Nikhil bannerji who learnt to play the sitar correctly and much better. NB was also greatly influenced by Vilayat Khan. in this compostion in Desh, he is playing the bandish and tanas of the imdad khani gharana. What a wonderful rendering of Desh.

I think it is unfair to compare two great maestros. Because one tends to apply parameters those one likes. But indian classical is caladioscope. If you are RASIK open to all , if you are artist follow the one you like most.

Anzay Warid Ji, comparison between two exponents of an instrument is best engaged by those who are seeking attention from other listeners. So let me congratulate you on that count, as you have succeeded in that.
Now coming to the two artistes, Pandit Nikhil Banerjee and Pandit Ravishankar are both stars in their own right. With much pity I must say that You have failed to enjoy the music of Ravi shankar. I can suggest you of ways to do so, you can start with following his musical phrases (if you follow the technicalities that is) while sticking to the raag structure completely. If you want to listen to his sapaat taankari then go back to his recordings pre 1965. But then sapaat taankari is not everything in a rendition. There is much more. And that much more is there in Panditji's laykaari, use of different Baaj, and most importantly, the way he used to treat each raag by its different moods - he never rendered two raagas in the same way. Who else could do the same?!
So, let's just listen to these great musicians and enjoy or learn (if the listener is a musician too) instead of trying to attract attention. What say you??

      @writabratamukherjee3941 Před 6 lety +1

Very unfortunate...but I think showmanship is little bit necessary...Ravi Shankar didn't earn that at very early stages of his carrier...but soon he realised the necessity, that is why we got so many recordings of him and interviews....but unfortunately there are very few recordings of a legendary maestro like Nikhil Banerjee ! his non-recognition doesn't pain me but the lesser opportunity to know his music makes me worried .

Writabrata Mukherjee Nikhilda is more heard and appreciated by true music lovers. Ravishankar is infact disliked due to his superficiality of renditions. Had Nikhilda was a bit shrewd, we would not have his legacy of extraordinary depth and तन्मयता of his music. Also there are innumerable renditions, live recordings of him were published posthumously. Thank God for let Nikhilda keep him the way he was.
      thanks

So sad that till date I didn't get a good biography on Panditji. The Bengali one - Taar chire geche Kobe, is a subpar book compared to RagAnurag or Komal Gandhar , both of other two great maestros. This really irks me. We want to know more about his concerts, his life, his music. He was a saint after all.

When I hear Nikhil Banerjee play, I think of what the late American Jazz
Pianist Bill Evans once so eloquently stated, "There is a Japanese
visual art in which the artist is forced to be spontaneous. He must
paint on a thin stretched parchment with a special brush and black water
paint in such a way that an unnatural or interrupted stroke will
destroy the line or break through the parchment. Erasures or changes are
impossible. These artists must practice a particular discipline, that
of allowing the idea to express itself in communication with their hands
in such a direct way that deliberation cannot interfere. The resulting
pictures lack the complex composition and textures of ordinary painting,
but it is said that those who see will find something captured that
      escapes explanation."
