Most people know about Petty Enterprises and Level Cross NC...but did you know the entire lifespan of Petty Enterprises took place on the same piece of land Richard and Maurice were born and raised on? Lee Petty started racing in the 1940s and used a small A frame wooden structure with a dirt floor they had built to be a reaper shed (hay bail making equipment). Dale Inman was there since day one starting as a little kid eventually becoming Richards crew chief for all 7 title seasons. Dale shows us around and shares some firsthand history! The original Petty Enterprises engine room is STILL being used to build engines today! They use the former race shop facility now for "Petty's Garage" custom builds, parts, and restorations!

I heard Adam was buried at the petty property.
I do it for DALE #3 EVERYDAY.
I remember seeing pictures of wrecked cars parked in the "Petty Woods" in some car magazine. Did you see anything like that?
Dale Inman should not feel bad about saying “We” when describing things. He was their for a lot of it.
Absolutely. He is the only non Petty from PE in the HOF.
and he is the greatest crew chief in the history of the sport when it comes to raw stats. wins, t5s, 10s, and cups. by a long shot. i'm sure not all those were solely richard's.
I agree. I think he is a large part of why Petty Enterprises was so successful. He is almost too humble..Take the credit you deserve sir.
Amen
Yep- dale was an integral part of it all and a great crew chief . When he left Petty wasn't the same nor was the team , I heard Linda make comments about that somewhere . . Richard and Dale always so very close .
Dale is 85 yo and his memory is still pretty good. When he was younger he was a BIG strong and tough man and a real nice guy. The death of Adam Petty was real hard on him. I hear he was like a second Dad to Adam. They don't make em like that any longer.
Dude, you're absolutely killing it with the NASCAR history. This is wild that you're getting all of this access!! So incredible.
Glad all of these folks are so happy to share it too!
You gotta love Stapleton and Logan giving us history lessons on what made NASCAR great back in the day. Can’t thank u guys enough for giving us this amazing content
Thanks Jared we are glad you appreciate this stuff as much as we do!!
Dale Inman is allowed to say 'we'...! After all, he's a NASCAR Hall of Fame member...! He can say we...! Thanks, keep up your awesomeness and go enjoy some nature today...!
Well said!
It’s always been a team sport, and Dale was a huge part of Pettys team!
The older generation is a walking history book and we should all be fortunate enough to hear their stories because they are fading fast and with them our history. What a true blessing and privilege it is for me to hear this man describe his life, a different time but all the same struggles.
Absolutely true Tim. We are glad you’re here
Mitchell you are filling a huge hole in the history of NASCAR
I’m glad you get a hold of these legends!
What is so amazing is the shops are still in use restoring cars an putting the petty touch on Cameros ,mustangs an changers and challengers
Awsome crew chief!! 8 Championships and 7 with Richard!
Got a chance to meet Dale Inman when we stopped here. Super nice guy!
Great video, I'm 63 years old, and I've liked Richard Petty since I was around 8 years old, my all time favorite stock car driver. While growing up, several things were synonymous for me in stock car racing, (1)Richard Petty, (2) 426 Hemi's, (3) Mopar, and (4) STP racing. Long live the King.
Hey I'm 65 and I'm sure we read the same book it's all the same movie then pulling for petty since I was about 12:00 1970 69 somewhere around there back then there's a lot about strategy and guts I called them loaded dump trucks as in the way they handled anyway nice to know there's still a few of us around take care!
63 myself first race I attended not quiet 5 years old. 1964 daytona 500. Got his autograph that day and became lifetime fan. Long live the king. Young people are hurting not many decent heroes to look up to nowadays
Im 54 years old & its hard to realize being my age & still having my childhood hero around
I got to visit there and got hangout with Dale and Richard what amazing people and an amazing place
That’s awesome you got both of them
Inman's 8 Championships aren't mentioned often enough today. Dale had it correct the 1st time when he said "We". Richard Petty wouldve been successful but he wouldn't have won 200 races & 7 championships without Dale Inman as crew chief. Inman, Richard, & Maurice were the perfect combination.
Totally agree i mean it’s obvious what happen to the team when he left the first time.
Dale Inman proved he was the best when he did it with labonte in 84. Richard never won the whole thing without him
Dude this is soooooo damn cool. Pure NASCAR royalty right there! You are living the freaking dream!
Thanks Jebediah!! Definitely pretty wild when I think about it..
22:58 7 Championships plus 1 more. He is "THE MAN". Respect to you sir.
Absolutely 💪🏻
Have much respect for Dale Inman
the white shorts and the black pants is what I found most interesting about his video!! Don't get me wrong, loved the video, that was just my favorite parts!
Man I’m jealous this is my dream right there. To have Dale or Richard walk me around there and tell me about it
Thank You, for educating the youth of today cause they need to remember what someone has done before, remember your past (mistakes) and your Future will be Brighter (if you remember)
Thanks For Uploading Richard Petty Number 43 Stp Buick Regal From 1981
The cab over dodge truck is priceless and needs restoration work done for the museum
Thank you for your service Dale!
Mr Inman, you were and still are part of the Petty family & team, us fans don't mind you saying "we" when referring to the Petty team, you earn that sir...
I absolutely LOVE these shop tour videos. This Petty Enterprises facility may not look like much compared to today's modern mega shops like you'll find at Hendrick Motorsports, Roush Racing or Joe Gibbs, but in its heyday, Petty Enterprises was a monster facility that dwarfed the competition. It is also interesting to see how the Petty shops grew and expanded over time. Most of the present day big operations are in one enormous single building, divided into multiple departments for specialty work. Petty's shop started as a shed and grew into numerous separate buildings over a 40 year period that kind of became their own specialty areas. Yet despite the large overall size. the Petty Enterprises shop still maintains that family business feel, whereas today's shops are more like a corporate fueled arms race that are as much geared toward keeping up with the Joneses as they are being functional facilities for building and maintaining race cars. The older shops are more spartan without as much fluff. As a blue collar guy, I find those more appealing and interesting.
Very true man
Big fancy Shops are nice too look at, but those older shops just have smell and feeling to them. My grandpa has a stand alone Garage (Glorified shed) that a smell will catch my attention and boom there I am Playing in the dirt with hot wheels while he was fixing something on a car. Visting older shops like that always have the history in the present and that homely feel
Dale is a great guy. Stopped by his house during a yard sale and his wife talked with us a while. Dale had a shoulder injury due to a motorcycle accident on a bike Richard had given him. Great memories.
I'm not even a nascar fan but this series of talking to the old guys and learning the history is fascinating. I did meet Richard at a laneco food store behind Nazareth speed way in the 80's when I was a kid at a autograph session. Good memories.
dale Inman. greatest crew chief of all time
This is what it's all about. The Pettys (including Dale Inman) earned everything they got, and even though they had a "little bit" of success, they never forgot where they came from, and that's why I've always been able to relate to them so much. As the series grew, their shops had to grow to make it all work, but the family was always at the core of it all.
I can't believe family members worked so well together for over 25 years without arguing constantly.
Listen to interviews with Richard, Dale, and Kyle, they always downplay their accomplishments. It has never been “I did this” or “I won that” and it has always been about the team and the fans.
He may be ~86 but he sure does remember a lot and convey it well...some serious history here in americas biggest racing family
Richard has been my driver since the 70s, but Dale don't keep apologizing for saying 'we'. You were the man behind the machine that got Richard, the car and team into victory lane!
I had a 1969 Dodge Charger with a 383 4speed in it that I would have loved to have gotten you under the hood of for an afternoon!
Like this video says you are the only crew chief with 8 championships, stop selling yourself short. It took everyone to make the team to achieve everything that you all did as a team. Thank you fir all the memories.
I've visited the Petty Museum and was amazed by how much history has been saved there, or at least reproduced. My granddaughters colored a picture of the Cars movie Strip Weathers Superbird, left them with the lady behind the counter along with our address. Richard signed both pictures and sent them to us, and I had them framed for the girls. I cannot adequately describe how much I have enjoyed watching your history videos- I just got started with the North Wilkesboro, Rockingham and now Petty Enterprises videos, can't wait to go down the rabbit hole even further!
Wow man that’s awesome. We are so glad you’re here!
I vistited the Petty Museum back in 2001 , it was the first building on the right as you came into the driveway . It was more like a large 2 stall garage , and I believe Richards mom still lived in the house . If memory serves me right , there was a row of single stall garages out back . I have pictures of the inside .The door faced the driveway and as I was leaving , an older lady was driving by noticed me , gave me a big smile and waved , I never did know who it was .
Always comment as WE.. Dale Inman,, yes you are Petty Enterprises.
Love this one!! Dale is such a nice, humble guy.
Ask and Ye Shall Receive…. I mentioned I’d love for you to do a Petty history and BAM! Thanks So Much!!
I could watch these ole skool/throw back videos every day! Thanks Mitchell and Miss Logan!
Thanks Doug we are glad to have you on the team 💪🏻
I wish I could like this comment multiple times.
Great video. As a kid in the 70's King Richard was the man! I had STP stickers on everything. LOL
Wow..I'm Australian...and I know who Dale Inman is..
What a humble man... I keep saying we...I mean Richsrd or Lee..
Thanks for doing what your doing and help educate me..
We are glad you're here Simon!
You guys never cease to amaze me. You covered The King's Lair. The places you're getting into are amazing. Thank you so much for documenting another piece of History that will live on forever.
You are doing a great job putting racing history memories to the forefront. I enjoy watching all the teams and shops you both are visiting. Keep up the good work. This history is much needed to share and save for future fans to enjoy.....
Our pleasure!
Been there twice, love the place and its history
Great video thanks for posting. First time I met Dale Inman was in 1972 when I was going to the races with bud Moore and his wife Betty and my best friend Greg Moore. I was 17 at the time and when I shook dales hand I thought he was going to crush it. Grip like a vice. Real nice man then and now
That’s awesome lol. We’d love to meet Greg Moore
Watching Dale's limp become more and more pronounced, he was taking deeper and deeper breath's and puff'n more and more as he led Mitchell and Logan through the buildings only goes to show how much it took out of his old, worn out body. BUT he was a trooper and continued on. Mostly because it brought back soooooo many years chalk full of memories,, he retrieved sooooo many snippits, albeit; 'movies in his mind' (my ol Grandma would call her memories that) of yesteryear and it was fun but it did take a toll on his body. We know the kids thanked him for the time he spent with them but perhaps it would take an elder like me (I'm 75) to notice he became more and more 'a hurt'n unit' as time went along.
Thanks man. Dale is a champ
Your living the dream my friends. To me this is the top shop of all time. Thanks guys.
Thanks Greg!!
Seeing that GP hood is cool that's who I work for now.
I remember the worker who walked by when they built a motor for the West Coast Custom Continental Tire Camaro inside that room
That old single screw cab over is awesome. See the bingo cads on it.
I met Mr Inman and Mr Petty today at the shop and they were super friendly. Great video 👍
Thats awesome. Thank you Scott
Richard Petty is my all time favorite driver. What an awesome video. I can't wait for the museum portion of the video.
Dale Inman, cooler then anything you seen in this video. 85 years old comedian.
Thank you so much. I am so glad that you guy's are providing this content. AWESOME!!!!!!
Very cool of Mr Iman to give you this tour
Speechless.
Guys like Dale, with all their race history, won't be around forever. Glad you and Logan are doing so much to capture and preserve the history. What is also something to focus on is that there is a lot of business still being done in all those buildings.
I was about 7 when I first saw Richard's 1972 Charger that he briefly raced ( between the 72 Plymouth and the 73 Charger ) That vision has shaped my life!
This is my favorite video so far
Once again you guys hit it out of the park.possibly one of your best.In 1967 I was stationed at dover Delaware and a buddy and I were one our way to Richmond va. We met the petty they were in a dodge box truck with a open trailer with the race car,I will always remember that. Keep the history stories going.
That’s awesome man. Thank you
BTW thanks for the Lake Speed content, I was at his win in Darlington, i watch from the infield. It was Awesome
That man is a walking, talking history book. I wish I knew half, of what he forgot!
Interesting? It’s gold Jerry! Pure gold! I could listen to Dale Inman all day. Not only does he have 8 cup championships as a crew chief with tons of stories, he has a neat voice and could probably even do radio or tv commentating.
A buddy of mine has what the collector said was the last Charger built by Petty Enterprises. Really enjoyed this video, thanks for taking the time post it for us Nascar fans!
Thanks gordon!! We are glad you’re here with us
Thanks Mitch and Logan Good job.
Petty's granddaughters went to the school I taught at. Missed teaching the youngest by a year. At graduation the first year, I was sitting up front with the faculty. I see a group of people come in late. In that group of people was a man wearing the iconic cowboy hat. I was sitting there thinking, "Cool! That's Petty!" Some of the other teachers talked about how the friends of the girls only knew him as the voice of the blue car in Cars.
Mr the king 😂
This is the BEST Vid of them all. 10 outta 10. Keep um Comming
Thanks. My favorite family as a kid. So much history.
I started this video because I didn't want to get up and do dishes... and when you get to the merch pitch I was like why was this video only 5 minutes long... yeah that good. To bad Junor isn't still alive. That would have been an epic video...
the greatest, period.

Gold eagle. Boom tube with wrench beyond very clever. I was hoping you would cover Pettys' garages. Thanks

@@Bucketheadland1 You tha man, very cool it is.
When I was a kid, I tried to watch as many races on tv as I could, just to watch Richard Petty. I loved his cars. Awesome video !
this is solid country gold my man
Thanks Travis we appreciate you
As an overseas viewer I'm loving seeing all this history. Things we never would get to see otherwise. Thank you and keep it up !
I can’t wait for the next videos.
Awesome to see this content.
Cool hat looks like the old Unical logo. Great video. Your persistence paid off. I really enjoy the stories and from an 8 time Nascar Crewchief. Wow. Thanks guys
Oh and the old Winston Cup style shirts are really cool
Once again knocked it out of the park. Great video y'all.
Thanks man!
This is such a great series on Richard Petty!
👑 MAY THE KING LIVE FOREVER 👑🙏👍👍👍👍
I lived right down the road in HP 1972 when I was a little boy in a motel/apartments all RP mechanics would stay there, it was cool. They wore white coveralls with a big STP patch on back. I met RP awhile back and he said that motel/apartments was still there and being used. The pool was gone though. I need to go back down and see how it has grown, it was just a 2 lane road.
I so enjoy you're videos. I need to buy some merchandise from you ,I ask everyone who enjoys the history of racing to support this channel.
Thank you so much Jeff!
Another great video! Thank you for preserving this history. This motivates me to go to NC and visit Petty Inc. Thanks!!
You should!
I love what y’all got going on and see nothing but continued growth and success with it. All the best yall.
"I keep saying 'we' but of course I really mean..."
Nascar is a team sport. You're part of the team too, Dale!
A living legend. THE Dale Inman. Thank you for doing what we never had the balls to do and seek this stuff out. It's truly incredible what you are doing for the history of our sport
I can remember being the biggest Richard Petty fan & my dad taking me & my twin brother to Atlanta motor speedway when I was 8yrs old in 1972 & my dad took us in the infield & he seen the silver fox David Pearson walking toward us & said go get his autograph & still to this day I can remember throwing my ice cream cone down saying no, I want to see Richard Petty.. man what a spoiled brat I was, I went onto like Harry Gant in the Skoal bandit & loved Rusty Wallace from 1987 until the day he retired but I will never forget king Richard! 🏁 Thank you Stapleton for bringing back memories, you & your wife do an awesome job bringing back history! I'm a fan for life!
Dang that’s funny 😂 thanks man
Legend hero to the car gods
I've gone by the Petty Museum on the way home from the fall CMS the past 3 years. October 2021, I was standing between the Museum's room with the merch, knives, Lee exhibit, etc. and the red floor room. Dale pulled up in his little, late model pick-up. After getting out of his truck, he walked over, asked how I was, and asked if we'd met. I told him "yes sir, we've met a handful of times - including here a year ago." He replied seriously "well, don't tell me your name because I don't remember names." He said it seriously but not in a mean manner. I suppressed my smirk, and we talked in the parking lot for maybe 10-15 minutes about the Roval; Nashville Fairgrounds; his well-told selected racing memories; his son-in-law, former NASCAR crewman/crew chief, and friend of mine Chris Hussey; etc. Then he was done. "OK, I gotta go in the office." Boom, over. But was another memorable experience as a #PettyLifer. Great video.
Dale is an awesome dude. He even talked to people in the museum when we were walking around for the filming 😂
That covered some great history.
The inside access is unprecedented for a CZcamsr!!
I like to think we’re a bit different than the rest
Mitchell, you really should try to find some old paneling from an old office like that to decorate your office with. That would really open some conversations. So cool! Love the video.
That’d be awesome 😂😂
