  • Koh-I-Noor Polycolor 144 Set Review
    I was very fortunate to have received some inside information from Koh-I-Noor about a year and a half ago about the launch of this very set, I say fortunate, however I have kept the information to my self and so I have been living with the excitement all on my own. Joking aside, the Koh-I-Noor Polycolor 144 set is finally here and in this video I take a look at the set with you.
    A couple of nights ago I help a live stream just giving a sneak peak at this amazing set from Koh-I-Noor, however I took the video down because the video quality was really quite bad. I really loved doing the actual live stream and chatting with you all but I just couldn't get the lighting right with the darkness of my living room and so I just removed it completely. I will however be fixing the issues I have with live streaming but that is going to cost a bit of money and thus time to save.

    Another fantastic review. I always read the comments and find your comment "I don't have fans just friends" so very touching. I'm sure your lighting situation will be resolved soon. You have such a comprehensive review of each and every product. When I want or need to know information, I always check what you have to say about a product as I know you will be honest in your opinion and research. Thank you so very much for all that you do in the coloring community!

      Laura you are too kind, thank you so very much for you lovely comment. I always used to listen to CZcamsrs refer to their viewers as fans and would think to myself, “Tom Cruise has fans, Julia Roberts has fans, but us lot on CZcams, we have friends.” I don’t know I always just thought of the concept a bit “Them and Us” and I don’t personally like that.
      The way I personally look at this situation is. Without you guys, my channel would be nonexistent, sure I could keep making videos but if there was no benefit to anyone other than myself then there would be no point. But when I read the amazing comments I get or messages from people saying that the reviews have helped them, I’m blown away. And to be honest I need you guys a lot more than you need me and I don’t mean for views.
      I guess the whole CZcams thing is a bit selfish from my side of things because I get so much from the people who watch my videos. Friendship, conversation, advice and so much more and because of that I always feel so indebted to you all, there is a part of me that feels I am taking advantage of you all because of what I get out of this. This is why I try to do as many giveaways as possible, always check my links and make sure that I am sending you all to the very cheapest product out there on Amazon etc.
      Any way Laura, thank you so very much for your wonderful comment and I am so glad you get something from the reviews, I don’t even like calling them “My reviews” because when I upload them they are everyone’s 😄😄
      Have a wonderful day, keep safe and stay well.

    It was unbeknownst to me that they were planning to premiere this 144 set. After holding out for years, while hoping for more colors, I conceded and bought the 72 set nearly 6 months ago. It would be awesome if they could make the “new” 72 pencils available separately, especially since they are already packaged in two separate tins. I would buy the additional 72 pencils in a flash.

      Thank you so much my friend but I prefer to call people who watch my videos friends rather than fans. I have a soft spot for K-I-N stuff, I really love their portrait set, and their finicky lead holders.
    I noticed that you were quite enamoured with the Almond Brown here...was wondering--would a video or video series on unique colours throughout brands be possible? You know, those handfuls of colours that you fall in love with that no other brand gets quite right, or even a peerless colour with no analog in any other sets?
    I may have asked this before. It would be helpful to people looking to buy unique colours open stock. Not sure if videos like those have been done yet, can't think of anyone more qualified, you must have handled most coloured pencils in existence at this point!

I do like the polycolors. I live in Alaska and only one shop carries these single and they do not have the new ones. I paid 139.00 USD which is less than 1.00 per pencil and not a bad price on my end.....I also got free shipping so not too bad. TY again for a great review and please stay safe!!!

    They look lovely. Thank you. I'm so pleased they have given this set colour names. It's just not easy finding the pencil from a number. They have put the name in a daft place, so we will have to be inventive and stick labels on them I suppose. I have the 72 set and the portrait set. The only way I could find out which colours were repeated was to ask the question of other Amazon buyers in the feedback section. I asked if someone could list the pencil numbers of the portrait set. And someone did and so I could work out which were repeats and which new colours.

      I assume it's 144 and not 150, because of the packaging. They already have the 72 set. In order to sell a bigger set, they just doubled up the 72 set by adding another tin of 72. Releasing a set of 150 would require investing in a whole new type of package, which is very costly.

    Just as a bit of an update, this 144 set still does not seem to be available from Amazon or any other UK art supplies store, although you can get the 72 pencil set. However, it does seem to be readily available from an eBay seller in Europe. Not sure why this should be as Covid, while not having completely gone away, does not seem to be affecting distribution of most goods of late. Anyway, I'm just posting this should anyone find the information useful.

    • @TheArtGearGuide
      @TheArtGearGuide  Před rokem +2

      Hi Keith, you are indeed right, the 144 set of Koh-I-Noor has been incredibly illusive from the moment it was announced and has never really took off for whatever reason. But the same applies to a lot of the Koh-I-Noor products here in the West at least and it is such a shame.
      When I have reviewed Koh-I-Noor products in the past I have had many people from the Czech Republic, Czechia and that area of the world thank me for reviewing Koh-I-Noor products. They tell me every kid going to school used Koh-I-Noor products, and that they can't understand why they don't see more artists use Koh-I-Noor products to which I totally agree with. I have used many Koh-I-Noor products and they are excellent quality for the money.
      Now some of the reason they are not reviewed a lot or used a lot here in the west could be down to the marketing from Koh-I-Noor, I can't say for sure because I am pretty new to the art world in the grand scheme of things. I have only been running this channel 7 years I think and so that is the same amount of time I have been drawing and using art supplies. I couldn't tell you if there was a bigger push by Koh-I-Noor maybe 10 or 15 years ago and they just never got anywhere and stopped.
      It is a shame as I would love to walk into a store here in the UK and find a set of Koh-I-Noor Polycolor and in particular that 144 set because it really is a gorgeous set. Thanks as always for your comment and support

    • @keithscholes6158
      @keithscholes6158 Před rokem

      @@TheArtGearGuide Thanks for your reply, I posted my comment as a kind of 'point of information' for anyone who might be looking for a set. Your extension of what I flagged up is a useful and much fuller explanation than my own. I have become interested in this particular set as I have recently bought The Colored Pencil Manual by Veronica Winters and also pushed the boat out a little by signing up for her associated online course. In the book and course she uses Prismacolor Premier, Koh-i-Noor Polycolor and a few Caran D'Ache Pablo pencils for her follow along exercises. I already have a set of Prismacolors and only a few of the Caran D'Ache pencils (which can be easily bought as stock singles) are needed, so getting hold of the Koh-i-Noor pencils was the only extra requirement. Her use of the Koh-i-noor set was unusual as most books seem to recommend the Faber Castell Polychromos pencils for that particular niche. I could have probably filled in with pencils that I have in other sets, but I must admit buying art materials has become something of a secret vice and as a relative beginner (not to mention being slightly obsessive about such things) I decided to follow her as closely as I could. In any case the cost of the Koh-i-Noor's seemed pretty reasonable in comparison with most high end pencil sets and I was encouraged by your positive review. I was a little surprised to find that the 144 set was virtually unavailable in the UK, even on Amazon. Still I have ordered the 144 set via eBay, so fingers crossed that they arrive promptly and safely, while I was about it I also ordered a set of the Koh-I-Noor pure pigment pencils from Amazon as they seemed something of a bargain and I am hoping that they will come in useful for backgrounds, which seem to eat up the more expensive coloured pencils. I hope you don't mind me posting this long slightly rambling reply and also hope that you will find something of interest in it.

    Ok .. now I have to do a sub to you! At least you answered all my questions about Koh-I-Noor! And I was wondering to find some in the net (e.g. USA with $70 Shipping for me sitting in #Austria) XD and I thought they gave up this set. But actually it is the opposite! I really like your reviews and as I'm tested the Koh-I-Noor (36 pack) compared to my Polychromos ... I have to say I'll go for Koh-I-Noor just because they ain't that sticky on the paper (working on Stonehenge WHITE 250gsm) and you can do extremly fine nouances with the Koh-I-Noor where the Polychromos (which are actually know for rather hardness) are to sticky to me. ... ok don't mention Prismacolor .. it is like lipstick -.- I love the powdery behaviour of Koh-I-Noor on light apply as well as the smoothness which comes up if I'm on a more heavy hand. The fact they come up with 144 colours and are lightfast (currently on practical testing!) is enough for me to say -> using it for professional work! Keep the head up - sh!t happens and I'm really honoring you for doing that video additionally to your livestream just because you ain't happy with the quality! Cheers!

      You can purchase them on eBay, obviously I am not sure what country you live in but the shipments are from Poland and I am pretty sure they ship globally, they currently have 132 sets available.
      Thing is tho with all the shutdowns, country closures, so many art supplies are struggling either getting wood for the pencils shipped to them or the pencils shipped out once they get the wood and the same is true for other supplies. It is a crazy world we live in at the minute.

    I laughed at your comment on how messed up the sets are. The Pitt Artist brush pens (my favourite medium) are just as bad. I had to make a chart, and I still got confused, because what their website says is in each set doesn't always match what's in the set you buy. To make it even worse, the packaging doesn't indicate colour numbers or names, and it's too opaque to read through. A few times it's been "Surprise! You thought violet and flamingo pink were in this set but it's manga flesh tones!" I now only buy open stock, even when the sets are dirt-cheap on sale and even if I have to wait, because I now have seven terracotta and six light flesh. 😂

    Hi art gear. Please reply. When is this set going to be available?? I hope Amazon UK sells it as their 72 set is selling for £46. But the 144 set is only on eBay for like £108 😕 I'm hoping Amazon will sell for about £85. I have 120 polychromos but I'm scared to use them. So I'm waiting for my castle arts to practice with.

    • @TheArtGearGuide
      @TheArtGearGuide  Před 4 lety +3

      I am waiting to hear from Koh-I-Noor as to when their 144 set will be available in various different countries and Amazon, as soon as I get the information I will post on social media and update my blog post about the set. I unfortunately can’t see them being sold for as low as £85 that equates to about 0.59 pence a pencil. Unfortunately because of the increased popularity of the medium everywhere is increasing their prices. A 24 set of Derwent Drawing used to cost on Amazon about £19 now they are closer to £50. Same with the likes of Prismacolor, a few years back the 150 set could be bought for £80-90 and now they are £172. Popularity of the medium is making the companies cash in I am afraid. But I will let you know as soon as they are available.
      As for not using your Polychromos, I completely get your feelings behind why you don’t want to use them. I bought the 76 set of Luminance really early into my art journey so to speak and felt exactly the same way for a while.
      But what you got to remember is this, you have the 120 set, that means you have that set for life, when you use a certain Color until it is run out, £1.30 or something like that gets you a replacement. So try not to worry about using them, that’s what they were made for, but in the same light I completely understand your sentiment.

    Are these oil or waxed based? On certain surfaces, such as drafting film, wax based pencils can develop a sort of white glaze in the course of time, so I would really like to know. Was looking forward to seeing how they blend with odorless mineral spirits, have you tried it?
    Tried contacting their customer service some months ago, but they were often very unresponsive or even downright rude.
    Thanks for your reviews - very helpful. :)

      As far a I know these are more on the oily side. I am not really that knowledgeable on pencil ingredients though, so I might be wrong and just repeating what other people have said. I have, however, worked with these quite a bit, and I have never had an issue with any wax bloom, even after layering lots. To me they feel most like the pencils that I know for a fact are oil pencils, like the Polychromos for instance.
      And I have never blended them with OMS, but with Zest-it I have, and that worked just fine, so OMS should work, too. Hope that helps.

      When I do the reviews mate I only talk about that one particular product, when I do my comparison videos I talk about lots of other brands together. I feel if I do a review on a product and then start talking about other brands it can muddy the waters a little bit.
      As for the wax bloom, are you referring to the test in the black paper? Because if you are what you have to remember is that black paper is like cartridge paper, hardly any tooth and very thin, it is not really for colored pencil work I only use it to show what the pigments look like on dark paper, there was a little bit of crumbling but that was only because I used an incredibly heavy hand which I ordinarily wouldn’t do on an art piece. I only use such pressure on certain testing techniques.
      I can tell you that there is no wax bloom at all with these pencils, at least not on any of the artist grade papers that I used such as the botanical art work I completed for the review on the Clairefontaine Paint-On mixed media paper. I conducted some tests on Strathmore Bristol Velum and Smooth paper as well and there was no bloom at all on those papers.
      I am not sure what you are asking about the opacity. When I test the pencils on black paper, it is only to show potential buyers of the product what the pigments will look like if they want to use black paper, as some colored pencil artists do use. In this test some pigments are really thick and opaque and practically block out the black paper under the pigment. Other pigments on the other hand have much more opacity to them and show the black paper in the test.
      I hope I have answered your questions. One other thing. When I first started reviewing colored pencils, I fixed on whether or not the core of a pencil was wax or oil based. Every review I uploaded I would get loads of comments telling me the pencil was oil and loads telling me the same pencil was wax. I noticed that there was a lot of confusion about this and realised that when I was asking the actual companies, I was talking to sales representatives who really didn’t know either.
      So I researched this over the period of a year and I managed after a lot of work to contact the Chemists who worked for some of the big pencil companies. These are the guys who put together the ingredients in the pencils and whilst they wouldn’t ever tell me the ingredients in the pencils they all told me that this Wax / Oil thing in pencils is a myth. There are lots of different waxes and oils used alongside many other ingredients and in a lot of cases there will be wax and oil used in certain pencils, but I was told that there is no such thing as an all wax pencil or all oil pencil.

      You asked Harry and he gave you a very thorough answer, I have nothing to offer that will be nearly as comprehensive. I can just tell you that I have not experienced any wax bloom with these pencils at all. Secondly, they are not as soft as Prismas or Coloursoft, they are almost a perfect middle point between Polychromos and Prismacolors. They are a little more opaque than Polychromos. This is subjective of course, and merely my personal opinion. Harry likes to stick to the facts, which is why we trust his reviews.

It is something that needs to change in my opinion and I have spoke about it before. When you look at so call portrait pencil sets, the vast majority of them are aimed at Caucasian skin and that in my opinion needs to change.
