I love how the differences between the 2 versions really show the headspace Maynard must have been in for them. In the studio version he must have been going through the thick of it with this person he was in a relationship with -- as the song sounds desperate and feverish. And in this version, it's years after the relationship is over... And it's mournful and sad, almost as if he's looking back on it and sort of missing it to a degree.

Fantastic comment. Had the same effect on me. When the original Pushit came out, I was in a relationship like this - passionate, occasionally violent, hard to leave. The song mirrored my frustration. Years later I saw this version performed live and was stunned. Tears were shed - not only for the subject matter & my regrets, but for the sheer beauty of & resignation in Maynard's voice.

The original sounds like it's seething with rage. The calm middle part feels humid like as if they put water on a hot steel, like yeah it's cooling down but it's still hot

Spot on analysis, Drew. If you can think back to a time when you had a really full, heartfelt, sobbing cry...there is a mental, emotional, and physical tax on the body and mind. "The calm after the storm".
TooL attempts to connect you through audio cues to a deeper recess in your mind. There, you fight the controls of the Ego; the self conscious state we tend to find ourselves, and escape down dim halls within ourselves to explore spaces we tend to overlook. Or forget.
The lyrics are important, but are important the way that a hypnotists instructions lead the patient into a trance. The voice and words are only TooLs to guide you. The music provides the emotional tie-in, the particular "color" if that makes sense.
The meaning of the songs...the true meaning...are actually about you.

My good friend is a diehard Dave Matthews fan, and huge Carter fan as he is a drummer as well. He knew of Tool and heard a few songs and I had an extra ticket for the release of Parabola in NYC so he said it’s not really my jam but I’ll go. Well we went on a double date and took a limo and had some tequila and a little smoke. He was all giddy and talkative until the show. After the show he hardly said a word. After we got home and the night ended he said “What the Hell kinda journey did you take me on”? I said that was the Tool rabbit hole! He said it changed him for the better and still thanks me today, 20 years later as he starts all his drum sessions with a little 46&2.

I had the fortune to see Tool live in Columbus OH back in the early-mid 2000s. The vibe of a Tool concert is so different than something you'd get from a Nothing More or Metallica or other metal/rock bands. The atmosphere is indeed electric, but it's a more introverted electricity. You're part of the whole but still an individual - moments like screaming along to "I'LL KEEP DIGGING! TIL I FEEL SOMETHING!!!" with Stinkfist are so different than the electric feeling you get from songs like this. It's a completely different vibe. Tool concerts allow you to experience things both intimately and socially.
So glad you enjoyed this version of the song - the smiles on your face for the last quarter or so were awesome to watch. :D

Welcome aboard Drew, I think you have been folded in at this point. You understood exactly what we were telling you, great job. Your points are spot on, feeling that emotional drain- 100% accurate. You wouldn't have appreciated salival version as much without hearing the original. You could argue that now if you went back and listen to the original again, you may enjoy it more than the first time you heard it. There is video footage for pushit live, not the salival version but i think its around 1998, it may be the show you have in the opening of your videos where Maynard is in that bra and its all green/night vision looking. Maynard carries that note towards the end and its one of the most impressive things to see.

It's awesome tuning into your Tool reactions man. It's like if I were able to go back in time to see my face when I first head them. It's a really cool thing. Can never have a first listen again. Though after a while, it'll age like a fine wine. This track was an amazing experience for me when I got a hold of Salival. I heard they play this version at their shows occasionally still. I would love to see that. I could get lost in the drums alone. Tool is untouchable live. Top-notch reactioning my dude! 👌🏻
Edit: As long I'm commenting, I might as well suggest another live reaction. Tool - Sober (1993 Reading Festival). Should be called 'Tool - Sober Live (Pro Shot) REMASTERED' in the search. It's at least a strong tie with this version of Pushit for me. One of the best live performances I've seen from anyone.

I feel like this band is truly beginning to receive it’s due from the masses and it will only continue for many years after we’re all long gone...and that is exactly what it’s all about. Watching this immediately after returning from seeing them in Cincinnati, my fifth time seeing them live. You're spot on about feeling drained at the end of one of their songs because each song is so built up and you become so emotionally invested. Take that exhaustion after hearing this version of this song, imagine actually being there live to experience it, then imagine going through that process 10-13 times consecutively over the course of 90-120 minutes... That's what Tool is like live.

I think the real reason you feel tired after listening to Tool is because you get so involved and there is so much emotion, its a ride. Sometimes I feel emotional exhausted after a Tool song. They defiantly do something to you. Then again, some songs really hype me up, and some really make me think. For them to be able to make someones emotions radically change is just proof at how great the art they are creating is.

I'm glad you've listened to one of the best songs ever written, in it's best form. I went to one of the Fear Inoculum concerts, and it was incredible (of course they didn't play Pushit). I did hear Intolerance and Aenima though.

Saw TOOL perform this several times on the 2002 tour. This new arrangement left the audience speechless. As a young woman who'd been in a relationship like he's describing (one that frequently boiled over into violence) it hit me really hard in ways the original version didn't. When it was over I was ashamed to find my face wet with tears. Then I looked around and saw I was far from alone; 20K people in stunned silence. Across 35 years of seeing live shows, the 2002 performance of "Pushit" is easily top 3 most emotional/beautiful moments of all time. #TOOL

Knowing of this version since this album came out and watching your reaction to hearing it for the first time is exactly how I and I’m assuming most ppl felt even after they crushed covering No Quarter earlier in the album. Blew my mind. When that new album came out last year was one of the best days. Then hearing it took over the charts over Swift and the young’uns nit understanding and asking who is this tool band. Made me elated as fuck. Second vid I watched of yours. Dig it and glad you are getting into tool. I don’t think I cam listen to the original version anymore after that craziness. Cheers.

Listen to a live Tool song on headphones is as good as you can get ... in the basement ,but to be there is soooo different, every base kick pounds your chest, the light show makes your eyes water( always remember to blink) you literally and figuratively feel the music...I saw the in Chicago this year , you would never know these guys are pushing 60...Just a Fantastic Band all around. The 70s had Floyd , we have Tool.

Salival dropped about 2 months before I first saw them live. The live Push It track was my instant favorite at the time. When they played this (for me haha) in Phoenix in 2004 it was as good as this version. Maynard's voice resonated and even replaced the open air that night. I glanced around at one point and saw a couple peole with tears and most with their eyes closed. Greatest song I have ever heard live by anyone and that includes my 6 other Tool shows.

2022 is almost upon us and I can remember back when this was released and I was heavy in my abuse of alcohol. This was the only album I could listen to and play while I struggled with DT's, the shakes, tremors, hallucinations etc...it's a very terrible state to be in. Tool has literally gotten me through my worst of times and I can say without hesitation that to me Tool is the GOAT when it comes to music.
In my darkest days Tool was the light for me, even if I didn't clearly understand the full meanings their songs back then (90's), almost 13 years Sober I can't reiterate the relevance of their impact and Passion to keep living, to keep pushing and to get thru to the other side. It makes me smile inside to see others reactions to their songs...for me it was and always will be a huge part of my journey and who I've become.
I'm sure I'm not the only one that feels this way...Thanks Maynard, Danny, Justin and Adam, we are all blessed to be a part of your Epic Journey 🤘🏾
And to those out there that are struggling, believe me, it's worth it, have a reason to change and make it happen, take some Tool with ya, it helped me tremendously 🙏🏾
