    In this video we're taking a look at the DaVinci Resolve depth map effect vs the magic mask and how they compare when used for color grading purposes. Quite a long video about something that I was interested in.

    Yesss Depth map is so powerful. In the discord we are playing around with the power of depth map + bloom and raising the darks to make a sudo-smoke effect vs a mist filter.
    Basically it comes down to DMap -> overall realism selection in the entire frame vs MMask -> a localized selection.
    Nice dude.

      Thanks! Yeah there are more and more applications for both the depth man and magic mask that I'm messing around just purely for fun and some of them might actually turn out to be very useful if enough time is spent refining the selection either one gives you 😁

    Oke clear to me, better setting in magic mask will take some time extra, result of magic mask itself is better, but for comperising with dephtmap what you did is good enough and save time indeed.

    Overall it's clear, one question : you use better for depthmap and faster for magic mask, why not better to for magic mask as well , should give better results on masking it self .

    • @georgekamenov_
      @georgekamenov_  Před 7 měsíci

      Fair question. Should have probably mentioned this in the video itself but I had tested both effects with each of the clips before recording and I knew that for these specific cases better vs faster for the magic mask gave me negligible differences but took longer to track through the clip when set to better. So I just wanted to save myself some time. But you are right, often setting it to better will be the right call. Just a bit of a mistake on my part in this one 😅

      If you right click on one of your clips in the color page under the preview, you can go to local versions and add new. Then you can load different versions to see changes or just have backups of color grades you like and might want to go back to.

    can you mix depth map and relight?

    • @georgekamenov_
      @georgekamenov_  Před 7 měsíci

      Yeah, definitely! It's actually one of the best use cases for it in my opinion. But your performance will take a hit so it's best to use it on shorter clips

    why better quality is not selected for Magic Mask ? in all Comparisons !! Any Reasons ?

    • @georgekamenov_
      @georgekamenov_  Před 5 měsíci

      Because in testing better vs faster for the specific examples I found that it didn't help much and only made things run slower so it made no sense to have it on. Although I probably should have mentioned that in the video itself

    Can this be used if i wanted to mask multiple people in a clip?

    • @georgekamenov_
      @georgekamenov_  Před 6 měsíci +1

      If they're roughly at the same depth in the image it should work fairly easily. Otherwise you can use the refinement sliders to specify the parts you want it to affect. So yeah, you can but it takes a bit more setup than with just one subject

    The halo around your body was caused by you blurring the Magic Mask results. You could have used the minus eyedropper to reduce the edge on the left side of your head. But, you didn't even try. I would be more convinced if you at least attempted to remove the excess edge, thereby reducing the need to blur the edge as much as you did. You blurred it quite heavily to be fair. Personally, I would use the Magic Mask as it is intended, to separate people/objects from the background. The Depth Map definitely has more color grading uses for sure.
    When using the Magic Mask you seem to want to blur it heavily in each of your examples. Why? I've seen SO many examples where the Magic Mask does a fantastic job at separating subjects from the background. When you blur the results as heavily as you do, you defeat the purpose of the tool itself.

    • @georgekamenov_
      @georgekamenov_  Před 7 měsíci

      I know the halo is from the blur. Didn't use the minus eyedropper because prior to recording this video I had tested each clip with both effects and the minus eyedropper only introduced extra issues with taking away stuff I wanted to keep. So I wanted to save time in an already long video. Reason I keep blurring it so much is because I don't actually want it to be a hard line selection on the subject. I want there to be a gradient of how much the effect shows up on the subject. I know the magic mask does a good job of separating subjects from the background but the point was exactly that you can use the Depth Map for more than just that. Which is why the examples I gave were of color grading scenarios and not background removal or just subject extraction.

      To be fair you'd have to stick around for way less time to see it happen considering the first example is very early on in the video.

    Is it only my PC goes sluggish when Depth Map is applied? Relight just buries it altogether. Using 2080 8GB, 92GB DDR4 RAM, 5950X

    • @georgekamenov_
      @georgekamenov_  Před 7 měsíci +1

      Nah I'm pretty sure it tanks performance for everyone. I'd say it's best to try using it on shorter clips rather than fully relying on it for an entire interview for example
