Personally I don't understand the Swedish government as they're saying "we need to be treated equally" and all that jazz, basically feel insulted by Finland for keeping the boarder nearly completely closed. They've handled this situation very poorly and there's tens of thousands of infections, isn't it more than obvious to deny free travel to a country with very few cases compared to them? Sweden is a great, important country, part of our "northern family", but seriously getting offended by the boarder policy in this case is absolutely absurd.
When swedens craze for "eqwality" goes beyond all reasonable thinking.
Their country is still in a pandemic, theyve got only themselves to balme for that for extremely poor actions (basically none at all) to get rid of it.
They let their people die like flies, they clearly wouldnt give a damn if they restart the spreading in Finland again.
Who the hell would open their borders to a country in that state.
If your roommates do all their homework and chores so they are done quicker and can go out party, dont be sitting there saying its unfair that you cant join because youve just been sitting doing nothing the whole time.
@@SportSoulLife Are we really crazing that much? Why would we go to other countries when more things here are open than in our neighbouring countries? It's really interesting how you say that our government let us die like flies, yet a lot of other European countries have had a lot of more deaths. You're making it sound like our whole country is falling apart which it's not lmao.
@@torstenlandsson9757 I think its falling your coverment is trash and im not meaning corona virus
Torsten Landsson Youve got more deaths per capita than the US, that tells a lot...
Also arleast in Finland everything has been open as normal for about a month now, only spacing is still recommended (and wildely practiced). For every person that dies to covid in Finland, 16.5 persons die in Sweden. When adjusted to population its still 8 times as many deaths.
Im not saying the country is falling apart, im saying that people in sweden are dying at a MUCH higher rate than the MAJORITY of countries in the world.
As long as the government doesnt do anything about it, or covid 19 stops by itself, other nordic countries wont want to have anything to do with your high rate of diseased population.
Sure you may not care about getting sick to corona, but the other nordic countries have gone a completely oppisite direction and dont want to jeopardize their plans and advances so your feelings dont get hurt.
Torsten Landsson Also, once you get corona in sweden, you are TWICE as likely to die to it compared to the US.
THAT tells me that your government doesnt care one bit about it.
It's like corona doesn't even exist here in Finland right now. Though it does, I've been social distancing ever since I was born, so my introvert ass was well-prepared already.

even our defence forces fought against corona 😂 they said that we'll use the same tactics we used in winter war and we'll kick the corona outta here 😂
Outside of Uusi-maa region the outbreak didn't really change anything. For example here in Kymenlaakso county out of 170 000 people we have had 41 infections and 0 deaths.
I never prepped, just bougth 3 cans of pea soup, I don't know anyone who prepped or anything. We just lived our lives like we do normally and limited the time outside to the minimum.
All grocerie stores has been open during the outbreak and at least what I've seen, there was no greater abundances of toilet paper or any other goods, everything stayed kinda the same.
I think that one aspect that has been helping Finland in this situation has been the widespread introverted life-style and the fact that social distancing is something we do culturally anyways.
Most of our victims were elderly whom mindset has been "If I die, I die" and those elders have been the group we younger generations have been yelling since the start to go back inside. If they did, we could have gone trough this epidemic with almost no deaths and rest of the services would have been opened weeks if not months earlier.
All of our bigger public spaces or apartment buildings have bomb shelters build in them. It is mandatory. Basically we should have short-term bomb sheltering capacity for every single Finnish person. Our government facilities, workplaces and schools also have regular evacuation rehearsals and all the workers need to know where the shelters are in their building just as well as where the closest fire hoses or other rescue and safety equipment are. They also test the public alarms regularly, at least here in Helsinki, you can hear the general public alarm sirens go off as a rehearsal in some places at a certain time. Those are the ones that when they are sounded all over the place, you need to get down into the shelters. And we haven't had a contact war on our soil in decades!

The summer here started with especially warm and dry weather, which the virus doesn't like at all. It came here late so we had time to learn from others what's going on. Also while the video was from our capital city, lot of people live in smaller towns or country in natural isolation. It's not in our habits to hug and kiss strangers like in some cultures and the level of hygiene is rather high.
It's spread just fine in dry and warm places elsewhere. It's our culture of increased personal space along with our preparedness and relatively swift action that kept the situation under control. Definitely true that we got more warning but i think we would've simply clamped down faster too.
Taiwan has been doing everything right from the get go and afaik they didn't even have to shut anything down. Clearly effective action goes a long way.

It must be the traditional Swedish "Folkhemmet" (People's home) style policy that has and still is causing so many corona deaths. The basic rights of every person seem to be so over-important in Sweden that it's very difficult for politicians to restrict them. And even if they could they wouldn't have the courage to do so. Fundamental rights and freedom transcend everything. Traditionally you have to arrange meetings, discussions and votings on many levels about every little thing in the Swedish society. Nobody dares to take the charge and simply tell what others should do, at least no politician. It has been the Swedish way for decades. And now they have allowed so many citizens to die and pretend that it has been the right way to go.
I remember how my Finnish friend told me many years ago how he was working in Sweden in a company and they had these meetings all the time about everything. The Swedes just discussed and discussed and finally he started to feel frustrated and took charge and said: "This is how we do it." From that on in meetings they always turned to this Finnish guy and expected him to say the final word. Sweden and Finland are very much alike. After all they were the same country for over 600 years. But there's something different in the way people think. Finns are more direct and more ready to make fast and difficult decisions. Perhaps it's the mentality or the sufferings in the last wars or something.
One thing also is that apparently (I read article on this at some point during the spring) Sweden lacks similar emergency powers act as that which Finland invoked, or at least theirs can only be used in a state of war.
@@riku3716 yeah Finland is better prepared for things like this. Since Soviet fell Sweden hasnt really had huge emergency plans, many of the bombshelters are rotting away etc. But now the right has pushed through alot more military spending (that includes more money to MSB who handles all emergencies etc)
And another silly thing i read is that it's written in Swedish law that you cannot force people to be home, only exception is war. So the goverment said that it wouldnt be possible to have a forced lockdown during Corona even if they wanted it.
Finns have "Kotirauha laki" and "Joka miehen oikeus": "home privacy law" and "every man's rights" and that didn't stop putting these restrictions. For me that policy sounds like an _excuse_ ESPECIALLY now when there has lately been blasting news articles going on how some swedes "decided to go on a vacation and 'take a break' from following safety protocols", sweden article going "Finland, the land of the _Adult SWEDES",_ then the recent sueing of discrimination of finno-swedes families. ALSO the _recent_ mocking of MERE _two days ago_ when swedens mocked finland with the old phrase from the WAR TIME: "Finlands industri är vår” and for those who don't know swedish that is "Finnish industries are ours". Then lets also count in the fact that until Sweden got the other minorities which caused the finno-swedes to be the bigger minorities they were _finally considered "swedish enough"_
Here is a _finnish opinion for ya,_ Sweden and Finland are _NOTHING alike._
After all if we were there wouldn't have been an incident of grave robbing to "scientifically proof finns as inferior" OH! speaking of that, it's been around 147 years now, _when is Sweden going to give the skulls back that they are rn storing at some random university's storage room in a cardboard box?_

@@zoom5024 Sorry got slightly heated with the sentence: _"Perhaps_ it's the mentality or the sufferings in the last wars _or something"_
The war phrase already is insulting to hear to be used. Especially when considering our history. It's not exactly just isolation that this vid goes on about, we literally cannot trust our neighbours because of the pure shitty history between us.
Let me make one thing clear for people who might have gotten wrong ideas from my previous comment: We don't hate swedes (unless certain specific ones are racist towards us), _We just loath their country_

I'll watch the rest of your video but I don't think that Sweden and Finland are good candidates for comparison... They followed opposite policy frameworks altogether. And we'll only know the superior policy once both countries can say that the covid situation is behind them.
Edit: That said, what an amazing country!
No new infections have been reported in weeks.
@@Celatra Yes, and in my opinion coming from the US, Finland's done an outstanding job. But my question is if a low antibody count will make the Fins more vulnerable when deciding to reopen its borders in the long-run, because they'll essentially have to wait until a vaccine can guarantee that open borders are possible without leading to an outbreak. Their population has far lower immunity to the virus than Sweden's population, so if they act before it's absolutely safe to do so (which could be several years), the virus could still end up slipping through and ravaging the country.
Now, that view of mine is definitely influenced by being an American, where our main institutions in some ways resemble the Finnish approach (Democrat) & the Swedish approach (Republican) - the latter being more focused on stimulating economic performance since normal people don't automatically have their basic needs met by the government. So if the Fins feel that they're being provided for by the government and they're comfortable being in lockdown until a vaccine is developed in 1-3 years, then Finland has a good policy for the Finnish.
On the other hand, if Sweden's policy bet pays off, then they may go through hell this year, but their lives will probably resume to reasonable normalcy much sooner than in Finland.
So the Fins are doing well now but will probably be more vulnerable when reopening down the road, and the Swedes may be in hell right now but their approach may ultimately be the stronger play in the long run.
@@tchaffman As a Finn I definitely think it'd be better to be in a long lockdown and avoid as many deaths as possible rather than (to put it really bluntly) "sacrifice" thousands of lives for the ones who survive. Especially since even the WHO says there's not enough evidence to say if getting sick once prevents you from getting sick again or spreading the virus to others.
But as the country is already starting to open and more travelling and general socializing is allowed guess we'll soon see if the second wave'll get us despite the preparedness.
@@tchaffman the studies show, that even in the Sweden's most densely populated capital area of Stockholm, only 7,3% of the population had gotten the immunity. While, for the herd immunity to be efficient, 60-70% of the population should be able to get it. So, it really does not sound great news for their plan.

As a Swede, watching my own country handle this situation has been rather embarrasing. It's not only the politicians. The politicians and our ministry of health gave sound recommendations but in certain areas of Sweden they fell on deaf ears. No, where our politicians failed is in their fumbling accusations against our neighbors, claiming that _they_ are ruining the Nordic cooperation even though Denmark, Norway and Finland were pretty much on the same page since day one whereas Sweden took a completely different approach. The Swedish citizens failed in not recognizing the threat this pandemic posed. Hopefully we'll learn from this and hopefully we can mimic the success of Finland for the next pandemic, whatever it might be.
There are a lot of misconceptions floating about the internet regarding Sweden, though. A lot of it written by people who have never set a foot in this country. That's just the nature of the internet. Whether we've been treated "unfairly" because of it, I don't know. I certainly don't blame our nearest neighbors for approaching Sweden with caution.
No they didn't give sound recommendations. Anders Tegnell has basically been consistently wrong throughout this pandemic. He has constantly had to backtrack and change policies.

No small part of the credit for Finland´s swift and apt reaction to the Corona must go to the former and present Minister of Justice Anna-Maja Henriksson who oversaw the "preparedness" legislation during her first stint as Minister of Justice, and took part in executing them now that the Corona crises struck. Good work.

I'd say they did it pretty well but could've been a little faster. Coronavirus has not affected my life in any way.

@3:00 Nokia Tune of course, what else
I was so excited to go to beautiful Finland this summer too. Thanks corona for ruining everyone’s plans.
That being said, Finland gives us the perfect model of what every country would have been like had they actually taken the virus seriously.
@@astrobees Hope you can come here next summer then. I was in Lapland last week and it looks like people are not social distancing anymore because the trains we're packed!

Good thing we didn't have an idiotic conservative government which would have prioritized the economy over the lives of our people.
We have already returned to living pretty much normally, after all.
Sweden's conservative?
No, I was comparing Finland to the US and UK to a lesser extent. The UK didn't even know what strategy to use for a while, after all.
Lacking government power for a quarantine can be detrimental for the people in the case of a pandemic.
@@aarohalme1020 my country has a conservative government and we implemented lockdown. But we're also poor so I think people still died because of said lockdown. But, yeah, I think that countries like the uk that could afford the economic pause should definitely try flattening the curve first. I don't understand why richer countries like sweden didn't really try.. even until now
@@chew7656 Yeah, maybe yours did but conservatives typically care more about the economy than the people as seen in the US and UK especially.
Sweden's government lacked power to enforce a lockdown which was clearly detrimental.
@@aarohalme1020 thats just stupid, economy is very important to keep going as safely as possible. Have you any idea what could happen if most small business went under. Thankfully our country did well
Except Finland was not prepared at all. We have quite low numbers becouse the government made some good decisions to make tight restrictions in start, but there was lot of mess and even scandals with preparation, protective equipment etc. As a finnish i find it bit funny to call Finland a greatest example from europe. If you had to pick 1, it would be Iceland or Estonia. But yes, at least we did better than sweden so far.
You're not the first one to tell me that. Thanks for pointing it out.
Nonetheless, I had no idea about the underground tunnels under Helsinki, so it was still interesting to learn about that. :)
@@MatrixCL Yeah I mean finland has done relatively well when look at the numbers, but the preparation was actually really bad, we wasnt ready at all when the virus came. Right before the virus landed in finland our authorities said "risk of it coming finland is really small, and no need to do anything". Next few days we had already many cases. At start our authorities wanted also to follow identically sweden path and didnt even put passengers from epidemic centers to quarantine, but after lot of pressure the government decided to go for tighter restrictions. Then we had mask and protective gear scandals, first our emergency protective gear stock was old and expired therefore non-usable. Then they bought new masks from shady businessman for 10million, and those masks failed every tests, and therefore was also un-usable.
I would say that it was always more or less under control from the start. Everybody was at least together in this and not like in the U.S where people are starting to oppose the goverment in a situatuion like this. SDP made good and rational decisions (for once) and people followed the restrictions very well.
So true this video is dumb. Kirjoitin samanlaisen kommentin itekki :D
Well we already knew what social distancing was. But let's not talk about social distancing in saunas

Most of the Eastern European countries didn't even get many infections... I think they were much luckier than Finland. Same with Iceland.
