Honor Magic 5 Pro Review: Polished and Powerful, But Is It Enough?

- The Honor Magic 5 Pro is a great all rounder smartphone with a main camera that has a large sensor and a fast f/1.6 aperture. I also am a fan of its real 3D face scanning system for face unlock, and the slightly wider display. However, the phone is quite pricey in Europe, and the competition is tough.
GUYS I'M SORRY I just realized you can set an app tray. It's buried deep but it's there. But my gripe about swiping down for notification still stands.

The worry is rather , how comes you didn't notice any of the shortcoming on Vivo X90 Pro+. Honor has very logical settings stucture - vs the mess at Vivo. Honor is realiable vs missing loads of notifications on Vivo even after removing vivo.pem, even without the dark mode that kills notifications on Vivo and plenty other bugs in their software. Xiaomi also has rather buggy software while for Honor you just install another launcher and the software just plain works which cannot be said of any BBK (Oppo/Vivo worse than Oneplus) or Xiaomi phone. Honor has pretty good updates while the Vivo X90 Pro+ is still stuck on december security patch and has absoutely no update warranty on the Chinese version (and in the past flagships got 1, maximum 2 android major version upgrades at Vivo, and Oppo similar problems). No Vivo China OS phone ever got more than 2 android major version upgrades and security updates right from the start trickle in at 3 months pace....
Honor/Huawei have some learning curve - but their OS is rock solid but at least they can be fully removed without loosing functions. Remove Vivo appstore and that phone loses loads of function on it's next software upgrade to force you to reinstall the store. Vivo appstore tries to replace any app that it is inside it's own store if you install it for example via google play or other stores - so they can maximise their revenue on advertisement (e.g. wechat from Vivo is horribly ad infected vs wechat from playstore or apkpure). And so on. Yeah Vivo at first view looks great on the software - but the more you use it the worse. Xiaomi is similar.

That is great news I hope Honor will do it. Because on Huawei mate 20 you have the fingerprint at the back so you can swap it down. Notification. But need to get with it 2023 👍🏽

I'm glad i bought this over samsung galaxy s23+ and saved $300+. After testing both camera side by sides, for a good hour in the showroom. I can safely confirm that honor magic5 pro has better camera than galaxy s23+/ultra. Dynamic range is far better on the honor, lighting is way better on the honor, theres more details and sharpness but not too over sharpened on the honor. Even video is better on the honor. Has better colors and lighting and details. Of course, the only thing that s23 ultra won over the honor is the 100x zoom. But who the fook took photos on a 100x zoom anyway? Overall, honor magic 5 pro camera > galaxy s23+/ultra.
So i picked up this phone a few days ago and i couldn't be happier. Super snappy, 2848x1312 screen resolution, 512gb storage and 12gb ram, 8 gen 2, and most importantly, it already has a preinstalled screen protector and a freaking charger and charging cable in the box! While you have to buy that separately on the samsung. And for all of that, is $300 cheaper than the s23+! Such a bargain tbh.
I don't think this is overpriced in Europe. It's 200€ cheaper than the comparable Samsung or Xiaomi while offering a better memory/storage configuration. I also think this one is a more complete product than the Xiaomi 13 Pro as the Xiaomi still has a USB 2, no 4k selfie and no ultrasonic fingerprint scanner
And eye protector screen, my eyes Will looove this smartphone, i m waiting for mine to arrive, i cant have a Samsung because of the agressive screen they have.

I don't think that Honor Magic 5 Pro has an ultrasonic fingerprint scanner (under display) I think, but still fast enough

Nice review. The thing that sells me most is the large width of the screen. Drives me nuts how most flagships are long but narrow. Gonna wait for the Find X6 pro and make a decision then.
Awesome review! I own the Honor Magic 4 Pro and overall I am very happy with it, apart from the battery life. Glad to see that Honor is expanding the battery in the Magic 5 Pro. However, there is a downgrade on the battery charging speed, as the Magic 4 Pro supports up to 100W wireless charging which is, I can confirm, an awesome feature!
Why battery life bro? May i ask. Is the battery life just average for magic 4 pro?
@@NSHazq Yes, the battery of the Magic 4 Pro is 4600 mah which is not that much. You get a full day with it but nothing more. Luckily the 100W charging does a great job and you can top it within 30 mins from 0 to 100%

X70 pro battery also just average. By 5pm. I usually left 30-40%

UI and Software are the biggest letdowns in Chinese phones and that's the reason why I'll never switch. Samsung and Google Pixels are best for me. iOS also isn't my cup of tea!

I understand the 512GB/12GB will be £1100 in the UK with a £100 early bird discount. So that is £400 less than the current S23U price (£250 less than Samsung pre-order). The Euro price is E1199 for the 12GB. That looks pretty fair and not unreasonable. It would be best to consider the included charger, case and screen protector the S23U does not have. There is also a pre-order gift (unknown ATM).
So value it outshines the S23U, and although not as low as the Pixel 7 Pro, that was £850 in the UK on release, so the difference when you take in the discount and the full package is a lot closer. Obviously, consumers are spoilt for choice this year now that Samsung Fabs no longer lumber us with second-rate chipsets. Huawei, OPPO, Xiaomi and Honor are all releasing this month, so if you are outside the US, choices, choices...
Yeah I'm waiting to see what Oppo has to offer with the upcoming Find X6 series.
In value yeah it's way better then s23u. Also it's cheaper them Xiaomi 13pro with double the storage. Same goes with pixel. the lowest price was for 128gb storage 256 around 1k€. Wouldn't call it a cheaper option honestly
£949 in the UK with a potential of having £80 voucher and with £500 of extras thrown in if pre ordered.
5 months later it's on sale for £765 on Honor's website (and £688 with student discount), absolute bargain
Ben, thanks for the review. However, I'm not sure about it not having an app drawer. For the previous version, i.e. Magic 4, you can enable the app drawer from the settings. I could be wrong... but I would assume that this Magic 5 Pro would have the same function. Also, the Magic 5 Pro has some camera AI tricks that work very well with certain scenarios. If you take those into consideration, when it comes to daily use, it may add a few more points to it than s23 or the 13 pro. To me, as good as s23 and 13 pro are, I'm actually more interested in the magic 5 pro because of these camera AI tricks. If I were to spend money buying 1 of the 3, I would buy the magic 5 pro over the other 2. Thanks again!
the 13 pro is just not that good . poor battery life and display compared to the magic 5 pro or 23 ultra . the cameras are also inferior according to dxomark . xiaomi will never be able to compete with the other brands in the premium market.
@@mister_9208 Ive used Xiaomi phones in the past and I know that the SOC for the 13 Pro will offer good battery life. As for the camera, it's all subjective on how you like your image and the processing it does. Xiaomi's Leica partnership produces some really good work and tends to have a unique look overall as I have used the 12s Ultra for shooting and will likely get the 13 Pro as well. I wouldn't put too much faith into DXOmarks scoring system. Ben has been shooting an obscene amount with the 13 pro on his IG and it's good stuff, very good stuff.

Heya, so I'm not Ben but I'm a colleague of his at XDA! I know for sure at the time of filming the Magic 5 Pro didn't have an app drawer, as I was at MWC and tested out this device as well and noted the same. It'll probably come in a software update though because as you said, previous devices had it.

I dig this phone but my bias is always hole punch and ultimately UDC. Although the pill is functional it doesn't look quite as right in my opinion. I think the Galaxy S10 Plus hss the cleanest pill cut out as I've never seen other brands make the pill quite as elegant. But this pill does have a 3D face scan unlike the S10+.
It's a solid phone though. Nothing wrong with that. This is as close to a Huawei phone as it gets.
That front display reminds me of huawei p40 pro plus
I'm not gonna lie, I like the design of the 5 Pro, and I'm happy they're finally back in the smartphone game. I do think some software tweaks are gonna be needed.

The option for an app drawer is in the homescreen and wallpaper settings in the Honor magic 4 pro and it's been present for many generations in honor phones.
They have not removed it.
Ben, I'm curious, having switched to the S23 Ultra recently, I don't know how I lived with the Huawei/Honor style of 'swipe down for system search' for the last 4 years with my mate 20 pro. Would you say that for you is a legitimate day-to-day deal breaker? I think I would say now having swipe down for notifications, I could never go back to not having it again, especially on a larger phone.

It's not a total deal breaker but it's annoying. I've been venting about this for years. Before only Samsung and OnePlus offered us that. Xiaomi Oppo vivo all used to be like honor/Huawei too. But now everyone offers except honor and Huawei
Hello Ben, if you can make a comparison with Honor magic 4 pro it's a big gap between cameras? Because I have the magic beta 7 on my Honor magic 4 pro and the camera have improved so much! And what about the battery because one thing that magic 4 pro is bad is the battery!

honor magic5 price in china is perfect 3999RMB or 570$ but international price is ouch!!! in china, nubia z50 ultra is really the only competitor & i really like to see neck-and-neck comparison between these two in camera,batterylife,sustained performance&temps. from reviews i found in chinese, it seems nubia is really a proper flagship without wireless charging but enough with 30-35min 80W. it has only 8 apps that can't be uninstalled. more importantly it's much more good looking camera array than honor magic5 even with case on it.
Everytime Ben swings near the camera, i can hear his voice louder. But then I remember his mic is on him so it shouldn't be louder 😂

Good phones like honor magic 5 pro & xiaomi 13 pro & vivo x90 pro but are price to high. Because if someone Gunner pay all that money out they will just go for a Samsung or iPhone or save money go for oneplus 11 & Google pixel 7 Pro and especially with this day and age cost of living crisis
In China the honor magic 5 pro is a lot cheaper BUT I heard that you can't install Google play services (like on Huawei phones)!
For me (having a p40pro actually) it's a absolute no go anymore.
Yes, i think so, i tried chinese model in the HONOR store, Google framework is not installed, but other brands have framework installed at least, so that installing play store is a like a simple one for Xiaomi, Vivo, even Samsung in China

If nothing else that is a really good looking phone man. I’m a fan of the glossy finish. I know a lot of people don’t like glossy finishes because of fingerprints but I still like it. I kinda miss the days when iPhones were glossy on the back. (Well I know the regular iPhones are still glossy but I mean the Pro models which are only glossy on the sides)

This Honor is really very good, even if I think that the pill 💊 should have been centered, but especially 2-3 mm higher so as not to crop in the images when watching video.
Seeing this Honor, I have the impression that Huawei has finally admitted that the Huawei brand without the GMS internationally was dead, and that they should put Honor forward (I don't believe in the fable that Honor is independent from Huawei, it's just an administrative set-up to circumvent US sanctions).
This Honor is at the hardware level what the S23 Plus should have been, minus the curved screen and pill, and if Honor handles itself well and delivers on its software tracking promises, it will be a big thorn in the side of Samsung, Xiaomi, Oppo, and OnePlus, and could spearhead Honor's (Huawei) revival internationally.
Ps: on the other hand, there is no way that I use a smartphone without an app drawer, and especially one that does not allow me to access the notification center by sliding down on the main screen, if I want an iPhone, I buy one 🤷🏽♂️
you can use app drawer, just need to enable in settings. By default, it is disabled.

Great content man. You should also talk about the bad update policy Honor has and that this 1200€ phone only will offer 2 years of OS updates and 3 years of security updates. This shows that Honor is not supporting and beliving in it's flagship product ... For me that is extremely important specialy id you're a company that doesn't offer trades to buy a new phone.

2 annoying things about Honor: 1) slow updates; 2) 3.5x optical zoom and not 10x as it's the case with Sammy, as soon as you zoom in, the photo quality it's starting to decrease and it's really a bad thing.
There were so many good reviews on this phone and the price just dropped to 799€ that I got one. Pure disappointment, gave it back after a week. A lot of apps constantly froze, incl the keyboard, and the vamera quality was very mediocre, either too light or too grainy or both .. too bad :( had high hopes

Nonene mentions that Honor is like samsung or one plus . Its gives you security patches fast . Compared to xiaomi or other brands that forget the phones as soon as the hype goes away and then no updates at all .

The pill shape cutout is a little bit outdated. It's like going back to galaxy S10+ from 4 years ago. If it's like iPhone, not having a fingerprint sensor, then yes it makes sense but it already have an ultrasonic fingerprint sensor. The bigger display cutout seem unnecessary.

Do you know if the ones you purchase in China can sideload google play? I have an old Honor from 2019 (Purchased in Beijing), and my wife has one from 2021 (Also purchased in Beijing). They can both sideload Google Play. I'm thinking about buying this one in Beijing, and I've heard mixed things from the sellers here about Google Play.
Because of the app drawer problem and swipe down goes to keyboard, I would definitely need to install a launcher like Nova launcher.

I think the software is too janky. Like carl pei says the stock android is fine enough. I think honor focuses too much on the camera to hype their phones but the whole experience needs to be perfect for the price r
