1962 ഒക്ടോബറിൽ, ഇന്ത്യ-ചൈന യുദ്ധകാലത്ത് പ്രധാനമന്ത്രി ലാൽ ബഹദൂർ ശാസ്ത്രി ഹൈദരാബാദ് സന്ദർശിക്കുകയും ഇന്ത്യ-ചൈനീസ് ഏറ്റുമുട്ടലുകളുടെ പശ്ചാത്തലത്തിൽ രൂപീകരിച്ച ദേശീയ പ്രതിരോധ നിധിയിലേക്ക് സംഭാവന നൽകാൻ നിസാമിനോട് അഭ്യർത്ഥിക്കുകയും ചെയ്തു. ഇതിന് മറുപടിയായി നിസാം 5000 കിലോ സ്വർണം ഇന്ത്യൻ സൈന്യത്തിന് നൽകി. ഇന്നത്തെ മൂല്യത്തിൽ ഇത് 3700 കോടി രൂപയ്ക്ക് തുല്യമാണ്.
