Minnesota Orchestra's Principal Tuba Steve Campbell demonstrates the different parts of the tuba and shows us how to make sound on the instrument. www.minnesotaorchestra.org
Its feb 2023 i started this school year with band (august) and I can play the part that he did from imperial march, don’t know if thats regular or below 😅
I can’t stop smiling every time I see or hear a tuba. There’s just something unique about the instrument. Same with the baritone sax, or a bass clarinet. I love the low instruments in an orchestra.
It's about playing very aggressively without using tension. Most tubists struggle with 'filling out the horn' so to speak because they either have a very low energy, languid style of playing or they tense up with anxiety when they play. If you can stay very calm, both physically and mentally, and still manage to move a lot of air, then you suddenly find you have the freedom to make whatever sound you want, smooth or sharp.
My 2 1/2 year-old son has been watching this video (along with the others about additional instruments that the Minnesota Orchestra has made) every morning while he eats breakfast for the past month or so. He LOVES the tuba because of this and now he can explain to people how the instrument is played. Thank you for making this video!
Thank for this video-- great one to show my elementary music students who think tuba just "fart". This gives them the real mechanics along with some beautiful tunes.
Great tone!!!! That’s one big brass instrument!!! I play trombone, & played Sousaphone one summer. I have great respect for the tuba guys, takes a lot of air power!!
I respect the low brass because it takes lots of air Trombone baritone/euphonium/tuba especially bone cause they hold it up. And low brass kinda creates that sound that the band latches on too even trumpet horn and bassoon bass clarinet and bari sax are anchored by the low brass
Save up some Money, You’ll be able to get it, but think if it’s something you’ll wanna play, because you can go to music and arts if where you live has one around it.
I played tuba from grade 6 all the way to symphonic band at the end of highschool. Nice to watch, brings back memories of travelling around the world playing in a band.
I love the Candide in the outro . I’m a teenage brass player and that was the piece that got me started and I’ve played it it 3 orchestral groups that I’ve been in 🎵🎵🎼🎶
When I was very little, I listened MANY times to the Columbia recording that had "Tubby the Tuba" (Victor Jory), "Peter and the Wolf" (Basil Rathbone), and Pan the Piper (Ted Tiller). But I was never all that interested in the Tuba. My own progression of instruments over the years was strange: Piano, Clarinet, Bassoon, Horn, Trumpet. And then sometime in the middle of my life I saw a Canadian Brass concert live with Chuck Daellenbach on tuba. It didn't make me want to take up the tuba. But I sure started paying more attention to it.
Love the demonstrations, my dad was a band director as well! I grew up listening to the MN Orchestra and studied with many of the Horn players back in the '80's while at the U of MN. As a band director, I am always looking you tube videos to share with my students and would love to see more of these demonstrations for all of the instruments!
Thanks, Jeffery! We're working on it :) We have 5 videos ready at minnesotaorchestra.org/guide. Thank you for sharing the joy of music with your students!
Thank you so much for these videos! My two year old son is obsessed with instruments and music and wants to learn what each one is called and how they sound. I so appreciate having these videos to show him. They’re simple enough for a child, but not dumbed down or childish. Thank you very much for inspiring us!
I played the Tuba in elementary school and middle school. Even made it to honors band and boy choir and had no clue how to read sheet music the way most people do. I could never memorize the names of the notes but I knew how to play the notes according to where they were at on the scale, then I'd memorize the song and just not use the sheet music. 😂 I did that with math to. I had my own ways of getting to the right answer and had no idea how to do things the way everyone else was taught. I probably would've graduated school had they let me teach myself. I'm like semi autistic or something I've just never been diagnosed because I nor my parents never seen it as a problem. I can figure out the answers I just have my own ways of doing it that are faster and more effective for me.
I love the higher notes of the tuba. It's so beautiful. I also am gonna start tuba for concert Band. I play alto sax and euphonium. My director asked the euphoniums if anyone wants to play tuba cuz we don't have any this year lol so I said sure I'll Try it. I tried it and my tone is terrible and my breathing is awful. Can't sustain a note for more then 5 seconds. But I'm willing to work at it.
Learned something new today! I don't play any kind of instrument. I was just curious how to play a tuba. I thought you just blow too. I'm 60, so I just learned something new. I even showed my 88 yr old mother.
Thanks, Steve. Here in 2022, trying to figure out if my tuba sample is lame. It is. Makes me wonder if they found some dev to rent instruments, and figure out how to make a few sounds and recorded that.
Greater demonstration Mr. Campbell. Could you tell me the make and model of your instrument and is it equivalent to a six quarter horn? Thanks in advance.
I’ve never bought a tuba in my life, and I alternate between 3 separate tubas for the type of playing I’ll do. It’s crazy what a school will do for one of their only tubas
Ahh for most the tuba requires a double lip buzz - smaller brass instruments normally just buzz the upper lip. Tuba also requires an immense volume of air. Playing mine was a great warm up for me because it got the blood and lungs flowing.
Alex Madsen What do you make of the wedge shaped mouthpieces? Are they hype/marketing/Gimmick? Or worth a look? I am currently using a J. Marcinkiewicz N-1 (used it in college). I recently started playing again after not playing for 25 years.
nope nope nope............just no. while not a gimmick, a lot of players after a couple of years felt muscle degradation. for your own safety I would advise not to
I always think/want to say "theyre so BIG", but I'm a piano player before anything else, so I remember that and I'm like "oh wait I could fit multiple safari animals inside my instrument at once". Love the tuba, though. So _DEEP_
There is an Eb and F Tuba I believe. But do you write out the part in bass clef and at concert pitch, and the player applies the appropriate level of transposition? Or is the part written in its own key?
In general, tuba music is written in bass clef and the player needs to play the appropriate fingerings based on what key of instrument they play. There are F, Eb, CC, and BBb tubas. There are exceptions to the bass clef rule, a notable one being British Style Brass Bands where it is common to Have Eb and BBb tubas written in Eb and Bb treble clef respectively.
B&S is the brand (from Germany). The model is called MRP, which stands for Mr. Perantoni. Tubist Daniel Perantoni, who teaches at Indiana University, helped design this particular model. It is pitched in the key of C, one step higher than the usual Bb tubas you see in school and community bands. It's very common for C tubas to have 5 valves - helps with tuning.
I’ve been playing tuba since age 11! Love this guy’s enthusiasm about the instrument.

The tuba is a fine part of any orchestra. The deep tone is pleasing to one's ears.
This guys tone is amazing

Best tuba intro ever for those curious about the bassy brass musical instrument.

The Tuba is my favorite Instrument
Then you love your side hustle playing your tuba while following fat people.
Greater demonstration Mr. Campbell. Could you tell me the make and model of your instrument and is it equivalent to a six quarter horn? Thanks in advance.
As far as I know Steve plays a B&S MRP CC tuba. While considered a Large 5/4, it is very very close to a 6/4 tuba sound. Wonderful instruments!
Nice. Tubas are big. My music teacher is Ms.Clatine. I’m in 3rd grade, Atlanta Elementary School.
So nice & LVLY instruments. I lv MUSIC very much.
Thanks, I loved your explanation. What are your favorite pieces on a tuba?

What brand of mouthpiece is that?
It's part of the Monette Prana series, specifically the Monette Prana Tuba 94

Do they need to buzz a certain note or keep a certain pitched buzz?
Could anyone tell me the name of the work at the end?
Symphony no. 5 by Sergei Prokofiev (first movement)
very Goood
What is the name of the piece in the outro at the end?
Does anyone know the name of the first song at the beginning of the video? or all that he demonstrates in the video!
Ride of the Valkyries
It takes talent and it’s impressive but the sound of a tuba will always make me giggle
I think it's amazing how he uses that slide to adjust as he plays to stay in tune. And he adjusts solely based on sound alone.
I always think/want to say "theyre so BIG", but I'm a piano player before anything else, so I remember that and I'm like "oh wait I could fit multiple safari animals inside my instrument at once".
