Although Eloise has yet to forgive Pen, did anyone else notice how she protected Pen by distracting Cressida from insulting Pen? She confronted Cressida about her vindictive behavior, trying to get her to treat everyone better. Plus she checked on Pen in ep 3 after the comments made in Whistledown and took accountability for her part in the spread of the gossip

The actress playing Cressida does a very fine job. You get to know her a bit better. It's no excuse for her cruel, rude behaviour. But contrary to the book, here you get a glimpse of why she is so mean: loneliness. A mean Mama, a cruel father, every single chance of getting away (Lord Featherington , lord Depling, prince Friedrich and even Colin snapped away under her nose while she was trying to get to them.) In the books, she is the rude and cruel Lady, having everybody under her spell. I still do not like her, but I admire how well the actress is portraying her.

This was one of several decisions we all heard they made leading up to this season that seemed dubious but actually elevated the story in ways I wasn’t anticipating.
The Eloise-Colin-Penelope-Cressida intersection across the three seasons now is just that much better for me. And the Eloise-Pen scenes are as (platonically) romantic and wistful as the Colin-Pen scenes.

I agree!! I think it would be hard to convey this plotline in the books because it's a different medium that focuses on characters in a different way, so I don't mean to say that the books are worse for not having this element, but I do think it elevates the show to have more depth in the web of characters and I actually feel compelled to care about how Cressida developed now. I love that they added this!

I think Cressida and Eloise's friendship has honestly been one of the highlights of this season so far. Cressida values Eloise's friendship and she's trying to be better. She keeps Eloise's secret and it's clear she feels like she can be herself around her.
I'll genuinely not get over that scene of Eloise calling on Cressida. I'd honestly not be against a romance blossoming between them. And perhaps it's just me, but I have this slight suspicion that Cressida was "close" with a female friend at one point and that's why her parents are so adamant to get her to dump Eloise.

Well, you shouldn't! Eloise, she's not a lesbian in the book, just like Benedick is not bisexual, and it would be nice if it stayed that way! This is getting violently out of line with the theme of the story! With a character that doesn't exist in the book, it's not disturbing, but it would be here! Eloise and Pen are hurt by the loss of a deep friendship, but that's about it.

I liked that they showed a different side to Cressida, doesn’t negate that she was a bully but paints a much better picture for us to understand. It’s clear she’s in a way jealous of Pen so I hope they address that in the second half, you don’t just bully them steal a girls best friend for nothing. It’d be a good book end to her character considering what she does in the second half plus it’d give Pen the well deserved apology or at least acknowledgement

Most people blame Eloise, but I think Penelope is more guilty. Yes, Eloise was not a very good friend and she had mistakes. Most of the time she didn't understand Penelope. Because Eloise is a Bridgerton and she is used to the attention she receives, even if she doesn't want it. So she couldn't understand what was so bad about Penelope not getting attention. But other than that, I think she has every right to be angry at Penelope. Imagine that your best friend has been keeping a big secret from you for years and then spreads a big rumor about you. Anyone would be angry. Moreover, even after Eloise learned about Penelope, she continued to write bad things about her family. Then she got engaged to Eloise's brother. Frankly, if it were me, I would have reacted much harsher to Penelope. Moreover, despite all this, Eloise still wanted her to remain unharmed and still cared for her. However, no matter what, I want them to reconcile and continue their friendship in a healthier way.

Eloise accidentally outing Colin and Penelope’s arrangement in episode 2 is probably why Pen didn’t tell Eloise she was Lady Whistledown in the first place. She is so sloppy and cannot keep her mouth shut for the life of her. If she had told her her secret, she would’ve probably accidentally blurted it out where someone would overhear. It’s also probably why she didn’t tell Eloise about her feelings for Colin either. Like Cressida said, she’s indiscreet.
Besides, Pen saved Eloise from getting her head chopped off by the Queen. And she saved Colin from being in a loveless marriage by Marina.

    • @tracys169

I understand Eloise's anger toward Penelope but I've observed how she was as a friend toward Penelope. She often talked at Penelope instead of talked to/with Pen. Yup. Eloise was so self-absorbed. Although in this season, she started to realize this when Cressida actually put her on her place. It's so wild to me that Eloise is starting to listen now that she's friends with Cressida. Eloise is also 'sloppy,' she's not subtle at all, so I totally understand why Pen didn't confide in her. The article on Eloise on season 2 was to save her from the Queen. And per season 1, Penelope revealed the truth on Marina to save Colin (whom of course she totally was in love with) from a 'scam' marriage.

All 3 characters have deeper reasons for what they did. Penn had been writing knowing all the while Eloise was passionate about figuring out who Whistledown was because she is a lady who broke down barriers, barriers Eloise hated and revolted against any chance she got. Penn knew this, and had the nerve to say "not everyone can be a pretty Bridgerton!" which cut deeply because Eloise did not want to be reduced by the very thing the entire Ton thinks of the Bridgertons. I think that was a heavy blow that Eloise never got over. Penn got in way over her head and chose to write the things she did. Now she is facing the very real consequences from 3 seasons of writing about people, which while incredible during this era, has its dangers and she knew this. Many women wrote under male psudonyms at this time. Penn is brave for staying true to herself but what she writes impacts real people. She exposes everyone's secrets and could have told Eloise. Even if Eloise is brash, I doubt she would fumble that. Even if she did, no one would believe her because Penn is a wallflower. Eloise is always looking for ways to advance herself and other women in a time they were controlled. She and Penn could have worked together.
Cressida is a product of her family. She has not been nor does she understand how to love or how to let people in and be vulnerable. Her parents make her life hell and every chance she had was taken from her. But Eloise still protects Penn from Cressida. This scene speaks volumes and I hope Cressida gets a match soon and Eloise and Penn make up. Excellent acting all around in this scene

Penelope only revealed Eloise's secret because the Queen believed Eloise to be lady Whistledown, Penelope just wanted to save her friend from being falsely accused and dealing with all the disdain that would come with that. But i can totually sympathise with Eloise being betrayed and understand why she is shunning Penelope, given all the gossip lady bridgerton shared about her family, who always welcomed and helped Penelope.

      Major book Spoilers below:
Never in any of the books where Pen's secret identity exists does she Ever make up rumors about Eloise. Eloise also never was with the guy (I forget his name) from the print shop.
After book three there's a big time jump to book four with Colin and Penelope, and her secret identity plays a good part in book three too which is why the TV seasons shouldn't have reordered themselves. Because when Sophie is arrested it's Penelope's secret identity that helps the family to find where she is and free her, it's also mentioned a couple of times by Sophie how much Penelope's secret identity means to her because she finally feels seen by someone when mentioned and is only ever talked about highly. No one knows her secret identity until the middle of book four, up until then even at the end of the third book when she says she's tired of writing about everyone else and wants her own life, no one knows who she is, us readers find out when Colin does, and although he's upset, he's proud.
And Eloise isn't even around when they tell the whole of London about who Penelope actually is (which also btw she was only Ever courted by Colin alone, he realized quite quickly that he loved her and he was never mad at who she truly was, he was very protective and actually jealous of her because she was published and he wasn't due to the fact he also writes but is scared that he wouldn't actually be successful in his own right) due to her being blackmailed. Eloise was in the country side being courted by the man she marries and Francesca was in Scotland getting married to her late husband's cousin, all three of them overlap.
Eloise wasn't even mad with Penelope either. Cressida figured it out and since she hated Penelope and was a broke widow, she tried blackmailing Penelope for all of her fortune gained over the years, Colin goes to his brother Anthony and together with Simon they decide that the only way out of the mess is to out Penelope while Colin holds her hand and makes a speech about how much he loves his wife. Lady Danbury was proud of Penelope the whole book and helped encourage the relationship between her and Colin to happen.
It's a damn good series that I highly recommend. I know I gave away a few good chunks, but there's still quite a bit more unspoiled and it's very good. And even what I did spoil, it sounds so much better how it's written and how it plays out in the books.
Another thing I hate about the show is they take some parts from some couples and shift it to other book couples instead. Example: Kate falling from the horse? Nope, that was Daphne in front of Simon while he believed her pregnant with their child, scared she and maybe even the baby dead, despite fearing having children.
It's hard to enjoy the show after reading the books, because they changed so much. I give the actors credit, it's a damn good show, but when you know the books, you can't really enjoy the show, unless of course you hated the books and wanted a rewrite.
Also...there's no Queen Charlotte written in all these seasons like she is in the show, which is kinda sad, because she's so awesome, but yeah she's a complete show add on. She does get her own book which I haven't read yet, but as for the Bridgerton books...she doesn't exist.

I really enjoy the books but nothing this season has me fuming, I was more upset by how they changed Kate's relationship with her sister last season (I loved her relationship with her sister in the book).
For some reason this season the changes are dramatic enough that I think they almost had to change it up wildly so people who read the books would still be surprised by how everything resolved, and for me I do feel invested in this storyline. I think the one element I still miss about this season is that they didn't age up the characters. I think Penelope actually being on the shelf and Colin having years worth of travel rather than months made elements of the book more compelling that fall a little flat on screen (for me).

@@juliaboskamp9666I was about to say, it's hard to even tell they are going for Regency any more, it's a complete and utter mess. It's why I can't watch Bridgerton the hair, make-up and clothes irritate me too much.

    'I'm parched with thirst'?
The word 'thirst' is completely redundant here. Who writes these horrible, fake 'oldtimey' dialogues? It sounds so cringe and is the main reason, I can't really enjoy this series. Either let them actually express themselves like well educated aristocrats of the time period or use modern language.

redundancy in language is not uncommon and can sometimes be used for emphasis or stylistic effect. so while it may be technically redundant, it's not necessarily incorrect or unusual in everyday language usage.

I know that. But this particular example sounds ridiculous. I could write better dialogue and I'm not even an English native speaker.

@@raraavis7782We know you’re not, or you’d say “native English speaker”.
Native English speakers (and native speakers of any language) know that real casual conversation is full of weird choices like this.

Google “lamella orphica”. Maybe Cressida is well-educated after all. There is also a recurring motif of Greek references in this season.

Look. It sounds ridiculous. You can't argue that away. Certainly not by comparing this to ancient Greek. Someone like Jane Austen would be your reference point here. I've read plenty of literature from the pertinent time period and it sounds nothing like the dialogues in Bridgerton. Cheap, badly written, 'faux historical' 'bodice rippers' do.
If you're a fan of the series, I'm sorry I apparently hurt your feelings by voicing my critique.
If you like this show, good for you. I think it's very badly written. We will have to agree to disagree there and I'm not going to respond any further, as this seems an entirely futile conversation.
