- In this Episode we take a short trip to check out the ongoing restoration of the 1962 Beals Brothers lobster boat The Blue Dolphin. This classic 45 foot wooden boat has lived in Newport, RI her entire life and is now getting a full overhaul, including plastic framing, a new keel, new planks and much more to get her back on the waters of Narraganset Bay. Follow Lou and co-owner Ian as they take us through some of the work done so far as well as show us some of what lies ahead.

When Lou says he's impressed that's a solid gold compliment.
Lou where have you been, we've missed you?!?!
I learned Caulking from you Lou. I run a 36' old wood fishing boat. Your knowledge has been invaluable over the years . Great to see you back making Videos.
Lou is a gem. Thank you for showing us this nifty boat!
Good to see you back, literally like you never left. Was kind of expecting an "Iiiiiiiiii''m back!" Good enough though, we are glad to see you.
The ministry of wooden boats is Lou. Three cheers for Lou!
Great to see young folks carrying on the traditional shipwright’s craft.
It's a good day when I get to watch a new video. You are looking and sounding great Lou. Looking forward to the next.

Good to see you posting thought you had disappeared keep up the great work 💪
She’s beautiful
Very nice ❤ love you
It is good to see people getting rid of butt blocks like that. I took a lot of flack about scarfing in planks to remove butt blocks when I did that on the 1936 woody I restored starting back in 2007.
Thanks to all ❤ very nice boat building videos
Thanks Lou, great video, love to see and get a little tour of an interesting boat restoration, and Go Project Orca!
Thanks ❤ love you guys
I remember the Blue Dolphin in the 60's when I was a young kid hanging out on Bailey's beach
, ledge Rd and spouting rock. Mr. Cushing ran her hard hauling lobsta pots in any weather or water condition
S. But done like a pro dancing around the ledges. It was a beautiful boat, as Louis says..a gentlemans lobsta yacht.
He kept her moored at green bridge cove on the drive. The Blue Dolphin was synonymous with Newport...a blending of wealth and blue collar work. It was a pleasant surprise to find this video. Thank you!
Marty Casey...native Newporter
Lovely boat. Would love live in that.
Thanks ❤ Very very nice Boat ⛵
What a good looking boat. Good to see you again Lou, look forward to seeing the progress.
Amazing very nice a wooden boat building 🎉 like
So good to see another video of Lou ‘in his zone’..
So Bountiful ❣️⛵ a wooden boat building
Good too see you Lou.
Hooray lou is back
good to see you back
Louuuu! Your alive!
Don't know where Lou has been but I'm so, soo glad to click on my notifications and see a video from Tip's from a Shipwright. Lou is my absolute favorite. No one makes better videos. Every single piece of material is examined and explained, as is every aspect of it's installation in the greatest detail. What it's for and how it preforms, in a manner that's down to earth and plainly understandable for the common man like myself. Welcome back Lou, you were greatly missed. By myself anyway.
Ohhh this should be fun!!!
Good to see ya LOU
Thanks ❤Sir
Glad your back Lou. Love your videos.
Thanks to all ❤ very nice boat making
Yea!!
Thanks 🎉
Thanks 🎉
Only wood boats have a soul, but It's takes a man to read the wood and those are few and far a apart, and you are a Master
Another banger from lou, 10 for 10.
Welcome back Lou
Gentleman's lobster yacht.. there's a phrase, lol
Welcome back!
Awesome!
So cool 😎
Ex-boatbuilder from MA, but practised elsewhere. Yes, love those wooden working boats: lobster, Cape Cod Cats, sloops, etc. Years after trading the financial heartache of wooden boat building and maintenance for computer programing I got to build my dream house with an architect. My primary guidance to him? I want a lobster boat, not a yacht.
Great to see you again! There's no one on YT who has half the knowledge and experience that you have. Your explanation of your solutions for frames and planks is so creative and sound it's a delight to hear.
I seem to recall that that Lobster boats were held together with iron nails, that limited their life spans. Maybe those were just the Down East boats? Well, you had to keep the builders employed or you wouldn't have any.
Looks like a cool build!
Good work ❣️ Amazing very nice boat 🎉
Great to see another video, thank you. I always find your knowledge and enthusiasm makes me feel good to be part of this world! Thank you!
We missed you master. It is nice to listen and see you again.
You didn’t call. You never wrote. We’ve been worried sick. Wth. Do that again and your grounded Lol. So good to see you again
So glad your back!
Thanks..Sir 🎉🎉🎉
Thank you.
Great to see you on line again!
Awesome Thank you!!
You the man Lou.
For a second I thought this was the 1926 Grand Banks schooner from Stan Rogers' "Man with Blue Dolphin". And I was like, isn't that boat at the bottom of the Detroit River?
Cool stuff! This strikes me because I'm also restoring a 1962 wooden boat. Of course, mine is a sailboat, but all the principles are the same. I'll be doing the same thing to get rid of the butt ends on the planks. Using plastic for frames is certainly compelling, but I don't know if I can bring myself to do it. It just seems wrong on almost a spiritual level to use synthetic material in the construction of a wooden hull. Maybe I'll come around on it. We'll see.
This is the same guy as above, commenting from the channel I'm documenting the boat restoration on just in case anyone was curious about or wanted to check out the project. Cheers.
@@SavingMaverick55 watch the series with the little dory he built using thin plastic frames... Its a pure gem of a new kind.
Skills for making the best wooden axes .Very inspiring and useful ...Always successful friend Greeting from Bandar Alay Heavy Equipment Channel Indonesia 🇮🇩⚓⛴️⛵❤️😍👍👍
Amazing very nice ❤ Wooden Boat ⛵ Good work ,,,🎉 Best contact 🌹 my favorite channel.... love you 🌹 From Pakistan 🇵🇰🇵🇰🇵🇰🇵🇰🇵🇰🇵🇰
love the workboat lines and the plumb stem, like a tugboat. nothing beats a tugs counterstern though, especially for towing or ropework.
Very cool! Thanks Lou
shout out to Mike Morgan 👋👋who told me about Lou's channel 👍🙏😸😺
Welcome back. Trust all is well.
Great old boat!
Thanks Lou!
My favorite channel!
Tkzz for sharing,.,.,.peace
Bravo Zulu 🎉
I'd love to travel the sea's, i cant imagine there would be any more peaceful place on earth, unfortunately anything deeper than a swimming pool scares me to the core.
I admit I chuckled at hide-a-butt.
Great to see you Louis. Plastic frames ? Please could you tell me what type of plastic this is ? It looks like nylon, we have black recycled plastic here in the U.K. do you think this would be good to use ? Thanks in advance.
how long is the project in this video? days? or weeks ? whatever the shipwright measurement of progress is...? and t hen how much longer until back in water?
Is the a schedule for scarfing as there is for but blocks. Like the LLoyds separation by 5 system (2 over +3 down etc) ? I am rebuilding a sharpie ketch that used to be up in Point Judith. One of Jenny’s problems is the but blocks are too close making mid ships weak.
How much is all this work going to cost? I'm sure it's well worth it but I'd like to know.
Can we return when it's all done?
What happen to the new
ALDEN schooner that you where working on two years ago?

What type of plastic? Delrin, uhmw, starboard ? Thank you!
It looks like white nylon. And that cAn break because it absorbs water and then it can crack when its freezing. Curious too .
@@johndb102. I had no idea that nylon absorbs water.
Alwa6s enjoy time speñnt
I have all the faith in the world in you Lou and your skills, but where the fu__ you been??? No explanation??
Dugo vas nema sretan povratak
Lookin good lou, looks like you put a bit of weight on and the haircut shaved 10 years off of you
Got wet, then became stiff.
Starting to think Orca is in legal trouble.
So why dont you buy a plastic boat?
