Meadow was always his guardian angel. She was why that rat didn't kill him outside his motel room. Her voice prevented him from walking into death. She wasn't there when the man came out of the bathroom in the diner. She was just a moment too late.
Or what if she showed up right on time and Tony actually lived?
That’s if you believe the theory that Tony was killed in the final scene. There’s no evidence provided to prove that.
I read somewhere else that when Tony made that huge bet on the horse named “Meadow Gold” and the horse ended up losing by a nose, that it was foreshadowing about the series finale when Meadow arriving a few seconds too late to see Tony’s killer and warn him. Thought it was a neat theory.

@@davedaddy101 I wouldn’t say there is direct evidence. I would say there is enough to draw a conclusion that Tony was killed. Every time the door to the diner opened, Tony looked up and saw his family walk in. When Meadow walks in,, the screen turns black.
There were some suspicious characters in the diner. There was a group of Boy Scouts in the diner (same when Bobby was killed). Speaking of Bobby, they talked about death when he and Tony were on the lake. “You probably don’t see it coming” Bobby said. This a long shot, but when Christopher was waking from his coma he kept mentioning 3 o’clock. That was the position of the bathroom where the guy potentially went to the bathroom to get the gun to kill Tony, Godfather style. The Godfather was Tony’s favorite movie.
It’s a fascinating and clever ending for this show. Heck, it’s still being discussed today.

I like how they had James Gandolfini and Steve Buscemi drop the hard North Jersey accents and use their normal speaking voices.

I imagine Kevin Finnerty was who Tony would have been if he had a loving mother and had he not followed his father into the mob. Also when he says "I don't want to." My heart absolutely breaks.... he sounds so vulnerable with a childlike innocence. Fantastic acting.

This show is so damn good at capturing the eerie quality of dreams. The fearsome nature of the "man" who greets tony, the voices in the wind, the way tony can't quite see the people in the house that they call his family. I also liked the season 5 dream with the coach.

I can't think of any other show I've seen that is able to portray a dream sequence in the same way as I experience it in my head at night.
It's true, no series has ever done dreamscapes with the realism of Sopranos, funny cos it's a paradox, dreams/reality.

This was a strangely unsettling scene. I just think it was Tony B acting so cordial and so proper and Tony S not noticing who he was. Also the aura around the house felt very evil, all those lights but the figure in the doorway is almost pitch black and the wind blowing with the the little girls voice. It didn’t even feel like what purgatory would be, it felt like what hell would be. the devil is the king of lies and deception, so of course he’s guna make hell look warm and inviting.

@@MomMom4Cubs nah, he’s right. That lady was pitch black and there was literally mariachi music playing instead of classic Italian hits they’re used to playing at their own funerals and stuff. It felt way too eerie to come off the way you portray it to be. Remember Tony was positive he was going to hell which is why his humanity slowly corroded throughout the seasons and was a sociopathic maniac by S6. If he let go of that suit case it was game over for him.

I love the use of this dark, faceless woman that constantly haunts Tony's dreams. I feel like it's the idea of this idealized woman, this mother figure, this lover, whom he can never prove himself too. Whom he can never please. It's reflected in every woman that Tony loves and dates. All his goomaras, his daughter, his mother etc.

All due respect, David Chase is the genius. Gandolfini was the perfect vehicle to deliver it. Yes, James was incredible. But this cast never would’ve shined without a great creators.
The way he says “you can’t bring business in there” is an important line. Business in the sense of “unfinished business”. All the messiness and loose ends of life we leave behind. I imagine the moment before you die you probably think for maybe just a split second all of the things you never did, tried or finished. All the things you never corrected and all the people you said you’d reconcile with but never did. This dream is basically Tony deciding weather or not to just accept all the things he left unfinished by giving up the briefcase of life. It’s all those loose ends with his dysfunctional family, all the chaos that would ensue in the underworld if he died and all the people that count on a man so powerful...and of course all the stress and turmoil that go with it. Or choosing to just “let go” and embrace the release and nothingness of death. But right at the last minute he somehow hears his family’s call and realizes that maybe life is still worth living on some level. As tempting as it is to just “let go” of such a chaotic, botched existence, maybe the connection of family makes it all worth returning to.

That’s one way to see it and I liked it. However, I see it as If the case was his life and he was holding onto it. Letting the case go and getting in the house was accepting death.

Life is worth it. Maybe Tony didn't got what would've made him a well-rounded human, adept at all or most factors of life. However, he still got something. He still got a life. What he may or may not have realised -since I didn't watched the show I'm unsure- is that it could've been much worse.
Example: Livia could've really become a murderous sociopath and kill her own son in his young age.
What I need the one reading this comment to understand is that while we may not always get what we wanted in life, it could've been much worse. You could've been not here on this earth while you complain that you didn't got what you believe, would've set everything right. Sure, do complain, do criticise but also realise that things might have never begun instead of a botched or innately flawed and rigged beginning and a difficult childhood and onwards.
This reminded me when my dad passed away in the hospital '09. He died while I begged him to live... this scene touched me deeply.

Such a creepy, unsettling scene. I've always found these sort of purgatory, hell, dreamscape sort of experiences between life and death so fascinating and emotionally challenging, and it's rarely ever done to my taste on screen but this is phenomenally done.
Oh, it's definitely hell, I think when you're there, you're not supposed to be scared. With this scene, it's creepy with shadowy figures, it's entrance to hell, a mirage to make it look warm and welcome.
It's funny how your ego is stripped in these sort of dreams. You feel vulnerability, and this Buscemi character has existed in many of my dreams in some form or another. A domineering nature around him.

My father had a very near death experience in the hospital not too long ago. Not from COVID but septic shock, pneumonia, and legionnaires all in one. He told me about seeing some old friend who passed, his friend who has been dead asked him, “ you want to come in!? Everyone wants to see you”. And his friend listed others who had passed. My father said “I’m not ready, I need to go back”.
I been watching sopranos again and just saw this scene and man did it have some familiar and eerie aspects to what this scene is like. And same with his story it was a brightly lit room only it was a house outside a small street the width of a hallway. Weird……
This episode is about reincarnation back into the matrix. Tony couldn’t accept his karma with Kevin finnerty (the situation with the monks) so this realm trapped him back into this world with the FLASHY house and BRIGHT LIGHTS, all a facade. The real truth is the darkness which is meadows voice. If your father went back into the light, he comes back to this false realm and the matrix trapped him with his friend who passed which took a lot of emotion out of him. However, if he goes into the dark which Tony should’ve done he would’ve found pure happiness but we would never know because everyone else goes into the light…remember if your in a coma or dead REMEMBER TO GO INTO THE DARK

one of my relatives had a NDE fairly recently too, and saw my aunt who died in 2016. and they ran to hug my aunt, and my aunt crossed her arms and said "don't come any closer." when they both have the briefcase it reminds me of that. tony uncle al is doing the opposite.

Probably as an ironic gesture. Remember when Tony S killed Tony B. it was on the doorsteps of an old two story house in the woods and he shot Tony B as he walked up to the porch to enter the house. In this sequence Tony B getting Tony S to enter means DEATH.

This was one of the most haunting and beautiful eery scenes I’ve ever seen. How he says “I’m scared “ he doesn’t know why, There’s something telling him to not let go and walk in, holding himself back. His mother waiting for him at the door. Meadow (his guarding angel throughout the show) calling him in the background in a younger voice. The white light. Chills. Absolutely brilliant.

This is a common story, but there's a Twilight Zone episode called The Hunt about a man who dies and almost walks into Hell but is saved by his dog. Gave me vibes of this scene.
I think I remember the one you mean. The 'door man' claimed to be an angel or something, right? And the dead guy believed it, but then his dog started barking and going apeshit? The dead guy eventually takes his dog and leaves, and the last scene of the 'angel' has him looking annoyed as fire erupts around him or something like that?
This scene almost makes me cry every time, the fact that he can still hear his daughter calling for him. We lost my dad to heart failure, they said it hit him 20 minutes before we found him in bed. He was asleep when he went. So I like to think it was something like this for him. But whatever was in that house was to beautiful to resist. So he went in. Rest In Peace dad. Wish I coulda watched this show with you when you were still here. Rest In Peace James gandolfini, you were a legendary actor.

My favorite thing about this scene is how in your dreams even things that are so obvious and ordinary can seem to unreal and foreign but at the same time its familiar in a way that it always makes sense in the dream world.

I always Buscemi was playing the devil here. He was friendly kind and courteous "You can't take any business with you" I liked that the suitcase represented Tony's unfinished business, his life, his kids, his wife etc. The Devil appears as a smiling friend much the way the mafia sent the killers to bump people off, they came with smiles on their faces. When Tony looks as he tires to take the briefcase he knows this is no friend to me, that house that white light doesn't lead to heaven. I think Tony lived the rest of his life knowing when his time came he was going to hell, despite what he once thought. He always imagined he was deep down a good guy or not as bad as people like Ralphie, however they were all waiting for him on the other side in Hell. Thank god David Chase was not afraid to play around with these concepts and ideas. The ending of Many Saints when Christopher narrates form beyond the grave and it comes full circle as Tony looks into the coffin, he always said to Adrianna he was going to hell for Tony. Then we here him say "That's the guy my uncle Tony. That's the guy I went to hell for" beautifully, tragically, perfect ending.
As if there's anything poetic or romantic about actually going to hell.

1:18 imagine hearing that. Then chatting going on inside there. If I was ever in that place. I would be a mess. Imagine recognizing every voice you never thought you hear again of people who passed on. I feel like I would’ve asked “where my family?” He probably would said “they’re in there waiting for you.” Or “they’ll be here later.” I would been scared just like him. I would be sad and happy because I could hear them again but I don’t want to go inside yet.
I know there’s many interpretations of limbo but this was by far the most eerie.

Brilliant scene but creepy at the same time.
Livia at the door is the most unsettling thing about this brilliant scene.
It was brilliant, when he said “everyone is in there”. So his dad and everyone he killed and he knew in his mob life who died were waiting for him in purgatory, then on their way to hell they all will go. And what makes it so brilliant is Livia at the door of the purgatory, waiting for him she’s going to hell with them too.

@@TheJkuyYou can. Purgatory I believe, at least in Catholicism, is a state in which one is awaiting judgement from God to Heaven or Hell. It’s for people God doesn’t call up for judgement immediately, he’s still thinking about it.

This is so well done. My favorite depiction of what dying could actually be like inside your mind. We’ve all heard stories of the white light, seeing dead family members, being pulled towards something… just perfection.

James and Steve are master actors. This dream scene itself could be another drama series, or movie entirely away from The Sopranos. They act totally different characters, accents and mannerisms so convincingly in this dream from who they really are as Tony S and his cousin Tony B.
There will never be a show or movie that even gets close to this show to capturing what dreams are actually like. The writing in this show is also the best ever. I can’t put into words how great it all is.

The first time I watched the Sopranos a few years ago, I didn't really know what to feel about the whole coma thing. I thought it was a bit of a cop out, but now watching the series though again, this is one of the most emotional scenes in the whole show.
I always tell people who say we don't know what happened when it cut to black, we do know. This is where Tony is going to end up. He will eventually have to walk into that house and come face to face with all the people he caused harm to and not even Meadow will be able to pull him out of it.
Sucks but such is the way of tragic characters.
Meadow being there when he sees the light and comes back. Meadow coming through the diner door before he sees darkness. Sad as hell 🥲

This is a great description of HELL; The scene convinces you it’s all fine and safe until you feel unsettled, realizing you’re in a heavier presence. Your soul begins to weaken as you wonder why you feel odd. Your peers convinces you “it’s safe” or “they are all waiting for you”. That’s a strong indication of them wanting to torment you for eternity. …I’ve read similar near death experiences of people who were on their way to hell; very creepy. That’s why Ive accepted Jesus.

I think you were spot on. The house with the white lights was the entrance to hell and they were all waiting for Tony, to torture him for all of eternity. The suitcase represents his life. The moment he gives up that suitcase and goes inside, that’s the moment of no return. Now, David Chase leaves to each and every one of us, in our own imagination what it would be like to enter that house going into hell. That is the unsettling part. All the demons inside are waiting for Tony. All his past associates, including his mother. The 3 O’clock message from Christopher is meant to mean, the hit man coming out of the bathroom heavy with a gun, takes Tony out from Tony’s perspective, it’s 3 O’ clock from where he’s sitting. After the screen turns to black, Tony is thrown into the pit of hell for all of eternity to suffer for all his life’s indiscretions.
Sound insight. I feel the same way. Something very menacing about that party.

Not necessarily. He is in purgatory and experiencing a completely separate existence. It's metaphorical, if he joins the dead members of his actual earthly family in the stately house, he will supposedly die. If he rejects them and walks away he clings to his identity as Tony Soprano and lives!! This is my favourite episode EVER.
I had a dream similar to this around the time one of my uncles suddenly passed away, the only difference is that I came up to a similar looking house on my own which was also seemingly hosting a giant family party, but only my late uncle came to greet me at the door and I’ll never forget a couple of three things. He looked happy, healthy again and he was glowing.
Whoever wrote this, is a genius.
Also, anyone pick up on the fact that the house KIND of looks like a fancier version of the house on Uncle Pat's farm where Tony killed Tony B?
Whether they intended to or not, I really think this scene perfectly capture a part of our psyche that is different for everyone but similar in format. Tony’s favorite place, his uncles country house where he was arguably the happiest (as a child, like most of us), filled with family during a festive party. I don’t know if anyone else feels like this, but I definitely have an idealized version of some sort of event that happened when I was a kid in a big old house like this, and I’m sure if I’m ever near death that’s probably what I’ll picture too.
This scene always creeped me out. The way you can see people but you don’t see one face, a voice coming from the woods, it just always left me feeling uneasy for some reason.

1:15 No one on the porch then at 1:19 a silhouette of livia appears behind him as soon as Tony B mentions "he's going home". Talk about creepy. Such a well done scene. Captures the feeling of the unknown and dread perfectly.
