BOX JUNCTIONS UK: How to use them and what to do if you go into one by accident

  • Box junctions can be confusing for a lot of drivers. Unfortunately quite a few do it wrong and end up with fines or not being able to go through properly.
    If you have ever been fined for stopping box junction in a box junction then you will know how frustrating it can be. The best way to avoid it in the first place is keeping a good distance between you and the vehicle in front. Awareness of floor markings also important.
    When the floor is wet, floor markings will be harder to see so be sure to pay more attention in those of conditions.

      p.s. nothing wrong with crisp sandwiches, particularly the prawn cocktail variety. Also, banana sandwiches can go down well if they're the correct level of ripeness.

    This is far, far the best one that I have watched. I am a cyclist and have started to go home a different route and have now have to go into the yellow box. I felt that I needed to check that I was doing the right thing, before, during and after. Glad to say my memory has done myself proud as I have been doing it correctly. I have noticed that many moterist don't seem to know what to do and that does scare me a bit.

      Thank you. And yes you’re right, quite a few drivers are either scared to stop in the box when they can, or are so afraid of getting a fine that when they do enter it, they rush to get out again. Hopefully this will show a few people how to do it correctly. 😃

    I was in an accident two days ago. The right turn that I was making had filter lights on. I was fourth in the flow of traffic and a car that was going straight that had gone passed her lights (but the traffic was too built up to go through the box junction) just set off, couldn't see her lights were on red (didn't check) and hit my car as I was driving through on the green filter light. She's trying to argue she had the right of way, I have dash cam footage from the car behind her to prove her lights were red when she moved, but it's really knocked my confidence.

    • @ZONDOdriving
      @ZONDOdriving  Před 3 lety +2

      If her light was red and you have video evidence I wouldn't worry about it. The insurance should do the right thing. That's why I bought myself a dash cam. They are invaluable in those situations. Don't let it knock your confidence, some drivers make mistakes and they are told by their insurance to not accept the blame. So don't stress 🙂

    The amount of times I see drivers NOT entering the box when wanting to turn right drives me mad. It's similar to drivers who don't pull forward at green lights where there is NO box junction, meaning that fewer cars can get through legally when the oncoming traffic has cleared.

    Nice stuff, except id make it clear that you are not supposed to enter a box junction (unless turning right) unless the exit is clear. In some of the comments below its mentioned about 'driving very slowly' and I think thats what you say towards the end of the video even though you were going straight on. Granted, if your only other option is to stop, moving forward slowly might save you from a ticket, and i get your intention. Just think that would have been a good time to point out the correct rule for, as i said, clarity.

    • @ZONDOdriving
      @ZONDOdriving  Před rokem +1

      Very good points raised. Thank you Steve.

    • @keith6400
      @keith6400 Před rokem

      You may only enter the yellow box area if your exit road or lane is clear whatever way you are going. You may enter the box when turning right if it is just oncoming traffic not allowing you to complete the turn. That is clear at the time you enter the box. Dash cam may help you if ticketed and you can prove other driver/s changed lanes and nicked your space. in your lane the other side of the box. This can happen. If going straight ahead and you know enforcement cameras are on the box and all the traffic suddenly stops leaving you stuck as the only vehicle in the box, consider turning right even though that is not where you want to go. This may give you a legal get out.

  • @UzomaChinaka
    @UzomaChinaka Před měsícem

    Great video !!. Leave enough space between myself and the car in front so I can see the box junction on time. If going straight, don't enter the box junction if no space in front, even if green light is on. If going right, and green lighted, be confident enough to wait in the box junction until my way is clear. Hope I got it right?

    • @ZONDOdriving
      @ZONDOdriving  Před měsícem

      Yes you got it right. When turning right, you have to also make sure your exit is clear before entering the box junction. If it's not clear, then wait behind the stop line, even if the light is green 😃

  • @stevestrange965
    @stevestrange965 Před 2 lety

    Nice vid. That bus driver shouldn't really be flashing you! So, if you're going straight ahead and the lights are green, you should wait behind the solid white line/ASL until clear, yes? So many drivers go right up to the box junction and then get stuck on the pedestrian crossing when the lights change...

  • @MichaelWilliams-mo1vv
    @MichaelWilliams-mo1vv Před 3 lety +2

    The annoying thing is when you have space but someone changes lane or cuts in front of you at the last second forcing you to brake and then causing your car to be partially on the junction and getting you a fine.

    • @ZONDOdriving
      @ZONDOdriving  Před 3 lety +1

      In a situation like that, you shouldn't get a fine. Because someone will be watching it on cctv and would have seen what happened.

    • @MichaelWilliams-mo1vv
      @MichaelWilliams-mo1vv Před 3 lety +1

      Thanks for the swift reply, l hope that happens. Recently l was turning right across a box junction and there was a space for me. There was a car in the left lane that already cleared the junction and had a space in front of him but he suddenly switched to my my lane forcing me to brake leaving the rear end of my car on the grid lines. As you said someone should be watching and would have seen what happened. However councils are crafty and it wouldn't surprise me if they just use the photo of my car's rear end on the junction as justification to issue a ticket.

    • @ZONDOdriving

    • @ZONDOdriving
      @ZONDOdriving  Před rokem +1

      Hi 👋🏾. The light for pedestrians wouldn’t be green in that situation. You might have a pedestrian walking into the road even though it’s red for them. In that situation, try to keep moving slowly if it’s safe. If it’s not safe then you have no alternative to but to stop. You won’t get in trouble for this. Hope that helps. 👍🏾
