Nice your children will cherish their boxes and hopefully will become heirlooms for future generations. I would clamp the scrap board to the inside of the box to add support while you chisel and router plane the mortice. That way any pressure to the back would be strengthened by the piece of scrap. I also screw the hinge in place then knife around the hinge that way you know the hinge will fall right into place after you cut the mortice.
Thank you I am so glad I found you site I have gained so much in information and inspiration.

nice Job sir, I like the term clock your screws, I had never heard that term before. While hinges can be a pain, if like with anything take your time and breath it will turn out great. Thanks all the best sir.

Is there a problem with installing the hindges on the outside; and would there be any problem not making the mortises?

After watching you drill the screw holes with tape for a depth gauge, I'm wondering if you are familiar with drill stops? We use them when doing sheet metal work on aircraft.
There cheep, adjustable to whatever depth you need and make it practically impossible to go to deep.

Don't run your fingers over the screw heads you will regret it if you get fragments of metal in your finger tips
