Tig welding a bike frame made from alloy steel tubing.
.032" wall tubing welded with both er70s-2 and weldmold 880 tig welding rod.
After welding, welds were put to the test with a big hammer. Most welds held up without fracturing except where the bottom bracket was welded to the tubes facing the rear. - Jak na to + styl
I have been using your videos for my base training. I am probably well older than you, & had to force a change in jobs due to the economy. My area has a huge dairy industry & many processing plants. I am working to get certified for sanitary SS pipe. I watch your info backwards & forward & absorb everything you comment on. A plug for you: The Tig Finger is the greatest thing since sliced cheese singles. I am in school, but you beat the pants off my school instruction. I couldn't do without you!
I knew that was going to be hard to watch. But all the effort was done for a bike welding video....not just a bike.

It was hard to watch but you can physically see the quality of the welds. Jody, just have to say, you are incredible. I bought a welding table from BuildPro along with a lot of tooling. If anyone has not seen or used one of these tables should! They are GREAT. Also, I have purchased several of your tig fingers. I love them. I have given several to welder friends of mine. Keep up the GREAT work!

thanks for your support and kind words and congrats on your progress in tig welding. As far as your question about the ball not dropping goes, that usually means either an internal leak, the connection to the machine is loose, or the solenoid valve not completely shutting. check the connection to the machine first to make sure its tight. Also, if the incoming pressure is too high, that can cause problems so make sure its regulated to low pressure like probly around 35 psi... check the manual
Another outstanding video! Quite a shock to see the sledge go to work. BTW, I'm still loving my Tig Fingers! Just used them yesterday welding some suspension components for the kids go-kart. Best welding accessory I've ever purchased - bar none!
Hi from NZ Jody. Nice bit of destruction testing. I read the comments. If they were doing welding on a farm they'd find that everything gets tested like this haha. Things only break when you're using them etc. The hole saw is a great idea. Thanx for that.
I want to see you do some sanitary stainless steel tube. 2inch x 0.065. I think sanitary welding is a good exercise to demonstrate.

I know it seems wasteful but this bike frame was never intended to be used for anything but a video. I figured we might all learn something if I beat the snot out of it. lots of effort but it was actually pretty fun and I dont regret the work.
Great info on almost everything. There is one thing that doesn't sit well with me though (which really surprises me, because it is the first time I've seen something like this in any of your videos).
Keeping the frame in the jig for welding does not decrease distortion, retraining the frame while welding actively increases distortion. This is true for bike frames but it applies to other fabrications with thin wall tubing..
Jigs should be used to align and tack, but in most situations a frame should not be restrained during welding. While a spring restrained piece may allow for less distortion in fabrications that don't involve thin wall tubing, the same is not the case when you are using thin wall tubing.
Also, typically bike frame tubes are either welded in a single all-the-way-around pass, or in opposing sections, i.e. welding the first 6th, then the fourth 6th, then the second sixth, then the fifth 6th...and so on, to balance around the central axis.

In a previous career I was a frame welder and made custom frames for people as well. I don't know anyone who does this professionally that welds restrained in a jig. The oft sighted logic is that it increases stress and distortion too much.

My machine doesn't have pulse, but under the hood it looks the same as what you see in the video. I set my machine to around 60 amps, because I like having a little extra heat available if I need it, and use the pedal. I do not pulse with my foot. I just keep nice steady movements. The key for me is keeping the puddle satisfied with filler. I dab often and that helps control the heat and prevent blowing holes. Hope that helps!
Bike frame builders do some amazing welding.
Only on the more expensive ones....the cheap ones are still practically good,but they look very untidy.
Brings back memories. I welded frames for JMC racing made out of 4130 chromoly using the same filler rod. These frames were for BMX racing.
i just got a steel dirtjump frame today...really nice love how tiny and yet uniform the welds are(it is tig welded,not brazed or stuff like that).obviously aluminium looks cool with those big well arranged welds,but i do have a special place for steel and how it looks and behaves.
I got a Lincoln Power Mig 350mp recently. Its still in the box but I have an aluminum mig job coming up.. Stay tuned.

Its a shame you destroyed it, it would have been better to see you ride into the sunset with what you had fabricated, with welding tips and tricks stenciled on the centre post! Nicely welded!
the 164 piece fixture is what i got but a few more ball lock bolts would help

its very expensive compared to a table that you would make yourself but actually very affordable compared to other precision welding tables like bluco. you can check out pricing or stronghand buildpro tables at summit racing or northern tool (dot) com.

Every bike anyone here has ever ridin started life this very way. Build it then test to point of failure. No matter your skill level & setup I would not ride a bike anyone built unless I knew it was properly tested & was not going to fail/break while I am doing 30mph down a hill. Hope that helps explain why he smashed the crap out of it when he was done fabricating it.

I was aghast when you beat that thing up, why go through the effort? Your buddy did all of that fine fitup and it was just scrap in the end!
Who makes that gigantic combination square? It's got a really wide head on it, that'd be a big help working with large square tubing when the little squares barely make it over the rounded corners.

Great video (they're all great btw) keep 'em coming. While we all know that you did this just as an exercise, did you check the alignment of the frame after you welded it up? One can get old-head frame builders into a lather pretty quickly by suggesting that clamp-it-all-into-the-jig and weld is the best way to build a frame.
sweet welding there.....i noticed your wearing a ring....be careful it an accident waiting to happen...ive seen a ring nearly cut off a finger off from crushing...and another short on a starter live to earth... ring melted ........both made a mess...i don't wear ring now

Cool video, wish I could make welds that nice in that type of stock.
I'm on an FSAE team and we build a car chassis out of .035, .049 and .065 steel tubing and it's way too easy to knock a hole. I'm running 35 amps for .035 stock with ER-70, and I can never seem to get a decent weld. Always either not enough filler, or the filler isn't melted in enough. Beautiful welds though

Jody, you, your videos, and tig finger are the bomb! I bought a tig finger for my welding class and after the first day of using it my teacher was very impressed and said he would of put my weld on the welds of honor board if he had one for the tig process. Keep in mind I never tig welded before and this was only my 3rd week of class! Quick question. What could be the causes of the ball in the flow meter not dropping after your done welding? Its great, it's tough, I enjoy watching, i do carbon tubes and carbon plates adhesive together w/9340. But l love watching! I have a factory jig fixture too l built with 8020 from ebay. My friend danny machines my stations that go on 8020. Thanks!
If you have any leftovers of this kind of material, could you show how you would do this with just DC (no pulse). At least I happen to have an DC only unit, it would be interesting to see what to take into account with that kind of combo.

That table is really great for jigging up projects to weld or assemble pretty much any thing that will fit on it. Is it expensive ?

Great video. Is there any chance you could demo fillet brazing a bicycle frame. To my knowledge there is no video showing puddle control on the web. Your videos give the best look at what the welder should be looking at. It would be nice to have similar clarity for laying down the bronze. Thanks, Jodi.
thanks for theses videos and i know this one is dated - the closeup shots of filling and feeding are great but on this type of welding - a wide out to show or demonstrate your position would be oh so much more helpful - in learning to tig. - i was instructed to support the arm practice the placing and then proceed - but on tubing - the electrode is moving in an arc - and i can not tell if you are going up hill down hill and how your hand arm is moving - - how much stick out do you have and what size cup, what cfh on tank - - my guess would be that you have a longer than normal stick out so you can see better, therefore more gas and using something like a furric so the flow is better - i have tried to tig tubing and i suck - - i find i can only weld the top flat basically and therefore my stacks are start n stop looking and not at all near as pretty as yours- - i am using a glass cup no 10 or 12 i don't know 30 on gas, and 50 amps on everlast 205

thanks for the video, now sorry if this is stating the obvious but have you tried using a roughing cutter in the mill for your tube mitering? I personally have had poor results from hole saws like in the video. Much better results again with a hole saw that's one piece with the arbor but still not as good as the milling cutter.

did you ever end up using that lincoln machine? we tested a few pulse wave mig machines at a job i had a few years back. i was never satisfied with the lincoln, it had hundreds of presets you had to dial in to get you weld looking right, and if you were jumping between position or material thickness like we were, you needed several preset configurations. the miller version and cobramatic machine did a much better job of thinking for themselves.
Can you have a bigger bead on the tubes so that I could have a much larger radius on the tubing? I would like to grind down later of course. How would you set it up for that?

Have you done any tig brazing with bronze on any frames?
I think the holes are for expansion of the air to prevent blowouts rather than purging. Remind me to keep my bike away from your parking lot.

okay guys, and Jody, i have a question. in a performance engine you often have issues with melted/deformed pistons or the head(s) will bend, is it possible/reasonable to lay a layer with inconell on the pistons/head(s) before machining? is should make them hard as s##t?
Hey we have a Miller Syncrowave 250 DX tig welder in our school shop. and with mild steel the tungsten always gets oxidation and eventually rounds the tungsten and slightly contaminates it. is there anyway to prevent this?? or use better settings
