LYRICS
I leave the house as soon as it gets light outside
Like a prisoner breaking out of jail
And I steal down to business highway 15-501
Like I had a bounty hunter on my tail
Somebody stops to pick me up
But he drops me off just down the block
And along the highway
Where the empty spirits breathe
Wild sage growing in the weeds
Walked down the soft shoulder and I, I count my steps
Headed vaguely eastward, sun in my eyes
And I lose my footing
I skin my hands, breaking my fall
And I laugh to myself
And look up at the skies
And then I think I hear angels in my ears
Like marbles being thrown against a mirror
And along the highway
Where unlucky stray dogs bleed
Wild sage growing in the weeds
On some days I don't miss my family
On some days I do
On some days I think I'd feel better if I tried harder
Most days I know that's not true
I lay down right where I fell, cold grass in my face
And I can hear the traffic like the rhythm of the tides
And I stare at the scrape on the heel of my hand
Until it doesn't sting so much
Until the blood's dried
And when somebody asks me, "John, are you okay?"
I don't know what to say
And along the highway
From cast-off, innumerable seeds
Wild sage growing in the weeds
Thank you
And now I ask in ernest
Does somebody have a cable?
I mean, I was still feelin' it

This song. This song. This song. I'm sorry, this song? This song right here? I have never loved anything more than this song. I want to write cathedrals of essays on this song. I want to never stop listening to this song. I want these sounds to be tattooed into my flesh so I never have to live without this song. I want to learn every instrument just so I can play this song with it. I want to learn every language just so i can sing this song in every language. When I die I want my ashes inbedded into a vinyl of just this song. There is nothing more desired in my body that become one with this song.
This was my first mountain goats song, so it means a lot to me.
The beauty of "and i think i hear angels in my ears, like marbles being thrown against a mirror" has the sense of "cellar door" as a phrase.
Perfection
This has pretty much been the theme song for my life for a while now
Things get better bud
I requested they play this song. What a gift to be able to see it again!
Get Lonely was my first MG album and it might still be my favorite. It just takes me somewhere else. It's like a place I want to exist in.
❤
I absolutely love this song, it will always hold a special place in my heart. Get Lonely might be my most listened to album. So glad to this revisted version.
3:14 Matt is such a genius.
Interpretation of this song varies but I always thought it was about someone who wasn’t in the right state of mind just walking.
Have you ever done that? No mind given to your safety or needs or destination. Just walked and walked and walked and then you realize you are nowhere. But then again nowhere is where you started this journey.
I also got that interpretation. but to me it's also kind of about finding the beauty in that? Idk the chorus "wild sage growing in the weeds" invokes such a joyous feeling in me. Especially when it's in contrast to "Where the empty spirits breathe" "where unlucky stray dogs bleed" "from cast off innumerable seeds". Just like, yeah it can seem really bleak, but even still there's something nice out there. Just my own thoughts sorry for replying to a year old comment.
