  • "What a difference 1 frame makes!" We are doing an experiment with honey super frames and the most practical number to use 10 or 9, and helping to make honey extracting quicker and easier using hand tools. "That's always a plus!". By the end of this video I wonder if you would switch like us??

We trained and started with 10 manley frames which rapidly get stuck and really hard to move, i have tried 9 Manley and a SN4 which gives wiggle room but i do like the solidness of the Manley so might give 9 frames a go next year.

Yes we had used 10 frame supers for years! Do try 9 Manley and see how you go for a season, personally I find it much more friendly with any frame type using 9, both with movement and extraction. 🐝

I get the philosophy behind 9 frames instead of 10. But could it be that that 10th frames is the equivalent to all the extra build outs on the 9 frames. Does it really add up to be more using 9 instead of 10? I’d be interested to know

Hi Brad, apparently so, the 9 frame set up does hold more honey than the 10 frame. We will look into this and maybe measure a difference 🐝😊

Hi, great video. I use both 9 and 10 frames, like you say 9 is good for lots of honey - but can produce random comb. 10 fixed frames is good for multiple hives and upscaling as uncapping is more standardised. Still, every beekeeeper has an opinion I am sure! Could you tell me what extractor you are using please? Looks very effiecient? Thanks, Chris.

Hi Chris, thank you, yes we have always used 10 frame supers but extraction sometimes takes too long uncapping. 9s just work so much smoother and easier, and with the spare wax we render. We are using a logar. 🐝😊

I liked the look of the Logar from the very brief view but they're quite pricey once you've added vat and import duties. At the honey show the konigin looked very solid and good value if you have the space as it can't really be taken to bits, Abelo weren't much cheaper and they weren't that much better than the very cheap Chinese one we bought 5 years ago.

Yes the Logar is pricey with the import and VAT but it’s a premium product. I was also looking at the Konigin extractors and being good value but, I like simplicity so went with Logar.
