  • The Police were an English rock band formed in London in 1977. For most of their history the line-up consisted of primary songwriter Sting (lead vocals, bass guitar), Andy Summers (guitar) and Stewart Copeland (drums, percussion). The Police became globally popular in the late 1970s and early 1980s. Emerging in the British new wave scene, they played a style of rock influenced by punk, reggae, and jazz.
    Their 1978 debut album, Outlandos d'Amour, reached No. 6 on the UK Albums Chart on the strength of the singles "Roxanne" and "Can't Stand Losing You". Their second album, Reggatta de Blanc (1979), became the first of four consecutive No. 1 studio albums in the UK and Australia; its first two singles, "Message in a Bottle" and "Walking on the Moon", became their first UK number ones. Their next two albums, Zenyatta Mondatta (1980) and Ghost in the Machine (1981), led to further critical and commercial success with two songs, "Don't Stand So Close to Me" and "Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic", becoming UK number-one singles and Top 5 hits in other countries; the former album was their breakthrough into the US reaching number five on the US Billboard 200.
    Their final studio album, Synchronicity (1983), was No. 1 in the UK, Canada, Australia, Italy and the US, selling over 8 million copies in the US. Its lead single, "Every Breath You Take", became their fifth UK number one, and only US number one. During this time, the band were considered one of the leaders of the Second British Invasion of the US; in 1983 Rolling Stone labelled them "the first British New Wave act to break through in America on a grand scale, and possibly the biggest band in the world." The Police disbanded in 1986, but reunited in early 2007 for a one-off world tour that ended in August 2008. They were the world's highest-earning musicians in 2008, due to their reunion tour.
    The Police have sold over 75 million records, making them one of the best-selling bands of all time. The band won a number of music awards, including six Grammy Awards, two Brit Awards-winning Best British Group once, and an MTV Video Music Award. In 2003, they were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Four of their five studio albums appeared on Rolling Stone's list of the "500 Greatest Albums of All Time". The band were included among both Rolling Stone's and VH1's lists of the "100 Greatest Artists of All Time"

    They were incredibly tight as a three piece back in 79. Fast forward decades later where Andy had become a solo artist, his guitar parts during the Police reunion tour didn’t fuse as they did before and sounded just like random solo guitar riffs thrown into the mix. The cohesion of old was well and truly gone, - but thankfully old recordings such as these live on to show how incredible and untouchable they were from 1979-1983

      Excellent comment! Yes, the dynamics of success and independence have an unfortunate influence, but remember, they were completely apart for twenty years and decided to come together for the sake of the tour/fans. I had hoped they would have taken that commitment to the next level and re-connected to the point of total dedication to The Police the band and locked themselves in a studio for a year, perfecting a new album that would have blown our minds! The DVD of the reunion tour shows a glimpse of what that looks like...not easy to balance and compromise the polar energies of Sting and Stewart...but that was the magic of Andy. I think his peripheral playing is evidence of his choosing to stay out of that line of fire and avoiding the conduit that he used to be.

    • @podfuk
      @podfuk Před 4 měsíci +1

      True, it looked like he tried to make the playing more easy for himself. But reunion tour was still 5x better than Stings solo renditions of The Police songs without Andy and Stewart. I get these are his songs, but it sounds so mediocre and nutered when he play them with his solo band mates.

      The original recording was overdriven a bit, which I can not fix, but I did manage to tame the harsh high frequencies without dulling the cymbals. Also brought out a non-pronounced kick and muddy-tubby bass. One nice thing about this recording however is that it sounds like an ambient mic was mixed in and you can hear the acoustics of the bar when the snare hits hard.
      I don't know where this recording came from, but I A/D'd it from a cassette which was a copy of another cassette.

    Great to hear a very early version of Message in a Bottle- the introduction is different to what I've ever heard before (and the Hatfield Polytechnic first ever performance). I think you can hear Sting (I assume) playing a harmony to the guitar riff on his foot synths at the beginning. Also, they end the intro with that pause on the F#Minor @ 27:41, I've never heard that either!

    • @blackberrydreamsz
      @blackberrydreamsz  Před rokem

      Whoa...I gotta go back and listen to that again! It sounds like Sting had some flanging effect on his bass similar to Andy's guitar during the verses...Love that are working pedal effects on the fly!!!!

      @@blackberrydreamsz I reckon they must have only just got the Moog Taurus foot synths at this point (think Sting and then Andy both used them)- don't think they had them yet during the Rock Goes to College BBC footage that I could remember and that was February 79'

      I believe Sting had a Moog Taurus bass pedals at this time. But Andy's came a bit later.
      Sting (like Andy) used MXR Phase 90 pedals. At the beginning of October '79 the band famously "got rich" when they received their first big check.
      They went to the music store and spent a lot of money on gear.
      These new toys were first used at this show...
      czcams.com/video/19seUKwk5-I/video.htmlsi=qArUDf83QC7r7kcp
      on Long Island at "My Father's Place" where they had played just 6 months or so earlier. I think this was the same day Regatta was released. And Message single hit #1 in the UK.
      Kim Turner was busy cuz they were playing with their new toys. Sting's vocals we're going through his new Roland Space Echo. (You can hear at the beginning of the second song Sting shouts to Kim "louder!" Stewart got a couple of Synare electro drum pads... Maybe Tama... Not sure if Tama's were out yet. He over does it on that Long Island show...(the descending sine wave sound "boooo". Andy also had a new space echo an upgrade from his echoplex. And would soon acquire his P. Cornish custom pedal board.
      I have pios the trick is dating them. Cheers.
      Also... If you're not listening to >XTC• What' da matta?

      Duh!

    • @blackberrydreamsz
      @blackberrydreamsz  Před rokem +6

      That requires a long, technical answer concerning the instruments on stage, the acoustics of the room, the FOH engineer (who probably had to do monitors as well), audio engineering techniques, recording equipment available in 1979, the person who hit "record" at the show, and the unknown number of people who re-recorded it...not to mention the equipment they did that on and if they knew how to set proper settings.
      It also includes my limited resources at the time of uploading. Instead of spending a couple grand on mastering equipment, I EQ'd the recording for free with Audacity software. If you heard the original recording you would discover an improvement. What was the equipment you listened to the video on?
      Oh...and let's not forget...uploading to YT, even in high definition utilizes digital compression, which will degrade the sound, albeit slightly.
