- Replacement of front brake pads on a 1980 Ford F100. The calipers do not have pins like most calipers. Instead they have a a track like system. Early Ford car and truck disc brakes made this way.

My Haynes manual wasn't clear at all on how to remove that track. I kept staring at it wondering where the bolts/pins were until I searched and found your video. Saved me a ton of time, thank you!
Thanks for the vid. I left off the slide spring at first and my brakes would lock up. Realized what I had done after watching this. Mine is a 79 f100, easiest brakes I have ever changed.
Alot of ford's used to be like that, it's easy once you learn how
I wish I had seen this video yesterday! I have a 1972 F100 with the same style calipers and I took them off for the first time. Odd design, but I figured it out. I did pick up a few tips from you. Thanks for posting this!
Thank you very útil for me
Good video. Haven't changed the brakes in 15 years. Old truck has been sitting for 8 years. I would suggest that driving the clip back that you use a block of wood so it doesn't flair your clip. Again, good refresher video and thanks!
I appreciate the vid. I had to change the pads on my 1980 Ford. But instead of the slides coming out like yours I had to do the opposite. had to go from out side in towards the frame with mine. every thing else was just as you did it.
Thanks for putting this video together, Richard.
You are welcome.
Great video. Quick tip.
You need to drive a large chisel between the bottom of the pad and rotor. With the pad firmly wedged up against caliper use another chisel to bend the top corner tabs down and secure the pad in place. This and some glue to the back of the pads will keep noises to a minimum. Cheers
Thanks for the vid been a great help
Got a 85 F100 brakes still the same
I have a 1981 f150 needs front brakes thanks for the tips helps me get a better idea what I have to do!
Excellent mate very helpful , funny humour as well
Good video, but you refer this to being weird and unique. In fact this is a design that ford used for many years, with little to no problems at all. I wish they had left the design alone, as these trucks were bulletproof. Thanks again for posting though.
the process is easy undo the one bolt at bottom use a long flat head nail punch and hit the slide near the top just below the caliper, remember the spring goes back on top.
lift caliper up and out is correct method, should only take 15minutes to change pads
Helpful for my 93 ranger. Similar setup. Super weird. Haha. Folks at the auto parts store have no idea.
Thanks for the video man I have an 81 Ford Ranger myself as well and it's being a pain in the ass and you have a nice looking truck there as well looks in good condition
Thanks. Last winter a tree fell on it and my 1977 MGB. The truck gave it's life to save the MG that only had some damage. I was sorry to scrap the truck, but I had to. I got a 1985 Chevy C20 to replace it.
Fun fact: At least in my experience a lot of old fords that were built in Ontario will have some whacky combination of both metric and freedom units
Anti seize gets gummed up with brake dust and debris, it shouldn't be used with moving parts. Axle grease can't handle the heat of brake operation and will melt off and possibly impregnate the pad material.
Brake grease is what you use, also coating the outside of the pads where is makes contact is a method used to reduce noises.
good video. i had to do mine on my 76 f150 and they are a pain. thanks
thanks for the vid
Just saved me such a headache thanks
It's technically FREEDOM WRENCHES 3:14. Technically. Thanks for the help! Doing my breaks soon.
You can actually push the clips IN towards the motor which gives you better angle with the hammer. When I first did mine I also tried pulling them out and then realize I could go either direction. In is best! Cool lures too.
Yes. You are right. I discovered that last summer. I don’t know why I thought you had to go that way, unless the book said so. Thanks for your comment.
Someone who had my '82 F100 before me changed out some stuff, and everything I had bought to change mine won't fit. Rotors needed replacing too, going to have to replace the spindles, and probably the calipers too. Really dangerous how they had it, pads weren't even. What a mess.
Found out what they did. The spindles are from either a '72 to '77 Maverick/Comet, or '76 Granada. Had to have rotors, bearings, and pads for the front from one of those. Still going daily.
I got motion sickness from the unstable camara. Consider securing the camara in 1 firm location and work with both hands. No need to turn the camara to all locations you turn to. Otherwise, actually a helpful vide. thanks
Helpfully
HELLO, I RECENTLY PURCHASED A 76 FORD F150 AND THEN PIN THAT YOU BANG OUT IS STUCK, LIKE ALMOST MADE TO THE CALIPER. IS THERE ANY TIPS ON HOW TO GO ABOUT REMOVING IT? OR DO I NEED TO REPLACE THE ENTIRE FRONT HUB AND EVERYTHING?
Thanks for the vid.
when i drive the pin back in, my rotor locks up totally and doesn't free spin. also the pads i bought (for my model 1982 F100) they seem to have too much pad and the calliper wont fit back on. i have to use one of my old worn pads. Yes the calliper was fully compressed.
any advice?
Well as I was reading I was assuming that the calipers were not fully compressed. Every time I has a simpler experience, the calipers were not quite compressed all the way. I have had them compressed and thought it was all the way, but was only about 95% compressed. All I can think of is that they are not 100% compressed. Sorry I can't be of more help.
Im now sea sick... good vid tho.
Would this be a good video to use for my 1978 Mercury Grand Marquis? I assume the brakes would be similar but not sure.
I think so.
Do you still have this truck and how many miles on it?
I do not.
Thanks for the help , I was lost, Wasn't that your tripod by the wire brush?
That is the larger one. I have a smaller one. That one was too tall to get a good view. Glad it helped you.
How did you put the back pad on? Does it go against the rotor? My brakes fit extremely snug, that's why I'm looking for other people's experience, but I can't see how the back pads fit on.
Did you compress the calliper? If not, you can do it with a C clamp.
Yeah, it's a new (remanufactured) caliper. The back brake is very tight in the brackets where it goes, and I'm not sure if it's supposed to be like that. I can easily get the caliper over it, with the front pad in, but the back is definitely solid. I have to pry it out with a screw driver, rather than just pulling it out.
Gee, I just replaced my pads again today. Do you have new rotors? Ervin with my old rotors, it's a little tight. Now I'm struggling with my MGB breaks. Master cylinder leeks at the warning switch.
Only FORD could make such a pos system.
Fuck I want this car going this be buying My first soon and I want it to be this if anyone can postal ink to a year site with good deals that'd be great been looking forever
do you have a hot air choke?
Maybe. I have an MGB with a hot water choke.
electric.
the one big mistake you made there. was having that cheap little scissor jack holding that heavy truck up. always use a jack stand. ive seen people loose limbs using those cheap jacks. those are only meant to change tires not work under.
interesting thanks
Quit tapping it like a little girl. Do they sell men’s hammers where you got that from?
Go fuck yourself.
@@RichardLionPhoto Awesome reply, Richard.
