Paul, you very modestly omitted to mention that apart from an internet connection, a powerful PC setup, your home organ, Hauptwerk mp3 files, the headphones, and a mouse and keyboard, achieving "the whole magic" also requires you as the extraordinarily gifted, dextrous and fleet of foot operator to select and depress the correct organ keys at the appropriate time and in the right sequence to produce a sound that captivates your listeners.
i am only 15 years old but i really want to learn to play this instrument but a few months go my mom was talking to a woman who had an electric organ she was giving away for free it only has two manuals and even though it doesnt sound as good as the organ that you have i really like it and hopefully i can someday upgrade to an organ more similar to yours
Lieber Paul.
Thank you for the video, I didn't realize that: MIDI, invented in 1981, Hauptwerk released in 2002 and Grandorgue launched in 2006, were not already a thing, and a day to day use among organists since a long time.
Paul, I think you should make a tour of stops on your home organ! We have two of these at our musical school, and they don’t sound so beautiful, but I hope yours will sound much better! 😊
Just an additional post.... I always love watching you video's.... You such a happy go lucky soul who always makes me smile and laugh along side you.... You will go far with your music.... It is my hope that some day.... some where We will have the chance to meet and exchange ideas....
These Hauptwerk set-ups, where you can emulate some of the greatest church organs in your own home, must be a game changer for organists in all leagues all over the world, and also for the listeners, who will have access to such a rich variety of performances from any device with intenet connection at no cost. And by the way, I think I understand how the compositions are built up much better, by seeing the hands and feet of the organist, instead of just listening to a record.
Paul You might put a piece of colored tape on one cable on both ends to identify in from out.😊 Color coding really helps when the dark or in a hurry. I have a large systemw a great subwoofer, and your organ sounds great. 🎶 🎵
Yup! MIDI cable is best connection option for Hauptwerk, GrandOrgue and other virtual organ stuff. Tip for beginners: buy branded MIDI interface, cheap cable (no brand) often not working (error code 10). Greetings and I waiting for this video 😊
Midi has only gotten a new version ~4 years ago. I think these days, many devices allow midi-over-usb as well, so you don't need a dedicated midi interface on your computer anymore
I got a chuckle from this post for it's about 3 decades in coming. We got our first Yamaha during the late 80s around the time the DX-7 burst into view, we could not afford a DX then, we purchased an analog midi equipped version. No magazines to teach one, teachers were practically non-existant for midi in those days, it took over ten years to learn even the basics then. I don't have to remind folks now how handy the internet is. Now I'm trying to absorb the USB portion of it. Thanx
Being an audiophile, I foresaw component organ in the 80s as possible. Funny that came true huh? This is just started & growing, you'll see real progress soon.
I am PC challenged, so I needed somebody to explain it to me. LOL I have a 4-manual at home and also a 4 manual at church. Thinking about sampling the church organ, but that will be a project fora later time.
Great video Paul....enjoyed watching the set-up & learning a little bit about how it all works. I'm not a computer geek, but a good organist....if I have to set that up...guess I'll call in a 15 year old to do it! Your new music room setup looks great...sending you Blessings on your new apartment & a happy future there!
Hi! Thank you for the video! Could you show how to set up for the sound to come out of the organ's speakers instead of using a earphone? I speak portuguese, so sorry for some mistake. I love your videos!!!
Reminds me of setting up stereo system components. Mmm - pre-amplifier, amplifier, tuner, speakers, other components. And oh yeah, now where does the equalizer get plugged in, or out of where? The first time was the head scratcher. (To do what you did with the organ and software learning to play first helps)! From Chicago, U.S.A.
Wonderful to have the flexibility to play and hear the different organs. Okay, I’m a non-technical person for sure, but do you have some type of surge protector for the PC and organ by chance? (Btw, enjoying the Easter & Pentecost Collections II book here in MS/USA. I started on a couple of selections 😎.)
Hey, lieber Paul. Schon interessant, deine Hauptwerkorgel.
How do you do it: you listen to the music through headphones. At the same time, a camera is filming, which apparently also picks up the sound, so that I can now see and hear it on CZcams, perfectly synchronized.
Very interesting…. but I thought also the PC needed a midi card/box/interface thing? And also, how do you set the stops and pistons up if you don’t have a touchscreen? Surely using the actual organs stops/tabs and pistons is easier than trying to touch a screen whilst playing?
Paul a quick question for you >>>> Can you assign the voices to different channels or does it split the families to different speakers i.e. reeds in one channel, flutes another.... or can you establish pedal division, swell division etc to certain speakers.... Thanks... Doc.
I think you can! Don't ask me how, but I think I heard that being done somewhere. There are probably extensive audio settings and options in the stop voicing-module as well! 😀
It looks like you have to buy Hauptwerk advanced to do more than stereo output and per-pipe voicing. However, in GrandOrgue you can output to multiple audio output channels and assign each rank to an arbitrary output channel.
Paul, im new to hauptwerk setup. I have a 2 manual console. Are you able to assign stops from a third and maybe fourth manual within 2 manuals? Thank you!!
You can easily assign as many manuals as you want to each keyboard. You can also play all manuals from just one keyboard. Simply start the configuration for each manual and select the first and last key of the desired keyboard. Hauptwerk doesn't care if it's always the same keyboard.
I wanted to ask you about reverb actually, - you basically tend to buy dry samples and then you turn on some hauptwerk reverb feature or you just buy wet samples and thats it? (I was thinking about buing dry samples and than using some awesome tool like Strymon Big Sky)
I think it depends. Some people really want to hear the original room response of the space where the organ is recorded, and for that wetter samples are better. I personally like drier samples because I want the flexibility of choosing my reverb parameters. There’s also often a mismatch between the way organ sample sets and live recordings sound because samplers will record the pipes in full stereo close to the organ, but with full reverb tails. On most live recordings I’ve heard the stereo microphones will be placed farther back from the pipecase, so I’ve come to associate long reverb tails with a dry signal that has less side content. With a dry sample set, you can fix this problem by varying both the mid/side balance and reverb send of each division (or even each rank if you want) independently. That way you can have a dorsal positiv division whose pipes don’t sound like they’re right next to the Great or Swell pipes. Newer samplesets (e.g., paid samplesets of Piotr Grabowski) offer more of a compromise with front/dry/rear/etc. recordings of each rank.
Thank you! Do you need an extra MIDI cable (actually "interface") to do MIDI sequencing on this setup, or can everything go through just one? Your desktop is awfully crowded. This has caused known problems on my puters several times. My experts warned of this, I didn't believe it, but cleaning up and consolidating the desktop sure enough fixed them.
I believe it’s the same DIN-5 connector that used to be used for mouse and keyboard peripherals. With all the time and consensus it takes to gain widespread use of a new display or USB connector type, I’m not surprised that MIDI just piggybacked on USB like so many other things did.
I’d get Friesach as long as it stays free. That of all his free samplesets seems to be the most versatile and cleanly recorded. I want to like Cracov, but it’s just way too wet for me.
Then they find a knackered old PC, some rat infested amplifier and rotten speakers in a shed. And then you find out a few weeks later the Church have thrown their instrument in a skip, and spent the Organ fund down the pub because the congregation can't tell the difference. For Me, living in London, UK I can't practice anywhere as all instruments are locked away :'(

Thaaats true, but you can learn to do that! 😀🤓

A must see for those of us who can be so clueless when it comes to these things! Thank you, Paul!
My life truly change after I connected these cables to my Johannus organ!!😃
Thank you, that is my favorite hymn!!!
It is sometimes referred to as the English Te Deum.❤❤❤

MIDI works by connecting OUT to IN and IN to OUT. Think of it like you are sending the signal OUT of the organ and IN to the PC.
Thank you for this comment, I was about to send back MIDI interface, because it seemed not working, but it was the mistake from my side

VERY important point! You can waste hours and be sent crazy with a junk MIDI interface cable.
Definitely. Don't buy junk MIDI interface cable, only branded cables guaranteed 100% working and low latency.
I didn't expect MIDI cables to look the same after all these years. I had an Atari ST in the 80s with built-in MIDI ports.

Ein wunderbarer Beitrag. Ich verstehe jetzt alles viel besser. Bravo. 👍👌👏

Thank you so much for tuning in! 😀
@PaulFey What got you into playing organs? I'm a big fan of the pipe organ and am self taught 😊
Thank you Paul, you solved a number of questions I had around connecting a keyboard to the computer for use with MIDI.
I love the hymn at the end.
Sehr schön Paul Fey ich freue mich. 👌👍👏
Thanks for the instructional video while you’re in the process of unpacking and reorganizing your new home apartment. I appreciate the your effort .
A marvelous tutorial of the Hauptwerk system, Paul!
Very cool! It's so amazing how much you know as an organist. Thank you for sharing this. It is very informative. ♥
Thanks for very useful info with demonstration the way of connecting all you need for the best sound. Paul, you are the best.

Your real organ tabs can be set up as well I believe without the necessity to reach out for the screen - the thing may be different stop names
Also, can play a three-manual sample set on a 2-manual home organ?
