Who KILLED Dumbledore's Sister Ariana? What Happened to Her? - Harry Potter Theory

- Welcome to Harry Potter Theory. Today we're discussing one of the many mysteries associated with Albus Dumbledore’s secretive past: the circumstances that surrounded the death of his sister, Ariana. I say “many mysteries” because, as you may recall, it became quite clear near the end of the Harry Potter series that Dumbledore had many a secret.
Let’s start with some of the more benign mysteries. While Harry attended Hogwarts, Dumbledore was a mentor to the young wizard. And yet, for most of the series, he is frequently unavailable to him. This in itself seems not quite right, does it? Why would the HEADMASTER of one of the greatest magical schools in the world constantly be absent? Where did he go? And what had he gone to do? It all seems a bit on the shady side if you ask me.
Then, of course, there were the countless facts that Dumbledore decided not to share with our dear Harry, including the truth about how he would have to sacrifice himself in order to defeat Lord Voldemort. While I would certainly consider this to be the most ruthless secret Dumbledore kept from the boy, there were countless others, including the fact that he decided to give him to the Dursleys as a newly orphaned infant, and did NOTHING to expose him to the truth of who he was until the age of 11…I mean, I do believe I could go on and on about the things Dumbledore kept secret.
And apparently, so could J.K. Rowling. I’m, of course, referring to the upcoming third installment of Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore. One does not need too much of an imagination to conclude that we’ll be learning more about Albus Dumbledore’s secrets in this film. Personally, I am more than keen to discover what else the great and powerful Dumbledore managed to cover up.
Last, but certainly not least, is the 900-page “tell-all” penned by the infamous journalist, Rita Skeeter, released immediately after his death. With a title like The Life and Lies of Albus Dumbledore, you can imagine that it most certainly did not depict Dumbledore in a favourable manner, spilling what she thought to be a multitude of secrets about Albus and his family. In fact, as you may recall, this was the publication which first told readers and viewers alike about Albus Dumbledore’s close relationship with the future dark wizard, Gellert Grindelwald. The Life and Lies of Albus Dumbledore is also the first time we learn about Albus’ younger, ailing sister: Ariana Dumbledore.

YOU ARE STAR WARS THEORY TOO
You mentioned that Ariana had outburst, and that it killed her mother. OK that's a tough fact to swallow..
Brought on by emotions..
Than later all three were dueling each other(Albus,Gellert and Albert) but you have to imagine if she walked or hearing or sensing the magical disturbance it will would make her have an outburst. I'm thinking when she was literally in the middle of the fight, her outburst happens but they protected themselves probably with a very powerful Shield Charm, than Gellert used a curse to hit one or both of them, she tried to shield them with her body but got killed in the process. Albert, blamed Albus and Gellert cause he saw they doing at it like a battle of wits. ..
But wait a second, didn't Gellert and Albus(make a blood pendant when they were younger as teens or young adults) meaning neither could hurt or move against one another..
What made Ariana SO angry, that it led her to kill her own mother?
@@linzianna I know
Since its been implied that Ariana was an obscurial. I theorize that during the mayhem of the three way duel, Ariana drawn to the commotion came onto the scene. Watching her brothers and Gillert fighting made her feel helpless and scared, which triggered some kind of panic attack, allowing the obscurus to become volatile and causing her to explode.
Seems like the most logical explanation and what I always suspected too, hope we will find out when the next movie comes out!
I'm also thinking "magical panic attack".
I believe Gellart fired the killing shot but Dumbledore's spell redirected it and Ariana was the unfortunate victim
I really hope they would add a flashback scene of that three-way duel
I hope we get to see Alberthor in this movie or the next movie
@@jebVlogs556 who the hell is Alberthor? I think you meant Aberforth.
@@isaackim7675 That would be awesome!!

Hey Harry Potter Theory, Video idea, how do you learn to silently apparate? As always keep up your amazing work!
Added on with this idea, with the most dangerous splinches
Albus Dumbledore sees Arianna alive in the Mirror of Erised.
I now have no issue with Dumbledore's secrecy because it finally clicked what he was doing. I believe he was running the Order like a resistance cell. In that situation you never tell anyone anything unless they need to know it at the time it is needed to be known. Not to do this is extremely dangerous, particularly in this case when the enemy is so very good at legilimancy. This way, if a member is captured, they can't reveal what they don't know. also, every member would know that their life is subjugate, if necessary, to the cause - this being the defeat of Voldemort. Dumbledore demonstrates this when he uses his impending death to play one more stroke in the game which will eventually result in Voldemort's downfall. There are many brave men and women in the second World War who knew these things as part of their daily lives. It is not beyond the realms of possibility that Dumbledore knew of World War II and learned what he could from it.
As a counter argument, why was Dumbledore so insistent on being peaceful and giving people a hundred chances? It was a literal war.
Any Death Eaters captured were always going to be either released without charges or freed from Azkaban. Therefore it stands that they must either kill Death Eaters instead of capturing them, use their own prison facilities for any captured Death Eaters, or advocate for their execution at any Ministry trials. Considering Dumbledore's views on 'the next great adventure', you'd think he finds execution merciful compared to the Dementors.
Stunning/binding opponents when outnumbered (which was almost always the case) is beyond stupid, as the enemy will always have at least one combatant free to release their comrades whilst everyone else is paired off. Therefore, the most viable way to incapacitate Death Eaters is to do so permanently - a bone breaker to the wand arm and the leg will put most people out of the fight, and following it up by snapping their wand ensures it. If you don't mind the mess, then a *Reducto* to any limb should deal with them just as well, and the collateral damage can be transfigured into weapons, banished as shrapnel or summoned as shields. Furthermore, an *Avada Kedavra* can be considered merciful compared to some fates.
Dumbledore's inaction against Draco Malfoy very nearly killed several students - only with the immediate actions of Harry Potter and the influence of Felix Felicis was crisis averted.
This is not to say that Dumbledore was a bad person, nor a bad leader, just that he was a poor war general.
I lean towards the theory that you mention at the end of the video, that Ariana accidentally killed herself. It's tragic, of course. She just wanted her brothers and Gellert to stop fighting. She was a child, despite being very powerful. Magical panic attacks are deadly.
finaly i have been waiting for something on this topic for so long. and have never been given an answer
If they had wanted to then it would have been easy for Albus and Aberforth to find out whether either of them was responsible for Ariana's death. They could have cast the Priori Incantatem spell on each other's wands as Amos Diggory did to Harry's wand after the Death Eater attack following the Quidditch World Cup final to determine whether the wand had been used to cast the Dark Mark.
Thats exactly what I thought but couldn't remember the name.of the spell but I knew there was a magical way to easily confirm it. At least Albus could have ruled himself out and possibly Aberforth and then they would have known by deduction whether or not it was Gellert
Back than it could have been possible but the spell works from the last spell backwards. Since than both Dumbledores used their wands a lot.
But I think there is even an easier way: A memory for the Pensive.
Aberforth is still alive he could use his memory to look what has really happened or let someone else do it similar to what Harry did in Snapes memories.
actually the spell is called "prior incantato" the other effect it performs when two wand core brothers meet is priori incantatem just thought i should clarify
I suspect they were both too afraid of the answer being themselves.
@@nikiatyoutube even memories can be clouded by bias. It would only have shown what was seen by himself, and he didn’t know who did it.

Interesting theory. Thanks!
Keep up the good content Harry Potter Theory😁.
I think, regardless of who cast the final blow, Gellert, Albus, Aberforth or Ariana herself, the responsibility lie with Dumbledore. He resented having to give up his glorious future to care for his younger siblings. He already had an inflated ego about his own greatness before ever hooking up with Gellert and caring for his siblings, in his mind, was holding him back. At the end of the day, it was his own actions that got his brother tortured and his sister killed, regardless of who actually killed her.
Why couldn't he hire a nurse? Albus was capable of earning good money.
Grindelwald being a lunatic didn't occur to albus. Which is why he changed afterwards
Love ur videos and voice ❤️
Video suggestion- Can "Vipera evanesca" work on nagini?
Video idea for you to do:
What additional effects do spells have that are not seen in the movies? For instance, what else can the patronus charm do besides ward off dementors?
Another idea could be that she thrown herself in front of the casting to sacrifice yourself from doing harm to anyone else. Knowing she couldn't control it.
Also, this is part of why I hate the COG film. Giving Newt a spell that can show everything that happened in that street in France renders literally every unsolved crime, every false conviction, false belief, or lack of surety nonsensical. If such a spell exists, what possible reason could people have for not using it for everything? The death of Ariana? The ministry for literally any crime ever? Hogwarts to discover who was responsible for the death of Myrtle, or the petrifications in 1992/3?
Or clearing Sirius's name when that event occured. Had they simply used the spell they'd have seen it was Peter and not Sirius. Yet no one did a thing, not even Dumbledore
It would actually be rather simple for them to verify which of them killed her or what exactly happened. Just use the pensive and rewatch the memory keeping an eye on her when it happens
Psychologically how did Harry live out the rest of his life ? Did Harry have PTSD after the deathly hallows, did he become super famous and how did he deal with the extra fame, did he ever write any books of the events of his life etc.
No, he didn't become a Gilderoy Lockhart
According to the Cursed Child he became a workaholic.
@@adamH.1 how could he ? He actually did all the great things he achieved. And he would be dead right to tell people the actual story rather than letting people speculate about things that weren’t true. And I think he’d want to honour snape, dumbledore etc with how they brought down Voldemort.
@@DSVN23 well Jarry never liked fame, and Gilderoy in the second year showed him what would become of him if he got comsumed by fame
I just recently found your channel. Your theories are amazing. I heard that she was killed in a duel between Grindelwald and Dumbledore and while Grindelwald, Dumbledore, and Aberforth were fighting, maybe Ariana arrived in the scene and Grindelwald tried to hit Dumbledore and it hit Ariana instead? I hope we hear more of her in Fantastic Beasts 3.
They couldn't do the whole examine the wands for the last spells to see if that would have been the case. I'm pretty sure somebody from the Auror department would have been investigating. Although they would have all gone to Azkaban as part of their dueling.
that would certainly be a relief for Albus
I believe it was either Grindelwald or the obscures that killed Ariana but neither dumbledore or aberforth wanted to find out the truth because of their guilt
Keep up the good work!
I googled spoilers for FB3 and I regret it so much! 😭😭
Video idea: Can Voldemort see thestrals?
According to J.K. Rawling, Kendra and Arianna died in 1900, not 1899 to be clearly known. Then how Kendra gave birth in 1901, which she should been already died? That means there's no Aurelius Dumbledore. There's no 4th Dumbledore from the start. Plus, 1901 is not birth year of Credence Barebone. It's 1908. I have found proof, that Credence Barebone is someone else entirely. And why we didn't see no relatives to Severus Snape. Credence Barebone is Mr. Prince, Severus' grandfather on his mother's side.
I wonder if Ariana may have cared for Grindlewald to a degree since he may have been one of the few wizards she would know, being albus' friend. She may have tried to protect the men from each other but accidentally redirected the fire to herself in the process.
I think that it was Abertforth because he despises Grindiwald so much that he would be the one that I would blame more.
Grindelwald was bad. He used the cruciatus curse
Dumbledore's brother told Harry Dumbledore sacrificed many things for the sake of gaining power, including Ariana
And that was his belief. A decades long grudge he held against his brother, to absolve himself of any blame in his own mind. That doesn’t contradict anything in the video. It’s common knowledge they never really knew who was responsible specifically for the curse.
He did sacrifice her in a way because he resented caring for her and was spending a lot of time with Grindenwald. That is why Albus and Aberforth were at odds. G was encouraging Albus to abandon his responsibilities and start a war. Aberforth was more concerned about Arianna and disaproaved of their plans.
@@korie4198 he didn't sacrifice her. In fact, he duelled his best friend because Grindelwald used the cruciatus curse on Aberforth
Dumbeldore changed
This video is full of excellent points about an important but incompletely drawn character I had wondered about. Thank you. Your conclusions make sense to me.
I am looking forward to seeing how they treat her death in the film. Hopefully they will keep the uncertainty as to who is to blame.
Incantatum. They knew how many people voldemort killed. Surely Dumbledore could preform it on elder wand.
The last thought in the video seems to be the most likely in her case.
Dumbledore often knew the future. Did he visit grindelwald in azkaban who told him things?
Grindelwald wasn't sent to Azkaban but Nurmengard.
@@HarryGinn4Eva ooh yes. Ive had a recent thought that when he merged blood with Grindelwald some of his future foretelling gift came to him that way.
@@ageoflistening I don't know what that has to do with anything, but ok and even if GG was a seer i doubt sharing blood gave AD foresight. I think GG having foresight would be a family magic sort of thing like Slytherins being Parselmouths or Blacks being Metamorphs.
interesting theory
I've wondered if her Obscurial killed her.
Imo really it’s Aberforth’s fault why Ariana died in the first place. Him being quite a nagger, snappy, and a hot head all summer long towards Albus and Gellert resulted that three way duel. Dude probably always runs his mouth that ultimately makes Grindelwald lose his patience little by little….until that huge confrontation & duel at the end of the summer where turdy finally hits the fan.
That’s a very good point. I feel it’s likely that Ariana would have died from one of her own outbursts regardless at some point had she not died when she did (and sooner rather than later). It’s entirely possible and IMO more than likely she did so then. I think that makes the brothers’ beliefs even more tragic, if none of them were responsible at all.
wery interesting and if she was an obscureal it's highly posible that it killd her.
That's an easy question to answer: It was the wand 😅
I like your final thought. Ariana had reached the age when most obscurials die, so she would have died soon either way, so this final outburst of her obscurus could very well have taken her life. Maybe it was this incident, when he saw how much power an obscurus have and what destruction it can bring, that set Grindelwald on his path, trying to find another obscurial to use against his former lover.
What's interesting, though, is that they were able to have that duel in the first place. If the blood pact made it impossible for Albus to duel Gellert later in life, why didn't it stop them from duelling the night Ariana died?
It was because Grindelwald fired at aberforth first then dumbledore fired to rebound the curse to stop it so really it was just Grindelwald and aberforth were just dueling.
Maybe none of them killed her what if it's one of her own burst of magical energy that backfired on her or drain her to much
Stands
I lean toward the final theory presented in the video. Ariana saw her brothers and Grindlewald fighting and wanted it to stop. Watching the fighting made her scared and she had a panic attack releasing her out of control magic. Either the magic caused her to explode or the three men put up magical shields which reflected Ariana's magic back at her resulting in her death.
See I think Dumbledore and Grindelwald were having a friendly duel that turned violent and dumbledore's sister tried to stop it and got caught in the middle so it was necessarily no one's fault that she died which is why afterwards Dumbledore and Grindelwald made an unbreakable vow to never fight each other? See I think Grindelwald actually fell in love with dumbledore's sister and dumbledore's brother was against it. And Dumbledore didn't really care one way or the other because he wanted to break the rules and the foundations of the wizarding world to the point where wizards and muggles were friends with each other and wouldn't have to live in separation of each other where Grindelwald wanted the muggles and wizards to live together but so that the wizards would be an overpowered race and have the muggles worship them That was the difference because think about it why is Grindelwald so obsessed with telling Queenie that she can love whoever she wants true it might partially be to manipulate her into coming over to his side because she would be a powerful ally but also because he at one point in his life felt love too and had it rejected which is why he is so determined to change the rules of the wizarding world and tells Queenie wouldn't it be nice to love whoever you want and marry whoever you want because he wanted to do so and had it taken from him see and I think Credence wouldn't it be crazy if it actually turned out that he was Grindelwald's son He's interested in him for his power and because he's his father lol
Credence is alberforth illegitimate son
Her magic
Love from India
Nice
Albus died without knowing, so unless Grindelwald has some exposition without anyone able to report to the brothers, we have no chance of discovering the answer outside the boring possibility of Rowling simply telling us.
Another channel (SCB, I think) posited that it was Albus Dumbledore who killed her. Their theory is that Grindelwald was almost immediately overpowered by Ariana's wild magic, making her the master of The Elder Wand, but Albus accidentally killed her in the chaos, and it's how he became the wand's true master.
The y both did maybe
Your last thought about Ariana being the reason for her own demise was my initial thought when I learned of her death.
It was Albus Dumbledore that accidentally killed his sister and it scarred him because he knew it was him. He hadn’t forgiven himself since even before and after his death for taking his sister’s life. Because he was the one who ask but he said he didn’t want to know as he already knew the answer.
She killed herself so as not to kill her brothers
I think Ariana being what she was encouraged Grindelwald to go find another just like her. thats where the fantastic beasts storyline comes in.
Isnt story be like 'ariana attacks and her father takes blame on him'
No, three muggle boys saw Ariana doing magic (not offensive magic), and brutally attacked her.
@@expred thanks for info..now I will remember..
@@sudir_ebi Yeah no problem!
I am of the opinion that Ariana Dumbledore killed her self by accident
Any other Hufflepuffs here? Gotta represent.
Honey badger don't care! 🦡💛🖤
Hufflepuff for life, baby!! Woo!!
I think, even if it were an accident, at least some guilt would fall on Grindelwald. Dumbledore had a duty to protect Aberforth as his brother.
Ever since I saw the Fan Film For the Greater Good I've had the theory Ariana's magic killed her. In the movie she pulls the Curses her brothers and Grindelwald are casting away from them and toward herself without redirecting them into the sky. She does from incorrectly applying her own magic.
Sorry if this has already been commented: I thought Dumbledore explained that he stayed distant from Harry because he knew Voldemort made him into one of the horcruxes.
I am enjoying these vids about the characters before, during and after HP because I just couldn't get into FB so I haven't seen CoG either.
I have a theory that no one actually killed Ariana. What I think happened is that she simply lost control of her emotions and her Obscurus killed her. She was seeing her brothers and Gellert fighting, and couldn't handle the fighting. Aberforth couldn't calm her down, and that's when she lost control.
This video is straight up clickbait😒
Ig Ariana's obsucurus must have burst and killed her and that is why Grindelwald has a keen interest on obsucurus and Dumbledore is concerned about Credence as he sympathizes with him and maybe even wants to find a way to cure him
I like your suggestion that Ariana as an obscurious may have killed herself. There's logic to the scenario. The fight amongst the Dumbledore's and Grindelwald Ford has excited her Beyond her ability to contain her magic
What if Ariana Dumbledor wasnt actually killed by any of them. But a final outburt of magic in that moment caused the Obscurous to finally kill her?
Even if that is the case, that Ariana was responsible for her own death, I'm not sure that would be too great a comfort for the brothers.
2Nd
It seems crazy to think about Ariana‘s magic being the cause of her death. However, it is definitely possible.
Dumbledore killed her. That's why he defeated Grindelwald and how dumbledore new about the elder wand. In my opinion Grindelwald did not kill her because he loved dumbledore.
Anyone could have killed her. They were all duelling
I think that Ariana was killed by her own obscurial, not by the Dumbledores or Grindelwald , Grindelwald especially, would have the lowest chance of killing her. It is common for people with an obscurial to kill themselves in a really massive outbursts, a situation with such tension could easily trigger an outburst like that.
Since I find the Fantastic Beasts movies rather sloppy plot-wise, I would not be surprised to find that Ariana might still be alive in the timeframe of the movies. Who knows exactly how Obscurials actually manifest and if they can come and go with or without bodies, but with their dark angry power still intact.
Another theory: I thing noone killed her but her magic was reflected by the others coming back to her and distoying Ariana.
It could have been any of them by accident, but the only person who would have taken the opportunity to kill Ariana is Grindelwald. This is because the whole argument was about how Albus couldn’t go off to advocate for their causes.
I wondered, myself, if it was possible that Ariana killed herself when she tried to help.
unless JKR says something this is all useless

That's actually not true. Dumbledore was traveling in the first and second book he was absent in TOOFTP. Otherwise he was always there for Harry and his friends and guiding hem. even in TDH. Just by making Harry realize what was going on. Dumbledore loved Harry and everything he did was planned out and calculated. He was one step ahead of Harry all the time and knoiwig how it ends just made me appreciate Albus Percival Wulfric Brian Dumbledore even more. May he rest in peace.
