In the Avatar: The Last Airbender, there was one couple that felt like they were always meant to be: Uncle and his Tea Shop! Ok fine, maybe that’s not entirely true, but the franchise was full of some pretty amazing relationships that you just couldn’t help but root for. By the end of things, Aang wound up with Katara and Prince Zuko reunited with the gloomy Mai. Both of these couples seemed happy and as far we know, they lived happily ever after. But what if that wasn’t the case? I know I’m not the only one to see the sparks that flew between Katara and Zuko. Sure they started off as enemies, but deep down, the two are a lot alike, both coming from a tough past that included the loss of a mother at a young age. Is there enough there to suggest a potential relationship between the two of them? Well, it certainly looks like it!
Here at CBR we enjoy doing alternate reality takes on classic scenarios and today’s is one of our biggest ever! It asks the question What If Katara chose Zuko over Aang? Could the moody fire prince have wooed the fierce waterbending master? When could that even have happened? Today’s video will discuss a few of the biggest chances Zuko and Katara could have ended up falling in love and the fall out from each of those decisions. The cave episode was more of a comforting chemistry. A chemistry showing their understand for the loss of their mothers and for Katara understanding Zuko. Katara and Aang we're like kissing in the cave, flirting at some points, and most overall some episodes really showed their chemistry like the episode where they danced together 😍 and the ending def so i definitely have to disagree.

Yes you’re right at 3:42. The show was originally supposed to go with Kutara and Zuko as the main romance. It was pretty obvious because a lot of scenes where detailed enough to kinda start their love story. Unfortunately, I heard that the producers abandoned that idea to go with something more cliche...’the hero saves the day and gets the girl, yay.
But hey, that’s boring. It didn’t do justice to the romance aspect of the show if you ask me.
Lots of things could have happened if they got to be together. Water + fire= steam. Somehow, the air temple with its air benders would have been restored.

Besides, Zuko was quite hot headed and needed someone peaceful like katara to calm him down.

I knew I wasn't the ONLY person in the world just thinking constantly about how utterly WRONG this part of the show was. Seriously, with respect to Aang, every fairly attractive, intelligent man knows that girls would NEVER go for that type. Besides, ain't almost all monks VIRGINS??? WTF. Now if they would've made Zuko fight Aang over Katara and had Aang win, that would've made him more attractive, but to be honest, Aang simply wouldn't win against Zuko 'cause Y'BOY just ain't got the BALLS to handle the fire prince the way he would need to in order to stop him from comin'. WE ALL know that Aang couldn't possibly get this girl's pussy WET, but PREGNANT??? Once again, WTF. Who wakes up wishing they were Aang? Feminine, gay men ONLY; no lies. Everyone else wants to be like Zuko. Even Topf Befong was WET and HOT for his shit, 'cause at the end of the fuckin' day, Aang is just a BOY; Zuko is a MAN.

Atla should make an episode in korra revealing that zutara became true meaning izumi is half water tribe and that aang's family came from him and mai.
Also it works how zuko is a prince katara is kind of a princess because of gran gran being the leader and sokka being the soldier guy teaching 8 year olds how to fight.
If they got together it would have been forced, stop being ridiculous.
i’m almost positive the writers actually did leave hints to allow the possibility of zuko and katara ending up together, if they wanted.
But then Legend of Korra locks in Kataang as endgame (something in dire need of retcon). Interesting that Aaron Eihasz was not involved in that second series. 🤔
This has been confirmed by John O'Bryan in the Braving the Elements podcast. He said that many of the writers pushed for Katara to end up with Zuko.

@@FifteenRavens No it hasn't. Even Joshua Hamilton agreed with him on the podcast in a later episode. How the hell is it a "rumor" when they're the literal writers on the show confirming it with their own damn mouths?
@@haruzanfuucha John O’Bryan stated that many writers TEASED Katara and Zuko. Teasing a relationship and making them cannon are two completely different things. Give me a reliable source. Maybe then I’ll believe you.
So if Katara and Zuko got together, and since lightning generation is a technique that Iroh learned from studying water bending, wouldn't Katara help Zuko understand how water bending works more so he could be able to generate lightning?

Lightning generation isn't what Iroh learned from studying water bending - Iroh figured out lightning REDIRECTION. Big difference. Zuko never learned lightning generation, only lightning redirection. But Zuko already has lightning redirection down so I don't think Katara would have anything to teach him there. Maybe she could teach him other even newer skills tho.

I’m actually in love with the entirety of the first scenario. Personally, I didn’t like Aang and Katara ever… and once I first noticed the connection she had with Zuko I knew they would be much better together
I love it. I never shipped Kataang because of the last scenario. And she was more of a sister/friend in my opinion. I'm really sad that they didn't make Zutara happen.
Btw; I love Mai as a character but I never liked Zuko and Mai together.

I think the only reason the creators put Mai and Zuko together was the line of Mai saying she loved Zuko more than she fears Azula. It is turning point for Azula because she grew up believing fear was more powerful than love. She broke down because of that. If we can figure a way to work that in then it would work.

I believe that Zutara is possible. It was just that Aang and Katara were together more, and Zuko only came in the last season. If Zuko joined in earlier, Zutara would have had more chance.

Since I was younger I have been a Kataang fan. But recently I have been rewatching the Avatar and even though Zuko and Katara don’t have a lot of interaction from the beginning, I’m seeing it from another perspective. For a lot of people the show could make you think they’re giving you hints about a possible relationship even though it was quit more expressive and obvious from Aang’s side. My reasons are, even though they don’t share much screen time together, when they do, it’s something different between them. Like it is leading to something in the future. I have to say that even though I still love Kataang, Zutara would have made much more sense because of who they are, where they come from and how they dealt with each other and cared at the end.
Someone who loves Kataraang and has actually watched the show could never say something like that. You are just a Zutara fan who tries to hide behind the mask "Oh, guys, I actually love Kataraang, but Zutara blah blah...". I know this is an old comment, but it annoyed me so much that I felt the need to express it, even thought is possible that no one is gonna read it. It is my way to get over the anger. You know, I hosnestly hate Zutara ship because SO MANY REASONS, but there is nothing that I hate more than people like you who pretend to not be Zutara fans, even thought they CLEARLY are just to say something like "Zutara had a spark, it made more sense and even I, a "big" Kataraang fan, admit it". Oh, please, just give me a break, if you would have really liked Kataraang, you would have seen in this entire show that there is much more love, care and connection between Aang and Katara in only one episode that is between Katara and Zuko in the entire show. Your argument is that they should have been together because of who they are, so I'm guessing you are reffering to the fact that they are fire and water, the opposed elements, the forbidden love. Aren't you tired of this shit ? I saw rom-coms with this since forever and now I am OVERLY TIRED of it, but you guys seem to want more and more with this forbidden love, enemis to lovers, etc and try to seek for it in a kids' show which has nothing to do with it. Just watch this shit somewhere else and let Avatar alone. And besides this, what was so magical about Zuko and Katara cause hosnestly I saw this show so many times and I don't get it. The single time they get a little closer is in that episode where Zuko helps her to find the man who killed her mother and guess what, at the end, Zuko realised that he didn't know what Katara actually needed to find peace. Wow, he knows her so well, what I can say, they are soul mates. Oh, and that episode when they taked about their moms, that's something that everyone says, they have so me many things in common because they both lost their moms(and almost everyone in Avatar honestly, includind Sokka who is not really mentioned, but still. What about Aang who lost his entire nation, that doesn't count because it is not actually his mother???). What a big similarity, they can talk about it for the rest of their lives and never get over it or bored. And everything Katara and Aang had in common, well, that doesn't count cause Zuko and Katara have one similarity, and this all that matters. I mean, this is what people want and because the show didn't give them what they want, they blame it saying that "Zutara makes way more sense". And when I see how frustrated they get, I feel a lot of joy. Yeah, your ship doesn't and would never ever exist or be even a possibility and this is CANON and what the creators have wanted so at least have the decency to admit you are a Zutara fan. There is nothing wrong with you dreaming about how Zutara would be before bed, but don't start with "It is something different between them... xoxo, from a Kataraang fan" because is absolutly pathetic. I saw many comments which annoyed me, but never that much as to make me to actually comment, until yours(I guess I had too much, it's to entirely your fault). But now, I feel a lot better because I got rid of the hate that I feel for Zutara.

I like the second scenario because I could see Zuko asking Iroh for advise not only in regards to his relationship with Katara but also to help him understand the customs and culture of the water tribe and earth kingdom so he can help them heal after the war, after all Iroh had friends the white lotus who could help

The first option sounds like it would be more dramatic, emotional, rewarding, and suspenseful along with even giving some characters better and more fitting scenes. But I also love the second with more practical and mature moments in it with relationships. I would really enjoy a mix of the two.

I think your alternate ending for Katara & Zuko makes a lot of sense. Wish it had played out that way-maybe in a multiverse it will.
4:48 - *Zuko's scar being healed is lesser for his character, I feel.* The scar is a part of him as a visual representation with his bad past that tied him down of wanting to regain his honor with his father. His character arc was about and him moving forward despite that, so erasing it would lessen the representation of acceptance of the past which lead to the present redemption of Zuko (so removing his scar makes it seem like he has to be CLEANSED of his past rather, than moving forward DESPITE it).

Zuko entire character was him having daddy issues. The scar represents that. If it was gone, zuko would’ve been a more forgettable character.
I would say 100 percent no flaws in avatar if zutara was real and zuko kept his scar and personality. THAT IS LITTERALY THE ONLY THING I WISH ABOUT AVATAR, I 100 PERCENT FORGIVE THE LITTLE MISTAKES THEY MAKE ONCE IN AWILE. I love Zutara, I will stay and fight till the death to prove it. also to make it happen.🙂(can't say it enough, I love Zutara) but I would feel horrible for aang, but still! two of my favorite characters, top five are Zuko, Katara, Sokka, Toph, Iroh, (respectively) and if I were to add a six, aang. ZUKO AND KATARA ARE LITTERALY MY TOP TWO, AND THEY WOULD HAVE WORKED SO GREAT TOGETHER.(Sorry kat-aang shipers)

@@charlamcclaran7126 Yeah I was 14 when I first saw Avatar i knew that kataang is the endgame, but I was still rooting for Zutara and i didn't even know it was a legitimate and accepted ship in the fandom. Aang for me is like a lot lower on the list, cause I never connected to him. For me, the list goes like Zuko, Katara, Azula, Sokka, Toph, Suki, Iroh and then Aang. I was a teen at that time and related to Katara more lmao. I even related to Suki and Sokka was my ideal type. But not Aang, he felt like a really cute younger brother or friend.

I always felt Zuko should’ve been with Katara and Aang should’ve been with Toph. Both potential partners were so opposite I’m not just bending yet had such a strong connection in the end.

Yeah Aang would have gone into the Avatar state even if Katara's pinkie toe was at risk... I think a lot of people here are younger and maybe don't know that the best marriages start off as "best friends" first. Zuko is the stereotypical angsty hot guy (which younger me would have swooned over)... but when you hit your mid 20's early 30's... the kind and loving guy starts to seem like the best thing ever. And Katara is smart. She choice wisely.

You can see it when he tries to be sweet and sensitive with Mai and she just brushes him off and gets annoyed by him doing that (leading to their huge argument in "The Beach" episode). It's the little gestures that you pay attention to you notice kind and loving guys. Aang had an idealized version of Katara as an angel (which is not who she is; she is multi-faceted and a very deep and flawed character) and pushes his crush onto her. The last interaction they have before the end "kiss" is a fight before he storms off then finds the lion turtle. HER feelings towards him are never fully resolved nor is the development of HER feelings shown. Whereas with Zuko, Katara is joined to his hip from the moment she forgives him. In those few episodes, along with their past interactions, we see more development than we do for Katara towards Aang in the whole show, and it doesn't feel one sided with Zuko and Katara; whereas with Aang, everyone mentions how it is "Aang who would be broken" if Katara didn't choose him; it's very one sided, leaning more towards Aang's side. This is enforced in LoK where Katara is the ONLY Gaang member to NOT get a statue for her deeds in the war! (even the cabbage merchant got one!) Katara, the fierce warrior who detested being relegated to learning ONLY healing waterbending with the other women, the one who staged an Earth prison rebellion, relegated to JUST being a homely housewife for Aang, popping out babies until one was an Airbender?! (Tenzin) They turned such an amazing character into someone who doesn't have much standing and is just a "prize".

They were pointing at Aang liking Katara for a lot of the show, and it was purposely shown that those feelings weren't reciprocated on Katara's part. To keep the audience on their toes, wondering who she'd really end up with. We can see Aang makes her to be some sort of perfect angel, and it appears like a childhood crush. The Guru even said Aang must let go of this attachment of Katara to unblock his chakra, and we can assume this would lead to some character development or Aang letting go of this unhealthy view of Katara, but it never happens. So Kataang not only seems counterintuitive for character development but also on a romantic level. The last scene we get before the endgame kiss was Katara saying she "was confused" and didn't know. There were so many things left unresolved and it didn't naturally lead to that moment where they shared that big mutual kiss after Katara refused him many times before. The feelings seem quite artificial
I love both scenarios, although the second one would be preferable since Iroh's death would be big sad. I'm fine with Kataang but Zutara would've worked so well no matter which way you look at it ;-;

It was conscious decision to make Zuko and Katara's Crystal Catacombs scene look similar to The tale of Oma and Shu. Two people belonging to the opposite sides of the war (with the same colour scheme,the exact same character positions) share an intimate moment in a cave LIT BY GREEN CRYSTALS!!!

Aang having a thing for Katara is understandable, but Katara returning those feelings feels forced. At their ages (12-13 for Aang, & 14-15 for Katara) , 2 years is a really big difference. Zuko and Katara are also 2 years apart, but the majority of teenagers would much rather be with someone 2 years older than 2 years younger.

Atually, Aang was 12 and hence a tween, katara and Zuko were both teenagers, i had seen couples who were like 14m and 16f (this one is a couple even after 6 years now) and 15f and 17m, it never felt weird cause their maturity levels were same, much like Zuko and Katara, but for katara and aang, even putting aside age, their maturity level just doesn't match.

( I know Aang is 112 years old but mentally and physically he’s 12).
Number two they both like to act silly from time to time in the same manner.
And three since Toph is blind and relies on her hearing, I think Aang would be a good match because he speaks from his heart a lot. And Toph really didn’t get a lot of love in her life being treated more like a fragile burden then someone who you treasured.
And for those who worry about Tenzin not being born, I could even see him being their son too, since he was passionate and serious about bending. And both his parents were powerful benders who achieved Amazing feats with it. So restoring the air nomads would be just as important to him.

Another thing in the show that I thought hinted to Zuko and Katara was when she and Aang get their fortunes. Katara will fall in love with a powerful bender, which could be Aang, but Aunt Wu saw no love in his future, Zuko, however, is also a pretty powerful bender.
Edit 1: I don't think Iroh would give his life to Aang, I feel like because he's the avatar, the spirits would be likely to bring him back after maybe receiving a gift of some sort.
Edit 2: I see a lot of comments talking about how this might impact LOK. Mainly about the existence of Tenzin, he would probably remain in the series, his father still Aang but his mother would be a different person (same for Bumi) and his sister Kya might be the daughter of Zutara instead. Other than that I don't think the story would change much.
That episode clearly showed that the writers were talking about Aang when Aunt Wu said “powerful bender” go back & watch it bc it’s obvious.
