It says a lot that Bakugo, who later on explicitly mentions that overtaxing his powers hurts his arms because of the shockwaves of the explosions, willingly did a giant explosion that could have broken his arms rather than let Ururaka’s meteor attacks hit him. That is how seriously he was fighting her. Sure we can argue he was just being overly cautious because she’s friends with Midoriya but that just means he genuinely thought she could have pulled off some grade A scheme like how Izuku beat him in the mock battle.

There wasn't really a bad guy, except the bullies from Krillin's old temple but they get their asses kicked out of the story real quick, and ends with the twist of Goku *actually losing.* It's also where Roshi taught him the lesson of "don't become too complacent, because someday a new rival will show up to challenge you."

That said, it was probably for the best that Shoto didn't use his fire on Bakugo: Bakugo's quirk is that he sweats a nitroglycerin-like substance and ignites it to create his explosions; a fire attack could've caused all his sweat to explode (that's a sentence I didn't think I'd say one day).

I think it did wonders for his characterization. For all of his many flaws Bakugo is actually really very close to your average Shonen Hero. He’s Loud abrasive ,Talented and inventive. He doesn’t want to merely win he wants to win against their best. He shows a great deal of respect to those that earn it (Red Riot is probably his best bud and Uraka got his full respect and he got pissy at people for calling her weak girl)
Hell surrounded by villains and given an opportunity to go full sauske Bakugo instead flipped them off and started kicking ass because he wants to be a Hero not some cut price villain.
Really the only thing holding him back is his hang up with Deku and having some issues with communicating with the civilian population. He doesn’t have quite enough charisma to make it work as well as some do.

Yeah, it is quite interessting how he, who has little regard for anyone else is in that scene almost the only one respecting her and in general a lot more considering towards her than most. Of cause he developes his awesome friendship with Kirishima, but that only worked because he could neither hurt him physicly not psychologicly otherwise he would have fucked that one up to. Uraraka is a very special snowflake in that regard and I like it. Welp, the movie could be seen as Harry character development arc, Ron and Hermione subplot development arc, and Cedric Diggory's character arc at the same time (although he was killed at the end)
You know what? Actually, if compared with anime tropes, The Goblet of Fire is the filler arc where the main and side characters finally get their character development that ended with a reveal that the antagonist side is also getting their development that snaps back the protagonists from their less stressful filler arc (the tournament arc in this case) back to the reality that the true antagonist is back to ruin their day.

This allows the antagonist to start a spell that transforms his cult into snakes. It also has a good explanation as to why the protagonists don't cheat. Wanna know a great tournament arc? Ninjago: Tournament of Elements!
It introduces a bunch of fun side characters like Skylor and Karlof, provides character growth for pretty much everyone (Jay and Cole's rivalry, Kai's resentment that he wasn't the Green Ninja, Garmadon acting as team Sensei for a season, ect), and the reasoning for the ninja playing along despite knowing that the villain Chen wants to steal everyone's powers makes total sense. Chen has Zane and they wanna rescue him. But they don't just play Chen's game. They try to form an alliance between the contestants but due to a traitor in their midst, Skylor, who turns hero and love interest for Kai, the contestants are bested and they all have their powers stolen. Only through Kai's strategic thinking are they able to get their powers back and stop Chen. But it doesn't end there. The rest of the season focuses on trying to find him and when he uses Skylor, who's his daughter by the way, to finish his plans, they have to stop him, which Garmadon sacrifices himself to do. Great tournament arc, great season

@@samkathryn4825 Honestly, I feel like abandoning the tournament structure towards the end only benefited the season. Logically the tournament was only a farce by Chen to get all the Elemental Masters in the same area and divide them so they were weak enough to steal piers from individually. He had no need for it when he was now strong enough to just take all the elemental powers.
By eliminating the tournament, the stakes become that much higher. Additionally, tournament arc can become too predictable but by eliminating it, the viewer had no idea what was going to happen next and that increases the tension, surprise, and audience engagement.
Red talks about the advantages and disadvantages of a tournament arc in this I think Ninjago struck the perfect balance. It took all the advantages of a tournament arc but abandoned that structure before the disadvantages of the trope reared their ugly heads.

  • @Fluffkitscripts
    @Fluffkitscripts Před 3 lety +51

I like how ninjago handled this trope. The MCs participated in the tournament mostly because that was the best way to get to the bottom of the mystery, and the tournament derails to make way for plot progression at the logical time. Instead of the plot being subsumed by the tournament, the tournament only exists as long as it’s relevant to the plot. The tournament also acts as a countdown, because they drop evidence that the tournament and the way it progresses is an integral part of the villain’s plan, so if the heroes can’t figure it out and stop the tournament in time things could go very wrong.

He still has to learn how to deal with the responsibility of being a protector figure, and how to open up to people. He takes in that lesson from Genkai that he’s not a one man show, that no power, nothing even, is worth losing those you love or yourself. Basically, that it’s okay to care, and show it. I’d say it’s almost like prep for the self reflection Yusuke has at the beginning of the three kings arc.

When i see combat therapy, i quickly remembered a lot of naruto fight scenes where one of the character or maybe both characters starts monologuing about their problems that triggers flashback episode(s) and finally closed with the characters releasing their pent up emotions by screaming their rival's name while unleashing their strongest punch/jutsu/tricks to each other.
If you think about it: monologue about the problem, flashbacks, and finally release the emotional burden, is more or less what you do in therapy session.

I think this is a case that DragonBall (the original, without any letter after the title) does really well.
The original DragonBall has three World Tournament Arcs, and they each serve an important purpose.
The first one marks the point of transition for the series away from a purely comedy series about a boy with a monkey tail and into a more action oriented show. Also, this is the first time Goku has ever had to actually try in a fight before, with his loss to Roshi in the finals ingraining his want to always get stronger within him.
The second tournament has three major purposes, it shows us that while Goku has gotten a lot stronger, he's not quite "the strongest" yet. It introduces Tien and provides an excellent character arc for him. And it leads directly into the series darkest arc to that point, The King Piccolo Arc.
Finally, the last tournament allows some of the side characters to wrap up their plotlines (and relevance to the franchise), introduces one of the franchise's most important characters in Piccolo Jr and lets Goku finally achieve his goal of being "The Strongest Under the Heavens." marking the end of the original DragonBall and providing a nice transition into his further adventures in Z.
Each arc basically serves as a benchmark for us to see what new tricks our characters have learned and as a launching pad into the series' next stage

I think my favorite part about the MHA Deku vs Todoroki is that there's the whole metaphor going on with Deku literally breaking his fucking bones just to keep up with everyone and meanwhile Todoroki is trying to win by coasting because of personal issues. Since Deku was someone who obtained his power by general happenstance, seeing someone sully themselves in that matter would probably be infuriating. Of course it's not really depicted as anger, but you can see him be frustrated. If he was going to lose, it wasn't going to be in a half assed manner, and if he can help out someone in addition, bonus points

    • @MelvaCross

@@Mandemon1990 The best thing is that Bakugou almost NEVER addresses people by their name. His classmates get insulting nicknames and the only people he calls by name are the people he truly acknowledges. And that's only his pal Kirishima and his idol All-Might.
But at the end of the fight against Uraraka, he calls her by her actual name. Which is basically Bakugou saying "I accept you as an equal on the battlefield".
He knew that he would lose if she only touches him. She came close twice and almost wiped him out without relying on the ring-out. If he didn't have great reactions AND massive firepower, the fight would not have ended in his favour. He respected her abilities before and during the fight. But he showed his respect for HER at the end of the fight by calling her "Uraraka".
By far my favourite fight because Uraraka won Bakugou's respect which is a more difficult thing to obtain than a victory against him.

I loved the tournament in Ninjago Season 4. It took enough episodes to flesh out, but didn't eat up the entire season, and it showed relatively early that despite high stakes, failure narratively can still happen, as we see with Cole being taken out of the tournament after having to fight Jay (which is also a conclusion to both their arcs at the time, which I think is beautiful)
Also it doesn't get boring, because 1. Every fight is different, 2. Both the Ninja and Chen cheat, and 3. There's a bunch of Subplots (The senseis and mishako, Nya and Dareth, Cole, Karlof and Zane and trying to find Chen's spy)

How I imagine it is just that Kuwabara could probably understand what Toguro wants through fighting him, being that he wants to die, and he's not strong enough nor willing to kill him. • @redwings13400
      @redwings13400 Před 2 lety +19

I was super glad Midoriya lost, because at the time of the arc, he wasn't the strongest character in the tournament, and I think Midoriya winning this would have felt super cheap. The results of the tourney, aside from all the character development everyone got, really hammered down a status quo that set up the next season that was pretty internally consistent.
Bakugo and Shoto are the powerhouses of the class, with Shoto being the strongest student, but only if he doesn't hold back. Bakugo, meanwhile, was much closer to Shoto in power level than the two were at the start of the show, which means if the status quo continues, Bakugo could easily surpass Shoto someday.
Midoriya's quirk is obviously the one with the most potential power, but until he learns to control it, every fight he's in will hurt him significantly, and he can't keep up the status quo forever or he'll become useless. A tournament arc with relatively low stakes is a good way to show that he's not entirely there yet, because he can lose without dramatic world consequences.
Ochako is really smart and really strong, but not quite at the level of the two powerhouses of class 1A. Still, she's not going to be a pushover in future episodes, and sets herself up as a supporting character who hopefully will not just be a damsel in distress when things get tough.
All in all, the results of the tournament felt right and very consistent with everything we were told before, and the journey was pretty great.

Have you ever considered doing a video on separation arcs? I haven't seen it get talked about too often, but it's surprisingly fun seeing the cast separated while exploring new parts of their world. If randomly divided into groups, it's interesting seeing the new team dynamic or buddy system that comes out of it. Conversely, if a character is on their own, it's nice to see how they handle things without their "team" around.
