I had a bad feeling about the flywheel bolt repair job but, moving on. If Competition Clutch has there 8.58 pound steel flywheel for your application please purchase it. Very solid piece. Keep up the grind. I am very much enjoying every episode my good man. 👍
Thanks Jim! I think this billet steel piece I have on the way should be the ticket.
Noooo! 😩 it’s alright man, it’ll all get resolved. The boost controller will definitely help tie the build together. Great video Matt as always (GT35)
Tell me about it! After all that work, but I think we'll put this issue to bed next round! Thanks!
I love your perseverance. Keep up the hard work, I really like watching this project progress... also GT35.
Thanks! Will do!
Well that sucks! I was worried it was internal engine damage "broken" when I saw the title! I think the steel one should work better all around.
When we were driving and she just died, I was thinking the same thing, but when the starter wouldn't turn the engine over, knew it was the same issue, but we'll get her sorted! I think the steel flywheel will work better too. Should be the ticket!
I've got a 1.6L Chevy Aveo5 hatchback, I've been following your Cruz build and want to turbo my little bean. I might do a remote turbo setup for simplicity. Keep up the good work! 😄👍
Thanks! A remote setup sure would make things a lot easier.
Crank to flywheel dowels are your friend!!!! If you can install oversize bolts, you can install dowels. Drill and ream to suit. Very common in high HP NA 4 cylinders that suffer from lots of vibration. That said, wrong torque settings won't be helpful. Cant remember from the video, were they lock tighted as well?
This is true. I'll see what I can do to add some. The stock bolts were loctited as well. They come with some from the factory. You're right about that. I'll have to install the balanced crankshaft in this round.
Hi Matt! Sorry to hear about the flywheel issues. I've got the x18xe1 running a stock steel singlemass flywheel with stock m9x1.0 bolts (which i've re-used 3 times now), pushing 320hp no problem. I also think the aluminium flywheel is the culprit, rather stick with oem stuff unless its critical to upgrade to aftermarket. Oem stuff will always give better reliability than aftermarket.
Thanks for sharing! Definitely a lot of truth to that.
Your channel is awesome! I like all your DIY stuff! Peace out with your piece out! 👌
Thanks Samuel! Piece out with your peace out!
Gt35 baby!!!! Loving how devoted you are. I need your energy! God bless!
Thanks James!
Well, good thing there are no immediate Cruze meets coming up. Hopefully soon, you'll be back up and running! GT35
Definitely will! Looking forward to getting out and doing meets, racing, going to "Mexico" for some street racing.
GT35
poor flywheel issues... that must really suck pulling the transmission off/on so often. but great dedication, and keeping them hopes up. good luck!
It definitely blows, but nothing we can't sort / figure out.
GT35
I think the steel flywheel will be more practical overall. I didn't like the aluminum one I had. It made the car harder to drive in traffic
I think so too. The aluminum unit felt okay on the street, wasn't too bad.
I think I mentioned the over tightening of the bolts in the original failure video, the bolts on the 1.6 are the same diameter as subarus, and subarus do not have issues with stock bolts
This is true. You live and learn, but we'll get it sorted!
Factory cast iron flywheel is good for boost it will help keep engine spun up while shifting gears. Lightweight flywheels are better for all motor in my opinion.
The sprung dual mass flywheel is pretty weak. We'll give this single mass steel unit a try.
Yes dual mass is no good for high rpm as well I couldn't believe u were spinning it up to 8000rpm on stock crank and cams.
Just got my project 1g Eagle Talon yesterday alternator was bad and battery went out 80 miles from home on the side of 95 wasn’t a fun time.
Being stuck on the side of the freeway blows. It's unnerving with not knowing whether or not some idiot will side swipe you.
(Gt35) turbo hasn't given you any problems. 👌🏾👌🏾
I honestly think it’s something to do with internal engine balancing or the aluminum flywheel is chattering a lot causing the bolts to break
We'll definitely have to take a closer look at it!
I knew the bolts that broke must have been over tightened! Not that I'm crapping on you, it just wasn't making any sense to me. Sometimes I literally find 5+ sources for a single critical torque spec. It's amazing how often I find conflicting results and have to keep digging to get proper verification. I don't personally think the aluminum flywheels are worth it for the money when a lightweight chromoly steel version is available for less money with similar benefits and none of the downsides. Glad you're remaining positive. Hope you get it sorted quickly!
I know your advice always comes from a supportive side. You're right about that, on both fronts. At least we'll get it sorted out, and the replacement forged pistons are on their way. At least that's a W!
@@cmattdabrat We all make mistakes. You're gonna be the king of this platform when you're done. ;)
keep making progress don’t give up even if it’s blown bro
Never give up! More to come soon.
I have a 1.4 turbo be nice with that g35 turno
Damn that sucks, I really hope the next fix works! Can't wait to see her running and making boost. GT35
Thanks! It does but we'll get it sorted.
Gt35 I love what you are doing to the platform! Can't wait till you get the bugs worked out. Could Maybe apply it to my gf's 1.8 sonic but not sure how her stock auto granny would hold up.
My 1.8 auto held until 10psi then the diff broke. Upgraded to a 6t45 and it’s been fine since
Me too! Josh has more experience with the auto trans. Sounds like the 6t45 has been working well for him. Hopefully by document all of this it'll save you some headaches.
I love your videos bro i get crazy excited about them i believe the cruze is the new honda of the car game
That's awesome! There's more than one platform out there. I'm putting the time in to show my wins, and L's.
set painters tape on the car and list and categorize them from what needs to be done prioritized order
Love the idea, and it's crossed my mind.
ARP bolts and pin the flywheel.
DAMN! Dude you are amazing, keep going!
Thanks! Definitely will!
I have a 2013 Buick Verano with the 2.4l eco tech lol, would it be almost the same as your build?
Should make for an awesome candidate for boost! I'm not that familiar with the 2.4, but looking at it, seems like it's a good design.
No way... Your luck must turn around soon so you can just rip it and get it tuned well
But no can do, this is what building a project car is
Tell me about it! I'm sure we'll get it sorted and be able to enjoy the car soon!
Hi Matthew I'm sorry for braked flywheel I can't believe with that bolts u put on the flywheel it's braken again. I don't have this experience but call someone and have some advice torque for flywheel bullets I'm sure there is different between aluminum and steel flywheel
Not a bad idea idea. Thanks!
Gt35 Man it will come together soon ! A boost controlar will make life much easier
That's true! We'll get her sorted and a boost controller on soon.
Dang that's horrible. At least everyone is safe.
Waiting on parts is ok.
But why not go with duel mass flywheel? Unless the 1.8 doesn't come with it?
It's been a journey for sure.
So playing with my cruze I fixed the large boost leaks & I'm going to another boost leak check after a week of driving. So I went from 3psi to 11 psi and wow what a difference in how the car drives.
Be safe team.
Thanks Jeff! It came with a dual mass flywheel, but they're pretty weak compared to, well, if I can get the engine to shear the bolts off a single mass unit. We'll get her all sorted.
I bet! Big difference in those boost / power levels. Sounds like you're getting it sorted. Might want to do a smoke / boost leak down to see where it's leaking.
Dang! But hey, you can't make'n omlette without breaking eggs. What Motor and transmission code is in the Cruze? I might be able to help you out with some Data, Parts people have experience with and so on. (Those engines are pretty common over here)
Isn't that the truth! It's the 1.8. Engine codes are 2H0, Z18XER, F18D4, A18XER, and trans is a M32. Anything you can point me to would be a great help to make sure I'm getting the correct info. Not sure why this manual I have had the torque specs of the bolts marked incorrect.
I hope you can figure out all of the little issues with it!! Good luck Matt! (GT35)
Thanks Sammy! We'll get her sorted!
On the next episode LSJ swapping my Chevy Cruze 😭 sorry about the bum luck buddy. Hopefully you get it lined out soon.
LOL, an LSJ would be a sweet swap! Hell, if I were to go through the trouble of doing a swap, it'd be RWD LS with a single turbo.
what do you hear in the car, friend, I was thinking and turbo my cruze?
No starter engagement so has to be the same issue. What engine do you have?
Phong from PSI speed had a flywheel issue a while ago, he resolved it by putting back the little shim that goes between the flywheel and crankshaft, andthe m32 is no different, theres a shim there and it must be used.
Apparently what caused the issue was vibration and other harmonics shaking the flywheel so much that it actually broke the CRANK.
So make sure that shim is there.
Those torque figures look about right, heres the procedure on a Z20:
Flywheel/Drive Plate
Tighten: 65Nm
Tighten: 30 Degrees
Tighten: 15 Degrees
Those use a M10x27 bolt.
The OEM flywheel bolts for your crankshaft are M9x23, so 60nm+45+15 seems about right.
The shim your talking about with phong is a diamond impregnated friction shim, stops the flywheel from fretting, as when it does it wears either the flywheel or crank and you loose the tension on the bolts. Seems to be really common on 4 cylinders than only use 6 or so bolts to hold the flywheel on. I just put two 10mm taper dowels as well and never had an issue.
Looking at the manual, the only real shim there is the reluctor ring, but we'll get it sorted.
With Phong's car, I could see that. I have my other crank that's fully balanced I'm going to toss into this one to get things going.
@@cmattdabrat Maybe it was just the reluctor ring, it was a while ago since i did it.
Anyway, i hope you get it figured out.
Good build.
Thanks!
Gt35.... That sucks you keep having trouble.. sounds like me and my trans that keeps braking on my 6.0
Hopefully all this trouble saves someone from having the same issue down the road. We'll get her sorted!
@@cmattdabrat yep just gotta keep pushing forward and one day it will all come together.. now you need some rims with those new zzp coil overs… I love zzp
All I have to do is comment Gt-35 you say? lol nah, but that cruze is going to be a beast once all its quirks are settled, can't wait!
Thanks!!! That's right, on the video in the card / link.
Gt35 keep it up it will work out in the end.
Thanks! I think so too.
(Gt35) on a tow truck is not what you want Matt, gotta have some boost Matt.
I'm looking forward to it just holding onto that boost, rather than taking rides on tow trucks.
GT35! I would love one for my single cam Honda!
Oh nice! Definitely a proven format.
Damn was out in Houston for Tx2k also. Gt35!
I so wanted to go, but my schedule just didn't align... and was hoping I could have brought the Cruze at least to spectate.
What numbers are you aiming for after it’s all said and done? Would you ever consider swapping the engine later on?
Shooting for numbers around 450-500whp. If I did do any engine swap, it would be converting it to RWD with a turbo LS 5.3.
@@cmattdabrat a 4.8 with a 200 shot of naws will get you in the 10s most likely. They did a blazer with 4.8 and a 300 shot on a stock unopened 4.8 and ran 10s this car is much lighter.
@@cmattdabrat awesome brother! Looks like you’ll get there soon enough I’ll follow along on the ride. Keep uploading you’re going to blow up pretty soon.
Long time fan so glad your making progress:) I've been trying to research on how to turbo my sonic with the same engine. Anyone know if thats doable or even worth it
Thanks for the support Johnny! You could do it. Depending on how crazy you want to go with the setup, could be easy as pie, or a huge undertaking. The stock turbo setup that comes on the VXR would be a pretty easy turbo to add.
Alright ill look into that. What would you recommend for parts to start buying first? I want to get everything gathered before I start in maybe a year
Where did you get that intake manifold
I made it.

Brother, I am so sorry for you! I got my 2020 Camry XSE rear-ended Saturday at a stoplight! I am a spine patient with C2-C7 fused together and now this crap! The wife's back is now jacked up too. The crazy thing is I watch the dude stop behind me and then as soon as I stopped looking in the Rearview mirror. He accelerated right into the back of us! Once I got the car stopped and the seatbelt lose, I got out and the pain made me get back in the car with my wife's assistance.. Sigh, We will build again and better Brother! Keep your head up! He was in a lift Chevy blaze with hardly no damage! Sigh
Sorry to hear that! A buddy of mine had a similar thing happen and had to have surgery to correct it and relieve his back pain. I hope things getting sorted out and you guys are feeling better soon. Cars can always be rebuilt, but your health and comfort is of the utmost importance! I keep you guys in my prayers.
Will the 1.4 turbo flywheel work I'm sorry bro you got luck like me but your alot better of a person than me
They use the same flywheel. Only issue with the stock flywheel is it's a sprung dual mass and would eventually let go with good power. We'll get her sorted! Shit happens.
@@cmattdabrat dude you inspire me I love to watch your videos I
What do you think about a used 2011 Chevrolet Cruze 1.8lt with 43K miles for 7.4K USD? Is it worth taking the deal for a daily driver car despite their issues?
The 1.8 really doesn't have any issues. Only issues I had up until 122k and 6 years was the coolant return like, the plastic one that goes from the thermostat, to the throttle body, and the other plastic hose that goes from the throttle body to the coolant overflow tank, and the tank itself get brittle. It's a $75 fix and is easy to do. Aside from that, keep the maintenance up and it'll serve you well. I just keep throwing boost at mine until things fail.
Matt your are a tough guy. I know you will get it figure it out but in the mean time, can we change the title from low budget cruze to the money pit cruze?
Thanks! That's not a bad idea.
Do you think if the bolt holes weren't enlarged or in other words messed with. The torque specs would be okay? I have specs stage 2+, steel flywheel about to put on myself
I have their steel flywheel on the way. Looks like these are the torque specs.
26 ft lbs, 30 degrees, then 15 degrees.
@@cmattdabrat crap. I thought it seemed rather..excessive. guess il pick up some fresh bolts.
Nah not again Matt , just can't win mate. That Cruise got a curse on you. You'll get there buddy just keep going.
Definitely a lot of learning curves, but we'll get there! Even with things fully working, I'm it would only be a matter of time before something else gives in the M32 driveline, but I'm up for the challenge.
I could really use that turbo
Bad luck. The bolt holes looked to shallow. I think steel would be better keep them coming.
Thanks! I think so too.
That sticks
Too bad the GT35 probably won't fit on my Sonic RS hatchback full of ZZP and DDM works parts lol.
LOL! Just might! I take it yours in the 1.4?
@@cmattdabrat haha yes sir.
I give you props for being so leveled head about stuff breaking, I would have lost my bolt's 😂. Ps GT35 🙏
LOL! Trust me, there's been moments when I want to burn the f'er down. At that point I just have to take a step back from it until I'm more level headed.
Excited for this build! GT35
Thanks!
Gt35
Keep it coming Matt!
Thanks! Will do!
Your problem is most likely aluminum and steel. Every modern aluminum head V8 breaks exhaust bolts off the manifolds due to heat expansion stressing the studs and bolts and they constantly break the heads off. Every aluminum head with a steel manifold dose it. Dont matter if u own gm ford or dodge they all leak at the manifolds
Was the timing belt, but wont go back to an aluminum flywheel again. Even ZZP broke their bolts. Same issue with them sheering at 600whp.
Wish I could turbo my 1.8 Cruze
Gt35
Just have to put your mind to it!
Gt35 nice
Sucks bro, hopefully next go will work out, got faith in you man. GT35

Nooooooooo!!!! lol I think it's time for a lift!!! (Gt35)
That would make things so much easier on my body lol.
I wanna see this beast hit the track!!!!
Gt35
Me too! Hoping to get it sorted before the end of April and hit the 1/4 mile track her in Houston before they shut it down for good. April will be their last month after 35 years.
The more I see people hot ridding the Cruze…the less I want to hot Rod mine..sigh, I love the car..maybe I’ll put subs and make my trunk twerk instead..keep up the greatness!
Nothing wrong with having some beat!
GT35. Love the channel man
Thanks Thomas!
Gt35 turbo for me Matt!!
Nice video😎 GT35
Thanks ✌
Gt35 keep up the good work
Thank you!
Your actually riding on the tow truck 🤭
Haven't done that before, but he only had room for one person inside his rig, we just all rode together in the car lol.
Not everyone has the audacity to modify an engine like that , but when their asses are being left behind they all want to do it .
This is true.
Matt, wheres my comment gone? Not sure if you saw it or not, bit i talked about the engine you have, the ecotec and how vauxhall in the UK have the same. Is it a GM engine?
Not sure. Didn't see it before. Sometimes of find comments that are marked as spam by CZcams.
Any how. The 1.6 vxr, F18D4, z18xer, and 2H0 are the same engine, depending on displacement. The 1.6 is slightly different in the fact it doesn't have VVT and uses mechanical cams and lifters. Same block and head though.
@@cmattdabrat ok, great Z18XER is an engine number i recognise. I have a Z20LET block, but the head off a C20NE.
Anyways, what i was saying, was ive never heard of any flywheel having the problem you are, at least in the UK. Theres a company in the UK that make/produce billet flywheels (i have one on my motor with zero issues, and an eBaY turbo too), called TTV. If you search for them, TTV billet flywheel, you should be able to find the flywheel for your block with the correct bolts, though youve enlarged them now. And yes that would mean getting abother flywheel, but at least it would be correct with correct bolts and torque settings.
They also do other billet wheels like crank etc, so its worth having a look?
Also to note, and again i dont know what in your block, i have left in my balanced girdle in the block. Some guys opt to have them out.
As a precautionary measure, the clutch is correct for your gearbox/trans right? And not shaking your crank to death? Im using a Helix clutch, as they have superb clamping pressure for boosted engines....
Ive just done a search on their site for z18xer and some goodies pop up!!

Man my Cruze just went down today to 🤦🏼♂️
Yikes. Hope you get it situated. it happens.
@@cmattdabrat I always do I’ve rebuilt this engine twice now we will both get back on the road 🤟🏼
How much power does this make? It seems like a giant waste of time. You could have built 2 ls rx8s for the time and money you have spent on this bucket
LS RX8, that's original.
God damn it Matt🤣
lol
Humm In California we can’t do that
This is true. Some states are stricter than others, which isn't a bad thing.
It’s not a budget build if your keep rebuilding the motor… it’s just a money pit. Lol
Good luck brother, if it was easy, everyone would have already done it.

this is the complete history of why you should never boost your cruze 1.8 LOL
LOL! IMO, anytime you deviate from stock, issues will definitely arise.
