Welcome to Summer Grilling Week on Art of Manliness! I've teamed up with my friend Karl Engel, head chef of the award winning BBQ team Pigcasso here in Tulsa, OK, to create a series of video tutorials covering different aspects of grilling. Watch them and you'll be ready to take helm of the grill this 4th of July. Please share!
I grill my meat and vegetables on charcoal and charcoal only. I only use gas to cook rice, boil noodles or make stews outdoors. To me, nothing beats the taste of meat cooked over charcoal, wood or both combined.
To get ready for the 4th of July, watch our series of videos on outdoor grilling. We cover the difference between gas and charcoal grills, how to light a charcoal grill, how to grill a steak, how to grill burgers, and how to grill vegetables.
I have tried some of the wood pellets. Maybe I used them wrong, they gave the food a "chemically" taste to me. I prefer charcoal, but use gas for the convenience.
I only use ***** brand pellets Donald Smith because I have a Traeger grill. I have heard of this but only if you use "heating" pellets made for woods pellet stoves for heating your house. Those pellets are full of glue, binders and who knows what else from a wood shop floor where the sweep up the sawdust that the make the pellets from. Michael Neidlinger do you really not know what its is or you being sarcastic?
I use both. I have the Char Griller 50/50 with side smoker box. I mainly use the charcoal side to cook on and the gas to keep cooked food warm. Charcoal smells the best when meat juices hit them and release that wonderful scent!
I've tasted both propane and charcoal. Imho, propane is good but charcoal is much better. It just adds that awesome smokey flavor you can't get off propane.
I think the whole gas vs charcoal debate is a bit childish. As with most cooking it is the person that is making it that makes the difference. I will agree that using charcoal will get you absolutely the best flavor. However, as the guy said in the video sometimes you just don't want to have to deal with charcoal. Plus, you can smoke food on a gas grill these days. They have kits for that now. I have had steaks, burgers, and chicken on charcoal, gas, and on stove top pan. They are all good.
I have to disagree with you, I'm sorry, but as a brazilian (believe me, we do lots of barbecue down here) you may press down the meat with a spatula to check if it is still undercooked. But yeah, i think you mean that when you press it your expelling all the juices and indeed is not good, but when the meat is sealed you can do that without harming your precious meat at all (the last part sounds funny)
I grew up in a hank hill family(propane) but I pranked my dad on 4th of July by using charcoal. He said this tastes “American grown” and he glances at my grill and vomits a burger bc it was charcoal. Idk I’m allowed to host a 4th of July barbecue again.
I have both in my backyard but I prefer charcoal on lazy days were I cook for my self but if we have guests over or not enough time were using the gas tbh
The breakdown of carbon and other deposits in charcoal can provide a nice smokey flavor is grilled properly. Everyone has their own preference so just stick to what you like.
I ave always used charcoal but I need a gas drill to pan fry etc outside (my condo has lousy ventilation) and for a quick burger for lunch. Does anyone make a high quality gas grill with a pan side burner that is not huge? I will keep using charcoal for large steaks, ribs and chickens.
really it's a matter of personal preference, I've used both and haven't been disappointed. for smoking to me charcoal is the way to go, all though you can smoke with a gas grill given the right wood and the way you place the wood, it all depends on what you're cooking and the flavor that you're trying to achieve. gas, charcoal, it doesn't matter as long as you're happy with the end result.
I have a grill that has gas on one side and charcoal or wood on the other...pecan, hickory, and mesquite are pretty awesome flavors. If I had tons of money, I'd probably grill up stuff I wanted more done on low heat on the gas side, and braze it with wood or hard wood charcoal on the charcoal side...I only do that on special occasions though. I can get quite a bit of real wood flavor with wood chips on the gas side, but sometimes, steaks and burgers just need that good ole Kingsford flavor....
i can't confirm thiis, but i remember seeing on Test Kitchen that the grills that do both don't cook as well and don't really get as hot versus if you got a separate charcoal kettle and a propane grill
I've used both. I prefer gas. It's cleaner and quicker imo. I have cooked meat on gas grills that people swore I cooked it with charcoal. You just have to know how to use those wood chips to produce more flavor. Applewood is my favorite
8 People use the bastard gas Anyway....I'm a charcoal man myself. Good old mesquite or any other kind of wood. But preferably I like to use rum or whiskey infused wood on some tasty marinated meat.

you best not be living near Hank Hill cuz he would flip out.
i find wood to give the best flavour as a wood worker i have lots or scraps and cut offs too small to make into things but perfect size to burn great embers and dipending on the wood you use it gives a smoke to the wood pine oak and beech i fine give the best flavour
bamfasaurusrex deportation notice you wish bitch lmoa your stupid president can only dream of kicking us out 200 years from now your fucking race wont even exist in califonia, arizona, texas, new mexico, it will b only mexicanos pendejo!
I prefer charcoal grill but gas grill is just convenient. Why not both? Gas grill with lava rocks for weekdays. Charcoal grill with wood for weekends or during vacation.
1:14 clean? Utter nonsense. Gas is _cleaner_ than charcoal only when the flame is blue, but neither option is truly clean. So it's best to use charcoal because of the flavor it imparts to the food
LOGAN, I have both. But to answer your question for me it's keeping the smell outside. Some stuff like fish can make the house and everything in it smell like low tide long after you have enjoyed your meal. I have a range hood exterior vented but for some foods I would still rather just cook outside. That's my 2 cents ;)
Charcoal for life, you got to have that extra flavor, because that's the real way of grilling. If you're grilling with charcoal it can also help you learn patience and It'll definitely be worth your time, and if you are grilling with charcoal invite some friends over because you'll be having one of the best barbecue days of all time any time. Get off your gas and grill with charcoal
So people who cook on gas don't season their meats? This "taste the meat, not the heat" is BS unless what you're saying is that you just eat your meat plain. No seasoning. No sauce or marinades. No rubs... etc Gas users constantly use accessories like smoke boxes to try to add more flavor because gas has no flavor.
Someone who got absolutely nothing from this video. Also apparently doesn't like technological advancements because he views them as unmanly, despite using a computer to browse the internet and watch a video on grilling techniques.

wood... or wood pellets!! Love the flavor it adds to the grilled food!
I have tried some of the wood pellets. Maybe I used them wrong, they gave the food a "chemically" taste to me. I prefer charcoal, but use gas for the convenience.
What is this _propane_ that you speak of?
I like cooking on gas grills a lot better than charcoal. Veggies cooked over charcoal taste too smokey. BUT, charcoal is ok for steaks.
I tuned in to find out which one is better. And, you tell me both??? WTF???
I use both. I have the Char Griller 50/50 with side smoker box. I mainly use the charcoal side to cook on and the gas to keep cooked food warm. Charcoal smells the best when meat juices hit them and release that wonderful scent!
Grilling season? Dude, you can grill all year around!
@@TheClamy8911 same! This is my brother. I grill in michigan in the middle of winter too man.
Grilling in the winter is even better imo, the grill keeps you warm
I like you. Yep. My old buddy Greg and I would grill with snow up to our knees in a blizzard. God rest his soul. We didn’t care.
I’m in Utah, and believe me, we do grill in winter. It keeps you warm.
Propane and propane accessories...
i tell you wh'ut
Ok hank lol

where is the debate? you said it yourself that charcoal is the best. you sure do like the sound of your own voice, don't you
@@maxchan179 Reading comprehension is beyond you isn’t it.
I totally agree with you. I have both types of grills.
I have to disagree with you, I'm sorry, but as a brazilian (believe me, we do lots of barbecue down here) you may press down the meat with a spatula to check if it is still undercooked. Very helpful, quick and simple, thank you

Extra flavor? Nah you're just tasting chalky rocks fam. Taste the meat not the heat I tell ya h'wat.

Hank Trill Yep
The breakdown of carbon and other deposits in charcoal can provide a nice smokey flavor is grilled properly. Everyone has their own preference so just stick to what you like.
Zach P Is Bobby the CEO of Fruit Pies?
If you ever visit Argentina just mention you grill using gas and wait for people's reaction and looks.
You disappoint me sir.
Hank Hill "medium, Sug!"
Don't deny it, Hink Hall. Charcoal taste way better than propane. :)

You should try using small logs in a charcoal grill as opposed to charcoal. It's the best way if you have the time.
Hey I have a gas grill. Will I have to preheat before cooking hotdogs, chicken, and beef (steak and burgers)
MrKeymojax It's advisable to preheat your gas grill on high heat for more even cooking temperatures when cooking anything.
Why not have a system where you can do both? I really thought that existed by now. With the flavor of the charcoal and gas powered
i can't confirm thiis, but i remember seeing on Test Kitchen that the grills that do both don't cook as well and don't really get as hot versus if you got a separate charcoal kettle and a propane grill

bamfasaurusrex deportation notice you wish bitch lmoa your stupid president can only dream of kicking us out 200 years from now your fucking race wont even exist in califonia, arizona, texas, new mexico, it will b only mexicanos pendejo!
bamfasaurusrex Because he's from a poor country he can't afford propane. He just gets twigs and tree bark.
Charcoal is wood...
Wood isn't as clean burning as gas and you don't get the flavour as you do with charcoal. Worst of both worlds.
If Minecraft has taught me anything is that u need would to make charcoal. So it’s basically charcoal.
I use gasoline grill.
This comment is underrated! Lol
Had no idea this channel was based out of Tulsa.
Nice.
I prefer charcoal grill but gas grill is just convenient. Why not both? Gas grill with lava rocks for weekdays. Charcoal grill with wood for weekends or during vacation.
Gas Grills: Z Wings, T-Bones, Porterhouses, Tomahawks, lamb chops, burgers, sliders, chinook, chili, etc.
Charcoal smoker: Ribs, shoulders, bellies, briskets, burnt ends, picnics, poultry, etc.

I know Karl :)
Charcoal is way better for sure can't wait to move into a house again to use my grill.
Make a video on how to make hotdogs!
Hahahahaha! Yes!!
why is freddie mercury teaching me about grills?
Why not just use a microwave. That is even faster and easier than a gas grill.
+Sepah پاسداران LOL.
dont use a fukin microwave u fukin idiot. if ur a real chef u never use a microwave
Sepah پاسداران 😂!!!
Whats the point of a gas grill? Then it won't be true outside BBQ grilling! If ur gonna use gas then might as well use the fuckin stove...

If I'm going to go through all that effort, then charcoal.
It takes us 10 minutes to get the charcoal going. We use rolled up strips of news paper. No lighter fluid

+Jacob Wood And charcoal accessories?
My opinion: gas is best for large peices of meat like steak and pork chop, but charcoal is best for smaller meats like hot dogs and burgers.
Right because charcoal users generally have smaller meat
If u use gas then what's the point if u can do it inside and bring your food outside
+lol ok

CHARCOAL GRILLS FOR THE WIN!!!!!!!!
🤘Team Charcoal🤘
Try a big green egg with natural lump coal
That's why you buy a dual grill for when you don't know which one
I sell propane and propane accessories
Why do yall keep calling it a gas grill? Its outside stove
If you're going to grill out, do it right. Charcoal is the only way to go. And don't forget the wood chips!

Charcoal, enough said.
The problem I find is people who cook with gas don't know how to keep their grill properly maintained and the food tastes like propane.
Call me old fashioned, but I only grill using charcoal.
The only difference between a gas grill and your kitchen stove is that one is outside. What's the point?
Yes!
Making money selling them gas grills!
I love hank but charcoal is better
I don't mean to be at all offense, good sir, but you are not what I picture when I think "manliness"...
I can tell you never cooked with charcoal
Let's be real. Charcoal is the best flavor.
Using a gas grill is the lazy girly way to bbq man up and use charcoal
+kyle lang You ready to throw hands for saying this? Taste the meat, not the heat I tell ya h'wat.
you get zero smoke flavor in the food you cook on a gas grill

Taste the meat, not the heat so you eat raw meat ok
Wasn't there an episode where hank tried charcoal and liked it?
Not knocking the Gas, but I'm a charcoal man through and through, I will always be a charcoal man.
"Extra flavor"? No substitute for charcoal. None.
Christ man. Those burgers look more like meatballs. Dimple your meat bruh.
Just don't press down on meat with a spatula! STOP DOING THIS!
Not very scientific
Hank Hill dose not approve of this i'll tell you what
