  • @JayKayKay7
    @JayKayKay7 Před 3 lety +1

    When my kid and I were shooting a lot of service rifle; he was on the Texas CTRP Junior team and went to Perry twice with Stan Jarosz (I drove part of the team caravan and shot one year. That was a trip! With four adolescent males for a thousand miles.) Our mantra before shooting was 'He who F**ks up the least, wins."
    It wasn't about having an out of body shooting day, it was more about being at the right range at the right time on the right relay with all your equipment sorted and present. Just not trying to screw-up. (Either you have cross-fired a target or you are about to.)
    Work on that , the shooting comes along for the ride. I had on Oh God 10 shot string at my favorite 300 Rapid where I became one with time and space in the 15+ plus years of competitive shooting at local, Regional, and State Matches here in Texas. Cleaned it with 6X. Had them save me the target. I shot best in Civilian Sharpshooter class one year at the Texas State Matches, and as you know, there are some boys and girls that can shoot that call Texas home. Otherwise, I was a very solid mediocre shot. I resisted playing chase the spotter when the Texas wind kicked up, but I wasn't really very good at it. Standing was about minimizing wobble, Sitting was about technique, Rapid Prone was always my favorite. 600 yard was calling the wind. I loved the ripple of fire up and down the line, the cadence and pacing, the last lonely shot a full heartbeat after "Time" rings out and the targets sink below the berm.
    (I learned "Shoot the Dirt if you run out and still think you can get it off.")

    @Erik Cortina I have a question, not particularly related to this video. I am looking at buying some expander mandrels from 21st Century. In the video where you took the novice guy shooting you said to go .002 off the bullet diameter. Now cross referencing that to some of F-Class John's videos he says there is about a .0005 spring back in the brass (see his video about the 21st Century Mandrels). I am not sure if the .002 is the end result you like or if it's the size mandrel you are using. Also I shoot a lot of semi auto so I am not sure if that makes a difference in the amount of neck tension I would need. I want to get more than one mandrel (per caliber) to be able to experiment around a little but I am looking for a bit of help here before I fork out a few hundred bucks. Maybe 3 or 4 mandrels per caliber (if needed) would work. Again this is basing things off of the idea that expander mandrels work better for getting consistent neck tension.

    • @ErikCortina
      @ErikCortina  Před 3 lety +1

      You are over thinking it.
      Do as I told him, get a mandrel 0.002” under bullet diameter.
      Get two bushings, one 0.003” and another one 0.004” under loaded round neck diameter and experiment with those two.

    • @tyler6147
      @tyler6147 Před 3 lety

      @@ErikCortina I watched that video and I don't recall anything about a bushing. Can you please clarify? I am thinking either you mean the whole bushing die set or to put just the bushing over the neck before using the mandrel to ensure concentricity. I'm not 100% sure but I think the part about the bushings never made it to the final edit in that video.

    • @redfishslaya9501
      @redfishslaya9501 Před 3 lety +1

      You size with the bushing first. .003-.004 smaller than a loaded round. Then you open the neck up with the mandrel .002. So you end up with ..001-.002 tension after expanding.

    • @tyler6147
      @tyler6147 Před 3 lety

      @@redfishslaya9501 Ah. That makes sense. I bought some expander mandrels for one caliber (and the die for them) to experiment with. I also bought a couple of neck tension gauges from Ballistic Tools as well. I am going to play around a bit and see what I can make happen. I load a lot more calibers so buying a ton of different dies and whatnot can add up quickly. Especially now that everything is OOS and people are price gouging.

    Hi there! I am sitting here in Austria and I am very envious of you! You have such great opportunities to shoot! PRS does not exist for us. I have some questions: Why does Derek lug the tripod with him on the stage in the container and reach out with an arm under it? And: is it always possible to describe the weapon and ammunition - because we have no ideas about this sport here ... kind regards!

    • @GunFunZS
      @GunFunZS Před 3 lety +1

      I'm not competitive in this sport but I can tell you what he's doing. He's using the tripod as a way to stabilize the rear of the rifle. He's gripping his support fist on the tripod leg and resting his shooting bicep against his fist. Therefore the rear of the rifle is supported in a very stable way. A lot of these matches make things difficult by forcing into shooted awkward heights where you're a little bit off balance. Oops for example that rope support was designed to be wobbly. Anywhere he can manufacture repeatable stability is an advantage. he is basically going to be doing the same grip on his tripod and get the same support no matter where he is even if it's higher or lower on the tripod leg the angle will be the same as what he can practice at home.

    • @jarrodgreen195
      @jarrodgreen195 Před rokem

      It was a brand new barrel that hadn’t been shot yet. They typically “speed up” after 40-100 rounds or so. They can speed up anywhere from 20-100+ fps and are considered “broke in” after those rounds.

    Hey Eric - in line w/this video - my barrel is broke in and now I’m trying to use all available tools to get rounds on target in the first shot. I’m doing something wrong. All the ballistic data, environment variables, shot angle is accurate. That said 1st shot no matter the yardage is always at least 1 MIL high. Is there something obvious that I’m doing wrong? I’m a long range FNG forgive the novice question

    • @ErikCortina
      @ErikCortina  Před 3 lety +1

      Yeah, something is off. Make sure you are sighted in at 100 yards and then verify your data at long range. Adjust ballistic program to match.

      Trying to put a round into a target at distance with the wind kicking up is hard. Under 300-200 yards/meters its all about good shooting fundamentals, decent barrel and trigger and consistent ammunition. Beyond 300, reading the wind becomes all consuming and is hard to do as well knowing versus estimating distance for any particular rifle and ammo. (This won't be any fun when all you can shoot are simulated laser rifles. Think rail guns. No need to know distance or windage; damn thing flies in a straight line for its range.)
      Practice and more practice.
