When Sam Lake appears on stage, that right there is the face, the expression, the posture and the body language
of an openminded, creative, talented, yet humble man who is having the time of his life.
Imagine starting off in a small-time programming office, putting your face to the storyboards of a game that could be hit or miss, and watching it all explode and become legendary from there. Creative freedom and a fanbase that respects and enjoys that freedom is every game programmer's dream. That POTF (epic group) has grown because of the start they got from him and they work so closely to this day..... How could he NOT smile and enjoy it?
I don't mind admitting I have a bit of a man crush on Sam Lake, such a cool dude. And the whole team behind AW2, such an awesome experience. I had voted almost across the board for AW2 at the game awards. I was kind of disappointed the game did not get game of the year.

I think it's funny how the actor of Alan Wake himself AND the voice actor are both on stage, not just hiding the voice in the back and having the actor take all the spotlight.

@@florentwernert Hey! I can actually confirm he is the nicest guy from the gaming industry I've ever met. And I've met a few, Gabe Newell was about as socially awkward as you'd expect, he was nice though, but Sam Lake was a gem, showed us around the studio in Finland, that's while they were making what would become American Nightmare. Maybe not so much now, but back then you could show up at their studio and they would give you a tour, I think given their recent success they might change that rule.

This had to be one of the best nights of Sam Lake's life, being handed multiple awards and getting to do his silly dance on-stage to applause.
And the awards that they got were specifically the ones rewarding his personal work (story and direction at least, but he surely also had his hands in the art direction department). This man is a genius, creates outstanding experiences with his team and I‘m so happy he got rewarded for it.
this very silly dance that he also has to fight for just so he can keep this segment in the game. sam lake is truly the real winner in 2023 gaming
I loved the performance, but seeing the giant grin on Sam’s face is my favorite part. He fought to keep that sequence in the game, and fought for the game itself, and seeing people celebrate the things he believed so fiercely in is so wonderful

Gotta give a shoutout to Matthew Porretta who voices Alan Wake and sings his lines here. The dude has such raw charisma in Control and he can't be stopped. If you haven't played Control yet, play Control. Like Alan Wake 2, it's made with real love and respect.
I just finished the main game. The first hours were kinda difficult because I was so lost; nothing was making much sense, but after you start gaining control (pun intended), it is marvelous, the best combat in any game that I have experienced. Also, the story is so weird and mysterious that you want to keep going to understand more. Now I'm looking forward for the expansions!

@@StefanNorlin Yeah I'm not sure about the actors, but the Poets of the Fall guy visibly (audibly?) was singing live. You can hear some obvious imperfections in his vocals that I actually really appreciate - because of them I'm pretty sure at least his singing was live. Also his voice sounds differenly from the rest, the reverb on it and all also makes it sound live. Music - I'm pretty sure it wasn't.
@@domoslaf Everybody singing is mic'd up, cant imagine them going through the trouble of doing that for playback, but yeah, the bass player consistantly stops playing, but the bass keeps going.
There's also the fact that the drums are perfect despite the fact that their Keyboard player is the one that plays Tor lol

Anyone who knows anything about Finland knows the slighty mad and crazy, energetic spirit, as well as the top quality rock and metal music. This is honestly the greatest way to put Finland on the gaming map!! Sam Lake is a true legend

@@traceretsu no Remedy almost got shut down like 2 times after max payne 2. first when alan wake didnt sell as well then when quantum dream experiment crashed and burned. thats why it took the success of control to even get alan wake 2.

I don’t know what’s more nutty, the fact they put a musical in the show, they got both the dub and actor for Alan to be there, or the fact Sam Lake is in on it too like the game doing absolute banger moves

Then just mixed them all, some parts felt musical but other few parts felt like a play

He also the face and voice of Dr Darling in control who shows up in Alan Wake during new game +, so he’s pretty involved with remedy. And I he sings a full song in control as well.
This wouldn’t have happened without him there. Clearly AW actual actor can’t do anything except make faces.
People have to understand how important of a moment this is to Sam Lake... 13 years ago he was unable to go ahead and produce AW2, if I remember correctly the game didn't sold that much, so it was put aside.
Watching this I was crying tears of joy for him, look at how happy he is! Congrats to him, congrats to everyone involved!
Plus reading up on it microsoft held the rights to Alan Wake but they paid a 2.5 million Euro royalty fee and then partnered with Epic . Good for them. The deserve the success
It actually did relatively well and they've wanted to do a sequel for years. The problem is that they partnered with Microsoft to get the first game made and in doing so Microsoft owned Alan Wake. They tried to pitch a sequel for it to Microsoft and that lead to the creation of Quantum Break. When they separated from Microsoft, they no longer had access to Alan Wake and while they wanted to make a sequel (which is what lead to Control) they weren't allowed.
They were finally able to buy the rights to Alan Wake in 2019 and started developing Alan Wake 2 soon after.
There are actually recent interviews with Ilkka Villia where he said that ever since the first game he'd be contacted regularly by Sam asking if he wanted to do another Alan Wake game lol He'd always say yes and it seemed to always fall through.
@@moonlitxangel5771I thought Alan wake didn’t get enough in terms of copies sold and revenue but as the years passed it became successful out of blue and that led it being a cult classic which Sam acknowledges and very much appreciated anyways no offence but I pick Alan wake 2 over quantum break since Alan wake has a more lasting experience than quantum break and Sam really wanted to make Alan wake 2 since the beginning but for some reason Microsoft doesn’t allow that and to be honest the story would be a lot different compared to Alan wake two because of sweet baby inc not being involved.
@@cantsuggestareasonablename9101 Considering it was an Xbox timed exclusive (which was a stupid move on Microsoft's part) that came out at the same time as a AAA game, it did fairly well. It sold over a million copies its first year and each subsequent year sold a million more for a good few years.
In terms of why Microsoft wouldn't let them - they owned Remedy at the time and wanted them to diversify. After Remedy broke away from Microsoft it was about fighting them for the rights to Alan Wake.

I hope this convinces Poets of the Fall to finally start releasing physical copies of their music in America. I've been a fan of their music since high school in the early 2010's, but unfortunately could never get my hands on any of their CDs because they're not sold in the US (not unless you want to pay a hefty import fee, anyway).
Sam Lake looks like the happiest man on earth in the ending moment. Culmination of hard work, well deserved for him and the studio for crafting a wonderful story and an unexpected rock opera
For a studio that's very much been an underdog in the AAA environment, Remedy really deserved this and everything else they won. Sam lake is wonderful, Remedy is wonderful, Alan Wake 2 is wonderful!
I couldn't agree more. Their games have always had a very special place in my heart (Both because they are so unique in their identities AND because Remedy's studio is literally a bus ride away from my apartment lmao), so I've always been really sad when their games have underperformed financially. I really hope Alan Wake 2 made all the money it could, because not only is it a BRILLIANT game, it really shows what Remedy is capable of, when they are given proper funding and time for a project. Control was such an awesome game, but even that game suffered from budget and time-constraints (It was in development hell for years).
I really wish I bump into Sam Lake someday so I can thank him and his team at Remedy for their work on these absolute gems of games. There truly aren't any games like them out there.

I want them to succeed, but I feel if they want to make more money, release it for physical one day
@@gamerlordthebest I'm not at all sure about the claim that "most people tend to buy physical copies" - digital downloads have been by far the main mode of game distribution for the last ten years. For PC games, I can't remember the last physical, boxed game I bought (and even then, the last one I bought didn't even actually include the game installation on the disk - it was just a redirect to steam for download). I'm not a console gamer, but even on console, most people still download their games rather than buying physical copies (and like the PC games that don't actually contain the game installation on disk, even the console games on physical disk often just end up leading to digital downloads, not off-line physical installations). So I don't think not having a physical option is going to hurt AW2 much, if at all.
Larian Studios also isn't one of the 'big' studios. So the fact BG3 and AW2 dominated the awards has to be a wake up call.
Remedy is an aaa studio
The fanbase spoke it into existence, and it happened! Thank you Alan Wake!

I'm glad BG3 won. It's one of my picks alongside TOTK, Spider-Man 2 and AW2 due to their interesting and awesome plotlines. Honestly, I love all nominees, save for for Starfield cuz I haven't checked it out yet (some said its story is basically Fallout in space, though I would like to see it myself so I can't judge it yet). But yeah, many game devs really cooked well this 2023.
Edit: I guess my comment pissed off a RE4 fan. Sorry but I ain't comparing them cuz they're special in their own ways. Tribalism is awful as hell.

@@labret2Tell me you haven’t played AW 2 without telling me you haven’t, or I guess it could come across as generic if the complex narrative (a postmodern one at that) went over your head. The game is technically a multimedia project. It blends a few different types of art into it without sacrificing gameplay rather seamlessly blending them into the game.
Gotta say this: Matthew Porretta should have appeared at the end of the video, he learned the choreography just for the event and he dances along at the end - you barely see him dancing here, but you can see that on "people's reaction" videos of this marvelous performance. Other than that, Sam Lake's "Ocean Smile says everything! Well earned awards!
I saw the Awards without playing the game... I remember saying to myself "wtf"... Now that I am playing it, I cannot stop with listening to this masterpiece!

One of the best uses of dynamic music I've ever played. Pending on how you play it in game, the songs runtime is much longer. Also, every game chapter closes with a nondynamic song. Songs very much written for this game, lyrics & all.
@@kneau The way you experience it in the game is honestly one of the finest segments in gaming and one of the finest pieces of media put to the screen. I really can't describe how little justice is done to the actual gameplay segment when you're just watching a music video or the live performance, and I LOVE the music video and this live performance lol.

This might be a little dramatic but when Sam popped up on stage I had a bit of tears in my eyes. Been a fan of him since his MP character of MP1 when I was still a kid and now to see him still going strong and having this well-deserved moment gives me joy.

I have waited days for the game awards because I knew Poets of the fall, Sam lake, Ilkka Villi, Matthew Poretta, and David Harewood would be there. So happy they got to perform this. What a great way to end the year. Congrats poets for making it back to the US and Congrats to everyone else on winning so many awards for Alan wake 2

aw2 had a few incredible standout songs - namely this and Dark Ocean Summoning, but i'd definitely say bg3 was more consistently incredible and iconic with their score in a more traditional sense.
Hi-Fi Rush has incredible soundtrack too, that was tough battle.
Hi-Fi Rush is basically a rhythm fighting game, so it needed good music (which it has, OSTs this year have been amazing) @@FlynnFromTaiga

Sam Lake truly is one of the most awesome people out there. Standing on stage in Los Angeles with Broadway stars and a rock band, in front of an audience of the best game developers on the planet, doing a silly dance he pushed to incorporate in a psychological/survival horror game. Absolute mad lad.
He looks like he's having the time of his life, and I don't blame him for a nanosecond. His happiness is so contagious, and he (they all do!) deserves this so so much.

Couldn’t be happier that Poets of the fall performed this at the show. I walked down the aisle to one of their songs. They deserve all the attention and praise.
I’d never even heard of Poets of the Fall until I played Alan Wake on Backward compatibility (not even when it was released) but when I heard War I was sold. Then I found out the Old Gods of Asgard were the same band. I do have a good ear for music and styles so I recognised the voice and Guitar from Poet and the Muse and Childten of the Elder God being the same as War. So then delved deeper and found this amazing band. Now I’m a big fan but I’m constantly disappointed how they aren’t more recognised because they have some brilliant songs in their repertoire like Lift, Carnival of Rust, No end, No beginning, The Game and possibly the best “not a Bond song but should be” My Dark Disquiet (also featured in Control). And they continue to put out albums and great songs. This made me really happy. Hopefully the Poets get the global recognition they deserve now. I also hope they do this for the BAFTA game awards. 😀

absolute best part to me.. has to be that when everyone joins in for the final dance portion, you can hear David and Matthew singing along. Knowing their history in stage productions, they probably memorized the song to help keep the motions in time, but still.
I love Harewood, not just for his Mental Health advocacy, and I can not wait until the next time we see Mr. Door.

Been a huge fan of theirs since their song on Max Payne 2. Im so happy to see them perform here and hope this opens doors (pun intended) for them to perform more in the US and Canada

@criztiuca yeah, I got their albums on release, but haven't seen them live cause I live in the US lol
I would love this, but unfortunately with them being an independent band, they have said they don't perform much here in the states because the travel money comes out of their own pockets (and not from a record label). This includes their instruments, equipment, merch and other things. So if they travel to a far away place like the states, they have to be sure they will draw in an audience enough to pay the bills for their travels. Hopefully this performance exposed them to more people in the USA, and this makes more folks aware of them, for this to become a reality.
