Revisiting the Carenado Cessna 170B in Microsoft Flight Simulator

  • Following the update to the Cessna C170B by Carenado this week, I thought we might take it up for a flight. The flight dynamics are definitely a lot more fun now - and landing smoothly is quite the challenge. I can definitely see some time reading the pilot operating handbook, and practicing approaches will help now. It's a very simple aircraft, but it's still tremendously good fun.

I have flown the real deal 170 and the 180 models. This update has really improved all around. Ground handling is much better, the flight dynamics is spot on to the real one. Landings are always tricky in the real C170...airspeed is very important on touchdown. The older version was not easy to trim, but the new one is . KUDO'S to the DEV on the update. Much more enjoyable to fly. Great video my friend as always.

Great feedback - good to know that the update has brought it in line with the real thing :)

Engine sound used to be great before update, now it is really excellent. Wish Carenado will continue with substantial updates.

I'm sure they will (eventually) :)

A friend of mine, world famous aerial photographer William Garnett of Napa (RIP), used to take me and his buddy up in his cherished brushed aluminum 170 out of Napa's airport which was a rare treat. He rarely took guests up, other pilots at Napa airport's restaurant and lounge used to tell us, but because me and my buddy were accomplished local photographers, he allowed us to fly over the North Bay's mud flats and Napa's Vineyards he was well known for taking pictures of for Life Magazine and National Geographic.
So I love Carenado's 170 and most of my flights in it are around Napa, despite my learning to fly two decades later, in '06, out of Phoenix's Falcon Field under light sport's fixed wing and trike rules.
The 170 being a taildragger is like the Luscombe 8A I once was given the treat to pilot out of a grass strip in PA, Pegasus, near Stroudsburg. I wish there were a Luscombe for Xbox for MSFS, in real life they are well harmonized despite requiring an "Armstrong" start which I performed for my friend's Luscombe, on a qtr pull and as a bonus, I was able to keep my arm as a souvenir (I was well coached on how to avoid losing it).
Once again, it is nice to see your review of this aircraft, which raises memories of it I enjoyed four decades ago with William Garnett.

This is probably my favourite bush plane - mainly because it has proper articulating suspension.
It's the way it settles down onto the suspension when you make a good bush landing - feels so satisfying!

For sure I notice when aircraft do and don’t have this and I really don’t enjoy flying ones that don’t. For instance the Cessna citation that comes with the sim. It has like zero suspension and I have barely flown it due to this.

This was my first MSFS payware (was always a fan of Carenado in FSX) and I had kind of forgotten it. Your vid inspired me to update it and give it another go. It really is quite wonderful, and suits my GA + short flights (time poor!). The default paints with it are also outstanding!

hi John been flying the 170 and working on landings I find a smooth landing in this plane will work if you get the stall warning on just before touch down about 40 mph it's seems to work for me for a nice landing with out bouncing it

The sound is improved. That's the only thing I didn't like about it. It's a very relaxing aircraft to fly.

I keep getting this bug with Carenado aircraft where the engine/prop sound changes when you change the view.. Does anyone have a fix for this? It's very annoying.

    • @jonbeckett
      @jonbeckett  Před 10 měsíci

It may be a bug. I had the WBSim 152 installed for a short while - it messed the sound up of every aircraft until I removed it - you might have something similar going on.

  • @Ngamer834

Something I am not keen on with FSrealistic is when starting a flight sometimes the plane will bounce momentarily and make a noise. Yeah it can also make a not so good landing look much worse sometimes.

I like even the Bolts Head airport and custom sorrounding. Do you know it? It is my favoured airport in UK. This despite the fact thst I have all BBD / ORBX airports. It'is do nice there, seems the real one ( there is a video of the real one on flying reporter).
