They basically sold him on the opportunity to compete to be the starter and he felt like it was the right opportunity. He looked at Baker Mayfield's opportunity last year and felt that this could be something similar.
Daniel Jeremiah on Giants rumors:
I believe Drew Lock has a really good shot of winning that job. They were comparing Daniel Jones and Drew Lock - emphasis on Drew Lock - to the QBs that were going to be there (in the draft) and I think the line for them was Drake Maye.

From the Giants quarterback situation for the 2024 season, I think Drew Lock is the wild card in the equation. Remember, both Drew and Daniel were both high picks in the same draft. Daniel was a first round pick while Drew was mocked to the first round but slipped and was taken early in the second round by Denver. Actually going into that draft, I was more hoping the Giants would draft Drew Lock than Daniel Jones. I don't know why Drew failed in Denver. Maybe it was a lack of good coaching or good supporting cast. I'm not sure. Last year, in Seattle, when Geno Smith was injured, Drew played very well. Since Brian Daboll is known for having success working with quarterbacks, I'm curious to see what he does with Drew. I think Drew Lock will get his opportunity to play and we'll see whether or not he makes the most of it.
exactly right (imo) Often times people are too quick to give up on young QBs 'cause so much is expected of them right away. You know Daboll is thinking..... we may be able to do something with this kid. I think it was a smart signing.
I played QB for the Black n Gold Falcons in NYC back in the 70's I'm 64 now and I'm pretty sure I could beat "DJ n DL" for the starting QB

I think daniel jones was given his opportunity last year. He failed. He is injury prone and the numbers show he is not a good quarterback. I think its time giants move on.

If Giants want to get the most value out of Nabors and Hyatt, Lock is the best chance for more targets and better deep throw accuracy. The issue with Lock that has haunted him in his career is again, he is a gunslinger. Creates a lot of turnovers. But doesn't throw interceptions like Daniel Jones does whether that's throwing a pass to a defensive lineman on a screen pass or trying to throw the ball out of bounds and throws it right to the CB on the sideline.

I’m not saying that I want Daniel Jones as our quarterback I’m saying if it’s between Drew Lock and Daniel Jones healthy, then I’ll pick up Daniel Jones 😅
If there comes a point in the season where it's obvious the Giants won't make the playoffs, it would make sense for the Giants to take out Jones and put in Lock so that he can get some reps. Also, it keeps Jones healthy and helps the Giants avoid the $23M salary guarantee for 2025. However, this move will tip their hand, that they will be drafting a new QB1 in next year's draft. But if Jones doesn't improve upon his performance from 2022 (not 2023), then it's fair to say he's not going to develop into their franchise QB.
I want Daniel Jones to start if he is healthy and rise or die on his shield. I am comfortable with Drew Lock starting if necessary, and I hope they keep Tommy DeVito on the roster; that kid is pretty good.

if Jones is healthy, he's starting. doesn't mean he remains the starter if he's terrible but its a near lock ;) that Jones will start game 1.
Let’s see what he can do. I also want to see how good DeVito looks coming back in year 2. Devito had an 8/3 TD/Int ratio. There were times he moved the ball efficiently. Taylor looked really good at the end of the year.

DL because he is better able to stretch the field and better equipped to make use of Giants weapons. More of a pure quarterback who has learned from past failures, which is a major character win.

DJ needs to stay healthy, utilize his weapons that he now has and most importantly, produce good football. Win games, some we may not be expected to win. Not necessarily win a playoff berth, there are still some stacked teams, but not be embarrassed out of any games like Dallas did to us last year.

Can’t understand this front office and what direction they’re really trying to go in. Neither one of these QBs have shown much in their careers so far. Penix, Nix and Travis was there and they picked a WR mind boggling being that these two QBs are subpar.
Honestly, I will rather have Drew lock starting for a couple games because when he was in Seattle, he was giving a bunch of targets to Jackson Smith Njigba he was giving him the ball a lot and me personally I don’t think Daniel would give him the ball that much. I think he would overlook him or hold onto the ball too long or overthrow him like basically Daniel don’t really know how to use his weapons correctly not saying that he should give that person the ball all the time but I think Drew Locke understands a lot more that this is what you do this is how you win games But that is just how I feel

They said Jones won't be back for the first 3-5 games from the ACL injury. So Lock would be the better QB.
110% make it a competition.....however, you forgot one. Tommy DeVito should be competing as well. Competition will drive these 3 QBs to all play better. Im not saying who should start week 1, that should be determined by the Competition. The best player, the one that works the hardest and performs the best, will start.
I understand having good competition at camp, but I’m not sure the giants management is just quite ready to sit the QB they paid BIG last offseason. Knowing how the Mara family usually leans, DJ will only lose the starting spot this season if he consistently executes poorly OR gets injured. Just my 2 cents.

I'm sure that Jones will be given every opportunity to be the starter but of course him being ready for September cannot be guaranteed. So by necessity the Giants do have to prepare Lock to start the season. I would bet that Daboll thinks he can make Lock a better QB than he has been so far. what does he need to do in order to not get cut at the end of next season? I think as a fan base, we are having Daniel Jones fatigue. The new management needs to find their new guy and leave this era of Giants Football behind us. Even if DJ makes it to the NFC Conference Finals, it will still have that David Gettlemen taste to it that will make the appearance feel a bit bitter.
I’m ready for the new era in Giants football and with Saquon out, it makes the rebuild process that much easier.
