  • In this Oxford-style debate, Professors Ernesto Dal Bó and Dean Rich Lyons speak from the stakeholder point of view; Professors Hayne Leland and David Vogel champion shareholders.
This is an Oxford-style debate for the purpose of academic learning. The faculty were assigned points of view that they may not necessarily agree with for the debate. These points should not be quoted or attributed to the faculty member in any way. (September 08, 2010)
The University of California Berkeley Haas School of Business is one of the world's leading producers of new ideas and knowledge in all areas of business - which includes the distinction of having two of its faculty members receive the Nobel Prize in Economics over the past 15 years. The school offers six degree-granting programs. Its mission is to develop innovative business leaders - individuals who redefine how we do business by putting new ideas into action, and who do so responsibly. The school's distinctive culture is defined by four key principles - question the status quo; confidence without attitude; students always; and, beyond yourself.

Wow. The debate was interesting. Lesson learnt is that profit maximization is not wrong provided its within ethical and legal boundaries. However, the lack of conciseness in ethics makes it difficult to have a standard base to execute decisions.

What is an example of a firm depleting an asset that belongs to Society? He said that this would be an example of theft for the shareholders.

David Vogel seems to answer the students questions in a fuzzy logic way. A sign of not being able to answer or not willing to explain the obvious? Very interesting otherwise.
