Thanks for giving me a shoutout! I want to add that the apparent Katla uplift was a fairly convincing false positive. Fooled me and a bunch of other geologists proved it was just a coincidental false positive due to significant icing on the sensor effecting data for several days straight. That said, Katla & Grimsvotn are 2 volcanoes with ongoing slow uplift which will eventually erupt. Although a person cannot truly predict eruptions, I made an educated guess for 2022 that 5 volcanoes might erupt and correctly guessed 3 of them. For 2023 I am fairly confident that Grimsvotn might erupt.

    • @JustIcelandic
      @JustIcelandic  Před rokem +8

Iv'e got Grímsvötn wrong at least 2 times :) but since I'm not a geologist, I can allow my self to approach this my own way, even from the horses mouth :) I'm however focusing more at the Askja region now, something got me going with this idea that it might be next, but then, at least it's exciting to have this hobby in this country :)

@@JustIcelandic edit: I did not mean to imply that your predictions were wrong or bad! Comment wording came out wrong. Accidentally said “you” instead of “a person” cannot predict a volcano long term. No one can, not even me or other volcanologists. With this being said, much of your analysis/predictions do have a lot of evidence and thought put into them and are quite sound. Glad we agree on Grimsvotn erupting soon than later. :)
      I enjoy your content.

Although Askja is relatively active It would be a pleasant surprise if another volcano in the same zone (maybe a little known shield volcano?) erupted. Btw feel free to email me at tccatron@asu.edu. I could not find your business email, and think that if I am ever in Iceland again that we should directly collaborate.

@@JustIcelandic models suggest that Grimsvotn follows a somewhat cyclical pattern based off of released seismic energy. It has passed a threshold meaning it has the potential to erupt in the next year.

What I find funny is that after Eyjafjallajökull the french-german tv station ARTE published a documentary called "Island - Wann droht der nächste Ausbruch?" (= "Iceland - When is a new eruption imminent") and not only was it right about Grimsvötn erupting the soonest (2011) but also mentioned Askja, Katla and Hekla as likely follow-ups. The fact that it's still up-to-date is genuinely amazing to me.

It's very fascinating to see the bigger picture here. I hope though that you won't get too worried and get not enough sleep if you keep checking the data every few hours. Behind this is a question whether the perceptions and expectations about ever more possibly catastrophic eruptions in preparation and other seismic events could in part be influenced by simply having a lot more data now. I wouldn't be surprised if Iceland has now a multiple of the number of sensors spread all over the place than it was the case, say, 50 years ago.

Looking at the plot of earthquakes all the way along the plate boundaries, I cant help but think that maybe the plates are just moving apart right across Iceland. I suppose the nightmare scenario then would be that a number of volcaoes "decide" to erupt at the same time. (I'm not a volcanologist either but putting 2 and 2 together to make 5)

It would be interesting to have some collaboration with some of them, especially since they do put out data and tools that you and others use. And, you bring your stunning videography, field experience, and style to the table.
Regardless, it looks like Iceland is going to keep you on your toes for the foreseeable future. Hopefully, not doing anything devastating.
I do have a couple of questions or ideas. First, how common is it for more than one volcano to erupt there, and what is the highest number in recent history to have erupting at the same time?
Second, how do the animals react to the eruptions and quakes, and what do/did people do to prepare or evacuate animals in these situations?

The scientists bang on about climate change but these volcanoes when they erupt are the Earths natural cooling mechanisms that are never factored into any climate models, especially when we know the patterns of eruptions of so many volcanoes they should incorporate these into the climate models so we can plan for the cooling events when they come like now because of the Tonga eruption. The weather in the UK has been really warm going into the autumn but these next 2 weeks the way the temperature is dropping steadily day by day is telling me we could have a long winter of temperatures remaining below zero for consecutive months here in the UK so it could be a real bad one in Iceland. I remember you showing a horse shoe shape carving of a cliff by water that no geologists have explained i hope there are some videos recording the path of melt waters if there is an eruption so we can see what we are actually dealing with when something like this happens it would be a real shame if we just see the aftermath of the huge flood if one does happen...

I really can't say :) nor can I say if it ands up with an explosion, might just erupt and I say it's 50/50 that we get an eruption within a year

This volcano eruption is the isometric projection event of the 1973 eruption, so most likely will erupt in January 2023

We was in Iceland last week for new year , on the 2nd at 15.40 we heard the effects of the 2.3 earthquake at katla , at the time we was standing on the bridge at Seljalandsfoss water fall when all the large iceickes at the top started cracking , we didn’t think anything of the time , only that 2 idiot tourists were standing underneath, breaking the rules as the path behind the fall was closed for safety , it was only when I cross referenced the photo time and the earthquake time they were the same time

Well of all 7 went up at one time it would create an ice age that last 40 thousand years. And last time that happened was when Greenland used to be were Iceland is now.

The title sounds almost “apocalyptic “.... Hope you never have seven go off at once, especially since I just recently viewed from your files an eruption from 1973 I believe from an Island off the coast of Iceland that did major damage and caused huge evacuations. And that was from one volcano.... 7 reminded me of the use of it by God. It was used often by Him. For instance,He created in six “days” the heavens earth and all therein and rested the 7th to start the cycle of “weeks” for humankind. This is recorded in Genesis and the final book of the Bible (Revelation) records many uses of 7 in relation to God; 7 thunders, 7 angels, 7 seals, 7 trumpets, 7 golden vials, etc... It has been linked to His judgements at times, such as 7 years of famine or 7 years of drought. Just thought I would share as I know God is in control of all things even if many think He isn’t. He does let us go our own ways though without considering Him...at least for a while. Iceland is a beautiful country and I pray for its people as I do for those where I live now. Thanks for all your work!
