- Seismic unrest all over our island makes it hard for me to pinpoint any one single volcano to erupt next, but this is however a good overview where i explain the currant situation, and check my links for more.

Thanks for giving me a shoutout! I want to add that the apparent Katla uplift was a fairly convincing false positive. Fooled me and a bunch of other geologists proved it was just a coincidental false positive due to significant icing on the sensor effecting data for several days straight. That said, Katla & Grimsvotn are 2 volcanoes with ongoing slow uplift which will eventually erupt. Although a person cannot truly predict eruptions, I made an educated guess for 2022 that 5 volcanoes might erupt and correctly guessed 3 of them. For 2023 I am fairly confident that Grimsvotn might erupt.
Iv'e got Grímsvötn wrong at least 2 times :) but since I'm not a geologist, I can allow my self to approach this my own way, even from the horses mouth :) I'm however focusing more at the Askja region now, something got me going with this idea that it might be next, but then, at least it's exciting to have this hobby in this country :)
@@JustIcelandic edit: I did not mean to imply that your predictions were wrong or bad! Comment wording came out wrong. Accidentally said “you” instead of “a person” cannot predict a volcano long term. No one can, not even me or other volcanologists. With this being said, much of your analysis/predictions do have a lot of evidence and thought put into them and are quite sound. Glad we agree on Grimsvotn erupting soon than later. :)
I enjoy your content.
@@JustIcelandic as for Askja I was honestly surprised that the Iceland Met Office lowered the alert level.
Although Askja is relatively active It would be a pleasant surprise if another volcano in the same zone (maybe a little known shield volcano?) erupted. Btw feel free to email me at tccatron@asu.edu. I could not find your business email, and think that if I am ever in Iceland again that we should directly collaborate.
@@JustIcelandic models suggest that Grimsvotn follows a somewhat cyclical pattern based off of released seismic energy. It has passed a threshold meaning it has the potential to erupt in the next year.
Your videos are so wonderful giving us a guide to the flavour of these different volcanoes so we know their stories. Otherwise they would just be a string of words to us!
Thanks a lot :) update soon
Iceland is much more than volcanoes, I know, but I was a sucker for the last "tourist" eruptions , and will be again!!
Thank you, thank you, thank you for these videos! I’ve been watching for over a year now and get really excited each time you release a new one! The quality is top notch and you’re an excellent narrator. 😊
Thank you so much, very much appreciated 😊
Love the horse!! Thank you for the report. The volcanoes are becoming very interesting all over the earth. Worth watching..especially Iceland for several reasons. Have learned a lot from you. Appreciate the teaching and the beautiful scenery.
It is so nice to hear from you again and yes I also wonder witch volcano will be the first to start erupting. I hope it will be in a remote aria so the people of Iceland will be safe. Thank you for the work you put in to make these video's and maybe soon you hear more from the scientists and share it with us. Thanks again and greatings, be safe!
Thanks a lot, they can't keep quiet for much longer as the Askja unrest is growing again, and greetings from Iceland :)
OMG that horse! Hahaha, thank u! I needed that giggle today!
Welcome :)
Another excellent video. Thanks for posting it. Will be watching closely to see what happens in Iceland.
Thank you :)
SEVEN! And not one dwarf amongst them! I keep watching the batches of swarms coming in, so many shallow across most of these, and I keep thinking, which one of these straws is going to break the camels back...Christmas seems a long way off, I think we will have an early surprise.
Wow! Things really seem to be heating up, no pun intended.
Thanks for an informative, well-reasoned video.
Thank you :)
Another amazing video! The time and effort you put into this is much appreciated and I want you to stay safe so you can keep making them! Thank you from Canada!
Thanks a lot, apreciated :)
my best wishes to you and your country
Thank you :)
Thank you very much for these important updates, and the wonderful photographic documentation!
Welcome
It is wonderful to hear your excitement. I am anxious to see what magnificent landscape mother nature has in store.
Thank you :)
Well done. Loved the map at 6:40 that revealed the earthquake map at 6:45. I know you love living with in spitting distance of the Arctic Circle, Gylfli. With 11 active volcanic areas, I'd be considering a move to a craton somewhere. Stock up on batteries, have fun, and don't walk on the lava. 😉
Thank You so much for the update. Always enjoyable and informative. Luv the Icelandic Horse smile! 😅 Lots of volcanic activity on your beautiful island. 🇮🇸💕 The video / graphics are great and very clear, as is your commentary. I hope that you are there, at a safe distance, to witness whichever volcano decides to 'let off steam and lava first'. Very exciting but worrying too for people living in the area. Stay safe. 🌋🙏
Thank you so much and greetings from Iceland 🇮🇸💕 working on the Christmas Special now :)
@@JustIcelandic Great! Looking forward to it! Stay safe around those volcanoes. 🌋🇮🇸💐
Just had a 5.6 quake under Lake Taupo in the central North Island in New Zealand today. It's been a bit rumbly for a while now - now if that decides to go...
Wow, got a lot of crazy stuff going on up there.Wonderful to hear from you. Hope everything is well with you and the family. Look forward to the next one.
Another really interesting video, with your lovely voice, Gylfi! I was amused when the subtitle person translated "plate boundaries" into "plate pantries"!
👍 always welcome :)
Good to hear that you are back. Excellent explanation. Stay safe and healthy.
Thanks a lot :)
Thank you once again. Every time you put up a video it's a must watch for me.
Thanks a ton :) great to have you around
Extraordinary. Your knowledge, analysis, humour and fabulous footage is such a treat to "tune-in" to.
Thank-you. Like you, we await developments ...... !!!
Wow, thank you so much :)
Please take care and thank you for sharing 🙏👍❤️
Welome🌋
Thank you fopr the update, Gylfi! Wow, Iceland is dancing into 2023!
Yes 2023 will be something for sure, will make a forecast early in the new year :)
Thanks again, I watch because of your infinite skill at getting such beautiful landscape and volcanic videos, if your Geology is as good I’ll start holding tight! Keep safe
Exciting 😅❤️🤍💙
Always action in Iceland :)
Ready the drones. Will be some great footage I’m sure. Stay safe.
All batteries charged and ready :)
Your videos are so informative. Thank you so much for making them.
Good grief seven volcanos ready to go up on one island, just imagine if it all happens together, one goes and triggers the rest that's scary, I'm sure it won't happen, but, please be ready for anything.
Interesting thank you for your very welcome posts.
Thanks 😍
Wow, so many volcanos seem to be ready to erupt! Exciting and scary at the same time. Thanks for the great update!
Welcome :)
There has been an increase of seismic actvity around the planet lately,so its no surprise the volcanoes are showing signs of unrest. But 11 systems now in unrest.
What I find funny is that after Eyjafjallajökull the french-german tv station ARTE published a documentary called "Island - Wann droht der nächste Ausbruch?" (= "Iceland - When is a new eruption imminent") and not only was it right about Grimsvötn erupting the soonest (2011) but also mentioned Askja, Katla and Hekla as likely follow-ups. The fact that it's still up-to-date is genuinely amazing to me.
I still miss Bob! .
He will be back sooner than later
...and even Nar has gone quiet🌋
Looks like volcanoes and quakes are alive and kickin , signs of the times.
Yes it's so strange I must say..
Do you have a divers mini spare air tank and respirator ?
It might be a good idea to keep one in your car incase you are caught in a toxic outgassing.
All the best

🇮🇸 welcome
In the last televised eruption that closed European air travel we were very concerned for the people of Iceland and what procedures were in place for evacuation and care of their needs. As you live daily on potential powder kegs how do Icelanders prepare for the worst case scenarios?
thank you very much for those last updates
Welcome
The horse looks like they are wearing a wig. What a pose. 😁😍
Great vid as always
Thanks :)
Fascinating!
Welcome :)
Askja... didn't that come up in conversation recently?
I've sent word to my interested colleague that their focus of study might be awakening, waiting on a reply.
With all those systems rocking and rolling, I sure hope everyone around them can get away quickly should they start erupting... particularly Askja... stay safe, my friend.
Sorry for late reply my friend, I got stuck in editing, hyper focused for 3 weeks straight, but you might like my new update, looks similar as Askja in some ways...I mean Kleifarvatn by Reykjavik...
Great! Thanks.
Welcome :)
Absolutely great footage, thank you so much. Never a dull on Iceland! Is the history of the large caldera known, when did it last erupt? It must have been devastating.
Hopefully these volcanoes will not harm anyone if they do wake up. That is a very large number of them that is showing signs of unrest.
Today Taupo in NZ had an earthquake so it is showing unrest too, which is rather disturbing. So many volcanoes waking up.
let us hope for a calm future in our countries...

Could be good!
This will be something....
Thank you
Welcome :)
It's very fascinating to see the bigger picture here. I hope though that you won't get too worried and get not enough sleep if you keep checking the data every few hours. Behind this is a question whether the perceptions and expectations about ever more possibly catastrophic eruptions in preparation and other seismic events could in part be influenced by simply having a lot more data now. I wouldn't be surprised if Iceland has now a multiple of the number of sensors spread all over the place than it was the case, say, 50 years ago.
Ever entertained the idea the entire island is one gigantic volcano??
Well, it actually is :)
Thanks for the video man. It’s interesting to see that so many volcanoes are getting ready. Could there be 2 eruptions at the same time? What do you think?
2 eruptions at the same time is unprecidented but I think it's gonna happen within 2-3 years.
Whatever happens... STAY SAFE!!!!!
Thank you!!!
Looks like the volcanoes want to play their version of music!
Welome🌋 and yes, it's something like that :)
Winters are cold there but this may a bit too warm when they go off.
Stay safe.
Thank you and welcome
Looking at the plot of earthquakes all the way along the plate boundaries, I cant help but think that maybe the plates are just moving apart right across Iceland. I suppose the nightmare scenario then would be that a number of volcaoes "decide" to erupt at the same time. (I'm not a volcanologist either but putting 2 and 2 together to make 5)
Like your reasoning behind Askja in particular. Better hope that it does something like 1961 rather than 1875.
Exactly :) and thanks for visiting
As an icelander im kinda curious how it would look having 7 volcanos erupt at once
Think we might ge 2 of them going at the same time, like the Reykjanes peninsula and Grímsvötn, even Katla or Hekla
@@JustIcelandiccould one volcano trigger another to erupt and that triggers another one causing a chain reaction (in theory of course)
Hello , i have heard if you are born in Iceland the babies name has to be from a specific list ? , i was wondering ,say ,if a new offshore Island was created how the name would be decided .I cannot remember where i read this and apologize if i am wrong .
A rifting event sounds rather severe & the sort of dynamic movement which could continue for centuries? Nature is the boss, always.
Well said, Nature is the boss,
It’s just Mother Earth re-arranging the furniture, again.
Unusually busy before Christmas this year :)
shit is getting real ,poles are shifting too.
Askja can have caldera forming eruptions, fissures eruptions and even mini flood basalt eruptions.
Yes the thing is that it's impossible to say what we will get up there
I so wish that humans (or superman) would invent technology that could visibly see through rock. Exciting times.

More generally, tomography is used in many fields. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tomography
One that might be familiar is positron emission tomography used for medical imaging.

It does sound like the different methods still have some issues, so may not be quite dialed in for Iceland yet. However, with time, I know they'll be able to do it.
Hope Iceland is still there when I visit again in January 23
It will for sure be here, but perhaps with "updated" landscape :)
Thanks again for your work, are earthquake’s felt through out your country?
That is very very rare, but old stories tell us that m7 come very close to it
Thanks again, Iceland keeps interesting me after 4 trips. Hoping for a tourist eruption or something where no damage can be caused....
Thanks :) and always welcome to Iceland :)
Hi Sir from Canuckistan a.k.a Canada 😉
Canuckistan? Canada is nothing like communist countries, we have all our rights and freedoms.
Welcome :)
Get the drone warmed up, it's going to be busy.
I asked Santa for a thermal drone this time :)
If Hekla is your #5.......oh boy.
Exactly :)
Wow! That's a lot of activity. I think your analysis is well thought out. Perhaps, now the scientists there will feel compelled to release more data. It would be interesting to have some collaboration with some of them, especially since they do put out data and tools that you and others use. And, you bring your stunning videography, field experience, and style to the table.
Regardless, it looks like Iceland is going to keep you on your toes for the foreseeable future. Hopefully, not doing anything devastating.
I do have a couple of questions or ideas. First, how common is it for more than one volcano to erupt there, and what is the highest number in recent history to have erupting at the same time?
Second, how do the animals react to the eruptions and quakes, and what do/did people do to prepare or evacuate animals in these situations?
Just some thoughts, since you've got me thinking. 💜🌍🌋🇮🇸🐎✌️😎
Oh yes Gylfi has got style alright...and yes those questions are quite compelling...love from Scotland🌋🌋😁
Do hope if anything is going to go, it is going to be another 'touristic' eruption; some of those earthquake hotspots you listed have the potential to be much more than just great, natural fireworks.
Along with the observations of seismic, tilt, & deformation information of Askja, are the scientists doing regular water samples of the lake, & if so, are they publicly available?
Now this is an accent I can relate to.
Welcome :)
The harmonic tremor on some of those seismographs definitely doesn't look good.
Yes it's hard so say if it's due to the earthquakes though, but obvious spikes recently
😍🌋
Welcome🌋 :)
Hi, thanks for the information, i will be traveling to Iceland in December,is there a chance to see the live volcano in December?thanks in advance
This is impossible to say :) however it would not surprise me, given how hectic things are and still no eruption, half way into the year
Its sound you got a new mic ?
Just processed the sound trough the editing software nw
Well .. We've now heard it straight from the horse's mouth. ✌
✌ exactly :)
The scientists bang on about climate change but these volcanoes when they erupt are the Earths natural cooling mechanisms that are never factored into any climate models, especially when we know the patterns of eruptions of so many volcanoes they should incorporate these into the climate models so we can plan for the cooling events when they come like now because of the Tonga eruption. The weather in the UK has been really warm going into the autumn but these next 2 weeks the way the temperature is dropping steadily day by day is telling me we could have a long winter of temperatures remaining below zero for consecutive months here in the UK so it could be a real bad one in Iceland. I remember you showing a horse shoe shape carving of a cliff by water that no geologists have explained i hope there are some videos recording the path of melt waters if there is an eruption so we can see what we are actually dealing with when something like this happens it would be a real shame if we just see the aftermath of the huge flood if one does happen...
i KNOW that You'll give us Your honest opinion from good research and long experience! Having no fear of being Politically Correct, You are HONEST! Thank You !:-)
I too feel that way about Gylfi as well...😁
So, Tonga, on a scale of 1 - 10 how worried are you about exploding?
I really can't say :) nor can I say if it ands up with an explosion, might just erupt and I say it's 50/50 that we get an eruption within a year
Solid ground. I suppose it's anything but solid. Mmm.
No solid ground by the plate boundaries :)
Aloha be glad nothing is happening now i live in Leilani and work in kona. No more. Oreo cookie with Pandemic. MadamePelecomingtotown
Welcome🇮🇸
This volcano eruption is the isometric projection event of the 1973 eruption, so most likely will erupt in January 2023
What is the location of the first 20 seconds of this video, please, where the road has been tunnelled through the rock?
The exact location is here, in the west fjords: goo.gl/maps/A8wsWrUi5w8Jr1DC8
@@JustIcelandic Amazing! Looking back through my photos, I find we went through that arch at 9.18am on 6th September 2014. It looks much more dramatic from above. Thank you!
thank you. Question. If they erupt and there is a lot of ash in the sky, does this cool the planet? maybe?
It's not a volcano of such scale, as far as I know, but it should interrupt flights for sure
We was in Iceland last week for new year , on the 2nd at 15.40 we heard the effects of the 2.3 earthquake at katla , at the time we was standing on the bridge at Seljalandsfoss water fall when all the large iceickes at the top started cracking , we didn’t think anything of the time , only that 2 idiot tourists were standing underneath, breaking the rules as the path behind the fall was closed for safety , it was only when I cross referenced the photo time and the earthquake time they were the same time
Thank you for sharing, Katla is actually still rumbling and I will do an update about it soon, as things look now, and thanks for visiting Iceland :)

Well of all 7 went up at one time it would create an ice age that last 40 thousand years. And last time that happened was when Greenland used to be were Iceland is now.
Iceland is gonna become Lavaland if this continues...i must say the name doesn't have the same ring to it...

Try the subtitles
The title sounds almost “apocalyptic “.... Hope you never have seven go off at once, especially since I just recently viewed from your files an eruption from 1973 I believe from an Island off the coast of Iceland that did major damage and caused huge evacuations. And that was from one volcano.... 7 reminded me of the use of it by God. It was used often by Him. For instance,He created in six “days” the heavens earth and all therein and rested the 7th to start the cycle of “weeks” for humankind. This is recorded in Genesis and the final book of the Bible (Revelation) records many uses of 7 in relation to God; 7 thunders, 7 angels, 7 seals, 7 trumpets, 7 golden vials, etc... It has been linked to His judgements at times, such as 7 years of famine or 7 years of drought. Just thought I would share as I know God is in control of all things even if many think He isn’t. He does let us go our own ways though without considering Him...at least for a while. Iceland is a beautiful country and I pray for its people as I do for those where I live now. Thanks for all your work!
Once upon a time *ICEland* soon to become *FIREland* 😂😂😂
