    I've had this PC (i7 upgrade) for a couple of weeks and the only complaint is the thermals (reaching 90+ degrees while gaming for CPU and GPU). I ended up installing an upgraded CPU cooler, added three 92mm 1600rpm redux fans (1 exhaust, 2 intake). The two intake fans were installed using the black bracket on the side (had to recreate the black bracket on CAD software and then used the negative space to fill the peaks and valleys on both sides of the bracket to create an isolator gasket for the fan to only suck air from the vent holes/mitigate vibration and had to dremel a small portion of the SSD caddy to fit the fans. Now it runs like a dream but will need to rearrange the fans if I want to upgrade the GPU in the future.

    I would use a 120mm intake fan at the bottom of the case instead of the 80mm fan. And adding that 1tb ssd for extra games space is a great idea. That way, if you backup and have to restore the pc, the restore file will be smaller and restore faster. At under $900, that is a really inexpensive 1440p gaming pc. Looks great.

      Thanks! The first thing I do with every new PC is to connect to the internet, and...
      1. Hit start menu and search "Check for Updates." Let all the Windows updates download and install - it'll probably need to reboot a couple times.
      2. Hit start menu again and search "Add or remove programs." I uninstalled all the bloatware - anything that says McAfee, Cortana, Drop Box, Express VPN, Microsoft 365/Office." Reboot again.
      3. Install STEAM and EPIC. You'll want both! EPIC has free games all the time (Last year I got GTA5, NBA2K21, etc) so it's good to check the store periodically to look at the current free game.
      Enjoy it! The two cables I removed should still be connected inside your case and you'll be able to plug that SATA connector to a new SSD when you get one. Let me know if you have any questions! I've been doing this stuff since the late 90s before the internet and would wait eagerly for the monthly Micro Times magazine.

    • @junbox618
      @junbox618  Před 2 lety

      Depends on what you want to upgrade. You won't be able to put a high power GPU in it because the power supply can't be upgraded. Example the 3060TI uses 200W, and you can probably upgrade to a 3070 (220Watts), but not a 3080 (320Watts). But who knows, maybe future generations of GPUs will use even less power.
      But check this out. An old Nvidia 980TI runs at 250Watts. The 3060TI is 66% faster and runs at 200Watts. Power consumption has been trending down over the years and I expect that to continue. Who knows maybe the next gen of 3080 equivalent cards will only use 200Watts and you won't need to upgrade the power supply on this PC.

In your videos it looks like the splitter is coming off of the system fan (3pin) but the splitter you linked is a 4pin female? Would you think it'd be able to fiit the Noctua NF-A9x14 PWM? Don't get too hung up on AMD vs Intel. GPU is going to make the biggest difference. Even the 6 core Ryzen that came with our HP is plenty fast and isn't bottlenecking the system. Get the best GPU you can get - the 3060TI we got is about 30% faster than the regular 3060. That's what made my system such a great deal. We added a 120mm fan blowing out from the top, and just keep the side cover off. That keeps the GPU to 86C. There's no ventilation from the front, and I'm too scared to cut a big hole in the plastic front. I think 86C is OK, though.

      Stock it's a little fire box with only a single small rear fan. The case will get hot to the touch, hardware will overheat and your games will be throttled back. With the case open it's fine because the hot air can escape better. Adding a fan up top like I did dropped CPU and GPU temps by a few degrees well within safe limits.

    • @junbox618

      Mine had the SATA cable already plugged into the motherboard. Installing SSD was as simple as plugging in the power and SATA cable. Even if you had no idea what you're looking at, there are only 2 cables inside the case that will fit the SSD. Whatever you do, buy a quality SSD. I went with a Crucial MX500 because it has DRAM, relatively fast, and cheap ($67/1TB).
      Plugging in a new fan is a little more complicated because you'll have to buy a splitter for the fan cable. I think leaving the casedoor open is good enough, really.

      85's starting to get a bit warm on the CPU. Try to get some more airflow into the case by adding a fan like me, and consider upgrading the rear case fan. Those are cheap upgrades that might drop a couple degrees. If no luck, I would start looking at a new CPU cooler. I think the GPU is fine at 75-82 but if you want to cool it down, try adjusting the fan curve and make it a bit more aggressive.
      The less popular option is to set a lower max CPU speed. Power Options -- > Advanced Settings -- > Processor power management -- > Maximum processor state -- > drop it down to 80% or so, and it won't work as hard (less heat). You'll lose a few FPS in games, but the computer will run cooler. If you're unhappy with the performance, you can boost it up to 90% and see if you're OK with it. You can do similar with the GPU. On my work PC I have a 1070 that runs a little hot in my super quiet case. I underclock the core 200MHz and memory 100MHz. It keeps the temps down, and I lost maybe 3FPS in games. Not a big deal, I'm happy with it.
