What an engine to be Unreal.
Humans are so good at percepting facial expressions that even this metahuman still looks uncanny in action.
yeah, it made me laugh. People don't talk showing their teeth like that. Shows programming alone does not make something lifelike. Sort of like when in games all the vegetation sways back and forth in the same way does not account for how in real life each plant has its own level of flexibility and wind varies from place to place within a single view. These programmers need to step away from the computer, touch grass and socialize in real life.
@gaba023 You realize computers are limited in how much they can do right? I think it's funny when someone shows their lack of knowledge and uses it to look down on others.
The purpose of these tools is not to generate perfect lifelike humans, it’s to maximize the functionality a developer has for getting their vision into a working game.
@@gaba023 The sheer computational power required to simulate thousands of individual strands of grass/plants is impossible with todays computing standards optimization is a thing and it's essentially tradeoffs for performance.

It isn't, that was the whole point. Perhaps you should look up the definition of "diversion."
I can see unreal engine being one of those companies that lives long enough to see the year 2050 or 2100.
as long as they don't get greedy it's easy.
it's basically like valve "don't do anything, wait for the others to shoot themselves in the foot for short term profit."
UE is the product.
Epic is the company.
@@satibel
Nah, that's underselling all the work Epic put in to make Unreal such a great engine to work with, to say nothing of their choices in licensing costs which have only made it more popular still.

@@mnomadvfx yeah true, they are actually improving the product, but what I mean is that what they have to do is just continue their incremental updates and not screw their clients over for a quick buck.

I'm shocked Unreal didn't have animation retargeting, surely I'm missing something here.
Unity animations target transforms by their name and hierarchy for years now.
Unreal has "simple" animation retargeting for more versions back than I can remember ;) With UE5, came advanced IK retargeting, and now with UE 5.4, it took it to another level with fully automatic IK retargeting between different types of skeletons (it's not always 100% perfect, but on the instances where it fails, it still gives you a base to start adding the needed corrections)
@@TheAF01 I see, thanks for clarifying.
Uunreal has different priorities, as most engines do.
Unigine for example concentrated on very technical superiority like water rendering and large world coordinates - UE5 still doesn't match it there.
Eventually UE will catch up for everything while having its own superior features.
@@mnomadvfx UE 5 absolutely does match Unigine with "large world coordinates". Unreal got 64bit coordinate system in 5.1 and the free version of Unigine doesn't even offer it. And for the water, there are plguins for Unreal that easily compete with what Unigine offers.
I've been doing cinematics in this since 2020. I am *IN LOVE*. Everything old is new again! Including the tricks I pulled to fit things in 4Mb of Amiga RAM ;)
Unreal Engine never seces to amaze me with its development!
Its both amazing for devs using it... but also scary, that they have such a monopoly but also no competition, specifically because of the amount of features they've built, and the pace of development.
Monopoly by excellence does not worry me so long it does not transform into a monopoly protected by regulations 😐
@Psrj-ad
they don't have a monopoly and they have competition. if Unity didn't exist then yes Unreal would have a monopoly but Unity does exist, while Unreal has a larger market share....it's not anywhere close to being a monopoly (yet). if you want to see what a monopoly looks like, then move your gaze towards Nvidia vs AMD vs Intel.
@@rocksfire4390 There is Cryengine which is what Star Citizen uses. EA uses Frostbite. Bethesda uses Creation Engine. Godot and Open 3D Engine are free and open-source 3D game engines.
@@Luizfernando-dm2rf
Monopoly by excellence is less of a problem so long as they continue to innovate until there is basically no low hanging fruit left and all the remaining possible features are just very high investment, low return.
Regulation doesn't serve Epic's long term interests which is why they have reduced licensing costs and made the UDK itself free to use with such a glut of supporting material.
@@rocksfire4390 Unity might as well not exist at this point, aside from for legacy projects.
Thank you for covering this!
Unreal is what is going to save the game industry. Today, the amount of time and investment to make an AAA game is an obscenity. Unreal is bringing this to a new level of affordability and ease of use. I hope to see some of this in another game engines soon.
Or, if it means that people will no longer pay $50+ for games with such levels of photorealism, will it kill the "AAA game"?
I'm not saying what should or shouldn't happen, just considering how it _could_ play out.
and it makes it easier to scam people showing them an amazing looking advertisment for a bad product.
Yesn't.
Unreal itself does save SOME time, but only with all the materials that come free with the UDK like the Megascans library does it reduce so much of the load.
Even if Lumen hypothetically could eliminate the need for light maps, realistically hardware just isn't there yet on all platforms to make that viable, so there are still options.
Same thing with Substance Painter/Designer - a big time saver with parametric layered PBR texture creation.
Or Marvelous Designer for clothes.
I could see Epic eventually trying to do everything within the UDK, but that is a lot of software investment, and it will take a very long time to get there.
Also, procedural DCC like Houdini help take some of the load off level creation too.
So you see by itself it is significant, but it is by no means a singular lifesaver.
@@AllenKnutson
"Or, if it means that people will no longer pay $50+ for games with such levels of photorealism, will it kill the "AAA game"?"
Not gonna happen.
Even if UE/UDK makes game creation vastly easier the effect of inflation on game dev wages still applies.
@@scribblescrabble3185
"and it makes it easier to scam people showing them an amazing looking advertisment for a bad product"
Yes and no.
As game engines become more advanced and asset creation tools become easier to make the same assets with less labor time/training it actually makes it more possible to make the game look as good as those pre rendered CG advertisements, like with Star Wars: The Old Republic.
Wow. Such amazing development
Normally, I wouldn't care a crap about this- just gimme a game! But your enthusiasm, the wonder and joy that just drips from your narration, has really made me pay attention to what you do. Two Minute Papers is a little bright spot in an always cloudy, raining, grey life. Thanks!

We really are living in the future
5:02 is very uncanny valley, but this is the early stages... what a time indeed! I do wonder how many artists we will need in the future, in fact, I wonder how many 'jobs' we'll need?
"Shine ya shoes sir?"
That was actually on purpose because they were showing off iphone face tracking. That clip was from the GDC 2023 presentation, where the actress was making very exaggerated facial expressions to show off the tracking and they were capturing it all with just an iPhone, and applying the animation to several different characters on stage in front of an audience. A more professional set up with proper facial tracking gear would look more realistic (see the Hellblade 2 trailer, for example, which is the same actress).
@@sigrid714 it shouldn't look uncanny then. Uncanny doesn't mean exaggerated expression
What alive to be a time. The future is getting closer faster in the last 8 months than anyone anticipated in the last 30 years. Can't wait to see what stuff is added to blender, unreal and stable diffusion by December.
Unreal Engine looks so impressive it almost makes you think it's unreal.
I'm glad to have chosen this as one of my game engines of choice to work with.
The features it has an offers are mind-blowing.
How computationally expensive are these game changers? Will we be able to run these future games on current PCs and VR headsets, or does this imply a need for better hardware?

hahahaaha poor Dr being compared to an AI so sad
I too think this is some sort of AI. Its the same inflection pattern over and over to the point where it is arguably too questionable to be real. Synthesizing voices was a thing even before the big ai craze of the past 2 years
@@howevisual7099It's a real dude he's given live speeches before and talks the same.
I look forward to the day when more developers stop using unreal engine 4 and move on to 5.
Thank you for all your great work , you have a proven historical record of this technology advancing over so many papers!!!!
For which we are so very grateful.
Take care my friend,

Unreal engine could always do retargeting, it was just that the process was made easier with native support for a lot of popular formats instead of having to manually build your own retargeting setup for each.
Is..This voice...Available for Siri?
have they improved mirror reflections?
I'd love to see these motion mapping softwares used specifically for VR avatars. If they could use head, hand, and even feet, the model could quickly synthesize a pose that fits well without looking to stiff like current avatar solutions.
I really like the physical movement effects. I'd love to see an MMA demo come out or those 3rd person perspective games with parkour or stealth sneaking around climbing the environment type stuff. I wish there was more indie projects or some fun and goofy stuff we could try on the PS5 because my pc is down right now.
Unreal has had retargetting since UE4. They just made it so the control rig can be transferred to other characters in a very simply and intuitive way.
does anyone have more information on the meta humans thing? how can i easily turn myself into a 3d character with a scan?
What a Real-time to be alive! ❤

Animation retargeting is a NEW feature in Unreal?? That's like 20 years behind, if this is true.

They have really set the bar high with ue5, with AI going nuts things are about to get a lot more interesting
Now we need a way to instruct animation characters to do something like say a director would tell an actor ...
Unreal engine 5 is probably the only game engine that's had a mainstream audience invested in its development because of its diverse application, technological prowess and unprecedented quality.
I get lost day dreaming about all the games I would make in it and then remember the price of the computer I would need to even install it let alone run it. Cool stuff to see some previous papers being used practically. Especially nvidia's AI trained motion animation.

@@Gerlaffy There are videos of him speaking on CZcams. Why would he go through all this effort to fake his own voice when that is his own voice? Makes no sense.
@@glenneric1Could save time recording? If he has to write a script anyway, if he can just have a program generate the audio, that might be faster than writing the script and then doing several takes to get the right recording of it.
Not saying he is doing this. I don’t hear anything amiss. Just, “here’s a possible motivation”.
I suppose another motivation could be if he was sick and had a sore throat or something, or if his voice changed in some way that he dislikes, but those both seem like less likely reasons.
@@drdca8263even daily dose of internet records when sick, that’s not a excuse. Either you do it or you take a break

If he isn’t writing the script, then that I suppose could deceptive in a bad way.
@@drdca8263 it’s not an excuse to use ai voices for small things you can just take a break, is it about the quantity or quality?
I think with unreal 6 or maybe 7, that'll be the end of what can be done graphically and with physics. New updates would just be to make the UI more efficient.
False it would always evolve just slower just like PCs used to evolve fast at the beginning
@TwoMinutePapers
Are you by chance from Hungary or Romania? I was checking global census demographics and those two countries has the strongest occurrence of the names Karoly, Zsolnai and Feher.
It’s insane that we are getting close to the point where these game engines will allow a single person to do like a Pixar quality movie (like some of their older ones) themselves and then output it as a playable thing, not even just pre-rendered.
This is my hope!!! I'm still learning as is though hehe
Are there any games that actually make good use of all the features they showed off last year?
Cant wait to try UE, learn it and make awesome animation videos for CZcams. I need to buy 4070 super because i dont think my 970 would be enough
This is going to produce some insane looking games. Taking that workload out of the development cycle is going to let a lot more time and money to be put into art, game play, and bug fixing.
Are there any games that use these advanced graphics?
it takes years after an engine releases for games to apply the features, sadly, just now we are getting new releases with nanite and lumen, and even they are unoptimized, it won't be until 2025 and probably later we see games use the full power of 5.4, the good news is, they keep adding features that automate animating rigs and generating environments, so games will be developed so much faster now.
This is Unreal! 😁
Amazing 😍
It's time for me to learn unreal I guess, lol
Thank you.
This is all very beautiful, of course, but for some reason I haven’t seen a game with such graphics yet, there are games made on ue5 but such graphics are only in cutscenes.
Such click-bait! The features described have been around for years, even in Unity. How's this a new thing? I guess the speaker just got introduced to game engines last week.
Thanks
With a capable engine like UT it's quite conceivable that AI can soon generate an entire engaging game scenario, like a holodeck. Indeed the very same high level generation into a 3D engine could be potent for movie and tv series production because you get the 3D coherence and fast render that is otherwise difficult in pure neural space. Should be quite interesting. At first it will have many flaws but still amazing to try. Characters can have LLM style intelligence engines from a preamble fitting that character in that situation. A story teller LLM can dynamically prompt the characters to fit the overall narrative. It's not hard to imagine AI immediately generating a game world far richer and more immersive than Cyberpunk 2077. Midjourney style art generation and other AIs that convert that into actual 3D elements in euclidian space.
This game changer will certainly change the games !
I'm eager to see Epic's response to the AI revolution and what kind of machine learning projects they're covertly developing in their undersea research facilities.
Just wish Tencent didn't have so much invested in them atm.
Wunderbar.

makes sense, thanks
If i were Mark Zuckerberg, integrating this technology into an updated version of the metaverse would be my top priority.
Metaverse is a tax evasion scheme. "Oh shucks we lost $54 BILLION, guess we'll have to write that off, darn it all."
Great vid man. Next time don't say "and" once and it would be better though. Unless it's your trademark then keep it.
This is artificial voice
Ah my favorite scale; Old to Oration.
Makes you wonder, where will the metaverse be built?
In Nvidia’s Omniverse? Or in Unreal Engine?
Or what if Nvidia bought Epic Games?
$2T >> $32B. They can afford it, and that would secure the metaverse in the hands of Nvidia beyond any doubt.
Omniverse is just a flashy toy pretty much.
nVidia penis measuring.
UE is a work horse designed for maximum flexibility.
"Or what if Nvidia bought Epic Games? $2T >> $32B. They can afford it"
It's not just about who can afford what, but who is selling too.
I doubt Epic want to sell.
Tim Sweeney owns more than half the stock, and he doesn't seem the type to sell out a la John Carmack and id Software.
Tencent own roughly 40% of the stock, but that doesn't allow them to control Epic, even if nVidia bought them out they wouldn't be able to tell Sweeney what to do - just share in the profits.
AI generation will make game engines obsolete in under 5 years and NVIDIA makes the GPUS that allow Unreal to do anything at all.
Can someone train an ai model on using unreal? Like get a model and train it on videos or other training data like text and images so the ai can use unreal. I just want it to be easy. Plus you could set it to auto learn new updates or ask to learn new updates.
The metahumans are becoming really impressive, add a bit of generative ia and we're done
So all these videos debunking CSI "enhancing" pictures where wrong! Or just a decade too early
Enhance.... (Clack clack clack)... Enhance.
Ai restores believable detail from its memory, not the original detail. If you enhance small blurry text, it will just become random text.
Everyone should watch the pilot episode of Star Trek to see where this ends up...
Now we need FDVR technology
2:45 enhance! :D
AND...I like this video! 👍
Great program as usual. WTF does Microsoft mean by "...responsible AI..." exactly ??
AI can be used to ruin people's lives with deep fakes. A teacher's family recently received death threats because the teacher's voice was used to generate racist rants. AI can be used to for weapons development, account hacking, infrastructure destabalization like malware at nuclear facilities that the CIA made. AI discovered some 55,000 new materials, more than all of humanity discovered in 500,000 years, how many of those materials could be deadly if actually produced by little robot hands in giant robot factories?
Neat.
Create 2D motion graphics with 3D objects? 🤔
Imagine this in a real time game ...
straight up looks like ready player one, the movie
I like it
Finally we can have some good R34 content 😂
Unreal engine 5 seems to be THE game engine todate, if you want highly realistic games. For highly stylized games, those demos are certainly not meant as reference and you would need way more experience to get those effects running with your styles. In those cases you may not even need such a highly sophisticated engine. It also stands to question if you would need it for at least Nanite or Lumen, if you go the stylized route.
This is one of the most unique channels on youtube, but why it has such few subscribers?
More 30 years and Unreal will change the brand name to Real
All this doesn't matter if you shut down a studio that makes award winning games.
