@@strawberryjogurt6134 This is exactly what happened to me! I have played Harvest Moon since the Game Boy Advance and was always excited about the next games that would come out. Then when The Lost Valley came out I bought it without question - because it simply had the HM name. I knew straight away after about ten seconds of game play that something was wrong. I was in such shock... It was so terribly bad and nothing like what I had come to expect from the actual creators of the game. I couldn't believe how Natsume had ripped me off. I will never buy another HM game from Natsume again and strictly stick with Story of Seasons (the original creators of the game). I want to support the actual people that created, designed and put in all that hard work over the past 20 years to make what is now Story of Seasons rather than support a company that put in about 1% of what the original creators did and are now using the localized western name of the old HM games in order to capitalize on money from people who might not know that HM is no longer created by the same people who made the older games. They may not have done anything wrong legally, but it is literally a slap in the face to those original creators and to many of us fans of the series. ): HM under Natsume now is just a copy and paste of even worst quality game play than what it is trying to copy - it has none of the charm, awesome artwork, heart or love put into it at all and I reckon all they will ever be doing is chasing the coattails of the original creators, as they don't seem to be able to create something wholly their own to begin with. Shame on them.

I feel so bad because some harvest moon fans outright stopped playing because Natsume is is dragging the series down by making their version of harvest moon.

@@Lexipumpkin783 They make the bare minimum effort possible, just look at the newest harvest moon, it looks like a very crappy mobile game made by someone in college. They either make a game nobody asked (the "minecraft" harvest moon) or make a minimum-effort farm sim game. Even the graphics are horrible and the scenario completely lacks any detail and polish. It is literally the minimum they can do just to milk the franchise, I bet those games have a very low budget and very short development time to maximize the profits without putting any effort. Watch the trailer of Harvest Moon: One World and then watch Story of Seasons Pioneers of Olive Town, both games released in the same year. It's like seeing a game made by a single developer in 2 months (HM) versus a game made by a company with years of development (SoS).
Long story short: "Harvest Moon" is now called "Story of Seasons". Every new game coming out titled "Harvest Moon" is nothing more than a heartless, lazy cashgrab.
Natsume could've changed the title in order to prevent confusion, but they didn't. Instead, they try to make money with people's ignorance. I didn't knew about the name change when I bought "Harvest Moon - Light of Hope". And oh boy, I felt so ripped of. -.- (But steam gave me my money back, so.. yay! Go steam!)
tbh i got to thank DangerouslyFunny for playing Harvest moon the shit of cashgrab and telling everyong of his watchers that this wasnt worth 30$ and here i was hoping for a new farming game to play while i wait for multiplayer but if the farming in the game is 1000000% not even worth it its a horriable game since you can get all the money you ever need by mining and what else if you faint nothing lost like why have the stamina meter if it pointless and omg the feilds just grow EVERYTHING back in less then three days oh suddenly giant boulders randomly appered tottally logical. Also NO MODS UNTIL THE NEXT PC GAME IM OUT. The 1 thing that could had made the game worth buying will never happen since the developers forbid mods until the consol version or the next game got it smelling like shit is brewing

It doesn't help that Natsume seems to be trying to get people to think their games are the real harvest moon games rather than SoS, I remember reading this one post on their tumblr where they referred to their garbage games as "the true harvest moon games" or something similar along those lines
Yeah, pretty much. I’ve heard Skytree village is good though, hence “varying degrees of quality” referring to Natsume’s spin-off titles.

This video is definately needed, I spent the longest time thinking that the SOS games were spin-offs of Harvest Moon, due to the fact that quite a few news articles reported it that way, and didn't know otherwise until a month ago when I started getting back into the Harvest Moon series.
Yeah....the main reason that pushed me over to make this video was that so many media outlets reported on the change wrong. Glad enough fans kept nagging me to make this as a reminder lol

Since the creator of Bokujou Monogatari loves Stardew Valley I definitely agree. I don’t trust any of the Natsume split Harvest Moon, they can’t even spell their own company’s name right.
Apparently Stardew Valley helped bring new attention to Harvest Moon helping it become a well known cult classic. I wouldn't have heard of either if it wasn't for certain retro gaming CZcamsr's passion for the original.
I hate most SV fans because they keep talking about how it's "harvest moon but better" without having played a single HM game, but I'm hoping this leads to the next Bokujo Monogatari/Story of Seasons game being radically different and more like the old HM games. They've been terrible since the creator left around Tale of Two Towns. I'm excited for what comes next.
I feel so fooled! Last time I owned a Harvest moon game was when I was 13.
Feeling in the christmas mood, I got myself a present and bought Harvest moon skytree village. And I was so shocked! Everything was missing, so simple and lacking any complexity! It was not even able to lift up things. And now I find out I didn't actually buy a Harvest Moon game, but Natsume bullshit instead. I feel really angry right now because I saw "Story of Seasons" in the store and wanted to stick to something I knew.
Annemarie Förster I researched a lot about Harvest moon and rune factory to find out about future games and I found out quickly about the separation since I'm a huge lover of the series. I was thrilled xseed picked up the series renamed it as story of seasons. I hope you'll get your hands on a copy of trio of towns! it's a blast :)

i knew about it before story of seasons came out there is a website that i use when i get stuck that also has a current news section that covers anything related to the series. it's called ushi no tane. it is also completely in english and they give credit to their sources.

It’s like Harvest Moon got a doppelgänger so it legally changed its name to Story of Seasons to escape it’s stalker, but then people thought the doppelgänger was the real person.
RIP this poor game has been violated when trying to make an honest living. Without this video I would have never known why Harvest Moon changed so much, and that it actually changed its name. Thank you so much for explaining this. ;3; (I may be a year late but hey, at least now I’m informed, lol.~)

The licenses is terminated but the problem is Natsume owns the name "Harvest Moon".
That's a really messed up situation. I grew up playing Harvest Moon, not "Story of Seasons". This wouldn't be a problem if the localized version kept the name "Ranch Story" to begin with, then there would not be a name change and this entire situation averted. Of course, the name "Ranch Story" doesn't click like Harvest Moon does and neither does "Story of Seasons", the name itself is an SOS.

I’m pretty sure even if they decided to literally translate it, Natsume would still have been able to trademark the name “Ranch Story,” leading to the exact same situation. Fortunately, Marvelous has learned from past mistakes, and this time around they made sure that _they_ hold the trademark for Story of Seasons.

I realised something was off specially with the art so I never bought the new harvest moons on 3ds and was excited for story of seasons
I also got cold feet from buying because of the art and ended up buying animal crossing happy home designer instead. only to find out later what really is up... so sad that Natsume became a lazy cash grab. :/

People definitely need this explanation, I hate that people saying that SoS is a HM rip-off. They should do their research...I want a new Rune Factory! I heard of popolocrois but that isn't exactly Rune Factory. There's a game called Re:Legend which is the closest thing to Rune Factory that I've seen in a while, the thing is that, the game is still in kickstarter! The next closest thing was Stardew Valley but, that was missing a more in-depth battle system and monster taming that Rune Factory had.
Seriously, someone, give us back our Rune Factory or something close to it!
Don't get me wrong, I loved stardew valley but, Re:Legend seems to be closer to it, I hope that it passes it's kickstarter. You should react to the trailer!

Agreed. Rune Factory will always be first. Now, Raguna, my boy, you had two games. Just why didn't we get more insight into your past in the second game? Still love his character though, I dunno, there was just something different about Raguna. Quickly followed by Micah, loved that one as well. Why am I attached to those three games more than the others?

Thank you for reminding me i should get back into the tides of distney on my wii. But making a fun multiplayer kind of game would be fun. My gf loves the farm part in harvest moon but i enjoy the combat& monster taming of the rune factory since i could farm but really don't have to farm.

I was able to contact XSEED for help on the Rune Factory video, the downside to this is that it will have to be pushed back into the first part of next year because of the holiday. I am hoping the delay allows me to create a more informative and entertaining video!

I think the best thing Story of Seasons (Bokujou Monogatari) could do is rerelease new version of HM Back to Nature / Friends of Mineral Town under SoS name. For me those are most memorable HM games and it might further explain this confusion to people who think SoS is a rip off....

(The Pokémon colosseum issue) I had a GameCube, but never had the opportunity to buy the game! Now that I keep hearing rumors about GCN coming to Nintendo Switch virtual console, I may have an opportunity to finally experience that awesome game! (That is, unless Marvelous decides to HD port it to Switch with a new name, which is cool too...)

Im so disappointed with Natsume and the shit they've been putting out in Harvest Moons name. Theyre basically scamming people into buying shitty games by using the HM title. I definitely look forward to buying Story of Seasons at some point in the future, but I can't stand games like this on the DS, so hopefully Wii or better yet PS4 versions come out at some point...

What annoys me the most about this story is the fact that Natsume did not say anything about the name change in 2013. And she continued to publish Harvest Moon titles as if nothing had happened. For that I hate Natsume.

People were sad on the newest release of "Harvest Moon" on Steam so I made a post in the discussions with this....
They deleted the post and banned me for it.

They said it was "Spam" and it's a perma ban. It happened right after, and they deleted the thread instead of locking it like they did to others.
They did it because a lot of ppl spammed those „it’s not original“ comments. The game is still great fun. It’s better than their ds tries before in terms of mechanic and pretty back to the xseed roots. I mean story of season is likely better yet they keep getting better and it’s still a fun series... maybe 80% the quality of SOS. Some charactersprites and the mainchar module are bad though. I would like to see some improved versions on steam again later on. Competition is never bad, they went in a friendly matter not with bad words. ( the SOS publisher actually congratulated natsume). And I prefer it over the horrible stardew graphics.. can’t rly handle most of the designchoices - yet design =|= gameplay

So...as someone who never got into the old HM series I picked it up much later...
I decided to pick up SoS thinking it was a nicer looking game compared to the HM Natsume games that were out at that time, and I feel in love.
Glad I now know that SoS is the official HM series and current 'HM' games are a developer riding the misleading train

i remember i used to play animal parade on wii, i didn't delved on the game too much because i move but that game is seriously memorable, having a squirrel as a pet is LIFE!
I love A Wonderful Life, its such a sweet game and I wish more of the games in the series were more like it.
Harvest moon DS, by far my favorite SoS game, next to Trio of Towns, thanks for giving it some showing in this video, it often seems forgotten. :P
Harvest Moon DS is probably one of the ones I sunk the most time into next to Friends of Mineral Town. I was just lucky I got a later released cart of the game with all the bug fixes :x
Gammalad yeah, I ended up buying the game 3 times, and using both save files, but it's worth it.
Yessss I thought the same. I love the original DS release and the games after it just didn't have the charm and rewarding gameplay. I mean.. just those minigames that only activate by doing something random at a specific time etc. I feel like they put so much work into creating all these details. Most later games didn't have that and they also got too far away from the original gameplay (e. g. farming got simplified to add other stuff to do instead).No wonder stardew Valley sold so well since it returned to the basics that made HM DS so good. But i have to say the two Rune factory games for Wii and PS3 are amazing as well...they added so many different things to do without cutting much of their individual depth (farming, battle, crafting, cooking etc.).
The only bad thing about RF is that IGN had a vendetta against it or something, which made it seem bad and not enough people got it. Other than 3 and oceans, RF was an amazing series. Unfortunately Stardew Valley doesn't have anywhere near the same appeal as HMDS has for me, I think because in my mind it feels kind of like a rip-off of the series and there's still a ton of features missing (and I can't get over the art style, it doesn't have the charm and feels too flat for me) I like the HD textures in HMDS(in comparison) than SV, and the small progression goals such as sprites or farm helpers that are missing in SV. Don't get me wrong, i want to like the game, but something's missing from it that's stopping it from being up there for me.
I'm hoping the newer story of seasons game, even after ToT will be great, maybe throwback to 64, AWL, DS, MFoMT, HMRF1,2,4, and Frontier some features from those such as combination crops, crop specialization(HMDS w/ the seed leveling system) home-made furniture(RF Tides of Destiny) Multiple home styles(Magical Melody, Trio of towns) actual grid based crop system (HM SNES through HM Island of happiness[?]) multiple cow breeds (AWL, Trio of towns) more than one goat(unlike AWL) old-school mining system(yeah i know they're not great, but I enjoyed the hell out of them, HM FoMT,MFoMT, HMDS, HM MM) Lastly, HMDS Jewelry-style upgrade system (where you get the jewelry from the mines to improve your stats)
Those are my wish list, and I only listed the stuff from the games I've played(so no tree of tranquility, Another Wonderful Life, ANB, SoS ToTT, RF2, GBC 1,2,3)
Maybe Stardew Valley will update to make it appeal more to me, but with how indie developers are, that's not going to happen(or at least what the modders and creators of the game told me, at least when i asked about graphics, and maybe getting a mod/update for them.)
Phillip Rehkemper The creator of the Bokujou Monogatari series actually loves Stardew Valley, there was an interview done between ConcernedApe and the Bokujou Monogatari creator.
I've played the HM series since Harvest Moon DS came out and have been a big fan since but when The Lost Valley came out I got it and it was.... bad to say the least. This video has cleared up so much for me!
Thanks for making this video! I always try and messily hash out this story whenever someone brings up Harvest Moon in some way, now I can just link this to them and have someone else explain it in a much more detailed and eloquent way.
Excellent job explaining this all! I was deep into the fandom while this entire transition happened and it was confusing while I was watching everything happen. I remember someone found that Natsume trademarked the title Harvest Moon: The Lost Valley (this was right before Story of Seasons was formally announced) and we were so confused since the new Bokujo game didn't really take place in a lost valley.
I ran a panel on the history of Harvest Moon / Story of Seasons at the last convention I went to. Everyone there aside from a handful of people didn't know that the series even had a name change! It's a shame it isn't a well-known subject since the new SoS game is really fun! I'll share around this video to help spread the word, especially since you explained it so well~!
the only reason Natsume had the license for so long was Wada was loyal to them because no company in America wanted anything to do with it and when Wada left marvelous they dropped Natsume as fast as they could because they hadn't been entirely happy with them for years.. Now marvelous and xseed is slowly going to remake the old games so they'll be under the new series when not making new chapters of it

I didn't like the art style in story of seasons at first, but I got really into it especially trio of towns and is now one of my top favorites of the series. it is a great game when you play it.
Mystary TV the new graphic style really deters me. I grew up with TOT, and AP and the art style/ perspective was what grasped my 12 yeah old brain like a vice grip, and refused to let go. I’d spend DAYS on my wii trying to make my farm the best, falling in love with my favorite character, and ringing all the bells or making the rainbows. I’ll miss the old style, and needless to say I will not be getting the new game.

great video! I used to love natsume when I was a teenager (about 20 years ago) I'd always watch what they were coming out with next. But now a days I don't even bother. They used to publish a lot of unusual games with niche appeal but now they seem to just release shlock.
I had no idea that anyone didn't know about the split at that Harvest Moon is now Story of Seasons. I do like how XSEED's has localized RF4 and the current Story of Seasons games that we have today. They get commended a LOT when they listen to player feedback. I still remember how Mistel's name was going to be a variation on "Michael", but of course they listened to us and what they wanted. Natsume doesn't seem to be doing that at all (and they seem to be getting sloppy with their character designs. I'm staring HARD at Luke in TLV.) So far, many have enjoyed Light of Hope and I hope they continue to do so and at least NOT listen to the fans who scold them for liking it.
It'll be nice, though, to see Tale of Two Towns with the original names that fans wanted (which Natsume didn't listen to us about.) I can hardly wait to see if it'll get localized here.

Wow. Stumbled upon this video because I was doing research for the upcoming game Doraemon Story of Seasons. I'm a huge Harvest Moon/Story of Seasons fan and remembered XSeed announcing SoS, then Natsume a day later announcing their own HM game. Even now, with games like Stardew Valley, I have to always say that HM isn't HM anymore. Now I finally have a good video to explain the split.

I've known this for years but I still can't get used to it.. For me, the name Harvest Moon itself has so much meanings and it is a shame that Natsume make a game under that name with "varying degree of quality"

I was a huge Harvest Moon fan and was... Confused when Story of Seasons came out, containing Cam from "A Tale of Two Towns" and many others. I thought it was just a side game or something, thus ignored it.
But then... More Story of Seasons titles continued to come out with the art style and feel that I knew for Harvest Moon, and the new Harvest Moon seeming foreign and strange. I was even more confused.
With the info provided in this video... I'm sort of disappointed with Natsume. How can they use such a well-known and beloved title? But XSeed isn't completely innocent either; they could have announced this switch in title and possibly explained why there was a switch to begin with.
Anyway, thank you for clearing this up.
Back in 2014 XSEED put out a video explaining that they will be localizing Bokujo Monogatari under the Story of Seasons name (they couldn't call it Harvest Moon in that video) sadly that video didn't get too many views, this video actually has five times more views than their E3 announcement video.
I can understand why Natsume did this, but at the same time I feel like they should be trying to actively improve their games to compete with Bokujo. Sadly that train is going to run out inevitably.

I loved Harvest Moon a lot, but I had know idea about the name switch until pretty late. Upon realizing, I hurriedly picked out a Story of Seasons game!
I wish stardew, rune factory and story of season can give a lot more awesome games
I honestly had no idea that this was the case, after finishing this video- I decided that I HAVE to buy Story of Seasons, I have to. For all this time, I too, thought it was a rip off of Harvest Moon and thought that Harvest Moon just gave up- But the creators of the series is still there, just going about their things and making the series better. Just under a different title, and I am disappointed in myself for not finding this out earlier.

I am so so SO glad I found this video! The last HM game I was able to play was on the DS, and afterwards things sort of went quiet about the series on my end. Maybe I just wasn't keeping a good enough eye out? Oh well. Once again, thank you for answering questions and for putting my heart at ease. Im surprised marv didnt sue since natsume pretty much is profitting on their game series.... They havent changed much. Hell the farmer is still pretty much the same.

That's not how it works. Marvelous cannot sue because Natsume OWNS the use of the trademark. That's like saying Rare should sue Nintendo for continuing to make Donkey Kong Country games when it was Rare that had been originally developing them in the Super Nintendo and N64 era before Microsoft bought the company in 2002. Nintendo OWNS the Donkey Kong character and even has the rights to use Diddy Kong even though Rare created the Diddy. You don't understand how copyright, trademarks, and business works!

I prefer the older Harvest Moon games like Friends of Mineral Town. Much more simple than the new Story of Seasons games that are coming out. They feel more like a chore because of so much added content that I can't seem to enjoy playing them as much as I used to.
Does anyone know what will happen to Rune Factory games? Will they continue to make them? They were my favorite games because I love the farming but I also loved the action. I am just wondering if a Rune Factory 5 is still possible (from what I can tell there were hints in 4 that there was going to be another game). Who owns the series?
While Marvelous does not own the Rune Factory IP, they brought on the entire Rune Factory development team when Neverland went under. They have the most room to try and get a Rune Factory 5 made one day.

every titles from BokuMono, i adore them so much. in fact, the reason i bought Nintendo consoles were so that i could play all the bokumono titles, hahahaha - yes, i'm a really huge fan of this series - i've lots of fun playing it till the latest title. Can't wait for them to come on Switch :)

i'm not joking when i said i love this series so much. i play *almost all* of the titles that came out from different consoles (well i only have some of the consoles, the rest i played using emulators :p). My first was Back to Nature, but Animal Parade is my Fav till now. if people have played HM before, i think they'll also enjoy SoS too ! (since SoS is part of Bokumono anyway, hahaha 😁). as for the switch, since i already bought the console first for another game, xenoblade chronicles 2, i was hoping that they'll come out with the new title. i'm glad they're on progress right now. really can't wait to play it since i enjoy the latest, Trio of towns so much.

Grand Bazaar, is quite unique since we have to sell our own goods to people instead of shipping it to the bin like usual. Island of happiness, hmm.. i dunno if i want to play it again. i've never finished the game. the idea of playing it with stylus was kinda... meh and i stop in the middle (glad they made Sunshine Islands after that, lol). ToTT, was ok.. and ANB was great ! a wonderful life also great but Save the Homeland is the least fav title for me. simply because i can't get married with the bachelorettes xD (Glad that they made Hero of Leaf Valley after that, lol). i actually love ToT but i fell in love with AP when i first playing it. when i knew that they're going to port the ToT characters to AP, i thought i wanted to marry Chase again. but nope. nope. i was wrong. i love Gale more than him. xD Dunno why Chase characters in AP wasn't appealing to me.
But wow.. How can you choose only one fav bachelor ever ? That's amazing ! 😂 i can't do that. i always have fav in every title. and sometimes more than one bachelors.. (Marvelous, i demand to include Harem for your next BokuMono title ! xDD~). Even the latest game, i'm confused to choose between Ludus, Ford and Hinata, LOL xD
i played Stardew Valley as well. at first i'm not liking it because of the graphics. But i'm glad i continue playing it. The game was ok for me (actually it's quite good) but i prefer Rune Factory series more instead of SV. but still recommended to play it :)

in Wonderful Life SE i chose Lumina as my wife (Please don't bash me as a pedo, LOL) and i'm Glad because she doesn't look too old in the last year. :))) and for Save the Homeland actually at that time i was hyped because i have PS2 and i'm glad that they made the game for that console too. But since i played Back to Nature for couple hours i was sooo disappointed because it just end without the MC not being able to married with anyone. i found out years later that they made Hero of Leaf Valley for PSP, but since i don't have the console, i played it using emulator on my Lapy. and it's sooo Gooodd because we have multiple endings and also we can marry the bachelorettes even the Harvest Goddess. hahahaha xD (i married to her btw). in ToT i played Both Characters. i married with Kathy too (She has the best wedding dress to be honest xD) and as a girl, i married with Chase. in AP, i want to married with Chase again,but somehow he looks.. i don't know. un-interesting maybe ? i think at that time i wanna choose between Gill and Gale, but yeah i fell in love with Gale instead xD ~
in the first SoS i chose Klaus and Lillie (played both Char) but in Trio of Towns, now i decided to Marry Ludus and Later i'm going to marry Ford :D This game is so good, Even for the old titles, i keep coming back and playing it once in a while.. (now i'm using emulators since most of my consoles can't be used anymore :( , luckily my wii still alive xD).

Yes i go with Ludus, because he's so manly and i love his blue hair (my fav color lol). yup, ford is the doctor and he's so adorable everytime he opened up his heart. i love to spoiled myself, so i looked up the other bachelors heart events. Ford looks boring in the beginning but later he's so cute, i can't.... 😍😍😍 (not as cute as Hinata, the other bachelor i'm obsessed with, but still cute enough.xD)

I fell in love with A Wonderful Life after picking it up from a discount bin at Walmart. I was like 21, and had never heard of harvest moon up to that point. After AWL my husband got me magical melody for christmas, and I wasn't a fan, but it was cute. Still played it. But I was a Die hard AWL fan. Years later, I had kids. And my oldest kid had a 3DS. And my husband wanted to surprise me by buying me the newest harvest moon game.
Biggest disappointment ever. I was like... What... The crap is this?! I gave it to my kid, who sort of liked it, but I was so bummed.
Then I freaking googled why it sucked so much and discovered story of seasons. I got duped. Never again. Lol

@@MrGo-ib1wt yes, I have since played story of seasons and it's a massively huge difference from the monstrosity that was The Lost Valley.
I think what I loved about A Wonderful Life was the fact that a) you age and the town ages with you and b) your kids age. All of the other games I have found that I lose interest after having a kid. Like the game is complete. Nothing else can really change, the end. I'm playing Friends of Mineral Town now, for the first time, and REALLY enjoying it. Hopefully it will keep me distracted for a year 😂

Keep an eye out for Coral Island. It's supposed to be coming out soon and it looks good! (as far as SoS goes, I'd avoid Pioneers of Olive Town... That one is a bore and a half. If you have a 3ds, both SoS and trio of towns are fun!) 😁

And to this day I'm still correcting some fans of the SoS series who don't understand name branding and how it works. But I can boil it down to this. SoS is slowly getting back to it's roots in spite of the recent fun/silly crossover... Expect something old to become something new is all I'll say.. ;3 Harvest Moon now sucks and is currently stuck in mobile app hell look/play and Stardew Valley is still on top of the haystack... For now...
I know many old school gamers love harvest moon 64 (and some younger ones too) but I fell in love with the Playstaion version. Back to nature brings back so many good memories.

The current harvest moon series is shooting itself in the foot. The games are terrible and since the HM name is attached to them, people will really notice that something is off too. If they had named them something else then people wouldn't be as pissed, but they use "Harvest Moon" to suck people in. That's really shitty, and it's sad that people get caught in this confusion. But atleast it won't last forever as most people have moved on. I'm glad to see that Story of Seasons is doing so well. Whenever I see people complaining about the new sucky harvest moon games, I always make sure to advertise Story of seasons.
This was a great learning curve. Ive loved the harvest moon series since "save the homeland" which I still play to this day. Its been remastered in the PS4 and I love it. :) You do ur thing @Natsume
