- Following the first NASCAR Cup Series dirt race in over 50 years, Speedway Motorsports Inc. CEO Marcus Smith joins Dale Earnhardt Jr. after hosting the dirt race weekend at Bristol Motor Speedway.
Dale Jr. along with co-host Mike Davis have a lot of questions about what went down in Bristol and what could be coming down the pipeline for Smith and SMI.
Smith details the next-level weather challenges Bristol faced over the weekend. He explains how his team adapted and overcame the curveball Mother Nature threw at them in their first attempt to host the Cup Series on dirt.
He then explains the origins of the idea of covering Bristol with dirt, why he initially turned it down, and how it eventually all came together. Plus, what lessons were learned from Bristol’s original dirt attempt in the early 2000s? He shares those and why some dirt from that track was used again.
Crafting a brand-new dirt track was no easy task and Smith details the process of preparing the surface and the intricate details that made it work. Then, Dale Jr. shares his hopes for when the dirt is removed from the surface later this spring.
The dirt race weekend will return in 2022 and Smith explains how that decision came together over the weekend and the unique way it was announced during Monday’s Cup race.

Whatever kind of dirt is at Eldora is the right kind of dirt.....period.
I bet pure Georgia Clay would be a great option as well. Better have a hard tire like the same compound of the Maxxis red to keep up without burning off the rubber.
Same with Terre Haute. I don't know what they have in that dirt, but I've never seen a bad race there.
Bristol dirt race needs to be at night
Jr..... Love ya man .... But you need to get out to way more different dirt tracks .... There are more different types of dirt out there and different ways to prep it than flavors of ice cream 🤣🍦 🍻🍺🍻🍻
@@joenagy9974 I think every dirt track should be prepped the way they do it at the Chili Bowl. They use some sort of powered implement. I'm not sure what its original intended use is, but it is like an egg beater for clay. Works great to really rough up the track in a short time period. Only track I've seen it used though.
Dirt to North Wilkesboro? 👀🍿
Strangely, I like this idea. It revives the track without needs to do an expensive repave.
I totally agree for some reason. Have a permanent dirt track you don’t have to constantly have to keep moving
I support anything that brings North Wilkesboro back into the fold. Wanna flood it and make it a jet boat track? Awesome where’s the dozer and pumps
Lol I swear I didn’t get to the part yet where Mike said the same thing before I said that
Oh hell yeah! And run it with dirt late models.
I'm so glad y'all are going to race on dirt again. I love it.
NASCAR could, and should get ahold of Port Royal, Knoxville Raceway (Iowa), or get back at Tony Stewart at Eldora to have a dirt track. Because, you know, they know how to have a dirt race
Throw some dirt on wilksboro Marcus and race the cup boys there!
Got to tare down the stands and the buildings in the infeild and rebuild all that plus make so haulers can park in the infeild blacktop more than likely replace the pavement in the infeild and parking lots so lots of money
One of the best interviews I've seen Jr. do thus far. Great questions, not afraid to ask pressing ones. GG's Jr, might have to go see a dirt race next year.
Would’ve been better if Davis would shut up.
Big difference between dirt and clay it's more expensive to bring in clay but makes for a better racing surface
That would be amazing to turn wilksboro to a dirttrack for nascar
Made this same comment on Eric Estepp’s page the other day. It would be cost effective since the pavement would need to be ripped up anyway. Also, it would be a true throwback to the roots of nascar right in its birthplace 😁
Eh... I'd rather them just being it back as it was!
Good criminal idea my man. Damn, wish I had said that so I could take credit for it.
Ppl need to get off the whole nascar and wilksboro it’s probably never gonna happen
Was literally about to comment this. Makes complete sense
I wish Dale didnt retire earlier if this was gonna happen cause i would've love to see Jr on dirt he'd be like his Father and Grandfather
He doesn’t know anything about dirt
We all know he's not even close to as good as his father or grandfather and knows nothing about dirt racing.

I thought i heard Dale say he liked the ideal of dirt but not at Bristol, I liked the dirt, I think it will be better next year .No Windows!
From a person that was at the races, Bristol Motor Speedway did an amazing job with this event. The storms were really bad in the area and they weren't hesitant at all to call the race to be ran on Monday which was the best idea and the track looked great considering how much rain there was. The sun shined through the dust and made it hard to see on the front stretch where I sat but that is a factor of dirt track racing you're gonna get some dust. Other than that it was a great race and only hope to see it improve next year.
You guys should have a fan on one of the shows. What better way to truly understand how the fans feel. Than hearing it from their own mouth. If not fans. Then grass roots/weekly guys who can give you insight on what is happening in the trenches on a week to week basis. However it could be done. I think it would be cool for the fans to actually have a voice. Dale Jr. would be the guy in my opinion. That could make that happen.
Dale Earnhardt Jr. and Marcus Smith... Setting the future direction of NASCAR. Yes, please.
I would have thought the Bristol bash would have been the decider.... that was huge..the number of cars that showed up was amazing
Get ahold of Johnny Stokes next year. That guy knows the Dirt. He can Work the Dirt. He IS a Artist.
Dr Dirt
is larson the best ever?
Foyt, Andretti, Larson
Tony Stewart and all the hard workers at Eldora, “The Greatest Dirt Track”, has their hands up, saying, we HAVE the best track for dirt racing. Bring the cup series here. There will be no flaws in the track unlike Bristol. Eldora has the best track crew. Period. Ask any dirt racer....
Eldora has a truck race. I say go somewhere else like Virginia Motor Speedway. Half mile dirt track operated by the Sawyer family. Same people who owned and operated RIR.
Marcus Smith's Family owns half the tracks that NASCAR runs on. The rest, save 4 tracks, are owned by the France family. Stewart bought one of the best dirt tracks around. He has a few bucks thanks to Gene Haas, but is way out of their league when it comes to cash/assets and like-ability.
knoxville in iowa is pretty good too, just no banking
@@alvarsdzenis4739 I think your the only one who likes rich racing oligarchs lol. Bring cup to Eldora/Knoxville
Williams grove would be amazing for the trucks
There were so many people that had tickets an had to go home. Because they had to work on Monday. So I'm glade they will have another chance to see the dirt race.
My favorite racing is DIRT
Much props to the Bristol crew. Job well done. We will be down there in 3 weeks from the north east. Much respect
I can’t say I was a fan of it before practice on Friday and finally seeing the races on Monday, but I love it now, can’t wait for next years race
I like the risky decisions, and trials NASCAR is doing. What the heck. Do it.
Even if it is dusty and boring.
@@leopardcubpupkryky6940 I wasn’t bored. Maybe some were.
Who ever buys the NASCAR/ Bristol/ Dirt tv rights should be obligated to publicly nationally broadcast for free, ALL the dirt races, both leading up to and after the cup race. Right from 4 bangers to WOO 410's and everything in between. The networks have the cash, make them spend it.
Tv rights belong to Fox though 2024 for first 16 cup races. Cup series race was on regular Fox, practice and qualifying belong on FS1.
@@johnhaas2523 Thanks. I knew fox had the tv rights, but didn't know for how long.
Way to go Dale
Great stuff y'all! So awesome to have more coversation about dirt tracks and Nascar! Awesome race and idea

red clay or bust.
Ashland Proctor?
Dale Jr is a special host as he does not do ALL the damn talking. He's a good listener.
I was very excited to see the race on dirt, Just wish the upper part of the track would support a line where you could have cars drifting and passing by carrying speed. Later in the race the trace became one lane. Maybe have more track reconditioning after the stages. Hey, we seem to get a lot of rain-outs and I use the NASCAR application to track race times, tell NASCAR they need to have the app remind you when the race starts and adjusts when the races are delayed or moved a day. I missed the first part of the race on Monday, my DVR does not adjust when there is a race delay and remembering when the race starts on a Monday I need a reminder. The app does not support race delays very well if at all.
They also kept moving the channel around, first it was FS1, then FS2, and then back to the regular FOX channel.
I wound up missing the truck race for a similar reason
Tony Stewart is an expert on dirt combinations. No dust is one or holding moister
Went to the Kings Royal and I had dirt in my eyes 2 days later so no.
The NASCAR assholes knew nothing of what they were doing. They had plenty of time to make sure the track was perfect and they failed to execute.
Went to a dirt race in Hanford California my two little girls were building snowman out of the mud that was flying off the track and into the stands
@@zacharyradford5552 only thing they could have done different is have the race at night..
thanks for the decision Marcus, I'll be there next Spring in '22
Dale Jr and Tony Stewart need to buy North Wilksboro and make it a permanent dirt track
Marcus Smith, the guy sitting across from Jr. owns it. He's COO of SMI which his dad owns. He could buy and sell both tony and Jr a dozen times over.
Maybe or maybe not but I have seen articles before where they wanted to sell NW for 10 million dollars so Tony and Jr could easily do that but would have to rebuild it which would be millions more or they could partner with Bruton Smith and the guy who owns Camping World and rebuild it as a permanent dirt track and run NASCAR ARCA Tony and Rays new series WOO Dirtcar Big Blocks Lucas Oil SLM and Sprint cars WOO SLM Tonys Sprint car series and alot more
@@jimmyjolly4184 No Maybe about it. SMI has very deep pockets. (Bruton Smith CEO, Marcus Smith COO). They are in the speedway business and don't need help from Lemonis. The turnout at Bristol was because it was Bristol, not because it was dirt. There's a lot of very good, even better dirt venues around, but lack the funding, management and organization that pro tracks have. As Ralph Earnhardt once said, "You can make a living on the dirt, but the real money is on the asphalt".
Look this dirt thing has a chance to bring back the energy that Nascar has been lacking for a better part of 20 years.
Hard work and swinging like Nascar did was a huge part of why this is an will be amazing thing for the future!
You ask me I think that these dirty things should have more of a stock feel to them and less of a championship Cup race car look to them and I'm with Junior on the look of the cars because the more stock that the cars look the more people can relate
Like for the championship for instance, you could run 3 dirt tracks 3 short tracks 3 Speedways and one Superspeedway it balances out perfect plus it brings this new life back to the sport that it has been missing in this could ultimately help heal America in a lot of ways because I remember as a kid we was rushing from church to watch the race it didn't matter what politics were in NASCAR can help heal a massive wound we were dealt in 2001 two of them actually and it's never been the same since and Bristol on dirt brought back that feeling a little bit good job cuz I need a job by the way if anyone hiring
Got to figure out how to prevent that top 2-3" from peeling off like it did at the end of the race and how to keep that dust down.
No windshields!
No Jr. all dirt is not created equal. I would think a racer might should know that
I mean he never raced on dirt so he wouldn't know.
He may have said that on behalf of what maybe a lot of viewers thought
How about a martnisville dirt race?
Vintage dirt!! I love it.
Bring on more dirt!
How are the drivers feeling this next year?
I know Joey Logano is happy about it, lol
Who cares what these whiny nascar driver think
Bring Smoke on here...I would like to hear what he has to say about the "Dirt"....
Nah. He has the track at Eldora so screwed up
I'll skip that show thank you. I can't stand the murdering butt-hole.
There are great dirt tracks that does not create near the dust that you can't see through.
bristol is completely surrounded by walls so the wind can not blow the dust away it has to raise up and get above the walls to blow away
@@clemzahrobsky2137 That's what I was thinking. You think dirt you think small local tracks with nothing to keep the dust from blowing away. At most it's a fairgrounds with stands on the front straight.
Unlike bristol.
I have moved dirt on jobs all over North America and have developed probably 20 non scientific names for variations of dirt.
What we call snow, the Inuit in the north have over 40 names for, depending on what they can do with a particular consistency of snow.
Isn't it called aggregates or something like that
You don't race cars on dirt in the DAYTIME!

The type of dirt you use on a racetrack is dependent on the regions climate conditions...or at least that is always what I assumed. If I am wrong please educate me, seriously I would love to know.
I would think that’s more of a factor when it’s a permanent dirt track
@@pgc2817 Even if it is temporary for a single race wouldn't climate still dictate the type of dirt ? Say if the place is humid w a ton of moisture in the air or dry as a bone, wouldn't that affect the choice of dirt even for a one off race ?

Cup and Trucks on a 1 mile mostly flat dirt track.
leave Bristol alone. Race at a purpose built dirt track. Bristol is already a great track.
It used to be before they cut it down
Eldora is the best dirt track around, that bristol bash was bs to those who know dirt racing, to see asphalt down the middle of the track took the dirt away
Agreed
@@garew3182 Most well known, not the best
People really need to stop with the go to a purpose built dirt track. Especially Eldora. There's not 1 dirt track around that could hold the crowd for a cup race. The cup race had a reduced capacity of 30k, due to Covid. Eldora can only seat 30k at max with no restrictions. Bristol had professional people that run dirt races come in and do track prep.
You can only do so much track prep or water, due to the windshields. You can't water the track to much due to clay getting on the windshield. So you have to run it a little drier so it doesn't stick to the windshield. Running it drier makes it dustier though.
To fix their issues, they need to remove the windshield, put a rock screen in like a dirt late model or modified, make a carbon fiber box to enclose radios and other things that dirt may mess up and have drivers run tear offs. With no windshield you can run a wetter tackier track. Only issue may be the opening of the grill for the radiator, but you could probably build that some into the hood with a scoop and run different duct work.
Asphalt is for getting to the dirt track racing.
Put Dirt on Martinsville next!
How would that work?
The Bristol dirt will be a better race if Nascar goes to live pit stops
No that wud b a disaster! Think about it......
Even Eldora didn't have live pitstops for the Truck races
@@ramillerusa it's how it was done in the old days
That analysis of dirt is from you know nothing about dirt. The fact you went with red dirt for that type of racing instead of black gumbo
Well he wasn't going to have dirt trucked in from out of state
maybe it was just mishandled, likely to get the right surface you need to oil the track, I am sure the EPA would frown on that. I am from Richmond and I remember dirt track racing, daytime and it was not like Mondays race, you don't have much at stake, the sport is almost dead, maybe a good old figure eight race next, or racing suvs or crossovers, yea I can see that saving Nascar. Good Luck with it, I see the sport lasting maybe 5 more years
The Best NC driver that never went to the big time because the sponsor of his late model was the Hell Angels Motorcycle Club....THAT'S A DIRTY SHAME.

Come on Man!?! All they need to do is separate the Nationals and the Cup Race by a Weekend. Run it at Night. Where the Sun isn’t a Factor. Work the Track. Groom the track. Then bring NASCAR in.
@@matthewhicks1725 Come on man what? You're basically admitting what they did wrong too. They ran it in the day after the truck race and only groomed it after stage 2 which did little to improve the track. That race sucked!!!!
It’s crazy how different fans’ perspectives really are. I guess your one of the keyboard warriors who thinks they know better. Or think they know how to run a event.Have you ever promoted or ram an event? I’m guessing you haven’t. I thought it was a Great Race! The Weather for one threw a curve. I think they did outstanding with the conditions that they were given. That track had 1400 Race cars on it the week before. Which turned Thousands of Laps. The Dust Happens. Its just part of it. I’m sure Richard Petty, Ned Jarrett and Junior Johnson ran under some pretty dusty Daylight conditions. But yes, a simple nighttime start would fix it. Marcus Smith definitely needs to be in the fold when it comes to making decisions with NASCAR. The guy is with he times. Plus he is willing to put himself out there for what he believes. Kyle and those guys are in defense mode cause they know that the industry is going to open up to a whole different group of people. The more Dirt shows the better. And what’s this crap about making them drive “Dirt Cars”? In the old days that was part of it. They ran the same car on both🤷♂️ Figure it out!
YOu gotta cut a LOT of wood to make all that saw dust. HEY, MORE SAWBLADES HERE!! Shut up Danica
Now Nascar has a year to make rules for dirt super late models and the teams have a year to build or buy a real bonified dirt car and put on a better show. Real dirt cars have no windows!
Not happening
But they aren't real dirt cars...they are cup cars on a dirt track. Perhaps you missed that part.
Did you suffer a concussion?
I agree. Guys running on a budget equal to Rick Hendrick's 3rd cousin's ashtray change just a week earlier on the same track bested most cup cars by more than 2 seconds in lap times during practice. Bout like me in a speedo; it fits, does its job but just isn't gonna appeal to my target demographic.
Seriously only change that's needed.... pull the windshield....please pull the damn windshield!!!!
Mark my words NASCAR 2020 will be known as NASCARS RESET YEAR
Does anybody else find Mike Davis kinda annoying or just me?
If they are going to bring NASCAR to a real dirt track, other than Eldora because I think they screwed Tony Stewart over the whole dirt track thing, another good one would be Terre Haute. Never been to a bad race there, and every May when I make my trek to Indy for the 500, Terre Haute is my favorite stop all week for the USAC sprint cars. The grandstand isn't huge, but there is nothing next to the track, so it wouldn't be hard to put up temporary grandstands like other series do for street races.
Plus it would be a whole lot easier and cheaper to bring grandstands to the dirt track, than it is to bring the dirt track to the grandstands.
If it not a track owned by speedway Motorsports or nascar you can forget about it
dirt race at Dover would separate men from boys.....
