      It was annoying when I went to Microsoft today to see if they have a trade in program and they stated they only have a recycle program. I spent $2100 on my Pro 4 with the top specs: i7, 16gb ram, 512gb ssd and they quoted me $350. I"m interested in the laptop but I could live with my Pro 4 for a few more years.

    I just can't read these comments about USB-C... I am a student and I'm using the SP4 for taking notes and doing everythink on my Surface... And you know what? I don't know anyone in my school who is using that C type... and also our school system is not ready for this standart and it's not going to change in 3 years. Type A is the right choice for me. the Surface Laptop is also death for me and mz classmates. Datachable keybord is the priority... Thanx for reading this

    I am blown away!! completely! this is the perfect device for me!! and I will definitely buy the core m or i5 version as soon as it is available!! maybe I will wait for few months for a price drop, but I will get it ! it has everything I wanted from my new 2 in 1 pc. I was torn between sp4 core m and Lenovo yoga book but now I will ditch booth of them for this new surface pro because it has:-
    1. power of sp4, even better(better than lyb, sp4 core m and sp4 i5)
    2. portability of LYB (thinner and lighter than sp4)
    3. no fan of both sp4 and lyb(its important as I HATE fan noise, its very distracting especially in a quiet room)
    4. LTE connectivity of lyb(most important as I want to be able to use my sp4 anywhere, not just my home which has wifi. now I can take my sp4 on cool windy nights outdoorand on rooftops and enjoy movies)
    5. battery life of lyb( again most important as my current laptop gives me 10hr plus battery life and it costs 140 usd, so if aam bying a more expensie device, it has to be an upgrade in all forms)
    6. better pen of LYB(with better latency and angle sensitivity)
    7. charging via the usb a to c connector, will be great if I am to buy a new smartphone.as of now I don't have any type c device.

    Why is everyone so butthurt over no USB-C? It's a crappy "standard" with all sorts of variants, and even has the potential to fry your device. So I get it why MS doesn't want to go down USB-C natively. The USB-C standard needs to be fixed and that's not something MS can do. It's just a freaking port. Look at the device as a whole and then decide if it suits your needs or not.

    • @kornkernel2232
      @kornkernel2232 Před 7 lety +3

      Yeah indeed, they become the extreme end. Microsoft for whatever reason seem to refuse to include Type-C port while Apple just ditched everything to only Type-C port without an extra Type-A port for transition.
      Also, they should not go for only USB Type-C, but they must go straight to Thunderbolt Type-C. Especially that they solely use Intel anyways. Thunderbolt accessories are something to look forward to especially like external GPU and other accessories that requires high-bandwidth that Thunderbolt can only offer. This is the beauty of Type-C port standard, its both used for USB and Thunderbolt.

    • @Hobbles_
      @Hobbles_ Před 7 lety +1

      There is no reason that there could not also be a Thunderbolt 3 port in addition to the other ports, or that the Mini Displayport connector could not have been switched to Thunderbolt 3.
      Having a Thunderbolt 3 ports means that you have USB-C, which means that you won't have to worry about future accessories not connecting to the device, as the switch IS happening. You would also be able to use a single cable for charging your Surface Pro and your future phones. In addition, Thunderbolt 3 would allow for the connection of an external GPU, allowing the device to stay relevant in the creative and gaming space much longer, as the integrated graphics simply are not powerful enough for many creative applications, or most games.
      So yes, while I am annoyed that it does not include the Surface Pen or Surface Keyboard, as I wanted this to be my next device and spending more money on accessories that are basically required for general use, I am more annoyed that they are still not including ports required to make this device a long-standing, smart investment for many people.

    • @ImMendota
      @ImMendota Před 7 lety

      By the time USB-C becomes standard, if it does (remember firewire) you will be ready to upgrade anyway. And you can always use the coming dongle if you need it now. I am happy Microsoft went this way. I don't have any USB-C items, and I don't want to have to go out and buy dongles or new USB drives, etc. Just because Apple went out on that limb, doesn't mean Microsoft has to bail them out.

      tusit21 I mean... 4k is just the screen. any 4k dell laptop for $600 is going to be fatally flawed with either awful battery life (because of the 4k screen draining power), an underpowered processor, bad build quality or a slow hard drive. or it's not the newest model. the XPS 13 (which is probably the closest thing to a Surface Pro in terms of equipment) is $2000 with a 4k screen... and starts at $999

    unpopular opinion... USB-C missing wasn't the end of the world.
    Need to connect to an external display? a display port dongle costs just as much as a type C one. Nobody has a USB-C flash drive that I know, and I have enough 16gb drives lying around my house that I'm quite comfortable sticking with them for a while. I don't need a $500 graphics enclosure, I use cloud storage, type A 3.1 still provides fast data transfers.
    And I don't WANT my laptop to charge through Type C until it can be made magnetic! I study in a library where people trip over power cords all the time. Magnetic chargers like MagSafe and Surface Connect have a very useful advantage- when someone trips over them, they break off rather than drag your computer off the table for an expensive crash landing. I know Belkin has an adapter of some kind- but again it's another $50 I would rather not pay.
    in summation, I'm content to stick with boring old Type A until they get -C right. And so far, despite some exciting new capabilities, it ain't!
    tl;dr- could they have put one? yes. am I broke up about it? no, not really, because I don't have a shit ton of -C gear lying around and I'm not itching to buy!

    • @kornkernel2232
      @kornkernel2232 Před 7 lety +3

      Likely the non-pro Surface may go to be ARM-based when Windows 10 on ARM is ready. No, I don't think the Surface Phone/Pocket that may take a while to be introduced since there is a lot of things they need to sort out on smartphone aspects.
      Though I wish that we will have instead a small Surface tablet (8-inch) that is best suited for note-taking, focused on pen-based productivity and consumption. Windows as a whole need a renewed representative of small tablets. There aren't alot of choices of small Windows tablets these days. I believe there is still a good market for these, beyond the typical consumption tablet. It's even odd really when they recently introduced eBooks on Creators Update, when there aren't alot of small Windows tablets to really take advantage of it. 10-inch and above are just little too big for ebook reading.

    The "up to 13.5 hours of battery life" is misleading to the consumer. I have the i5 8/256 and in a full 3 day test, the best I have gotten running just Office has been 6.22 hours. For a device that is claiming up to 13.5 should be closer to 10 or 11 hours. The i7 version of the Surface Pro has the same issues. Microsoft support's recommendation is sending it back for a shiny refurbished replacement. Don't think so. I am returning the device today and unfortunately getting a MacBook Pro.
    My recommendation would be to look at the 13" HP Spectre x360. Not only are the specs better (i7 Processor 16gb/512gb hd), but the battery life is around 12.5 hours. Oh! And that includes the stylus and keyboard (it is built in) and 2 USB C ports that include fast charging. The cost difference is $1700 vs $1169. I would love to chat with Microsoft regarding these issues, but they seem to want to hide behind their lousy support.

    • @Helbore
      @Helbore Před 7 lety +2

      If your battery has gone so bad in only eight months, then send it back to Microsoft. Its still in warranty and unless you've got some hidden evilware lurking on there, its probably a fault. My Pro 4 can last me all working day, plus time to play with it on the commute, too. It should easily do 8 hours unless you are hammering it hard.
      No point in hanging on to a faulty device when MS owe you a working one.

  • @Leowulfs
    @Leowulfs Před 7 lety +1

    Pro tip: Never listen to Microsoft's battery claims. I've had a Surface 3, Pro 3, Pro 4 and a dGPU model of the Surface Book and battery life is always mediocre, especially when compared to a MacBook.
    Not to mention they'll randomly drain battery when "sleeping" and I actually took my Surface Book out of my laptop last semester and it was warm and 20% of the battery had drained. If they could finally iron out the software, maybe they can hit that battery level.
    Also it's so disappointing they innovate so much for the Studio but the Surface Book and now the 'Pro 5' are so out dated without USB-C :(

    I completely understand why they don't do USB-C. It's not a bad choice. Other than power delivery, you're not missing anything. And for power delivery, it's not reliable. Just go to amazon and look at USB-C chargers, chargers from respected companies and read the horror stories.
    It'll get there. MS doesn't have jump in yet. Nothing you own "needs" USB-C yet.

    • @eonotekaumaiwa4625
      @eonotekaumaiwa4625 Před 7 lety +2

      it's not just for power delivery; thunderbolt 3 is unmatched for connecting your device to a monitor... sucks that some cables fry your devices tho

    • @BurakBagdatli
      @BurakBagdatli Před 7 lety

      I know it's not only for PD, but there's a mini display port there. USB-C uses Display Port standard. It's just doing that over a universal port. That port will drive a second 4K display (it would be nice if MS could confirm this). You really shouldn't be looking for more in a device like this. Maybe the dock can do more. I don't know. As you said, thunderbolt is better but it's overkill for a device like this to drive multiple 4K screens as well as its own screen. Maybe the next Surface Book can do that. That's not a bad idea.
      It really sucks that we have a port that "can" do everything but does not "have to". Over the next years, there's going to be a lot of people plugging their cables into USB-C ports expecting power delivery, or fast connectivity, or A/V transfer and getting frustrated that it's not happening because that specific port doesn't do X or Y. I wish the USB-C standards people got together and said "look, all of this needs to work or you're not calling it USB-C". Now the thing is that it's very difficult to engineer a board that can do everything on every port. This is why the Mac Books have very few ports. It's a trade-off. I actually think they've done a great job in making all USB-C ports do all the things. Some PC manufacturers include USB-C ports and some of them can do thunderbolt, some of them can do charging and it's all confusing because thunderbolt logo looks like a charging thing. It's just not well thought-out.
      It used to be that if a cable would mate with a port, it would work. USB-C is literally breaking that. It's a weird transition. I expect that in a few years things will settle down. But in the mean time and even after that, you won't lose much if you don't have a USB-C. None of my computers have USB-C, honestly, I couldn't care less. I never needed something and realized "oh I need USB-C for that womp womp".

    • @BurakBagdatli
      @BurakBagdatli Před 7 lety +2

      Yordan, yes. External GPU is the only thing you'll miss. But having a USB-C port does not guarantee external GPU support. This is a tiny screen for high end gaming anyway. Also, I didn't say you can get Thunderbolt 3 from another port. I'm just saying Thunderbolt 3 is an unnecessary thing for this device.
      I'm just saying that if you need a discrete GPU you should look into the Surface Book line or just something else from Razer or Dell or something. The good thing about Windows is that you have a lot of hardware options. This is mainly a work computer. It's a Pro. It's a corporate pleaser.

    • @Hobbles_
      @Hobbles_ Před 7 lety +1

      Gaming is not the only use for a discrete GPU, video editing, rendering, and other forms of content production are very slow without having the power of a discrete level GPU. If you have not noticed, the Surface devices are usually aimed at creatives. Plus, it would add to the longevity of the device. CPUs have not been gaining much power over the last number of generations, and thus will stay relevant for many years, but the integrated Intel graphics, and even the GPU in the Surface Book will be rendered obsolete after not too long. Having a Thunderbolt 3 port would allow you to keep your device relevant for much longer, and possibly allow creators to have just a single device, rather than two.
      And yes, while there are other options, that does not mean pressure should not be put on Microsoft to add it, or that the other devices necessarily fit the bill. For me personally, I would not pay money for any device of this type if it was not a Surface device. The level of quality of the others simply do not compare, from the accessories like the Surface pen and keyboard/trackpad, to the screen, to the general feel.

    • @pyfooty
      @pyfooty Před 7 lety +1

      I have to disagree. I have a new MacBook that charges over USB type c, so when the Nintendo Switch came out with USB type C I was stoked I can charge both with the same charger. Now, I have to carry around one charger for them, and one charger for the Surface. Going universal is always in the best interest of the consumer, and Microsoft is showing they lack any fucks to give.

    Everyone has complained for years that the keyboard should be included, and instead of listening to users they go and make the PEN not included too. Sigh. Oooh the price is lower! Not when you have to buy a $200 keyboard and $100 pen.

    • @WindowsCentral
      @WindowsCentral  Před 7 lety

      Even if they "included it" they would have jacked up the price anyway, so what's the difference? You're paying for a KB and Pen one way or the other, either separately or included. Just because something is included does not make it free.

    • @netcruzer
      @netcruzer Před 7 lety

      I never said it was free. It's more about making the pen and keyboard both an option instead of included. It's not like there are 3rd party options. You should buy both for a surface pro, so I'd rather have the price higher and both bundled in. Now they will have lower attach rates for pen when before it was 100%.
